I took my dog in due to an eye issue. We couldn't get in to see her regular vet for several days. When I arrived it was explained to me how the process would work. While my dog's issue was considered an emergency, if something of a higher priority would come in then our wait could be much longer. Totally understandable. We were brought to the back almost immediately where they began doing some necessary tests to get to the bottom of my girls issue. My dog was brought back to me and I was told a critical animal came in and the doctor would have to try to stabilize that pet before she could come talk to me. I appreciated being kept informed. When Dr. Lenz came into the room she apologized for the delay which was nice but not expected at all, I totally understand these things happen. It's just like being in the human ER. We were treated with kindness the whole time. I was never pressured to agree to extra testing. Dr. Lenz told me what was suggested and let me decide. When I tell you that I've worked with numerous veterinary practices throughout the Bay Area, both as a professional dog trainer and through rescue, I mean it when I say this was unequivocally one of the worst veterinary experiences I've ever had. The front desk staff member I dealt with was extremely rude and dismissive and seemed visibly bothered that I was interrupting her time on her phone. The clinic appeared to be operating with a skeleton crew. Despite acting as though they were inundated with patients, the lobby was virtually empty. For most of the four hours I was there, it was just me and one elderly person waiting. After nearly four hours, my dog still had not received meaningful care. Eventually, I was told they were going to administer IV fluids and check my dog's blood pressure. Another 30 minutes passed, and no one returned. At that point, I literally took my dog and left. If your animal is experiencing a genuine emergency, I strongly recommend going somewhere else. Based on what I personally witnessed, I would not feel comfortable leaving a pet's life in the hands of this particular clinic. The entire operation felt understaffed and poorly managed, and the level of service was astonishingly bad. Whatever the reason for the staffing situation, patients and their owners ultimately bear the consequences. Go to VEG or another properly staffed emergency hospital. When your dog is experiencing a real emergency, hours matter. I would not gamble those hours here. read more

I've spent a lot of time and money over the past 10 years at VCA with all of my loved pets. This past experience is in no way a negative against the staff as far as their customer service, but more of an "educational" review. I sent this email to them on 1/3, and I haven't received a response yet. Even when this incident occurred, the staff was attentive and went above and beyond to try to resolve the situation. I'm posting this for education to anyone who has a cat. This is a copy of my email on 1/3: Good morning, I wanted to personally write instead of posting a review on Yelp, about our experience when we brought Maple in on Sunday, December 28th. Our family has a long history of pets that we have brought in over the years, and we have never had a negative experience in any way, in fact, I have always spoke highly of the entire staff there when recommending to friends and family. I want to start off by staying that our experience on 12/28 was not a negative one with regards to the staff, but I am writing this email to bring something to your attention in hopes of educating staff to prevent this from happening in the future (and yes, it's not a matter of "if" but a matter of "when" when cats are involved!). Maple has been very sick and multiple visits to her regular vet and your emergency, have happened the past month. We brought her to emergency on 12/28 in hopes of finding out what was wrong and finding a solution. Maple is a very nervous cat and doesn't like strangers, and she really did not like having anything shoved up her butt when she has been in a lot of discomfort due to the diarrhea. Maple was examined, then taken to the room for further testing. I wish I would have objected, but I trusted that staff would do their very best with regard to safety. Unfortunately, Maple escaped their hold and tried to find a place to hide, which was inside an open cabinet where there was an opening to the underside of the steel exam table. I'm sure I don't need to state how dangerous this is and could have been if the outcome was different. Cats are very unpredictable creatures, and after we were invited to go back to the room to try to coax her out, I was surprised at the lack of secure spaces for cats. I want to add that this ordeal ended up being just short of 9 hours at. We tried everything to get her out. This was an extremely stressful and upsetting time for my daughter and I and resulted in my being awake for 24 hours. My daughter ended up calling in sick for work since we left the vet around 6am. I was doing my best not to be upset at staff, but I feel like looking back, there is a bit of negligence on their part. My