My three fur babies have previously been seen by Dr. Crowson, and we considered following him to the vet practice he moved to because he is a fantastic vet, but we decided to stay with Chico Animal Hospital as they have all relevant health records and we've only ever had positive experiences there at all touch points... and the support staff (front desk, vet techs, etc.) are just as important as the vet! This past week, I took my pup in for a follow-up appointment to an urgent care visit at VCA two weekends ago. Chico Animal Hospital had already received the records from our urgent care visit, and were ready to assess Roux's healing and provide guidance on continued care. This used to be a really wonderful Clinic for pets, but I can no longer recommend it. They've gotten extremely expensive to the point that you have to be pretty well off to afford them. After taking my boxer dogs there for years I've left them for good. I was getting the feeling that they're pushing expensive treatments that may not always be necessary. Spare yourself a trip and your pets life and don't come here. Very stingy establishment, they do not care about the well being of your pet their main concern is money. Our pup got really sick over the course of 2 days and she was seen by the male vet here. He said himself that she was very very sick but didn't really show any concern about her well being unless we had money, which we said we were struggling right now and i think that's what caused the attitude towards us. Vet here pointed out that she was sick and said she could stay for treatment over night and have some tests done (was saying all of this with no sense of urgency) or we could do outpatient treatment, which we decided we wanted to do. they charged us for tests and to have her seen (i think we were charged extra for not having an appointment) they took a parvo test and that came out negative so we took her home with the outpatient treatment and we're told to come get a refill of her iv fluids but no one made any recommendations as to what they would have wanted to test for or whatever. We took her home and all through the night she wasn't doing well and by morning got worst so we took her to the vca and they told us exactly what tests they wanted to do and recommended a number of things and later in the day pretty much told us that it was too late. Rewind to us bringing her to chico animal hospital she was still able to walk around a little and still had a small amount of energy. After going home her condition declined greatly. I really wish the Vet here had some compassion to tell us "hey she's doing really bad, i want to keep her overnight so we can take blood and x-rays to find out what's going on" but no all we got was "she's doing bad so we're gonna need to keep her overnight and it's going to be quite a bit of money" Please don't come here, if you care about your pet you really will avoid this place and try to call Everts animal hospital if you want your pet getting better. read more

CAH used to be such a great place to be back when Dr. Callen owned it. Now the vibe is "New middle school sub who has some rules and isn't going to take your malarkey." Have a senior pet on multiple prescriptions? They won't call them in or send them electronically. You have to drive out there to get the handwritten (read: 1980's style) prescription and take it to the pharmacy, then return to the pharmacy to pick it up when ready. Ask them about it and they'll talk over you. Live across town? Too bad. No exceptions (folds arms). Want an appointment? Give them a credit card number first and they'll pre-charge your card $75 for the visit. Dr. Dennis - the vibe is arrogance and condescension (I sense a theme here). Dr. Crowson - the vibe was terrific and his assistant was also terrific. He spent a lot of time with my dog and gave us very helpful advice. However, seeing him again is not worth the price of admission. Front office staff: a combination of sickeningly sweet and mind-numbingly obtuse. Again, the sing-songy middle school vibe. This-is-how-it-is without a shred of creativity or desire to help. Today I had driven across town to pick up the aforementioned Rx, but there was an error on it. Singsong lady seemed unmoved and unmotivated to help. Said Dr. Crowson wasn't in until tomorrow and I'd have to come back -- again. I asked if Dr. Dennis, who had also seen my dog, could perhaps write it. She said nope, he was not the prescribing doctor (note: she didn't ask anyone, and she knew I was inconvenienced already). I stood there, sighed, and said, "It feels like you don't even want to try and help, is that possible?" I got silence from the singsong woman. I asked for my dog's records. The new vet in town is the one by Trader Joe's, Chico Pet Vet. I walked in there today on my way home. They're taking patients. They call in prescriptions. They speak to you like you're an adult. An office visit is $65. I'm sure they're not perfect either, but so far, so good. read more

