We had a terrible experience with this service, starting with an appointment where the tutor never showed up after we waited 45 minutes. Following that, we had immense difficulty matching with a suitable tutor. When we finally found one, they had a very limited schedule and canceled after just one class. As a result, my daughter was unable to get the help she needed and had to drop her Class!! is so terrible... We had only used 1.5 hours of our 8-hour monthly plan, and the failure was entirely on their end. I had to demand a refund, they don't let me, on a service they cannot deliver. read more

When we first signed up, their pricing was based on a consumption model (pay-as-you-go). Initially, we even purchased a couple of prepaid bundles However, at some point, Varsity Tutors switched to a monthly subscription model. This change was made without any formal email notification or phone call to inform us that they would begin charging monthly fees, regardless of whether we used their services. As a result, for six months after we stopped tutoring, they charged over $400 per month without our knowledge. We only discovered this during a routine credit card audit. When we raised this issue, my husband and I spent hours dealing with their customer service. We encountered significant frustration, including having to repeatedly explain the situation and being passed around to representatives who lacked the authority to resolve the issue. In the end, they refunded only three out of the six months in dispute. This resolution was deeply unsatisfactory. Varsity Tutors switched us to a new pricing model without our consent, charged us for months of unused services, and refused to fully rectify the situation. The first I did not even meet - she canceled twice - the first time with less than 24 hours till our meeting and the other one minute after the meeting was supposed to have started. The second was entirely unprepared for our session. The third had a terrible wifi connection and then canceled our second session with less than twenty-four hour notice, after that, she just disappeared and I did not have a tutor assigned. I called the customer service line each time and expressed my concerns, but they were incredibly unhelpful and didn't really listen to my concerns or what I wanted done - just saying that this "is so unusual for our tutors" and asking if I was giving up on my learning goals. Furthermore, the process of reassigning a tutor was too long for the time period you are given for your sessions. For a company that highlighted their specialty in assigning tutors, this was frustrating to say the least. read more

We started with large group free classes which were amazing and eventually got VT+ for $19 a month. It was great for a long time then they suddenly changed the classes to one time only. Waste of money for sure! Customer service is one of the worst anywhere. It was so great but editing to the reflect the absolutely horrible changes. DO NOT SUBSCRIBE! Original My daughters absolutely love varsity tutors classes especially the VT+. We've taken a few Star courses as well and even being a very large class they are interactive,fun and informative. Most of the teachers are amazing,know what they teach and make class not just educational but fun. VT+ is definitely worth it! Science,LA,art/creativity,history etc so much to choose from. BAIT AND SWITCH ILLEGAL PRACTICES!! I found a tutor I love on this internet education sight but it is the corrupt business practices that are not only unethical but illegal. I enrolled in a monthly amount of classes. You LOSE your money if you are sick or any other reason cannot complete the session. They told me they would extend my saved sessions but long story short are now saying they won't give them to me. However, they are messing with the wrong person. I have documentation of not only them saying I would be able to use these saved sessions beyond the time they are now quoting but the fact that they roped me in on a membership that suddenly disappeared. When I questioned "when did they drop that membership" it was conveniently dropped a month ago. I checked with lawyers and this is open and shut bait and switch. They send detailed follow up emails after sessions that you child has but then mysteriously go silent after you call and cancel, making it appear that all is fine - however they are still charging your account without advising that no tutoring sessions are being used. They then conveniently claim no one called them and they have no record of cancellation. They state that in the terms and conditions there is no refund for unused hours so you are basically paying them $$$ for nothing. SCAM!!!! read more

This service was a complete waste of time. The first tutor they set me up with said he needed the hour (PAID HOUR) to review material so he could work with me the next session. When I showed up for the next session he had no memory of that and spent 10 min looking for the material I sent then spent the next 50min reading it to me. Then they set me up with a new tutor and credited the first session since it was wasted completely (although the second session was also a complete waste of time and money also). The next tutor was NOT informed that I needed help in one of the subjects I'd initially requested!!!!! So he was not able to help me with the homework!!!! I finally called to cancel and be done with them and requested a full refund since the entire experience was a complete waste of time and money and I did not get ANY of the service that I had paid for and they say "they cannot do a refund per their terms and conditions". Well ethically I would think that I should also receive the service I have given them money for. But apparently they don't agree with that. Don't waste your money here. read more