request is that staff is educated, more careful, and that there is some type of plan in place to mitigate any future occurrences. Maple was lucky. We were lucky that she didn't have a serious health condition and that she was healthy enough to be in that hole for that length of time. My ask is that you also find out from the manufacturer if there is a cover for the inside of that exam table, so that in the off-chance staff leaves that door open, that another cat will not have the same experience as Maple did. My cat was giving symptoms of a sickness so I took him here at around 2am. The front desk woman was so kind I wish I got her name. They immediately took my baby back to get vitals and the doctor was a very sweet girl as well! I asked for fluids, an anti- inflammatory injection, and some antibiotics. I decided not to do any testing because they are about 200-300$ The exam fee is 180$ and I ended up having to spend about 350$ for the entire visit. I've been bringing my animals here for several years with no issue. For the first time I have to complain about their front line reception staff, evening and morning shift. The evening receptionist comes across as completely miserable and the morning receptionist comes across as condescending and rude, they also have a vet tech (dark gothy hair) who also gives off a rude vibe. From appearances, it appears this is a miserable place to work. The actual veterinarian was helpful, authentic and nice. Too bad she's represented by a bunch of weirdos. read more

Our 16 year old puppy left us in the middle of a 3 day weekend and VCA was recommended to us. When we brought her there, the woman who dealt with us showed so much care and compassion, we knew we were at the right place. A few days later, we received a very nice sympathy card that had her paw print on it. When we picked up her ashes, she was in a wooden urn with her name engraved on it that was in a blue velvet bag. I want to begin by saying how truly wonderful every single person at this location is--from the receptionist, to the veterinary doctors, to the medical assistants, and everyone in between. I brought in my cat, Diesel, who unfortunately was not feeling well, and I was completely overwhelmed with emotion. When we received the news that he needed surgery, my heart sank, as I knew I couldn't afford it. Dr. Pepping not only provided thoughtful suggestions but also carried herself in such a way that gave me confidence Diesel was in safe hands. Both she and Dr. England went above and beyond to support us. Dr. England even tried to book Diesel at another location that could better accommodate our budget, but when that option was unavailable and Diesel needed surgery the same day, they guided us toward programs (not credit cards) that made it possible for him to receive the care he needed. Thanks to their compassion and guidance, Diesel was able to get his surgery. We found this place from our primary vet at Brentwood. Just in case if there's an emergency. Our pup accidentally act some cabbage which cause him to have diarrhea and vomit. We were really worried so we rushed him to an emergency. In the morning, only a few people were waiting. I registered our pup and they brought him in right away. Unfortunately, we had to wait a few hrs because the primary vet had not arrived yet. Later they brought us in. We had a consulation with the doctor and she decided to run some tests to make sure nothing is serious. She advised to go home and they will call us when he's ready. Good news nothing serious with his health from the test results. He just needed to take some meds to cure his diarrhea and vomiting. The next day our pup was back to his normal self. read more

Unfortunately just days after writing my previous review I was back here again. Thankfully the staff were just as awesome. I noticed my Tigger's behavior change and booked him an appointment with my regular vet but in the next 20hrs waiting for the appointment he seemed to get worse. Instead of being his Cheeky little self following me around the house he became quiet and wasn't as active. Then I tried to feed him and instead of eating started vomiting profusely. Immediately we were on the phone to tell VCA we're on our way. They Immediately took him in to do tests which showed Diabetic ketoacidosis and we had to leave him for a couple of days for testing and monitoring while they get his Glucose levels back to a reasonablelevel.. I cannot praise the staff here enough for calling us every 12hrs on shift change to let us know how he was doing and assuring us that he had improved. They even set us up with an examination room on the second evening just so that we could spend some time with him and seeing the huge change in his behavior from the day before put my mind at ease. I had a stray that had a bad abscess. I first took him on Presidents Day and was told he was stable and to let him back out. That strays always recover. By Sunday, Presley the stray cat (I named him) he was pretty bad so I took him back to the vet and still was told he is stable. I ended up taking responsibility for him so he can be treated. This was at 3 p.m. By 7p.m I was finally called into room to speak with the Vet whom is a very nice doctor who was honest with me and said the cat will prob not make it. If only they had seen him the first time or gave me options or even recommendation of another vet I can take him, Presley the 5 month kitten would still be here. When they brought him back to me in the room he was even more of a bad shape and 10 mins later he passed away on my lap right before 10pm. I will never go back here again. It left a really bad taste in my mouth and made me feel they don't care much for strays even though I was covering for his bill. read more

