About a month ago, we attended a parent meeting where we were told that Melody had apparently been struggling for approximately three months, and there were suspicions that she had been using a calculator to complete her work. My first thought was, why am I just now hearing about this? If my daughter has been struggling for months, why wasn't I called after the first week? The second week? Even the first month? As parents, we are partners in our children's education. We can't help solve a problem that no one tells us exists. Then today, I received another message suggesting that because Melody took a long time to complete her division problems during class but submitted the correct answers shortly after logging off, there were again concerns about whether she was being honest. As a father, that hurt. Before assuming my daughter was cheating, shouldn't someone first ask whether she simply didn't understand the concept? I immediately pulled Melody away from her session and asked her to work through a single long division problem with me. Within 10 to 15 seconds, I identified the exact step she was missing. Ten to fifteen seconds. That was all it took. She wasn't cheating. She wasn't using a calculator. She wasn't trying to be dishonest. She was simply missing one step in the long division process. Once I pointed it out, everything clicked, and she continued solving the problems correctly. That left me asking one question. If I, as her father, could identify the problem in 10 to 15 seconds, why couldn't the instructor who has worked with my daughter for nearly five years? When I brought this up, I was told by the owner that Kumon is a self learning program, that instructors do not identify where students are struggling, and that the program relies on repetition rather than instruction. I appreciate the honesty, but I also wish someone had told us that five years ago. Because if instructors are not expected to identify misconceptions, offer brief guidance, or distinguish between confusion and dishonesty, then I genuinely have to ask: What exactly have we been paying for? I never expected someone to sit with Melody for an hour and tutor her through every worksheet. That isn't realistic, nor was it ever my expectation. But I did expect that after watching my daughter grow for five years, someone would know her well enough to recognize when something wasn't right. I expected an experienced instructor to stop for just a moment and say, "Walk me through this problem," or, "I think you may have missed a step." That isn't tutoring. That isn't doing the work for her. That's called teaching. Instead, it felt like the first conclusion was that she wasn't being honest. What hurt even more was hearing that perhaps Kumon simply wasn't the right fit for Melody anymore. Think about that for a moment. A little girl who has been part of this program since she was three years old finally encounters a concept she struggles with, a concept that countless children find difficult, and instead of someone taking a few moments to identify the misunderstanding, the recommendation is to find another tutoring program. After five years, that's incredibly difficult to accept. Children are supposed to struggle. That's how they learn. The true measure of an educational program isn't how it handles students when everything is easy. It's how it responds when a child finally hits a roadblock. In our case, it felt like the moment Melody needed encouragement, patience, and just a small amount of guidance, the response wasn't support, it was suspicion. For families considering Kumon, understand what you're signing up for. It is a repetition based, self learning program. If your child thrives with independent practice, it may be a great fit. However, if you're looking for instructors who actively observe students, recognize when they're developing a misconception, ask a few questions, and help redirect them before questioning their integrity, that was not our experience. After five years, we aren't leaving because Melody struggled with long division. We're leaving because when she finally needed someone in her corner, it felt like the program gave up on her instead.

We had let her know we would be away on vacation and our daughter would work on her packets upon her return. We flew in Monday and took her to her session on Tuesday. She was not caught up but we asked for her usual amount of packets because we had every intention to help her catch up. She kept saying she would not giver her any and that we did not know how Kumon works (she has been going for months at this point). We were explaining to her that we would catch up in the order received and to keep the packets coming. She was not listening to a word we said and was just so combative in her responses. Everytime we would speak it was an "mhmm" as in to hurry up or a teenager rolling eyes to parent but completely dismissing the information. She went back in and tossed the packet on the desk for our 7 year old and said "Here is your packet since your dad got so mad." Our child came out to the car asking what happened and why did her teacher say that and why she was saying other things about her dad to the other staff. My husband went back in to speak to her she came out and immediately walked away and would not speak to him. She should have NEVER discussed anything about a child's parent in front of the child. I asked her to cancel my daughter's membership immediately that same day. In all fairness, I was warned by other parents and Teachers that this specific location was not the best but it was close to home so I figured we would try. Also many times you see bad reviews and you think it would be a one off. This is my warning to you IT IS NOT A ONE OFF. I think it may just be her personality at this point. I am making sure I share my experience with fellow parents in La Mirada at the schools, sports fields, dance teams, and more.

The kids love how she explains math so clearly. They just get it when she teaches them. And they really get it because she's asking them questions during the session to check their understanding.
