We Just had the best vet experience at VCA! Our geriatric dog is very nervous after recently suffering a dog attack. Once I made the staff aware of his anxiety's they went out of their way to accommodate him! They sent us home with anxiety meds for his next visit and even came out to the car to take his stitches out so he wouldn't have to go inside. The prices are far from cheap, but what bugs me most is the wait. I've been here several times, because my cat has some health problems that require frequent visits and each time I've had to wait at least 3 hours for something that could easily be done in an hour. If you bring your pet here, be prepared for a long wait. I strongly recommend bringing something (a book, a laptop, etc.) to occupy yourself for a couple of hours. The only nice thing I have to say is that the inside of the building is comforting, but that doesn't make up for the long wait. read more

Thank you again Valley Oak! This is the 3rd time they have saved the life of one of my fur babies. From my beloved Orange Cat they saved years ago that was hit and dragged by a car and lost almost 50% of his blood to my elderly cat getting mauled by a pitbull, to the latest incident over the weekend where one of my cats suffered a life threatening medical emergency. All 3 times I took my cats down there, I thought for sure they would never return home due to the severity of the injuries and illness. All 3 times Valley Oak and their amazing team of vet techs, vets, and surgeons have gone above and beyond to save a furry family member. People complaining about "sticker shock" during a medical emergency for their pet need to understand that Valley Oak provides almost the same level of care that you as human would receive at a hospital ER. (I'm a local paramedic) So it's not cheap, but it is hands down the best care available to your pet during a major emergency. Very disappointed in this place. I brought my 10 month old puppy into emergency because he broke his front leg. I assumed it was an emergency and could not wait till morning. Because of Covid-19 we had to call for the vet tech to come to the car to get my puppy. Very understandable. And they asked us to wait out in our car until he was done being seen. Well about 2.5 hours later I still had not heard anything or any updates. So I went up to the door to see if there was any word on him. To my surprise, they still had not seen my puppy yet! The gal was very short with me and in my opinion rude. How RUDE of them to not tell us to go home and they would call when he was finished. Updates on what's going on would have been nice. Finally 4.75 hours later, they said they were done working on him. They did x-rays and set his leg in a splint. They said they really couldn't get it that straight. Very over priced for the procedure they did since the didn't even set his leg straight! Not to mention it seemed like they were trying to talk me into other pricey items/products or procedures I wasn't even there for, WTH.... They are saying he probably needs to have surgery to put a plate and screws in his leg. This is a $3000 surgery on top of the already almost $800 I spent for a half a**ed job! Do they really think I want them to operate on my dog since the couldn't even do a simple procedure correctly, NO THANK YOU! Also wanted to mention that he gal that brought my dog back out to was NOT wearing a face mask, so much for not spreading Covid-19. Lucky I was wearing my face mask. I did talk to Caroline the next day and she was very understanding about all of my concerns. I also talk edto the doctor and he seemed pleasant enough. After reading all the other negative reviews, I really don't think I will be going back to them. I took my sweet dog to Valley Oaks for 5 months after they diagnosed her with diabetes...after 5 months and thousands of dollars my dog was worse than ever! Her glucose was over 500, they left it at that for 2 weeks suggesting I spay her, 2 weeks after at her checkup still above 500, she had a small infection near her surgical wound, I took her in they did not even give her a full exam...finally I took her to a local vet...in 1 day! Her glucose under 200, after 2 days even lower, she had beginning signs of pancreatitis, the food I bought from valley oaks was the wrong food! I ordered it on a monthly basis, she was losing weight yet they were giving her weight loss food, they had me giving her insulin 1x per day but she needed 2x per day, and on and on. The new vet said they NEVER recommend them it's all about making money! I will never use them again read more