My dog ate a wasp that had been sprayed with bug spray and was immediately taken in for help. The vet was so calm and assured us our fur baby would be okay. He's less than 4 pounds and they treated him so well and helped him make a full recovery. Like many reviews start, I wish I could give this place 0 stars. They will leave your pet without treatment for more than 5 hours. We took our pet there at 11 and at 6 we called and said if our pet was okay, we wanted an update and they said he STILL hasn't received treatment. When I called and asked for an update they said "they took my dog on a walk" when he has injuries and bandages on ALL four paws, how is it possible he's "walking"? I understand it's a hospital and it gets busy, but they need to do better. It's ridiculous how bad this place is. They do not care about your animal. I didn't feel stressed when I got there because it's a hospital right, they're trained to take care of your animals UNTIL I read the bad reviews. This was the closest hospital in our area and they definitely take advantage of that. They charge you a ridiculous amount of money for TERRIBLE care and they have the worse attitude when dealing with grieving and scared parents of the pets. Very compassionate and caring people here. Our 17 year old cat, Maki, had gasped for breath and stopped breathing when we were giving her IV fluids prescribed by her regular vet. Sadly, Maki was gone upon arrival. But, the assistant who helped us was very compassionate and understanding. We made the quick decision to have her cremated on site. We picked up her urn and was saddened that we were unable to get a paw print from her like we had for her Brother, Nori, and her sister, Sugar, and her Mom, Mandeep (Ma). But, low and behold, I was pleasantly surprised to find a sympathetic card with Maki's pawprints inside. Thank you, VCA Antioch Angels. I recently had to put my cat down last Sunday. This was extremely unexpected as he was only 3. To say I was devastated and in shock, I can not say enough about the staff and the Dr. she explained in great detail what it would look like if I tried to save him from a bladder infection he had. It was expressed that if I did try and stabilized him it would come back. The compassion she had when explaining the his made my decision a little less painful! I felt as though she was honest and so upfront of his condition that trying to save him would be because I wanted more time with him. She left the room to give us time to decide and when we made the decision to put him to sleep one last time, she thanks me for making the best decision for Luca. My husband left the room but I decided to stay. I didn't think I could hold it together but I got time with him and when I was ready I clicked the blue button to let her know it was time. She came in and let me hold him while she sedated him. He relaxed in my arms but the most touching part of this was she help his little hand in hers and rubbed back and forth with each push of the liquid in the needle. I wasn't prepared there would be so many to finally make him pass but her gentleness called me and I believe Luca didn't feel a thing. She finally listened to his heart and said "he has passed" she left the room to let me hold him for awhile. I again pushed the blue button and she came in and said "im so sorry for your loss, but you did the right thing" while this experience will be with me for a lifetime, this place is a place of kindness and compassion and I'm honored I came here and had this experience be less painful!!! This is not a emergency for your pet. Take them to somewhere else. My 13 years old dog, A, suddenly collapsed after choking so I took him to the emergency. Before we went in to the emergency, A was feeling better but still I wanted him to get checked out. For some days he seems to be having cold too, stuffy nose feels like. Anyway, after an hour the vet called and she told me A can't breathe by his own and she said "if it's my dog I would have decided to euthanize him"! Now remember I went to the emergency with possibly a stuffy nose and choking (possibly by swallowing a large pill just before). This "suggestion" from vet I got after I told his age. I felt like the ground collapsed beneath my feet. I called them again and request to see A before deciding and the nurse said A can't breathe by his own. And they need to do bunch of tests, ECG, X ray etc.. The nurse sent me a link to pay $1000. Remember I am still in