Our previous vet had recently retired, so we were nervous about bringing our beloved dog to a new Vet. However, Dr. Dennis treated Moses with the priority, humanity, and care of a long term client, like he had know this old soul for a long time. He put together a treatment plan to help him feel more comfortable as we face palliative care decisions and ultimately end of life decisions. We have been taking our dogs here for years since the previous doctors Prather and Callen sold to the current doctors. Everyone here is so kind, considerate, and earnestly trying to help out as much as possible. They do a great job of going over aftercare in any event. We have worked with them on everything from annual checkups, anxiety issues, tricky allergy issues, dental work, tumors, leg issues, and semi-urgent issues. Dr. Dennis, Dr. Kira, and Dr. Crowson have all helped our dogs at one point or another. Dr. Crowson ended up being our primary doctor. You really can't go wrong with any of them. They are all patient and really try to get to know our dogs. They are involved actively in the veterinary community and attend seminars to stay on top of things and research when they want to know more. They are also not afraid to tell you when there are needs beyond what they can provide and give great referrals while still being very professional when nudging you of who they would pick. The prices are all very reasonable and would gladly pay more for the great services they provide. If you want to go to a vet that treats your dog like it is their own dog they are caring for this is the place to go. We can not recommend them enough! read more

This Vet clinic is the worst we have ever experienced. Very expensive and difficult to deal with. The owner whose last name is Dennis has zero patient skills and is only in it for the money. He seems to be afraid of dogs and when we requested to only see Dr Crowson at our last appt he lied and said that they told us Crowson wasn't available on that date ( they never informed us of that) and said we had to pay anyway even though we said we'd re-schedule. $500 + We took our white boxer Ivan there when he stopped barking and was breathing rapidly and obviously in a lot of pain he could not swallow or eat his food the vet examined him and instead of checking out for the throat cancer which he had she put us on cough medicine and antibiotics money that we didn't have to spend we had to spend just in case when she knew otherwise. She was rude and never explained anything. Ivan passed away one week after. The meds that she prescribed seem to make him more sick. If we only waited one more day we could have spent our money on a vet that actually cared about the pet and not money. I will never take my animals there again and I will do everything I can to make sure everybody I know will never take their pets there. Ivan was like our child and we trusted them to care for him the same way but they did not he was only a dollar sign. Very disappointing I hope you will read this message and take your pets elsewhere. Our our 12 year-old pug was very sick and on the verge of death, so we took him in to CAH, he was not only diagnosed with diabetes, but also went into ketoacidosis. Dr Dennis was very kind and empathetic to us, he was also very informative and and instructive. He gave us the tools we needed to care for Oodie. Within a few days, Oodie was back on his feet. Also, their pricing was better than the other vet across town, they even gave us a breakdown and options before running our card. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. Our cat had worms and all we needed was some de-wormer and the vet blatantly lied to us forcing us to put our cat some bs hydrolyzed diet that did absolutely nothing. Then, like everything, businesses get sold, change of ownership, new vets, a misdiagnosis for one of our pets and refusing to send records for a second opinion hence the one star. It's taken me a long time to forgive. Everyone makes mistakes but to not help in seeking another opinion was disgraceful. Dr. Prather, (and Mallory and Denise) are the nicest and most caring people I have met in a long time. Dr. Prather REALLY cares about pets and their humans. She is knowledgeable, kind, and really listens. The doctor fit me in unexpectedly on a very busy day and really took the time to listen to my fears about my dog's health. The prices are reasonable, and this clinic specializes in pugs/flat-faced breeds, I believe. I have been going here for years, and I highly recommend them. On a side note, there is a new receptionist I am not too keen on. She didn't seem savvy about which issues may be more time-sensitive or asking me not to bring my dog with possible kennel cough through the front door, but maybe she'll catch on from all the other awesome staff . . . read more