Thank you to VCA for seeing my kitty when my regular vet couldn't get him in. I appreciated their letting me bring him in right away and the tech's kindness in cleaning him up when he got sick in his carrier. The techs and vet were kind and the vet called the next day to give me the lab results. He's back to normal now. All vet care is expensive but my buddy is worth it and he's been to the emergency vet before so I knew what to expect. I had to give 4 stars because I don't think the vet called in a medication and I haven't gotten a copy of the labs yet but it was a short holiday week so I'll check back with them this week read more

Absolutely horrible. Took my cat in to the emergency vet because she was very constipated. Just to walk in I had to pay $200 since it's an emergency. Ridiculous! Before the vet took the xray he said "you may need to put her down". He didn't even try to help!! After the X-ray he said we would either have to give her surgery or put her down. The surgery was going to be about $2,000!! He didn't want us to do the surgery because he said it would be a lifelong problem and she would need her colon removed to do the surgery. That she would continue to be constipated for the rest of her life and we're better off "putting her down". I absolutely love my cat and couldn't imagine doing that so I tried to find another vet to get a second opinion. My friend recommended to me Corning Veterinary Clinic. She knows the vet and said he could help. I took my cat in the next morning, told him what the vet told us and he laughed!!! He couldn't believe the vet recommended to put her down!! He said he would take the stool out and she will be fine. The best part is, it was only $80!!! My cat is no longer constipated and she didn't need her colon removed to do so. She has been thriving ever since and pooping!! Doesn't seem like it will be a lifelong problem at all. So glad I got a second opinion!! Do NOT go to Valley Oak. They do not care and they charge outrageous prices. A vet should care about the animals; it was very clear that the emergency vet did not. Believe all of these negative reviews and know that, if you go here, you will spend hours waiting to be seen, then you will be told that they are understaffed, followed by a ridiculously inflated bill at the end. This has been the case, almost every time I've had to take my pets here. I have learned , and no longer go here. Here is one example....Quoted $750-$1000 for a procedure, went to All About Pets got a quote for $340-$500 for the same procedure!! Had it done at All About Pets for $350! I have other examples just like this and all with the same common denominator....long wait, understaffed, crazy prices. The only reason I ever went here was because my favorite Vet, Dr. Dohner moved from his practice to this place. It's a shame because I love Dr. Dohner but he was very hard to get into there. She had tachycardia and low blood pressure and got her back to normal. After running tests, its very likely it was that she got into chocolate somehow. All I can say -if it wasn't for them, idk if she'd be here with us today. My wife and I took our puppy in for a torn paw pad and leg fracture. Long story short, someone stole our pup and we finally got her back. We were informed she was recovering from a fractured paw. Upon looking at her, we noticed one of her pads was torn and bleeding. Dr. Lauren Hulse was kind and informed us of affordable treatment options. The entire staff was friendly and welcoming. I like that they have a separate area for cats (it's cute)! We will likely bring our kitties here because they have been so good to us. So far so good! I was really surprised by the reviews here. Too many cooks in the kitchen? No one seemed to know what was going on. Five hours later and almost $1,000 and still no answers. Finally leaving the building and told to go back inside because they forgot to give my pet the medications/vaccinations (really?). Then I was told to start medication the next day and that it was an antibiotic. This after she supposedly received an antibiotic injection that lasts two weeks. The medication turned out to be an appetite stimulate, not an antibiotic. I'm wondering if they really did anything other than take my time and money? Hoping to never go back there again. I'd give negative stars if I could, I called Friday to see if I could get my sick gander in and asked if they see geese, they said yes and they had an available appointment but because I have to rely on others for transportation and couldn't get ahold of a ride I had to pass, the woman on the phone seemed compassionate when I told her my ganders information, he has possible zinc poisoning and she knew how dangerous that is for birds. She told me if I was able to come in their exotic vet would be in all weekend to see my goose. Saturday I managed to get a ride so I called, re-explained my ganders situation and information, and asked about cost and everything, I was told to come in anytime, that they're be waiting for my gander and I. Arrived and called from the parking lot as requested, I was told she had no idea what I was talking about, I had to give all of my information again and reexplain that my pet GOOSE has possible zinc poisoning, she put me on hold, came back and said they'd see my DOG, I told her he wasn't a dog, he's a gander, a male GOOSE. I hear a snide" ohhhh, we don't see geese." I told them that I asked and was told multiple times over the phone that they did, that I just drove a long way to get there because I was told that they would see him and that they were waiting to see him. She apologized and said it must have been a misunderstanding and that if I waited until 8pm when the exotic vet gets in they'd see him for an extra $200 charge! They don't care about your feather or fur family, money is what they care about, and making you drive a sick stressed animal and make it wait hours for treatment so that they can charge you the emergency fee is no big deal to them, they're happy to do it. Five stars for cold hard greed. 3 hour round trip drive for a sick bird with no treatment to make it worthwhile. read more