I have purchased 1,800 hours for my niece last year, but no one was clear to explain that ours expire!!! after certain period of time. So, if your child did not use them, this company will take them, still them, and tell you later that the hours are non-refundable. I am not the leave a bad review type but I have never been more infuriated with a company. I was taking an intensive college level statistics course last year so I purchased help with varsity tutors. My tutor would basically never answer when I requested an appointment. The day that I would request would come and pass and I would hear nothing from him so I called and asked for a refund which they refused. I'm struggling in an economics class right now so I went to go log in again and my class balance was zero so I called and the man told me my classes had expired. No problem I thought we'd resume when she returned - come to find out 2 weeks later I would LOOSE my hours I had already paid for. Their customer service agents are horrible and rude. They told me I was supposed to call and arrange for a new tutor or loose my pre-paid hours. Where is the internal communication?? I was in a rush to find a tutor for my son on Tuesday for a test on Friday. I spoke to a Varsity Tutor rep who guaranteed me a tutor before Friday. And within the same breath asked for payment for the tutoring. I was in a bind and gave them payment. Wednesday came and we got connected with a tutor, late in the evening, that said she could not meet with him until after his test. I contacted the help line and they said to go to Instant Tutoring on line. Well, they could not find a tutor for him there either. So we wasted two full days of waiting for a tutor that was guaranteed! Yes we came late to the game, but they should have told us the chances of getting a tutor was slim and we could have tried some where else. And yes my son did not do very good on the exam!!! Worst scam ever! Don't buy their services. Purchased minimum set of hours which cost $750 a few years ago. Every attempt I've made to use their services over the years has failed. Spoke to Lauren today at 11 am and requested a chemistry tutor to help my daughter prepare for a test tomorrow. She indicated they have lots of chemistry tutors and that I would get an email and text to confirm a session for this evening between 5-8 pm. I called back at 4:45 pm because I hadn't heard from anyone. I spoke to Monica who informed me that they are unable to schedule a tutoring session for tonight and that they don't have many chemistry tutors. She apologized that no one informed me. If this was the 1st time they failed to connect me with a tutor, I would chalk it up to an accident. This has occurred every attempt I've made to use their service over the last few years. I can share multiple apology emails from them. I tried to get an English tutor a few months ago. I never received anything until 13 min before a session was starting and then got charged for a session for not showing up. Once again, I contacted Varsity Tutors and they apologized and credited back my hour for the session. 3 more attempts failed and so I simply gave up. Previously, I had originally contacted Varsity Tutors for a math tutor. They've failed every time across three subjects. Don't waste your time or money. Getting a tutor should not be this difficult. I'm very surprised at how this company conducts business. We have been with Variety Tutors for several years and purchased a lot of hours for our three boys. We were told that the hours never expire. This was confirmed when I recently spoke with someone through the customer service line. My concern was moved up the ladder and I was told I would get a phone call but instead received an email explaining that their policy changed and our hours expired. I don't have record of anyone calling me or emailing me prior to the change in our original plan. I called again to ask to please speak to someone to get more information and I was told that my grievance would be addressed and that I would receive an answer in a few days. Once again I haven't heard a word from anyone in the company. I've been completely ignored. In the past I've only written reviews if I have something positive to say. This is my first negative review, ever. We lost a lot of tutoring hours and a lot of money with zero explanation. I think we were way too patient to try 3 times to start with. After getting disappointed from the local tutoring academy, my wife and I decided to try Varsity tutor for my son. I was very skeptical at the beginning as they were asking me to pay upfront to buy "the hours" of the tutor. However, after doing some research, it seems like this is a routine thing for the online tutoring agency. Since i spent similar amount of money on my son for his local tutoring academy, I decided to buy the hours. Immediately after the purchase, they called me to ask little bit about my son to assign a tutor who not only has a qualification of teaching but accommodate even my son's personality ( my son is shy, introvert kid). Varsity tutor then sent me a profile of the tutor and ensured me, if I don't like the first session, they will give a credit and keep on sending me a different tutors until I find the one that my son likes. This part is where I am very impressed because they really are the EXPERT at doing what they do... the tutor named David who they match my son with.... is EXCELLENT! My son respects him because not only he makes subject more interesting, but he teaches in a way that my son can absorb the material easily. Lastly, my another reason for giving 5 stars is because varsity tutor assigned me to a personal consultant named Ralph who is checking on us routinely as how tutoring sessions are going. We were very pleased with most of the tutors that worked with our daughter - two for math, one for biology, and one for SAT test prep. The biology tutor (Rachel) was outstanding, as was the SAT test prep tutor (Brian). One of the math tutors was good and the other was mediocre. In hindsight, we should have asked for a new tutor after our first session with the first math tutor. We opted for the online service, which gave us the flexibility to set up our tutorial sessions much more easily. But my advice to anyone seeing this service for your busy high school student - try to request a tutor in your same time zone. We are on the west coast, and our first math tutor was in Central time, and she literally yawned throughout the session since it was late for her. read more

