I had the same experience that everyone else had with Van Patten Furnishings. Upfront I was told he could do what I asked for no problem, a simple farmhouse table 4x4 feet with 4 chairs. The deadline was pushed back due to Covid, which was completely understandable. Just like everyone else, delivery after delivery date was missed. We postponed plans to sit at home and wait for hours just to be told it couldn't happen today. (Like everyone else, the rain was an excuse, late night at work, a flood at home, etc.). I was initially told we could choose to pick it up but when I asked if we could pick it up I was told that he preferred to deliver it. I was always promised it would be delivered for sure the next day, and was even given a $100 refund for the inconvenience just to be let down again with another missed delivery. I finally told him that I would be picking it up the next day or I would like a refund. My fiancé and I were extremely disappointed when we got it home and got a better look at it. The measurements were not what I asked for (it was a rectangle instead of a square like I was promised), the boards were incredibly uneven with glue coming out between the slats (he said this was the look he liked, but it was obviously just sloppy), the chairs were uneven and the seats were as rough as sandpaper. The chairs were still wet!! He told us this was a "protection coat for the rain". We had white all over our hands, so it was clearly not a protective coat. It was very obvious that the chairs were spray painted hours before picking it up even though everything was supposedly ready for weeks before this. I told him it wasn't what I asked for and would be bringing it back to be fixed. For some reason I felt bad not giving him a fifth chance. I was told by Austin that it would take about 1 week to make all the fixes. After about a month and a half of not getting any updates, I asked for a refund and was told that I would get an invoice to sign and then receive my refund. Another few weeks went by and I received no such invoice. Eventually I gave up because clearly the communication was lacking. I sent a venmo request for the money back and luckily I received it. Seems as though other people weren't so lucky. Still, so much time and gas wasted to end up with nothing. Do not waste your time. The first photo is what I asked for and the rest are what I received. The screenshot from Instagram was the style table that I asked for and I wanted white chairs with a brown seat. The base of the table was actually very nice, but everything else was unfinished, the wood slats were uneven and the chairs were so sloppy and you can clearly see in the picture how rough and thrown together they were.

I've been waiting to write a review for a couple reasons. Austin is nice and I think that he may actually think he's doing a good job. However, the experience I had was unreal. I reached out to Austin on April 18 2020 after looking at his work both on Facebook and his website. I have been looking for someone to take my grandmothers table that she left me when she passed and turn it into a table that was more my style while using the same wood. I explained it all to Austin and he seemed very excited about it. I also let him know that my grandmother did not come from money and I wasn't sure about the wood quality. He assured me that this is what he does and he was confident that he could make it into something beautiful. He wanted to see examples of what I liked so I pulled pictures from his Facebook and his website. I wanted a counter height table that would seat 8 On April 30th I drove three hours to meet up with him and handover my table. I paid $1200 and was told it might take 6 weeks. I didn't hear back from him. So I reached out on June 14th. No response. June 17th he asked me which invoice I was told me my table was in multiple pieces and that he was working on it. Said he was waiting on some hardwood and expected to have it done in 14 days it's all gravy from here. He also explained to me that he was put back on active duty with the Air Force so his time schedule has been pushed back a little bit....What kind of person would I be if I didn't respect that? After the 14 days have passed I started texting regularly and trying to set up a time to meet with him so I could get the table back. He would either ignore me or some thing would come up on planned days. Finally on July 17th we met. What this man delivered me, believing that this was even close to what I wanted or even close to satisfactory work was appalling. There were two small pieces in this monstrosity that were from my grandmothers table. He didn't have the chairs done, nor did he even return them to me. My husband is an amazing contractor so I know what satisfactory work looks like. What this man is telling people is a shit ton of lies. The table that I got back with some thing that a 12-year-old could've slept together in one day. The wood was still so wet that the table itself actually molded. If you set a glass on this table top it would tip over nothing was level or even, paint was literally dripping down the base. It was a complete and total joke and I told him so. Austin DID refund me my $1200. My stepdad took two pieces from the base, which were the only pieces from my grandmothers table, and made me a small side table which I will show in the picture section. That is the only thing I have left of my grandmothers table. Austin will not get back to me on any of my messages. I've been trying to coordinate with him since the day I picked up my table, so that I could get my chairs and my table top back. None of which were used on what he gave me so I'm not sure where they are. My warning to everyone is look very closely at the pictures of his recent work before you purchase anything. After doing lots of research I think that the beautiful pictures on his website are from his grandfather's work not his own. During all the chaos I reached out to a woman who also wrote a review on here, she had a similar story to me. Apparently he uses getting put back on active duty as an excuse and that really pisses me off.

This guy needs to learn some customer service skills and a lesson in honesty. The tables are ok, for the price it's ok. He is a beginner, and his work his flaws. I could have looked past some of that tho if he was honest and replaced the broken chairs he delivered as he said he would and if it didn't take me over two months of asking when my table would be here after the delivery date. Then having every excuse from a flat tire to being busy. In reality it looked like he threw the table and chairs together last minute when he had 14 weeks. I'm still waiting for the bench and replacement chairs and I've only texted once a month asking for an update, now I've had nothing but silence. For someone In the military I expected more.