The staff is great and very helpful Everytime I come here for walk in there is at least a 1 hour wait. Which I understand if its busy but today there was 3 people in front of me and ive been waiting over one hour. Was told there are only 2 vets on staff currently. Its a friday at 930 am so I would imagine they could staff more drs. Unfortunately in Chico the only easy walk in clinic is here. The facility is very nice. Fyi I recently had a c section on my french bulldog in Sacramento because they charged $725 and VCA quoted me between 2375-2900... gives you an idea how they have a monopoly Another visit the day following this last one!! Brought in a 10 day old frenchie puppy that is congested and needs meds and i have sat here over one hour in lobby and they refuse to put the puppy in the incubator in back! I am loosing respect for this place! There was 1 guest in front of me when i arrived but since then 3 emergencies came in so unfortunately i sit! I am reducing my rating from 2 stars to 1 star after asking for a prescription for Revolution that I wanted to use at 1-800-Petmeds. VCA wants $149 for 6 months. Petmeds asks only $88. I called VCA and the receptionist told me that I would have to pick up the prescription in person. When I told her that I would pick it up in person, she said that my cat had not seen one of their vets since May 2018. Therefore, I would have to make an appointment for Lucky to get the prescription for Revolution. VCA is a monopoly operation! read more

This was the 1st time in about 2 years where I have had an emergency with one of my cats. The other 2 times I just showed up because that's what you should be able to do with an emergency that clinic. In fact, the only reason I even called this time was to make sure they still accept Care credit, since the pandemic, some places have changed and I didn't want to show up and not be able to be seen. As it turned out, I called on a night, and I'm sure on numerous nights they had absolutely no vet on site. Which I found out by calling numerous other events 2 hours away that it is illegal in California. You cannot legally be a 24 hour veterinary clinic with no vet on site at any point. Because of this failure of a place, I had to drive a 4 and a 1/2 hour round trip to Davis in the middle of the night, and getting home at 5:00 a.m. The place of Davis was magical and I would actually go there again then go to this piece of shit excuse for a veterinary clinic again, as long as my animal wasn't dying. They are absolutely atrocious and the vets at UC Davis filed a complaint on my behalf against this shit chico location. I hope they get put out of business! Horrible horrible horrible place! read more

I rescued a kitten from the side of the road and needed to take it to the vet to get checked out and probably get some antibiotics. Given the day this was my only option at the time, I called and the lady who answered the phone was incredibly rude. I knew that I would be responsible for all costs associated with the vet visit, but she insisted on saying it 4 times and not nicely, I understand they don't want people to abandon an animal and leave it for them to deal with but I made sure to let them know I had every intention of making this kitten a part of my family and getting it the help he needed. After them finally saying they would see him it was a 10 hour wait! So in that time I got him cleaned up fed him and ended up not needing to take him in right away and was able to wait for my vet to be open the following Monday. Thank god because after all the stories I heard I was dreading having to take an animal there and my brief interaction with the staff was enough for me. So if you find a kitten they probably won't help you so I hope everyone finds animals in need on a day that you can go to your normal vet, not this place. read more