Reader's Digest Version - This vet is so into making money that they put scheduling an unnecessary treatment ($550 dental cleaning) over the actual proper diagnosis of my cat. *Disclaimer* I have worked in wildlife rehab, and have several friends that are vets/vet techs that all found this to be off. This is my first experience with my non-regular vet at this office (ours left). Full Version: Last week, my very gregarious (and cowly cat - literally, she cleans everyone's food bowls) stopped eating, and would run from her food bowl - and us as soon as we started fixing their food. After not eating 3 meals (our cats eat 2x a day), I noticed that she was interested in licking a cat food can clean, so I tried bringing her some of the canned shreds with gravy. She picked at them until she hit a larger piece and then she jumped back in pain. We tried looking in her mouth and didn't see anything, but when we opened it too far she cried out in pain again, so we knew it wasn't environmental. Our Regular Vet (RV) wasn't available, but we had been going to CAH for several years and got her in that day. The vet was nice enough, and after some poking around declared that her teeth were in regression, and that a dental cleaning was needed. He stated that she had bad tartar and gingivitis, and she was missing some teeth, which all sounded very off to us (FYI... I have my degree in wildlife biology, and those gaps that were being pointed out are normal because of the way the carnassials cross in the mouth for shredding meat. They also pushed us to get bloodwork done... the advantage? They could send it to a lab, where they would "get more information" than if they did it in-house. They prescribed her Metacam and a pill to help encourage her to eat, scheduled us for the next earliest dental on June 6 (we were in on May 25), and sent us on our way. Today, I was able to get her into RV, who thought everything was very suspicious sounding, including the cost I was cited for a dental. Upon further inspection, she noticed that my cat's one eyeball was bulging slightly, and asked about her outdoor habits. I mentioned she joins me when I let our pup out to eat grass, and she knew what it was. The swelling in her mouth was consistent with what she had seen in other cats that ate grass and managed to get it lodged behind their molars, which leads to an abscess, and the swelling of the eyeball. As for the condition of her teeth? Some mild tartar, and the teeth I was told are missing are in fact, all there. RV was fortunately able to get her in today, and my cat is already starting to act more like herself. Other questions she had... why were no pain meds prescribed? Why were there pills to encourage appetite, when the cause of her not eating wasn't known? And most importantly, why was she on so much Metacam when it can cause damage to cats' kidneys? As an added fun-ness, after we had already been home for several hours on Saturday and medicated our cat, we received a call from CAH (and an email, see the attached photo) stating that there was an error in the amount of Metacam - in the error of too much - which, as mentioned earlier, can negatively impact a cat's kidneys. Fortunately, the tech was very on her game, and asked questions about the script she was given, and measured the doses out properly. Since RV could see her today, I attempted to get her bloodwork. When I called CAH, I was told that they needed a release from the Dr. and he wasn't in today, but they agreed to let me pick it up. So I drove from South of Chico to North Chico to get the bloodwork I paid for. When you look at the letterhead on it, it's for CAH, which suggests to me that they didn't send it out to a lab (Check photos to see how paperwork looks when it comes from a lab!). Additionally, in a review of the paperwork from CAH the vet cited stomatitis, which one of our cats has, so we are very familiar with (and he ALWAYS eats, even when in pain), and CAH had told us they didn't think it was part of her problem (he told us it was regression). My poor girl has been in pain for days, and eating a slurry of can food and water, and finaly has relief thanks to RV. The damage for a visit, anesthetization, antibiotics, and the surgery to get her abscess drained? Just over $250 - compared to the over $550 CAH wanted to charge me for a dental on a cat with good teeth. I would not recommend Chico Animal Hospital to anyone. It is entirely irresponsible to leave a cat in pain, and to place your financial gain over the well-being of the animals you treat. You should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves, and I hope that this review saves some people some grief, because I'm sure you're gouging your clients every. Damn. Day. read more

We recently lost our cat and were upset when we were told that we had to give a deposit for our new appointment for our very sick dog because we had not canceled within 24hrs. Well our cat left and died in that 24hr period. Yes, we called and canceled as soon as we knew he died. We have been bringing our pets here for many years and we knew all the staff and doctors. Many things have changed. It just did not feel good. I have to say that they did take our very sick dog on short notice and made her much more comfortable. We came up with a good plan to give her the best chance to do well. Which, bottom line is what you need from your vet. So I gave them 4 stars because of our dogs care, we are very thankful for their help. read more

