Their quote was fair and competitive -- ultimately I decided to move forward with someone who came directly recommended by a friend, but Van's pricing was absolutely in line with the market and within about $100 of my lowest quote out of five different providers I interviewed. The scope included a full spring cleanup of a heavily overgrown yard, including mowing, pruning, weeding, pressure washing, bark installation, and repairing a distressed gravel pathway. Their pricing was very much on par with the other companies I met - for that large service, as well as ongoing bi-weekly yard care. He purchased 8 very small plants (less than 1' tall), and planted them in the wrong area such that even if they were mature they would not provide any privacy.. very disappointed. I feel like I just blew $1600. I should have just done the work myself. Edit responding to below: No I was not happy, I did immediately point out that the planting was in the wrong area and too small but what was I supposed to do? Based on your reply I guess I should have simply not paid. Bill and his team helped me with several projects in my yard. 1. Clean the roof. They used brush, not pressure washing, which protected any damage on the shingles. It definitely took more labor to get rid of all the moss, but it turns out beautifully. Their price is half of the other company. I couldn't believe I had such a great deal! 2. Install sod. They removed the existing grass, till the land deeply, put down new topsoil, and then laid the sod. We have a lot of curves and Bill tailored the sod to my satisfaction. 3. Tree trimming. What a disaster! They visited the site, took pictures, and gave me a quote. The day of work came and the folks who showed up were way under-prepared. It was a big brush cleanup and they brought a small truck. Bill, the person who did the quote, called and said Van's had subcontracted the work and they were refusing to do it. No offer to fix it, no rescheduling. We had a contract for the work and they refused to honor it. Avoid! Edit after Bill's comment: Bill is lying. The yard was EXACTLY the same before and after we agreed on a contract price (not an estimate; he was very clear). They came, took pictures, walked around, and nothing was different on the day of the work. The entire yard was cleared/pruned so there wasn't any more brush we could have possibly added. We have had Van and his crew do so much to our property, and we couldn't be happier with the service his team has provided over the past two years. I cannot compare Van's finished work to that of other landscapers, but I can tell from my experience of getting quotes and estimates for my property and other properties, that Van delivers what I believe to be the best value for someone like me. While other companies provided estimates that seemingly tried to extract every dollar out of our wallets, Van came in with sensible solutions that wouldn't break the bank. While some companies pushed us towards high-end materials like marble or slate, which are notoriously difficult to maintain, Van was able to recommend materials that were easier to maintain and a lower cost to acquire, saving my family effort and money. He is also very flexible with scheduling and performing the actual work. My wife wanted to make some last minute additions to the work while he and his crew were getting started, and they were able to accommodate these changes no problem. During their efforts, he and his team were also able to make some smart and nuanced recommendations of things we could tweak to make our backyard look amazing. He was never pushy when we thought a recommendation wasn't right for us, and we were always grateful to hear his expert opinions on the matter. He and his team were able to listen to my and my wife's concerns about making specific portions of our property look and perform in specific ways. It never felt like we weren't heard, and the end result matched our expectations. We are especially pleased that a portion of our yard is now draining properly, even after the recent downpour, and we are excited to not have to worry about a swampy backyard for the first time in our 7 years at this home. We had two projects for Van and his crew to do for us. The first was to install a sprinkler system in our front yard. The second was to rehab the lawn. Van did a good job for us on both. The sprinkler system installation was an arduous job that required a lot of digging in mud and laying pipe under existing sidewalk. That went well. Some months after the sprinkler installation, we had Van come back to thatch, seed and fertilize the lawn. After that was completed, we asked him to come back and tweak the sprinkler heads to make sure the system was working properly. Van was consistently responsive and competent. read more

I called them at the end of 2019 as I just brought a new house and it was badly in need of any and all landscaping services. I called Van Landscaping which was very fast, and efficient in reaching back (unlike many other companies that ghosted me) and came out right away to do the work. Much work to be done! Weeding, and removing plants and bushes. Trimming trees and hedges. We had an retaining wall with overgrown plants both on top and bottom spilling out on to the street which we ended up installing a two tier retaining wall on bottom to keep everything from spilling out. The last thing to do was to add the beauty bark. Initially, I was very happy with their work. The property definitely looked better and manageable instead of an overgrown forest. The best work was the retaining wall. That's the probably the only thing I'm still happy with. I didn't end up sticking around for the process with all the dirt and debris flying around, but many of the small requests I asked were not taken into consideration. When I reviewed it later that night, the manager told me I should have asked earlier as he didn't have a team the next day to handle the "extra" work. (Which, a lot of these "extra" details was covered with him upon consultation) With so much going on the first day, I thought it would be reasonable to review it all over after the initial clean up. But apparently he only planned for two days of work. For the $3,000 I ended up paying, he certainly could have provided better service. Not to mention six months later, I learned many other details that ensures I won't be calling them again. The hedges were chopped off to the height I requested but so badly they'd never be able to grow back. The rose bushes are practically ruined for years to come. General weeding was done in open areas but not by the trees, bushes or retaining wall. I asked for the retaining wall to be cleared of weeds and excess dirt of mud between rocks but that request was ignored. The beauty bark I requested was of horrible quality and they literally dumped it on top of my old pavers and plastic bags they came in. Honestly, to hide the poor quality of clean up, they dumped the bark on EVERYTHING. This was a nice touch to hide the work they didn't do or clean. I think they were probably hoping I didn't notice, but it was difficult not to when pulling out trash bags and other debris from underneath the bark. I wished at least they had bothered to make the bark look nice by straightening it out but I came back to piles and piles that seemed to be randomly sprinkled and tossed everywhere. I'd recommend them for general service for lawn cleaning, weeding and tree trimming but if you want a company that pays attention to details, definitely not them.i read more
