We found this little Mexican restaurant through Yelp and we are glad we did. Arrived in the evening in a Friday, there were not many sitting customers, but plenty of take out ones. Complimentary chips and salsa was good, but the salsa itself was very mild. Added some hot sauce that was at the table to spice it up a bit. They were temporarily out of tequila, so instead of a margarita, I had a Negro Modelo instead. No worries. My husband ordered a "jumbo" draft (yes, they have multiple sizes) and was shocked by the size. (See picture!) Our food came out quickly. My husband ordered the Crazy Burrito (pork) and it was huge and delicious. Super tender meat, spicy salsa verde, good rice and yummy refried beans. He couldn't finish it all, so 1/2 came home with us. (It was bigger than it looks in the picture.) I had the Chicken Suiza Enchiladas, a dish I haven't had in years. It was scrumptious. The sauce was lovely and the chicken was melt-in-your-mouth tender. Definitely one of the best I've had. Everything was very affordable. The restaurant itself was cute and very clean. This used to be a favorite and go-to for years since it is so nearby. Unfortunately, over the last few months the quality and service have declined greatly. After a drop in their health rating and a noticeable change in quality, I took a break from going there. Once I was told the grade had improved, I tried again and was still greatly displeased with the quality of food. The interior of the restaurant is outdated, needs repairs, and is seldom clean-feeling. Tables are sticky and flies are definitely going to be around. The food is average. Half of the servers are great, the other half not so much. A disappointing turn of events for an old favorite. read more

Great Food, Good Service and Excellent Value I've been intending to give this place a try for sometime now and now I regret that I didn't. Tried it out today for lunch and I was blown away. It's a bit of a hole-in-the-wall but don't let that fool you. Walked in and was immediately seated, took my beverage order and then food order and the food was back in just over 5 minutes. I ordered a beef Chimichanga and had a choice of bean or rice. It came with piled high with a salad with sour cream and guacamole. It was perfect. Best I have had in a long time and the portions are hugh to the point that I could not eat it all and the price was right. Because we are short on staff this week because of vacations, our Receptionist is having to take a late lunch. I was so impressed with my lunch, I grabbed one for her as well. Update-10/21/17: I don't know why I keep giving this place additional chances. My kids love the white dip and the dessert sopapillas so this is a restaurant they want to go to. Personally, I have already found a replacement that well surpasses La Pelusa in customer service. Today we were inside and seated well before 3pm but the waiter did not come to the table to take our order until after 3pm and of course, we were told that we could not order off the lunch menu because it was after 3pm. I asked even though we were seated well before 3pm and he said no still. Whatever! Then here lately/past few visits, there is always something they are out of...today, strawberry margaritas! I am not a margarita fan but my daughter is. I ordered a Michelada and it was very watered down with no hot sauce kick...disappointment! I really hate that this restaurant has gotten the big head and begun dissing their customers, especially ones who used to frequent weekly. I have noticed a decline in business here on days I pass by headed to their replacement! Give Taqueria Tacontento a try, you won't be disappointed! Good Luck La Pelusa! I always order Tacos de Asada with corn tortillas and there is never any issue or concerns about my order. I have even posted pics on here of my takeout order Yesterday, I was told that my request was not an option. When did this change? Since last week? Then I was told corn tortillas was not an option? Since when? Why are corn tortillas now an issue? I was charged for each item on the plate separately. Even though it's a dinner combination and I just ordered it last week. Long story short, you need to try this place. Yelp pointed me in its direction, and I am so glad that it did. I was eating solo for dinner on a Monday. I was seated right away. Service was spot on, and FRIENDLY. But most important, my food was delicious. I ordered a taco salad. It surpassed ALL expectation. The shell was fresh. The chicken was cooked with onions and peppers. It could not have been any better. It's two days later, and I think I'm going to get another today. When you are in Statesville, this is a most have. Arrived in Statesville tonight for 2 day work assignment. There are 2 Mexican restaurants listed with similar reviews half a mile apart so i figured I drive by both and then decide where to go... well La Pelusa won... :) Coming from NY and used to real authentic Mexican food in Jackson Heights this place gets a soild 5 Star rating which I do not give out often. Some reviewer warned about huge portions... well they were right... my portion was huge and that is after cutting it down because I felt full already after the chicken wing appetizer and all those chips. To top it off $1.10 Happy hour beer...real Mexican too... certainly needed for those spicy wings. My standard carnita plate minus the rice and salad came out perfect. The meat was real tender and not the least bit dry. Someone in the kitchen certainly knows what he/she is doing. The service was friendly and attentive. Not a single complaint about anything... Delicious Mexican food with friendly service. My husband and I stopped here during a long haul on I-40 and were not disappointed. A meal starts with chips and salsa, but also a creamy house-made sauce. He ordered a burrito, and I got the chicken soup. Portions were large and the flavors were very good. I also recommend the hibiscus iced tea (rosa de jamaica). The chicken soup had a rich broth, lots of vegetables and tender chicken, topped off with a generous amount of diced avocado. Yum! Came to this little place and found enough parking. However the inside of the restaurant is very small. We were seated right beside the door and the winter chill would hit us every few seconds.