shock about what's going on. After waiting another hour I called and the nurse said as they need to do more test, she will send me additional pay link for ~$800! I requested to see A once more, and the nurse told me to wait in an exam room. After half an hour waiting and one phone call later, the vet came and told me the condition is very serious and he won't survive without oxygen. She told me I have two options (a) euthanize (b) take A home (which she doesn't recommend) and to keep in mind I may need to arrange oxygen etc.. She finally brought A so that I can see him. He seemed very groggy but was breathing fine (touchwood). I asked the vet that he seems to breathe fine and she said this just happened and she told me to take some time to decide while spending some time with A. After 20 mins, I decided to take A home and asked for the vet. I told her can it not be just cold, stuffy nose. And requested her for antibiotics, also requested if it's possible to open up the wind pipe, and she prescribed steroid. I knew A wont be able to drink water as he seems sedated so ask her if they can give subcutaneous fluid and she said ok. This is a vet in an emergency room where you took your child/best friend/pet! And I need to suggest every medication and vets suggestion is to euthanize just because A is old! Could she give the suggestion for a human?! What kind of world we live in where lives don't matter and even a "doctor" takes easy way out. Just because they can't talk or protest we can do whatever we want! I never thought I will write a bad review to a pet emergency place but here we are. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE. Oh and btw they charged me again for additional ~$200, so $2000 to hear that A should be euthanized. These people care for money more than lives! Boycott this place. read more

Had a crazy couple of days. Brutus has us scared for the worse. He had a terrible seizure that forced stones to his urethra. And then continued to have 2 more seizures until we got to the hospital. He had to get emergency surgery to remove the stones and close the rupture in his stomach and we are finally home. He is trying different meds to control his seizures. But we are so happy to be home and resting. 2 hours after we got home, our other dog Luke was bit by a bug and had an anaphylactic allergic reaction. He was shaking, itching, ears were bleeding, then fell to the ground, I had to get him into the car as fast as possible and never drove so fast in my life to get him to the emergency vet. By the time we got there he was covered in mounds of hives all over his body. The vet pumped him with steroids and Benadryl to get him better. I have never had such a rough couple of days and couldn't thank the Antioch emergency vet enough. They are such angels in saving my dogs lives and supporting me to keep me and my pregnant self ok. They treated my dogs as if they were there own and the communication was excellent and they were so patient with us. read more

If I could give ZERO stars I would. I found a severely injured or sick cat in front of my house Monday morning. Antioch Animal services was closed. I called the non emergency Antioch police dept (as instructed from animal services prompts) the rep that answered told me an officer would be dispatched and could transport the animal if still alive to VCA east bay emergency vet off sunset Dr. and that it was the facility animal services contracts with. I asked if I could just drop the cat off to that location myself which in response she said yes. I then called VCA east bay emergency vet at 9:12am to explain the situation - I spoke with a woman whose name I didn't get, I was clear there was a cat outside of my house that appeared very sick or injured and had blood dripping out of his mouth, and looked like he couldn't open 1 eye, he was suffering and I didn't know what to do. She told me if I brought the cat I would have to stay until the vet examined the cat and assume responsibility. I told her unfortunately I can't take responsibility for the cat but didn't want to just let the cat die, I couldn't just surrender the cat? She said no. I even asked why the Antioch PD would tell me this and she said she didn't know. Her response really didn't seem right to me so I had my sister in law call to confirm & she got the same exact info. The cat was skiddish and didn't want to be approached so this also made it difficult to get her into the carrier. I turned to next door for resources/info. I got feedback from several others in the community that said the cat should indeed be able to be surrendered at east bay VCA. One even called to help confirm the policy. I received a lot of mixed info and was also working during all of this. I decided to just try to get the poor cat in the carrier and drop her/she off anyway. By this time it was 3:30 pm I was able to get the cat in the carrier and when I approached the cat he/she could barely even move at this time. I am very passionate about animals and have never had such a nasty experience. I'm shocked with their handling of everything! When I arrive it was clear I was