I was traveling with my rabbit for a track weekend at Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, CA. I was about 3.5 hours aways from her normal vet. She developed GI Stasis during the night and when the critical care feedings were not working I brought her to VCA Valley Oak. The after-hours vet, Dr. Vinson, who was clearly knowledgable about lagomorphs, looked her over and gave her the usual medications for GI Stasis. I was very pleased with the price of the emergency services and the level of care my bunny received. However, when she had not improved in a few hours I was back at VCA Valley Oak. Over the next day and a half Dr. Dohner and his team evaluated and treated my bunny. Dr. Dohner gave me updates throughout the entire process and allowed me to visit with her a few times. Thanks to the prompt and comprehensive care she received my bunny is alive today. I am so incredibly grateful that VCA Valley Oak was there for me and my bunny. If you have a bunny I would highly recommend Dr. Dohner. The price of all the services my bunny received, including x-rays and hospitalization, were more than fair. Everyone I came into contact with at VCA Valley Oak was professional, caring, and competent. Additionally, during my time there it was evident that the other customers and patients were also very pleased with the level of service and care they received. read more

After having my dog there all day I picked him up and he had been laying in his own pee- probably for hours. His entire side was soaked with pee. He had not eaten all day and probably no water. When he got home he drank a ton of water. You did not have permission to medicate him so don't blame it on that. This whole COVID thing works out great for you. You take the animal where the owner can't see them and you don't have to deal with the questions. You are not held accountable because these animals cannot speak. My dog was in a cage for hours and because your Doctors are busy and they fail to return phone calls, animals are made to stay in a cage, in a pool of their own pee. When the owners call for an update the little twits answering the phones read your caller ID and already know who is calling yet they fail to have answers. You getting all this Jeanna, because I'm just getting started. EVERYONE SHOULD DO THEIR HOMEWORK. This is not the only game in town. Ask your regular vet who to go to. Google emergency vets in Chico. On Wednesday Jan 30th I took my cat Ember in for teeth cleaning. On Feb 2nd I brought home a severely cerebral damaged cat that was blind, could not stand or eat. I had to have him put to sleep. they did not call for updates on him while he was there I had to call them and ask, then I would get RUDE uncompassionate persons on the phone. I was in there at least 10 times and none even remembered my name. I took my 9 month old puppy in about two weeks ago because she found an old prescription bottle and ate about four muscle relaxers. The staff are cold and pompous. They think they are better than you. And that is just the front desk. I don't know how the vets are because I never see them at work because they don't allow anyone in the back with their pets. Honestly what have they got to hide? If that's the way they are I suggest they install TV cameras and monitors so ones pet can be viewed while they have them in the he back doing whatever. Lastly their prices are extremely expensive. At my vet the next day was a $50. At Valley Oak was $450. Talk about a ripoff.. Yet for emergency care they bleed you over a barrel. I still wonder what they have to hide when you're not allowed in back with your pet. read more

They charged 140 for check up and said We'll she either has something stuck or it's nausea. What! I know that already. That's why we brought her! Took our 20+ year old cat in on April 2, 2020 and had blood tests done. Left numerous messages requesting call back on the results of the test. 3 weeks and $600 later still no call back from the Vet who saw are cat. They do not care about your pet only taking your money. Go elsewhere if you can. Update: Got a phone call today from Valley Oaks and finally got the results from the blood work .(Thanks to the low review on yelp I am sure) The Dr we spoke with was very nice and fully explained the results. My girlfriend and I had a positive experience with the VCA Valley Oak Vet Center. Long story short. We were camping about 30 minutes away and our cute little dog swallowed a fish hook. They took us right away and explained the 2 possible outcomes of which we were lucky to end up with the better of the 2. They were successful in extracting the hook and we were on our way back to LA within a few hrs. Needless to say, we were very nervous. Thank you so much for your help. read more
