Buyers Beware!!! Yesterday we had teacher appreciation/alumni and senior night. I ordered a sheet cake, oversized cupcake and cookies 2 weeks ago. I show up to the bakery to pick up our order at noon and I'm told it's not ready yet it will be about an hour and they will deliver it for the inconvenience. I explained the games started at 4:00 so we had to have them by 3:00. I was assured it would be! They never showed up! We had approximately 150 people there and no cake! Even worse the owner would not answer my phone calls or text messages. I have never blasted a business but there's NEVER any excuse to literally ghost your customers!

Alessandro's Italian Artisan Bakery - And then there were none. (I barely got this photo before they were all eaten up).

I keep a running collection of places to try in Chattanooga on my usually-annual trips to the area…read more I added Alessandro's maybe a year or two ago, assuming I could stop along the way in the future. Instead, I came up with my parents to visit the cast iron museum and realized that this place was right around the corner - so I had to visit! This little shop is tucked in the downtown area of South Pittsburg. Much of the inventory is on display as you enter. It's impressive the variety of product the owner has managed to offer in a relatively limited space. This is a legit Italian bakery. The owner was in the shop and made small talk with us about where he learned to bake, how important his family recipes were to him, and about all the care and consideration that goes into each product. He also very generously shared a sample of both a fig spread and a sort of savory feta dip. The feta dip was good but the fig spread was great -- subtly sweet with a very satisfying dense and sticky texture. My parents and I both ordered an Italian cream cake from the cold case. We worried about it on the drive home given the temperature, but the owner said it would be fine and even recommended we take our slices out of the fridge to warm up for 15-20 minutes before eating it. Both recommendations were totally true; our cakes kept well for a few days and were definitely improved by warming slightly (so the icing would be a bit more malleable and smooth). The cakes were absolutely delicious -- not too sweet, a fantastic crumb, and full of nice almond flavor. I also got some chocolate chip biscotti and an Italian thumbprint biscotti with some fig spread on top. The chocolate chip biscotti was my least favorite item, though it was still tasty - it hedged a little on the too-dry side for me, even as far as biscotti goes. Still, I wouldn't object if someone offered me one to eat for free, lol. The almond thumbprint biscotti was completely delightful from start to finish. The chopped nuts inside the cookie added a great crunch, and the delightful fig spread on top added needed moisture and softness and an explosion of fruity flavor. Would highly recommend stopping by to try this bakery if you're ever in the area - heck, it's worth a special trip, if you love pastries like I do :)

I could start out with a complement of the orange biscotti and it's firm and forgiving texture,…read moreright there in the middle where it belongs. Or the absolutely fantastic, sweet and citrusy flavor. Or maybe aI will switch over to the organic fig preserves. I'm not big on organic, but I do like the fact that you're not messing with the tried and true recipe. Large pieces of fig in there just waiting to sit on top of that hot biscuit. I tried a little sample in the store, and it was really old-school delicious. Instead I think I'll start with the fantastic service and truly positive personality of these small shop owners here in South Pittsburgh, Tennessee. Dan and his wife are true artisan's. Handmade. Homemade here is not a stretch. And the number of things they have available in store is limited, but only limited by the fact that each and everyone is handmade by Dan and Alys Alessandro. I understand they make all kinds of delicious pastry and such...more than what even we found (and it was plenty!). And that cannoli we ate right at the counter was Top Shelf. These folks have got it dialed in here in SoPi. Just a super cool shop.

Absolutely terrible. They clearly don't know how to plan catering events. A couple of us signed up…read morefor a dinner cruise and Mimi's caters it. We were the last ones and ALL the food was gone except for this minced meat and canned green beans. They had the audacity to give us basically one bite of potatoes and call it a serving when we watched everyone ahead of us have healing plates of chicken, potatoes, & cornbread. That was just poor planning. One of my friends didn't even get a cornbread scrap and they gave her more ground beef like that was acceptable. The food was bland too. I wouldn't get food from this place if it was the only place left open in that town. When I said they didn't plan it well her response was she made half chicken and half beef. Well, clearly that was a bad idea and you still didn't make enough side dishes. Nobody and I mean NOBODY wanted that ground beef. The lies were gross too... the dough was like leftover pastry dough with canned apple filling and a bunch of granulated sugar dumped on top of it. Unless something major changes, absolutely don't get food here or you'll be disappointed.