upset and the lady at the front desk proceeded to act like she had no idea who I was or that I called previously. Dr. pepping came out and was more worried about arguing & antagonizing me. I begged her 5 times to please take the cat back so they could see the condition. Finally someone came from the back to take the cat. Then after suggesting for us all to calm down and try to talk Dr. Pepping did not want to hear me out or understand about all the different info that had been given to others from their vet/staff and how that could be confusing especially for people dealing with traumatic pet emergencies. Dr. pepping told me Antioch PD shouldn't have told me it was okay to drop off the cat because they DO NOT contract with animal services. Then proceeded to tell us never to come back and actually physically shoved me out of the door. Either way now the cat is in their possession and maybe can be saved.. sadly I don't think he or she will make it. It's sad that there is such lack of information and resources for these situations when animal services is closed on sundays & mondays. Dr.pepping at East Bay VCA in Antioch off sunset clearly does not know how to de-escalate a challenging situation or have a passion for animals, just ego and it shows big time!! All 3 of my pets actually go to a different VCA and have for 2 yrs.. never 1 complaint. What a difference the staff can make to a business! read more

I had gotten a kitten from a rescue that really did not give me information. It was my first kitten so I have no idea what I was doing. My kitten had become weak and was very sick. I called on a Saturday at 7:15 they answered the phone right away. When I got in the the receptionist was very helpful and super empathetic. My kitten was seen right away. The vet came in she gave me a diagnosis within 20 minutes. They were very gentle with me since my kitten was very sick. My kitten was so sick we had to put her to down. The vet and receptionist was extremely empathetic with my kids and me. They gave us time and respected our feelings. We unfortunately had a horrible first time experience getting a kitten but this place helped with our loss. We are waiting for my kittens ashes but they gave us several options. If your animals are sick I would highly recommend coming straight here. Don't waste your time guessing with some vets. They are honest here and provide all opinions available. read more

They made her wait hours and hours and had the audacity to say that "she is very comfortable " needless to say this wasn't my 1st crap experience here.. other vet offices told me "don't take your pet there unless they are on the brink of death" it's very true! My dog had his whole face swollen and eye shut while they kept seeing other people in front of me! VCA This place reassured us and kept us calm through the whole process. We're visiting from out of town when my dog's wound got worse that he couldn't put weight on it. One of the techs came out to pick my boy up but my boy has extreme anxiety and refuses to get out of the car. My dog peed the moment we got him out of the car and sat on that pee as a protest for going ti the vet. They let me carry my dog inside to ease this process, but the tech carried him from me as they can't have me in the back per their current policy. My dog is about 45 lbs and so I appreciated the tech for carrying him inside to ease this process for my pup. The doctor assessed my dog right away and spoken with us to get more of the history of the wound. She gave us a plan of care and expected findings for when we bring our dog home. She also made sure that we understood everything that they will be doing for our dog. She answered all our concerns. They sent us a link through a text message and the link has options for Apple Pay which meant that I don't need to be reaching for my card and manually type my information. The staff is amazing, and our dog Sage's care was exceptional. We've taken several of our furry family members to VCA in Antioch, and our pets have always been met with love and compassion. We're grateful to have an emergency vet close to our home, especially with doctors and staff who so clearly love animals. I've seen people complaining about wait times and costs. This is confusing to me, as it's an emergency vet hospital. It works the same as when we go to the emergency room, prioritizing the most serious cases. As for the cost, it's emergency care. The doctors and staff work irregular hours so our pets can receive urgent care. Dr. Pepping and Dr. England are amazing! Dr. Pepping called and texted us to let us know how our puppy was doing. Dr. England sent us pictures and gave us updates over the phone and via text. We've never had a Veterinarian keep us this informed and show such love. I can't speak from the lens of a pet parent coming in for urgent care or run of the mill vaccines. I've worked in a veterinary hospital before and I have always valued bedside manners and sharing empathy with people just trying to help their furry family members. I can recognize when someone is just going through the motions because of the grind