It's just an all around lovely place to be. Host an event here, join an event, pick a book, get a coffee and a snack, relax. This place is so adorable! I used to come here back in college for a group meeting each month and still occasionally will find myself strolling back in for a relaxing time to myself or with friends. This is perfect for the target audience! But there's more than just books and coffee! I came in with my Mom as well as my grandparents that were visiting from the south and they all loved it! The ice cream prices are super cheap, the location is nice and central. The gimmick is cool, ice cream, espresso and books, all in a beautiful building that looks like a converted old timey bank (complete with vault-door guarded children's area!) The staff are super kind and accommodating, and the book selection isnt the same hundred titles you see everywhere. My only qualms are the ice cream is kept a bit too cold, and it's nothing special. This is by far my favorite coffee shop and book store in the area. The staff is so friendly and helpful, I've never had a bad experience with any of them. They really try to make the Vault a place for everyone in the community to enjoy. The atmosphere is great, warm and inviting but also super kid friendly, with a play area in the old bank vault. It is perfect for parents that can't find the peace in their homes to dig into a good book or someone who needs to get some work done without constant interruptions of their amazing but needy offspring. They have a good selection of books, especially for the amount of space they have. There's often read aloud days where kids can dress up and hear their favorite book followed by a craft or project afterwards. They have authors come in for signings and meet and greets which are also a lot of fun to attend. The coffee, tea and ice cream are all delicious and the kids cones are $1 so that is definitely one of our favorite things to do during summer. We will be back again and again, thank you for making such a fun and inviting place for our little town to enjoy. read more

I've worked professionally with writers for over twenty years so I've seen the inside of many, many indie bookshops over the years. This one is hands down, one of my absolute favourites. It's a simple stop off I-5, so if you are driving the Portland- Seattle route and need to take a break, it's perfect. Great atmosphere, open space and tables, the music isn't too loud, a good inventory for such a modest sized town and the coffee is good. Parking is always super easy and it's a nice walk in the area too. But the kicker? The kids room. It's fantastic. For all book loving parents who really sometimes want to look for a book for themselves and have the kids just hang on a minute...this is a great place. It's inside the actual vault, and it has a woodland theme, complete with stuffed fireplace pieces the kids can play with, murals on the walls, a tent and fake grass on the floor. Best of all there's no merch in there, so you can sit outside, sip your coffee, see your kid and not worry about pulling your three year old off the bookshelves every ten seconds. :) read more

I love this little coffee shop and it is the main stop for me along my drive between Seattle and Portland. I found it just by chance, pulling off the highway to grab some coffee and was very pleased. The coffee shop/book store combo caters to the true hipster at heart. We met the owner our first time in and she was very enthusiastic and a good conversationist. Coffee was good too with a selection of dairy free milks if you're into that. My only problem is that it opens late for a coffee shop, 830, but I figure that's cause Castle Rock isn't a very hustle and bustle town, as well as the fact it's mostly a book store. We now plan our drives so that we can stop at Vault after it's open, that's how much we like it. Love the coffee, history, and concept. read more

I went in here for the first time to check it out and was totally impressed with the atmosphere. I had no idea there were used books for purchase (I love used books!) and the selection was great. This shop has some great options for gifts and carries some speciality cards as well. They have hard scoop ice cream and espresso which is an amazing addition.
