Had the weirdest experience with this company. They came out to look over my property so they could produce an estimate and that experience was amazing. They suggested ideas went thoroughly through options. I got genuinely excited to work with them and they seemed eager to have my business. I was excitedly told I could expect to have options and estimates mailed in a few days. The thoroughness of this visit is why they get 2 stars (instead of worse). After that it gets weird. They just vanished. I've called several times, emailed the addresses I had corresponded with before their visit, called again......nothing. It's disappointing but also annoying to adjust my work schedule, have such a thorough planning conversation, and then nothing. read more

We hired Seattle Sustainable Landscapes to transform a shaded side garden that had never quite come together. Before the work, the area was functional but awkward: we had managed the slope by placing rocks where they were needed, but it did not feel like an intentional part of the garden. What they created is entirely different: a quiet, integrated garden space with dry-stacked rock walls, a stepping-stone pathway, and a natural flow down the slope into the rest of the garden. What impressed us most was not just the craftsmanship, although the stonework is beautiful. It was the way the crew listened, adapted, and improved the design as the work unfolded. Find someone else. So updating the review. This business quickly went downhill during the pandemic but since then it's been epically bad. I had hope when the ownership changed that we will get better service again. It has gotten worse, from the work (not) being done, to the awful customer service. When they came to my home last fall we had a conversation about the things I'd like to see done for this year. New clover- they charged us for it but never actually planted any . A vegetable garden we asked for multiple- never done. Junk trees removed for view? Done but only after I had to ask for it to be done 4 times beyond the initial ask and reminder. This is the worst our yard has EVER looked. There has been no maintenance beyond lawn mowing-we have video. Plants haven't been trimmed, there are weeds everywhere, blackberry invading. They told us and charged us for coming out to get the sprinkler system set up...turns out they didn't do that either. We have lost a lot of plants because of it. AND because they didn't check things like they said they would? A line ruptured and now we are facing down a massive water bill and water damage. read more

I found this company on Yelp last year and decided to work with them because of their good reviews. I hired them to dig up old sod in my back and front yards and reseed for new grass. What grew was not grass but clover, lots and lots of clover. I sent photos and emailed and tried for two months to get them to remedy the situation. All they did was have their crew throw some new grass seed down and I got more clover. For two months I got the runaround and then I gave up. I had signed a one year contract for monthly maintenance, they do a decent job but will not be renewing my contract. Because just this past month...we asked them for a bid to dig up the clover in the backyard, put a weed barrier down then add top soil. This is for 3 patches of ground approximately 12 x 12 each. He quoted me $3700 just for that. Then I asked him what can they do if I up my budget to $5K? Can we plant some lavender, some other shrubs, maybe a tree? I was shocked when he sent me the quote. They were going to charge us $1400 to plant a single tree. That's right, a single tree. I could go to Lowe's buy one for $100 and plant it myself. This is robbery. So....you don't need to pay the outrageous prices they are quoting. I am still in shock and still so disappointed in my whole experience with this company. I will never work with them again and I wanted to warn folks. read more

We used Jeff's services for well over a year. His people barely knew what they were doing and often made authoritative statements about gardening subjects which were frankly made up. They seemed to leave a tool every time they came. Most of the time they could follow simple instructions but every once in a while they would do something wrong. Jeff met with my wife once to try to improve things and at the time he admitted they were doing a lousy job. The final straw came when my wife gave them very specific instructions on pruning our hydrangea. They then proceeded to prune them below the correct place, resulting in zero blossoms this year. After we told Jeff we no longer wanted his service, he complained that we hadn't let him know about the problems. It's like he expected us to supervise them instead of him. He never came by or asked how things were going. Later he tried to tell us they had done it right, but of course you can see in the picture no buds. I eventually paid him the last $90 we owed him, although honestly I think he ought to have given up in embarrassment. If you want a service where the owner is hands off and who will push back when he should be apologizing, this is it. We could not be happier with our beautiful yard. Wanted to keep it without grass, only plants and bushes that would fill in around the stones. These landscapers also built us a retaining wall, put in lovely paving paths, finished covering the sides of our deck. Also built us a railing for safety in a precarious drop off that we can grow Wisteria on. Already getting raves from neighbors even though the plants are young. Happy with my choice. I had a very small townhouse backyard that was a bit of a mess (low quality builder-grade plantings) and had somewhat of an idea what to do with it. Jeff and his team put in an irrigation system in our front and back yard, cleaned everything up and added many new plants to the sunny and shady areas around our home. I was told they are booked out for small repairs for quite some time. But at least they got back to me. Hence 4 stars: no harm no foul. In fact all of the sprinkler/irrigation entities I've contacted have either not responded or have indicated they are not available. So, I'm now watching youtube videos on irrigation systems. I've cut away a root that was deforming valve #6 causing it to not shutoff. It sort of works now but my confidence in the valve is low. I guess I'll figure out how to replace the valve(s) and maybe even provide some protection for the valves from further root intrusion. If enough of us become self-sufficient with our sprinkler/irrigation systems then perhaps when the stuff really hits the fan someone may have enough free time be able to help. But we have to be careful. If no one needs help then they'll all go out of business. read more