and it can sound robotic and cold, even unwarranted irritation. Yet when my heart broke coming home to my 14 year old cat having crossed the rainbow bridge. The staff here provided exactly the care we needed. Clear answers over the phone and they did not brush me off. Instead they were sincere. I pulled up in the middle of the night and they came outside. They were understanding when I said I just wasn't ready yet. When I finally came in the process wasn't just hey swipe your card and hand over the remains. They let me grieve and let go when I was ready. They even took the time to make paw prints. I didn't order an autopsy but they gave me some peace with some general observations. My little one came back promptly the next week and I found comfort in how she was returned. A sealed certificate and the urn was protected in some wrapping. All tucked in a blue bag like she was gift. In many ways she was just that to me and my family. I appreciate the ladies who helped, my apologies for not remembering names, but I just wanted to express how grateful I am for the help through one of the hardest moments I've ever had to go through. read more

I have taken my super unlucky lab here far too many times in her only 2 years of life. However, every single time has been a good experience. They don't try and BS you here, like many vets do. It's not about the money for them, it's about the overall health of your baby. The wait times are long, but that's because if a more critical pet walks in through that door, they are the priority (as it should be). We brought our sweetie girl to VCA after her regular vet was pack until Friday (it was Monday), for fear there was something lodged up in her nose. We though initially it was allergies, but after watching her for about a month with no improvement we decided to take her in. They recommended sedating her, and looking up in the nose cavity to make sure there was no foxtail or anything up there. We agreed and while she was under light anestesia they found concerning white patches of skin inside her nose which was extremely inflamed. They don't usually recommend extra nonsense tests here, but they were a bit concerned and recommended we do either a culture (which could take 8 weeks to come back) or a blood test (which was a bit more expensive but we would have results in 5-7 days). We opted for the blood test, and about a week later we found out our baby did have the fungal infection which can be lethal if not treated. This place is okay and adequate for your emergency needs. It's really the only place around so you don't really have a choice if you are in the Brentwood area. I had to bring my kitten here the other day for overnight care after he swallowed a steel scouring pad and had to have surgery. The vet's office did not have overnight care. The location is clean and well maintained. I would say though that the staff comes off as a little overworked and disorganized. The main thing I noticed about this location is how young all of the staff is. Perhaps it was because we were there during the night shift, but the doctor and staff all looked fresh out of college. The care for my kitty seemed okay and they were responsive to any concerns we had. This place is VERY expensive. Expect to pay two to three times what you would pay at the vet's office and expect to pay 125% of it up front. Yes that is how it works there. They refund the rest back to you if they don't use it. Our kitten only needed to spend one night there and did just fine. If we had to we would go back there again but it's not my first choice. read more

Friday night my Malinois and German shepherd got into a scuffle and my GSD bit my Malinois leg. Saturday morning I brought Ziva here to be seen for 2 wounds on her leg. I arrive at 07:33. Ziva was taken in immediately. Dr Vetter called at 0815 to talk about a treatment plan. ( had to wait in my car, Covid precautions) we decided on antibiotics and anti inflammatory. Wounds weren't that deep. I appreciated the staff and Dr for being so good with Ziva. She was discharged at 0840 with meds. Sunday she's doing fine and no issues at all today. We took our Yorke this morning. He was limping and we couldn't figure out nor see what was in his paw. Took him in and Sarah at front desk went above and beyond with her excellent customer service and assured us that all will be well, explained procedure and was very helpful and knowledgeable. She took our pup to the back to be examined by the doctor. Short while later we were called back into the room and doctor brought our dog in. He was no longer limping. She said it may have been a bee that stung him but he was fine. She did full exams of his paw and didn't see anything serious. At first I was not really sure of the diagnoses because he seemed in a lot of pain earlier and now he was all better. She said bee sting is like that. We got home and SURE ENOUGH WE FOUND A DEAD BEE IN THE DOG AREA WHERE HE WAS HANGING OUT AT. I couldn't believe it! Doc was right! Thank you ladies for excellent service, hope to not have to see you again but I will definitely recommend you. read more