I have been really pleased with Varsity Tutors. They were extremely flexible with my son's tutoring and helped him to really increase his score on the ACT. My son attends a boarding school in St. Louis, Missouri. He has a very tight schedule with many required activities. Varsity Tutors found a tutor who lived very close to the boarding school. He worked with my son's schedule and came out to the dorm to tutor him. Then, when he was back home in California for breaks, Varsity Tutors lined my son up with a different tutor who was able to meet with him during the breaks. This was extremely helpful and allowed my son to gain new strategies and different approaches to the ACT test, as each tutor shared something a little different with my son. This was my first time trying varsity tutors, I needed a tutor to help me with my class I went from a 60% to an 80% in less than two weeks. The tutor I had was an online tutor named Brenda. Follow what she asked you to do to help your sessions go smooth, and you will be able to use your time wisely. I went through about 3 nine hour sessions be cause I thought I would use less hours but the hours went by so fast. Also the lady who help me with my account her name was Mele was also helpful just tell her what you are looking for and she will help you find the best match for your subject, and will give you an ideal of how many hours will be if it you and she always makes her self available when you feel like your going to panic and will help you find a new tutor if the one you have is not working out for you. Our goal was for our son to improve his writing skills as well as his comprehension skills. While it is advantageous to have online tutoring, it all depends on the luck of the draw with the tutor. We initially got a great tutor but because we had to change or tutoring schedule, we ended up getting Brent. He was fine to start with but I could not really see a marked improvement in our son's writing skills although he started reading more. The last session never happened as we only had 30 minutes. So we ended up losing the money on the 30 minutes. I would only use Varsity tutors if I have no other option. It was quite clear that Brent really did not care about our satisfaction. Now, my son goes to a tutor who is local and she is amazing. Yes, we are paying more but it is totally worth it and I can see marked improvement and I am updated with what is being worked on and how he is improving. read more

Just to be clear, I think our salesperson works out of an office in Irvine. But we use the online tutoring, which means, subject to time-zone issues, we get the choice of tutors from across the country. We don't have to worry about traffic delays, our pets, or a strange person in our house. And since our child's needs are for higher level high school classes we don't have to worry about the availability of a competent tutor in our immediate area. And the fact is, I don't have to deal exclusively with the local salesperson either. I can be hard-sold, up-sold, and have my ear talked off by someone in their national call center too - all so you don't realize that only about 40% of that exorbitant fee you're paying for tutoring actually gets into the hands of the tutor. And when our local salesperson gets done arm-twisting the previous customer, be assured they will contact you REPEATEDLY about that voicemail you left, so be careful about the contact telephone number you give them. This company is VERY sales-heavy. It's almost like the actual tutors themselves are an after-thought. And the blocks of tutoring time that they sell you expire in one year, so use them or lose them. Still, we currently have a tutor that is a very good match for our child's needs and we're not willing to mess with a good thing. But we are looking for other options where we can be sure that the next tutor is properly compensated. read more
