I meant to write this review sooner but here it is. Since moving to Fairfield a few years back, I have tried half a dozen bakeries in the area for specialty events (i.e., kids and family birthdays) from CakeBox to Isabelle & Vincent, Alina's -- you name it. And, there has been not one place besides Chaves Bakery that makes both beautiful custom multi-layered cakes, but also cakes that actually taste wonderfully. Their team is timely, creative, and the cost is very reasonable ($150 for a custom cake for 25). Everyone who has seen their cakes at our parties is blown away by the final product. I've purchased them for the last two years and they do not disappoint. In terms of flavors, we initially kept with traditional choices (oreo, vanilla, chocolate). I really do love this bakery/deli. Their sandwiches are tasty, their cakes and brownies are to die for. However, a woman who works there and is not so great at speaking english, has made my experiences there not so good. Everytime I encounter her she rolls her eyes at me, sighs and gives me an attitude. I have been nothing but a kind and pleasant customer and some days when I experience this from her, it ruins my day. She could not even answer my question about what type of cake i was purchasing, stating she had no clue.... I want to continue going to this business because the food and baked goods are excellent, but if I encounter this every time, I may just stop going. I also wanted to add that anytime I order sandwiches from her and add something to them (pickles, onions, mayo or whatever) she does not make my sandwiches correctly or put what I asked for on them. I just called the Fairfield Store to find out if I have to order a Carrot Cake or they have them on the shelf. I also needed 2 large loafs of rye bread for next week for a party . I read they run out of Rye bread every day . The girl put me on hold to talk to the baker about ordering the Carrot Cake . After 2 or 3 minutes I started to watch the clock . Another 5 minutes went by so I was on hold about 7 or 8 minutes . They can make and take that Carrot Cake and shove it because I won't be doing business with them . read more

Let's start off by saying the quality in taste is great, however the way they "take care of their customer" after they made a mistake! I ordered a marble cheesecake for my best friends 30th birthday and wanted to surprise her with a cake. I asked if a green martini could be drawn on it (I know people who have ordered from this bakery chain but at another. Location) and decided to trust them. I went to pick up the cake and when ai asked to see it, the lady was hesitant about opening the box. -red flag She opened it and my mouth dropped- it looked as if my child drew on it. I immediately told her I did not like it and if there was someone who can fix it-no. Can I speak to a manager? No.- she's not here! So I rolled my eyes paid for the ugly cake and left. I was beyond upset. I drove home and called the store and expressed my unhappiness and again asked for a manager- she wouldn't be back until Tuesday (it was Saturday) I asked to speak to the owner- not there. I called the other location (state st) and was told the owner wasn't there either but a message would be left for him to call me. Almost two weeks later still no call. I called back the original store and spoke with the manager, told her the whole ordeal and her response was "yea i was on vacation and there isn't much I can do about it since so much time has passed" seriously!!! The employees shouldn't take on a job they don't know how to do! And the fact no one called me shows they do not care! I offered to bring in a photo of the cake and she said it wouldn't be necessary she believed me and would leave a $5 credit to use later. I just used the credit and will NEVER return. I can't get back the moment my friend had to open her birthday cake and see this disaster and nor did I get an apology. I guess since so many people like it here my opinion didn't matter! You know what I'm not going to miss about the having-little-kid days? The super blue frosting on cakes that stains not only your mouth and hands but everything in site. Now first let me say these ladies answering the phone are the nicest, most helpful, pleasant people I have ever dealt with ordering in my life. And I only went here because we had a cake from them at a friend's party and it was delicious - not at all too sweet like so many other cakes, plus my friend said their prices are reasonable. So let me review her cake- 5 stars in looks, and 4 in taste. But as luck would have it, when one month later I serve a Paw Patrol cake- that could have won awards it was so perfectly constructed (until dad took it out of the box and messed it all up - be careful with that!), the cake itself caused instant sugar shock after the first spoonful. I have never tasted anything so sweet in my life. White cake with chocolate filling- just what my friend had. She even had the ridiculous amount of blue frosting on top. So why SO different? I don't know. It's one of life's mysteries. I was just glad that I went up to some mom and asked her if she wanted any of our cake. She then sent all 5 of her kids plus some others for some and the cake was finished. Because I didn't have the heart to throw it out. I go Chaves pretty regularly to pick up desserts for family parties. I've picked up everything from stuffed breads, to pastries, cookies and pies and I have never been disappointed. Their cannoli's are one of my favorites. I highly recommend stopping by before your next get together, your company will be impressed. read more