The vet techs are great- always warm and welcoming. Been a client for two years. However, I'm done with this veterinary practice. Dr. Dennis is incredibly rude, condescending and disrespectful. The lack of communication between the front desk, the doctors, not leaving notes in the system, being talked down to is enough for me to move on. Not to mention, they thought one of my dogs had died and canceled his appointment when I brought him in for a scheduled appointment that I confirmed via text and email. Another time, they kept my other dog all day after an X-ray when I said I was home and could pick her up anytime. Another time, I asked for an anti inflammatory shot to be given to my dog who gets inflammation when given his shots. Dr. Dennis response was, "we will do what makes you happy". The last straw was waiting for a RX for one of my dogs which was suggested by Dr. Crowson (very nice) but never received a call back when I called back asking for the RX. Therefore, Dr. Dennis called me and lectured me on how giving a RX is not the best treatment. After his lecture, I said that I needed to move on to find care elsewhere due to the lack of communication. His response, "I think that would be best for everyone involved". Wow. I brought my 12 yr old German Shepherd in to see Dr. Dennis. First off; Dr Dennis never came in the room to meet her and do a check up. Instead, two young Vet Asst came in and carried her back legs off the ground by using a towel to lifting her back half up. She was down approx 15lbs. From there they took her to be placed where they put in the IV. Snap Snap Snap. 15 minutes before closing time I was called to get my dog. I was already sitting in the parking lot because I wanted to make sure I had time to talk to the vet so I just walked on in. First, I was told Dr. Dennis left for the day, he would call me tomorrow, simultaneously, Dr Dennis came walking out of the door that leads to the examining room's. I stopped him and told him I wanna know what the x-rays said and I want to see them now. He stuck them on the light board and told me she has a very severe arthritis, hip dysplasia and CANCER I think. I asked him what the radiologist had to say because I was told a radiologist would look at her x-rays and I was charged. Dr. Dennis looked puzzled and said, "we don't have a radiologist I'm the Dr who reads them". I had already paid her bill. I asked, then what is this part of the bill that reads radiologist $250.00. He told me I would have to take that up with the office manager who by the way left for the day. Then I asked him, cancer what cancer? He pointed on the x-ray with mhis finger and said I'm not exactly sure but I think this is cancer. I was completely scared and irritated! I asked about her blood test? He replied, "her blood panels are fine" Wthell! I told him you need to write a prescription for antibiotics pain relief and inflammation.....to my surprise he did. I took all her x-rays and walked out of the building!!!!! $780 poof gone, only one month of meds. When I asked why not three months, Dr. Dennis said, "he likes to see his patients every 1-3 months" Cha Ching! Natasha has an appointment with Dr Evers on the North/ East corner of HWY 32 and Forest. When I got my puppy this was the place I decided on taking her since the location was conveniently just down the road from me. I do not regret this decision one bit! This place is wonderful. Kitties come to greet you on your way in. The staff are all very friendly, professional and helpful! I buy my dog food here because they carry Taste of the Wild and other great healthy dog treats. The staff help me with the heavy bags of dog food to my car, even though I say I don't really need help. (I hate asking for help, I feel like a bother.) Denise has been great with my puppy and has answered every question I've had and I'm sure at some points I've asked some really dumb questions. I will be getting another puppy soon and will be returning again to get all of his vaccinations here. read more

I noticed a lump on my cats neck. My regular vet could not get him in. Chico animal hospital took him in. $140 for emergency visit. Dr wrote a prescription for Prednisolone in tablet form. I asked them to change it to a liquid form. I was told that Dr Crowson was not in and that the veterinarian that was working refused to change the prescription. They said we had to pick up a new prescription. My wife was in town( we live about 40 miles round trip. She went to the office.she was told that she would not get the new prescription until she turned in the original prescription. The medication wasn't even close to a narcotic. After my wife was crying they still would not give her the prescription. She came home and told me what happened. I immediately started my 40 mile trek to the veterinarian. I got the prescription and gave it to my local Riteaid. They filled the prescription. My cat had a biopsy of the lump but the results came back inconclusive. Dr Crowson informed me that they could do a more invasive biopsy and get cells from the middle of the lump. Don't know why they didn't do that in the first place. That would make the cost more than double the $500 plus already paid. My cat is a senior. It's always a concern when you have to put them to sleep for a procedure. I feel like I have been taken advantage of. Seems like they are more concerned about making money by doing 2 procedures instead of doing 1 procedure and only putting to sleep for 1 procedure. I will never go there again. Dr Crowson thinks that my cat might have lymphoma. Im sure that there is always a chance that a procedure will be inconclusive. They chose the procedure that has the best chance of being inconclusive. read more