Unfinished rough wood and cracked from hardware installation

Terrible quality product, as you can see from the photos... I mean honestly... the only thing a table needs to be is level, which this is no And the photos don't decive you, bench really is about 4 inches from the bottom of the table, a child would not even be able to fit.. The business owner, Austin's communication was poor through the entire buying process, but communication dropped off completely when a refund was requested. Would not recommend to anyone, quality is what you would expect From a struggling student in a beginners woodshop class, and the communication is non existent as soon as the payment is sent. I encourage any previous customers who had a similar experience file a small claims suit with Solano County.

DO NOT BUY FROM THEM!! Not only did Austin not deliver the table on time, the craftsmanship is crap. Not worth the money at all. The chairs started falling apart 2 weeks after I got them. I contacted Austin to let him know. He said that's the rustic look. Huh?! The high-school wood shop students could have done a better job. Very disappointed. Spare yourself the headache of working with Austin the train wreck and do not do business with him.

During the summer of 2020, my wife saw the beautiful pictures of a corner booth that this business was advertising. My wife fell in love with it for our dining room. With Austin being an active member of the military and me being a veteran, we wanted to give VanPatten Furnishings our business. My wife ordered two booths and two benches in August and was told by Austin that he would be able to do it within a 10-week time frame. Ten weeks came and went. With the pandemic and Austin being in the military, we were understanding of the delay. Initially. Fast forward to mid-November 2020. We were given a firm date for pick up just before Thanksgiving. My wife was ecstatic because she was going to have Thanksgiving dinner on her new tables and benches. We sold two hutches to make room for it. She sold her decorations that had been on the hutches. I took a day off of work. We rented a trailer and drove to Rio Vista for pickup and once we were arrived in town after a 90-minute drive, we received a call that the order was not ready and they had no time table for its completion. In essence, we were lied to that the order was ready and wasted considerable time and money that day. We spoke to May, who was stuck in the middle between Austin and us, the customers. She could not give a good reason why this happened but said going forward, they would not be giving customers firm dates. As a gesture of good will, they refunded us half of what we paid and said it would be a discount for when the tables were complete. My wife hoped that maybe they would be ready by Christmas. On December 7th, May texted me and said they were working on the delivery schedule and she would let me know when ours would be ready as soon as she knew. She said they were working on getting everything out by Christmas but no guarantees. Christmas came and went. No tables. Once Christmas was over, I messaged them on Instagram on December 29th and was told that they were having a team meeting that night and I would find out within 24 hours about the finish date. That didn't happen. A week later on January 7th, I messaged them again. Austin messaged me back saying he was on his way to the shop and would call me when he got there. He never did. On January 8th he sent me a text stating the order would be ready for pickup on January 31st or they would deliver on February 6th. He also gave the option of a cancellation with a refund of the remainder of our money. He said that for some reason his calls were not going through to my wife's phone. I gave him the option of calling me directly, which he did not do. Attached to the texts was also a letter sent out by VanPatten Furnishings apologizing to their customers and promising to fix things and do better in the future. At this point we still had hope that we would get the order. This is a new business and as small business owners we understood there are growing pains. So we opted to wait for it to be finished. Having never received the phone call, I asked for a call again on January 11th. It never happened. On January 23rd, I had a missed call from May. She texted me and said it was accidental and they were still working out the details. Finally, on January 25th - the date of this review, five months later, we were told that our order was being cancelled. We received a refund of our money but only after being dragged along for five months with this business. The reason we were given was that the booths take too long to make and it would push back the time frame for other orders. I did talk with May, who is stuck between Austin and the customers as the go between. She apologized and said she understood our frustration. She said that going forward, they would be sticking to their "bread and butter," which she said were tables and benches. She had no good reason as to why Austin would advertise the booths, give a quote, a time frame of ten weeks, two more promised dates of November and January 31st and then completely bail on the project six days before the due date. I expressed my frustration that Austin uses her as the go between to shield himself from customers who want to hear directly from the one making their purchase. Her side was that she is the go between so Austin has more time to work. My belief is that Austin is afraid to talk to his customers and probably male customers especially. I base that on his seeming willingness to call my wife but not me. In the end, he is not a man of his word. He promised to do something and didn't do it. He promised phone calls that never happened. He promised finish dates that came and went. This unfortunately has been one of the worst experiences with a business that I can think of in terms of honesty and transparency. As a small business owner, I wish VanPatten Furnishings success in the future. But I warn people that you should not order from this company until they have developed a track record of delivering on what they promise, when they promise.