I went to Chaves yesterday to buy a cookie platter for my sister's house. The cookies were beautifully wrapped and had a nice bow, Perfect for a gift! The cookies were fresh and everyone found something they enjoyed in that cookie platter. The platters are already prepared and ready for purchase. The only downfall is if you want to choose your own cookies, they will only box them for you. They don't create custom make platters for walk-ins. read more

Here's a place that needs a little help. As a bakery it is fine. Nothing really wrong with it. Breads and rolls are fresh and delicious. Cakes are good but it's a mystery how long some of that stuff has been sitting around. As a deli, however, this place needs some TLC. They have a posted list of sandwiches that are usually pretty good. Trouble is, you never get them prepared the same way twice. Sometimes they're fat, sometimes they're skinny. Sometimes they're grilled, other times not. It's kind of a crapshoot. Don't expect consistency. Someone should take the time to train the employees how to make the same sandwich every time. Also, someone needs to keep an eye on the coffee as it is frequently out. Or there are no lids. Or there are no napkins. You get the picture. This could be a great place if only they could get their act together. read more

Food is OK, but the service is awful. The help stays in the kitchen gabbing while you wait for them to finish their stories. While waiting, many of the customers are also complaining about this. The sandwiches are good here and frugally priced, which is great. Same goes for the bakery - I love getting cakes and cookies from here. However, I am currently eating the spiciest Reuben I've ever had - looks like they put Chipotle mayo on it instead of Russian or Thousand Island dressing. This sort of thing is a relatively frequent occurrence here, especially when you order during the lunch rush. There does not seem to be sufficient line management or training on the food offered (my coworker picked up our lunch a little while ago and told me that the individual who took the order did not know what a Reuben was, even though it's a numbered item on their menu). And while I can make it through the World's Spiciest Reuben, should anyone with dietary restrictions (i.e. no mayonnaise or issues with spicy foods) received this, it would be inedible. Editing to add that I did call to let them know, but cannot leave work to replace. The woman I spoke with apologized and thanked me for letting them know, stating "They probably used the chipotle sauce because it looks the same." No offer was made to rectify in any way. Again, I did say that I couldn't come for a replacement because I was at work, but I said it prior to any offers were made - there's no guarantee that they would have made that suggestion. Beyond that, no other potential resolutions were offered. read more

So you mean to tell me you can make this cake standing on these little sticks and you tell me today that you dont feel comfortable with putting my cake on my Stand then the elder lady in turned tells me that she'll bake my cake but she will not put my cake together the I have to put it together on my own this is UNACCEPTABLE unbelievable and I feel discriminated against then your gonna have the nerve to tell me to give you a picture of my stand so you can do research on my stand like my cake doesn't belong on that cakestand.. you should always be kind to ppl that come into your establishment cause you'll never know who will stand before you in there greatness and you turn and offend them. Got a buffalo chicken wrap, it came out flat as opposed to round because the girl making it had no idea what she was doing, didn't have enough meat in it, she forgot to put hot sauce on it... just an awful experience. Nice to have a local bakery back in Fairfield. It has great danish and pastries and the bread is fresh and good. They have deli sandwiches for lunch. It gets crowded on Sunday morning but service is quick and would highly recommend it. We could use more bakeries like Chavez. read more

Everyone knows Chaves for their Portuguese rolls. For me, Portuguese rolls ARE Chaves rolls. But what puts this location over the top is the deli. The sandwiches that come out of their kitchen can go toe to toe with any of the great delis in the area. And they are slightly cheaper here taboot! read more
