Cooper after surgery. Thanks Dr Lewis. You made my kids so happy

Dr Lewis is a life saver!! She goes above and beyond to make sure your pet gets the best care possible. Our little dog was in a dog fight where he needed a jaw wire put in. She not only did an amazing repair, she cleaned his teeth, did extractions and sent us home with herbs, probiotics and pain medicine. If I could give her more than 5 stars I would!

I wouldn't. Don't want to go into details, but I had my cat put to sleep because of this vets misdiagnosis and subsequent wrong treatment.

Less than a week later we realized that it was time. We called CCAH and set up an appointment. They got us in that day. We entered the room and there were some nice candles and music playing. The staff were all fantastic. Dr. Bettencourt took our girl back to get an IV in and to sedate her. He came back carrying her in his arms and gently laid her down on the table. She was in no pain. They gave us all the time we needed and then injected her. She went quietly and quickly. We were given all the time we needed after she was gone and then we left. We were given the options of what to do with her body and made our choice. So sad for us but she is not in pain now. (This time was in stark contrast to another time with another vet that didn't us sedation. Our dog ran around until she died. Not a pretty sight.) Thank you Chico Creek Animal Hospital and Dr. Bettencourt and his aids for your compassion.

It was 8:30am on a Tuesday ~ my dog was refusing food & water and appeared to be in pain. I was told that there were no available appointments & I should check the internet to find someone to see her today or tomorrow. I found a great new vet ~ my 10yo dog had pancreatitis! Thank heavens I didn't consider holding off another day. 5 years, thousands of dollars, and I'm told to look on the internet when my dog was in crisis. This is NOT okay

One morning he ran off and I found him scavenging a carcass and before I could get to him, sure enough he got bone stuck in his throat. Fortunately it was not effecting his breathing, but he could not swallow and was clearly in great distress. I got him back home, called my Vet. They had no DR on staff until the afternoon. I then called every other Vet in my area, and they could either not see me because of being over capacity for appointments, or there was no Vet on Staff at the time. I loaded Max in the Truck, called ahead and told them we were coming. It was a long drive, 40 minutes with a dog in distress. When we arrived they got us in right away. Even though Max is a big , strong, and difficult dog, the veterinarian and staff were able to get the bone out of his throat with no sedation, no major procedure. They did not do anything extra, did not require an ultra sound of an X-Ray, and after all was said and done, it probably only cost me a little more than my regular Vet would have charged, and that was for an Emergency appointment. I know people will complain about the cost of VCA, but this is a 24 hour emergency service, and I for one am glad the community at least has this option given that extreme Vet shortage, and IMO anyone that takes on the responsibility of caring for an animal should be ready for things like this to come up. Great Experience, Thank You for helping my boy!

When I called, I spoke to Jeannie (forgive me if I misspelled) who has the utmost pleasant phone etiquette and compassion. It was going to take 50 minutes to get to Chico, but Jeannie was able to get us an appointment by the time we arrived, which was immediately. As we arrived, our pet was napping and comfortable. We were checked in by Alina, who understood what was going on from the detailed notes left by Jeannie, and offered to come out to the car when our appointment time was ready (only about 15 minutes) to keep our pet comfortable. Once inside, our pet was breathing rapidly. Another Veterinarian (I presume, I didn't catch her name) stopped in their tracks as they were passing by and asked if we were there for emergency services due to the heavy panting, and had a look of concern. I appreciate she stopped to ask, fortunately at that time we were not. When it came time to our appointment, Jewel took our pet's vitals and showed great compassion. Dr.Sierra made her recommendation ever so gently, to which my mother and I understood and agreed. When it was time to say "see you later" to my mother's best friend, we were able to be in the room and share her last moments. Pets are not just 4-legged friends, they are family and the only family to some. The care, compassion, kindness, concern and professionalism were by far the best we have ever received. I have been to a different VCA location 15 years ago and cannot say the same as the VCA Valley Oak location. We will absolutely bring every pet we have in the future for any emergent needs. 10/10 Thank you all, sincerely, for everything

I am just so, so in love with Dr. Prather (as a vet!). She is seriously the most wonderful vet I've…read moreever worked with. I am also absolutely in love with Chico Animal Hospital (see my separate review for the whole practice). I moved here two years ago from Indiana and had left a very good practice back there and was anxious about finding care for my pack (5 dogs when I moved -- 3 now; natural selection NOT poor care!). I went somewhere else for about 6-7 months and then someone recommended Chico Animal Hospital and I haven't looked back since! My dogs are all special needs dogs so we "get to" go to the vet often so my review is based on pretty extensive knowledge over the past year and a half. Every single person at Chico Animal Hospital is a gem. I personally love, love. love Dr. Prather . She quickly learned my and my pack of dogs' names. If I'm in the clinic with a different dog she always asks about the others (especially if a different one has been in recently). She is so kind and gentle with my quirky babies, and I have seriously not a single complaint about any interaction with her. Dr. Prather definitely goes over and above the care I've experienced in the past. Dr. Prather has called us in the evenings or on the weekends to report on a lab test we've been waiting on or if I leave a message that I have a question about something. She is not a 9-5 vet and I so, so appreciate that. She is also super detailed and willing to take the time I need to get the best picture of what is going on. I have never felt rushed or that she doesn't care about one of my dogs. She also does exactly what she says she will do -- if she says I'll call you ASAP with the lab results I know she will. I've never been left waiting and wondering what's going on because she does go over and above to make sure I'm on the same page with whatever is going on. Dr. Prather is so compassionate and thoughtful about our animals. We had a dog with a very weird skin condition that we couldn't figure out what was going on. Every time we saw her (5 times in 2 and a half weeks!) she had the most worried look on her face and I could tell she really wanted to do every thing she could think of to solve his medical mystery. Again she goes over and beyond and researched every possible thing she could think of to make sure she was giving the best care possible. Other vets might have just randomly tried different medications and/or just thrown up their hands but Dr. Prather wanted to make sure that our boy got the best possible treatment AND didn't cost us an arm and a leg just randomly trying things. After a year and a half of seeing Dr. Prather I can 100% say I will never recommend a different vet (other than her practice partner Dr. Callen who is also awesome). I completely trust her opinion and know that our dogs are getting the BEST care possible in Chico (if not the world).

She is so knowledgeable and regularly educates herself on new veterinary medical practices. Some vets just do what they have always done, but Dr. Prather strives to be at the top of her game. I appreciate that! She has gone above and beyond for us at the Cat Coalition. She isn't afraid to work with feral cats and she handles them like a pro. She has been treating one of our kittens (who is now a cat) for the last 7-8 months. He doesn't have the last couple vertebrae, which makes it impossible for him to eliminate waste on his own (or at least with control). His condition is called "rumpy tail". He gets weekly treatment including bladder eliminations, acupuncture, massage and medicine. The cat is always in good spirits to see Dr. Prather and he will probably need care the rest of his life. He is one of our special needs kitties and Dr. Prather quickly found solutions for his unique situation without suggesting euthanizing. (We are a no-kill shelter anyways and unless the animal will suffer greatly, we opt for treatment and Dr. Prather understands and respects that philosophy).