We discovered this team at the Seattle Garden show and they made a good impression there. We invited them to give us a concept and estimate on a very tricky garden area on a fairly steep slope that had fallen into disarray and was particularly in need since a major tree branch shading and obscuring it had snapped and was removed. Dave and Chris provided a rough sketch of what they would do there, and on an unrelated area on the opposite side of our driveway. We were just so impressed with them we accepted the bid and crossed our fingers. Wow, did they deliver ! We now have several gracefully flowing, curved and natural walls creating meaningful terraces, and the whole thing is loaded with new plants, an underground watering system, etc, etc. WE LOVE IT. And, they are so professional, friendly, and easy to work with. I hope we can find another area to ask them to take on. read more

Jeff and his crew did absolutely fantastic work on my yard as I was getting my house ready to put on the market. I can't say enough about how great it was to work with them, but since I'm a long-winded review-writer, I'll give it my best shot... They did two different major jobs at my house. The first was a late fall visit to do some general clean-up, weeding and trimming of the existing stuff as well as to mulch and plant some new shrubs and cover. They were on time and on budget, their work was GREAT, and all of the new plants took. Several of my existing shrubs had gotten a bit out of control, and they trimmed them back heavily such that at first, the shrubs looked a little embarrassed (kinda like when you give a long-haired dog a serious grooming) but after a few weeks of growth they looked fantastic, which I'm sure was the plan. The second job was an early winter job to dig a couple of drainage routes to get water from the downspouts away from the house, turnover and mulching of a raised bed, and general landscaping; this was just before the house was to go on the market, and even in the dead of a very rainy winter, they upped the curb appeal of my house immensely, together with the added security of the improvements in drainage. Once again, the work was on time, outstanding in quality, and UNDER budget! I really appreciated several aspects of their work: First, Jeff obviously thinks a lot about the ecology of a yard (water flow away from houses and toward roots of thirsty trees; soil quality; shade requirements; etc.), the benefits of native and drought-tolerant species, and ways of controlling invasive plants. Second, Jeff and crew have a great eye for the aesthetics of a yard; Jeff made several recommendations to me for how to open my backyard up, and he was absolutely right on all of them...also the "general landscaping" I mentioned above prior to selling my house was far more than just weeding and raking and spreading some bark mulch around; they used some old brick I had laying around to make super attractive beds...it was almost a bummer to not get to live in the house longer to enjoy what they'd done. Finally, Jeff and the entire crew were super nice and professional and fun to be around, even when they were getting dumped on by a Noah's Ark-like rainstorm. Jeff came out and fixed it for a minimum fee, and I've been working with them ever since. I love their model of stopping by every two weeks to clean-up, and my garden looks great. Most recently, the team installed a multi-level patio with large concrete pavers. I had contacted Seattle Sustainable Landscapes to do a clean up, and then regular maintenance on the landscape of my SF home. SSL was one of the few available landscapers that came to bid my job, and didn't require me to either pay a deposit or meet them at my house. In retrospect, this may have been a mistake. We agreed on a one-time clean up of the property, and the monthly maintenance after that. We agreed on meeting on a Friday, and Jeff and his crew would work on the initial clean up. However, Friday came and went, and Jeff never showed up. I finally got an email at the end of the day (5:30PM), simply saying "Sorry we couldn't show up; does Monday work?" This type of communication was a harbinger of things to come. I was very happy with the initial clean up, when they finally got it done. They cut the lawn, pulled weeds all over the property, trimmed bushes and trees back, and remediated blackberry vines. They charged more for this clean up that was originally quoted, but I was ok with that, given that it was a lot of work, and they did it well. Jeff, the owner, checked in after that to determine whether I was satisfied with the job, and to see if there was anything specific I wanted to address on his crew's next visit. I had indicated that there was another small cluster of blackberry vines on the other side of the property that would be great to address before it became an issue. He indicated that he'd do so on the next visit. About a month later, I noticed that the blackberry vines had not been remediated, and the invoice I got was for two instances of service in the same month. Upon contacting Jeff, he didn't recall ever agreeing to a monthly service, and sent screen caps of our conversation on Yelp's messaging service where he talked about his normal service. I sent screen caps back where we agreed to monthly service, literally the next two messages in the conversation. I was disappointed in the integrity of the communication, but chalked it up to a small business owner managing a lot of things in his business. I will also say, I was indignant at having to pay for service to which I didn't agree. However, a month later, Jeff contacted me saying that he could no longer service my house due to the fact that I was too far south, and that he was disinterested in doing a monthly service. I think I should have enlisted a service that would come out, look at the property, understand how far away my house is from their place of business, and give me a more accurate quote. Looking back through my correspondence with Jeff, I am struck by how much the service differed from what we talked about: they never arrived on the agreed upon time, the cost of the initial clean up was more than was quoted, and the maintenance was bi-weekly, not monthly. The communication is not great, and the follow through is pretty inconsistent. If you are considering Seattle Sustainable Landscapes, I would say that if your needs fit their business model, and you reside well inside their service radius, the work they do is pretty good. However, if you can't meet the aforementioned conditions, you might save yourself some headaches, and look elsewhere. read more

Jeff gave me a good price to reconfigure all the irrigation in my yard, did the work on time, and worked with me to come up with creative solutions to do what I wanted .