Hello Future Buyer! RUN!!! If I could give this business zero stars I would. He is the worst communicator I've ever done business with, makes terrible products, and refuses to take responsibility for his actions. I order a farmhouse table and storage bench. The bench is nearly, 3-4 inches off, the same height as the table and the table is a piece of garage. The table itself isn't level, leaves are not secured properly, table has screws sticking out, and much more. I asked for my money back and was completely ignored. I took Austin to small claims court. He was served papers and did not show up for the court date. The judge ruled against him. He is now claiming SCRA because he was/is a veteran/active duty when I purchased the table. Bullshit excuse! In short; do not purchase from this company of one. You will be nothing but disappointed.

    Shitty table

Saw that my FB review was screen shotted and added to yelp because Austin deleted the FB reviews. Just wanted to chime in and say that i'm a real person, since he is telling his customers that his bad reviews aren't real people. Welp I'm REAL and his work REALLY sucks! Don't send money to this guy, you'll get a POS piece of furniture.

The White Elephant sale has honestly felt very different since 2020. Before the pandemic, there were walk up donations, the warehouse was always full, and the March sale was still packed with treasures to be found. Now the warehouse feels empty even during preview, all walk up and drive up donations have been eliminated, and the March sale is advertised as a "clearance sale" because of how empty the warehouse is. Stopping walk up and drive up donations has seriously hurt the sale. The number of small trinket items to be found is much smaller than it used to be. While there may be costs saved by not having to sort through and discard items that are not sellable, is the loss of profit from not having those smaller items greater? People like me used to donate all the time to the sale, but now donate to thrift stores that have walk up and drive up options instead. How many other people also have a bag full of great items but are not donating them because pickup donations are the only option? I have also found that in recent years the staff has become less and less kind. This year there was not a single visit to the warehouse that was not met with rude or unprofessional behavior by volunteers. That is not to say there are not wonderful volunteers, because I have had great experiences as well, but the number of negative interactions I have had seems to be increasing. I have been accused of stealing, had snarky comments made toward me, and have been accused of price switching. It has gotten to the point where going to the White Elephant is no longer bringing me joy, and it is difficult to see volunteers act with such low levels of kindness. You often emphasize being kind to volunteers, but shoppers deserve that same level of kindness and respect. One thing that stands out when it comes to how empty the warehouse has been, as well as the general morale of the volunteers, is the changing culture of reselling. I recognized dealers from Alameda Point and various antique markets as new volunteers, which makes me wonder if they are partially contributing to the diminished quality and quantity of items this year. In the past, almost all volunteers seemed to be there because they believed in the mission of the Oakland Museum. Now it appears that some newer volunteers may be more motivated by making money. It also raises the question that if they are pricing items they later purchase, were those items priced fairly? Especially when their ultimate goal is to resell items and make money. In addition, there seems to be a lack of willingness to receive feedback. As another reviewer mentioned, it can feel like the organization operates under the idea that because it is for charity and run by volunteers, feedback should not be given. That approach is simply unsustainable. I attempted to provide feedback both in person and on Instagram and was met with very combative responses. This is confusing, as feedback is essential when running such a large sale, and experiences like that make me hesitant to return. I have heard from others that the White Elephant has been "cleared out" this year. Without the return of more casual donations, stronger screening of volunteers, and limitations on what volunteers are able to purchase during presale events, the White Elephant will likely continue to decline. As a loyal shopper, I truly hope the organization will begin taking feedback seriously and consider changes that can help bring the sale back to its former glory.

I've gone to the white elephant for years, 10+ to be specific. This year the selection was…read moredrastically different than previous years (I'll get back to this). Not only that, the prices were the highest I had seen. I included photos of some examples of what was priced super high in bric a brac (on your Facebook page the admin said to 'show specific examples') so I took photos of items I couldn't fathom being that high (even after looking on eBay to compare- the prices were just outrageous considering condition and quality). Not only that, but the selection on preview day (im usually in the first 30 people- and first to the department I shop) it already looked picked through. From what I understand the volunteers shop the sale before- but it's very disheartening and worrying when I recognize people who are new volunteers and I regularly see them sell at local things as resellers (nobody is saying you can't do that!), but it's more so the piecing together the lack of vintage and quality goods this year on preview, and the new volunteers, it's easy to assume there is a correlation. I worry that the integrity of the sale may be lost- and will only worsen as the years carry on. I know departments can vary year to year- of course that's a factor I consider. This is not a normal amount of variation- it's not like there was 30% less of something I have ALWAYS seen at your preview sale- it was 100% gone. And when I'm the first person looking- I know someone at preview didn't get it ahead of me. I heard from others who attended- even some people who didn't! They both said the same thing- white elephant was cleared out this year. Culture shifting about second hand and thrifting should be a consideration and something to keep in mind- the structure of this sale will collapse if it isn't. I'd imagine in the next couple years, the amount of resellers volunteering will outnumber the volunteers who have been there for years due to them retiring/ no longer doing it - and in turn will diminish the sale itself. I think how the preview tickets sold out in a little over a day vs a week last year, should convey how there is an increase in demand, to the degree that people will try to covertly get around it and 'ahead' by volunteering. Correct me if I'm wrong, but many new volunteers this year didn't follow through with their commitments after they shopped on their preview- it makes you wonder.
