Absolutely the best Italian pastries and cakes around!!! Everything is so fresh and the service is AMAZING!!

My wife wanted to pick up some cookies to bring to a family function. This is the closest Italian bakery to us in Brookfield so we tried them. The price was a little cheaper than I expected which was nice. The almond horseshoe was very good. All the cookies we ordered were delicious with the exception of the rainbow cookies. They did not have enough jelly, which made them a little dry. Other than that, loved this place. read more

Perfect treasure in a fantastic town. Everything I buy, I later regret not having gotten 2-3 instead of one. Canoli's are great, all other treats are well prepared, look awesome and as fresh and delicious as they look. Always enjoy buying a box full for holidays to share with friends and family. Parking is convenient, staff is helpful, can get a little busy, but woth a small wait. First time getting a cake from Varano Bakery being new to the Bethel area and super impressed!!! We spoke with Theresa about our options for my sons birthday cake, she was extremely helpful via email and then in person when ordering. We gave a photo of what we wanted for our dinosaur theme cake for a 2nd bday party and it was executed perfectly. I was thrilled how great it came out! The cake was white cake, cannoli filling with chocolate buttercream. Everyone was very impressed with the cake appearance but also raved about the cake taste once served. We definitely found our new spot for cakes!! All around 10/10. The gentleman that helped package up our cake at pick up was extremely thoughtful in helping make the ride home with the cake as easy as possible to keep it safe during travels. I wish i found them sooner when we moved out to fairfield county! Had discovered one italian bakery that is phenomenal in Northford but way too far (also their grain pie was a bust!) Varano's is on the main drag of Bethel and their cannoli's are great-nice crunchy shell with a smooth tasty and not overly sweet filling-best one around here. Their pignoli cookies are so good, soft and perfect almond paste taste..another winner. Their seasonal wheat and grain pies are the best you are going to find. I lived in Brooklyn for a few years and nothing compared to Monte Leone's for me but this place comes super close!! Was a little disappointed with their ricotta pie but not worth knocking them down a star-it's a matter of preference. Their homemade muffins are very good. We placed an order for a Baptism cake and were asked to come with pictures of what we wanted. We did that, and were very clear. We wanted all white sprinkles surrounding the cake. Everything but the top of the cake should have them. We also said no trim piping on the cake. They called to confirm this a few days before we needed it. When we picked up the cake it had sprinkles on less than half of it and piping on the bottom. Why bother asking for pictures and calling to confirm details when you won't do it anyway? read more

I've been driving by this place for years and finally stopped in to check them out. Very friendly and helpful staff. I tried the Italian cookies (my own assortment) and I'm shocked to say they were the best I've had. Believe me, I've had quite a few. They were very fresh and delicious tasting, dangerous to keep around the house. I also tried some cheese danish which was good as well. Parking is fairly convenient and ample behind the building. Highly recommend trying the cookies at a minimum. read more

Loved this little mom and pop bakery. Being a recent Bronx transplant to Connecticut I was searching for a local bakery on par with what I'm used to in the Bronx and I've definitely found it! Christmas Eve and the line is wrapped around the block. And for good reason. Everything I got was delicious. The cannolis and the rainbow cookies were especially excellent. This bakery!!!!!!!!!!- my son and daughter in law surprised me with a delicious vanilla and chocolate birthday cake. It had raspberry filling- just a thin streak of it in the middle. This cake was unbelievable!!!!!!! I thought I died and went to heaven!!!!!! Brilliant location, super clean, friendly staff and amazing desserts. Called in a panic when I realized I need a dessert for my son's birthday dinner. I called ahead and talked to Ashley, who was incredibly friendly and helpful. She gave me a description of every cake available and didn't rush me at all. She suggested setting aside a cake so it was there when I arrived which was perfect bc it got crowded later on. What An amazing bakery!! I've been meaning to try this place out for a while, and I'm glad that I did. I got a bunch of pastries on Easter morning and it was not too crowded at all (it was during COVID and they were taking great precautions). We got about a dozen random little pastries and cakes for a wide assortment of things. It overall only cost like $12ish dollar which is such an amazing deal considering the amount of food that we got and the quality of it. I'm snacking on their delicious Italian cookies as I type this. While I haven't been to the bakery myself, their giant Italian cookie platters make an appearance at every family event, and they never fail to disappoint. They're always fresh, not too sweet, and just melt in your mouth. The Florentines are my personal favorite, and they're always so crispy and buttery. The only complaint I have is that the chocolate they use is the weak, watery kind. However, I had never really liked Italian cookies until I tasted these. Short and sweet - I'm short, the cake was sweet. Walked into Varano's ONE week before my wedding - long story, not my fault. Though any vendor could have looked askance at me and refused my business, Steve only looked askance at me briefly (and rightly so) and totally worked with me to literally put the icing on the cake for what turned out to be a beautiful wedding and reception. I've been to Tuscany, Florence and Rome, and ate all sorts of authentic fare, including pastries, cantucci and all sorts of cookies. Varano's is where I go to get foods that stoke my memory cells and allow me to be transported back to Italy for at least a little while. If I had to find any fault with them, it's that they don't do Arthur Avenue style bread, but I realize this requires totally different ovens than this little shop has the space for. Their cakes are truly awesome and well worth the drive to secure them! I hit them for breakfast several times a week, and enjoy meeting up with other regulars for our "coffee and." Good pastries (nothing exceptional, I've had better) but the reason for only 2 stars is the lack of customer service. I have been going there for 6 years, and each time the owner was cold, rude, or simply stood in silence. A few times after a large purchase (I was the only one in the store) I was struggling to get the door open with the pastries and an infant, and he simply stood there and watched.
