We've eaten here and had takeout/delivery (via DD) and they were fabulous both ways. The restaurant itself is clean and kitschy, and the workers here are friendly and polite. The food is excellent. The rice and refried beans are exactly what you'd expect, cooked well and very tasty. All the meats are great, but their picadillo (shredded combo of beef and pork) is best in our opinion. We've tried a couple of different dishes but I believe their Mole Enchiladas are the best. We tried their chalupa and true to the name, it was the size of a small boat. Thin shell, fried crisp, tons of toppings, it was almost a meal by itself. In the restaurant, we tried the fried ice cream. Sharing size, and so good. Best Mexican Restaurant in Statesville While there are other better know Mexican Restaurants in Statesville, the quality of their food pails in comparison to Vaqueros. Tucked into a small strip mall on the eastern edge of Statesville, it's a bit hard to find but worth the effort. My favorite is the Steak Fajita Quesidilla. What I like about it is the fact that the steak flavor jumps out at you. It's not bland and it's well complimented with the cheese and other sides. It's probably the best Mexican dish in Statesville. Service is excellent and very helpful in navigating an unfamiliar menu. In every case where I have asked for a recommendation, I have not been disappointed. Not much on atmosphere. It's a storefront. Not much to look at from the outside, I can't tell you how many times I have passed this place thru the years and not even known it was there....maybe cuz the location looks kinda like a postal service store. We finally stumbled in on the recommendation of a friend and here's how it breaks down: Location & Atmosphere: Small, hole in the wall, clean, not much ambience but the family who owns/runs/cooks makes you feel welcome. It's very casual and very accomodating for kids and special requests (ie. Items not on menu but very mexican.) Service: Attentive but not overbearing, food cooked to order so takes a bit longer than most places, very friendly. Food: As the owner said, "You're from L.A., you know we have to make our food kinda gringo" but it is not soooo gringo that I'd say it's inauthentic. I never order so much food but today I decided to order a Mucho Combo so I could kill three birds w/one stone. Chicken Enchilada, Chicken Chimichanga, Carne Asada Street Tacos. Enchilda was good, Chimi needed some bell peppers and onions, carne asada was a bit too well done but perked up w/lime. Hubby ordered the Macho Burrito w/picadillio (shredded pork & beef), it was ginormous and he loved it. My son's beans were dry from too long under the broiler but he liked his enchilada and rice. The owner said next time we are in just ask what they are eating in the kitchen and that's what they'll make us. That will definitely more exotic and authentic. LOVED it! Forgive me y'all for not remember what I ate. I was on a date and it was a few weeks ago. But my food was SO good and the place was so cool. I think it's family owned. From where we sat we could actually see into the kitchen. The restaurant is somehow bigger than it looks from outside. Sombreros on the walls, regular diner-type tables and chairs. The guy who took our orders was really accommodating. He let me customize my (picky) order and he even put on some music when I asked. We were here a couple of hours at least. Vaqueros is my favorite Mexican restaurant. Period. I grew up in Statesville, but have long since moved away. Whenever I return to visit family, I always stop in Vaqueros for some nostalgia and out-of-this-world, authentic Mexican food. I have been going to Vaqueros since I was a small child and my mom would take my brother and me to their original location. I believe the name was Toreros back then. The food is just as excellent now as it was then. This is the only restaurant I have been to with such a wide selection of real, authentic Mexican dishes and it puts Mexican restaurants that only serve Tacos, Burritos, Fajitas and the like to shame. At Vaqueros you can get delicious molcajete soup served in the traditional stone bowl, pollo con crema, ceviche, their unique take on ACP, the list goes on... the quality of the food is a stunning contradiction to the price and atmosphere. If you aren't feeling very adventurous, they have the BEST chimicangas as well. I have tried nearly every item on the menu at this point and there aren't any I wouldn't recommend. We were starving when we popped in for supper. Not busy on a Friday, but we just figured it was because restaurants had just been reopened after the covid 19 shut down. The server was friendly. The chips and salsa came out right away. Good salsa with a little spicy bite. I ordered the chile relleno. My husband ordered the same, but his was wrapped in a burrito! I had never seen that on a menu, but he enjoyed it. The chile was good, the rice and beans were good as well, beans were a little thin for my liking. BUT! The absolute best thing was the fresh guacamole. I make guacamole at home using a recipe my father in law got from a Mexican friend. My guacamole is really good. The guacamole in the restaurant though...eyes rolling in your head, I want to put my face in the bowl, I will arm wrestle you for the last bite good! One of Statesville's best-kept secrets. Fresh, home-made food. No bottled salsa here. We've never had a bad meal there, and many, many great ones. I love the chili rellenos - not deep-fried, and less greasy than most places. If you don't feel good, try the chicken soup. I call it Mexican penicillin. We've never had to wait for a table, which proves it's a well-kept secret. There's been some recent remodeling, so there's more atmosphere than before, but it's still a small, family-owned restaurant. If you don't see what you're looking for on the menu, just ask.
