    Poppy and her brother Koa

We recently found out that our cat, Poppy, needed I131 treatment for her thyroid. We researched vets in the area (Lincoln, CA) that provide the service. The options were going to the Bay area or Chico. We spoke to each of the practices and found each to be possible choices. However, Chico Hospital for Cats and their representative, Samet, demonstrated deep caring for cats and great knowledge of the procedure. We chose Chico Hospital for Cats for Poppy's procedure and am very pleased with our choice and the results. When we arrived at the hospital we found a very clean and neat building. The waiting room was quiet and peaceful and the intake personnel were warm and welcoming. We met Samet and the doctor and were impressed with their caring attitude and concern for Poppy's outcome. We had good rapport with Samet and the doctor and implicitly knew we could trust them and that they would give Poppy the care she needed for her thyroid disease. We felt that we had made the best choice for Poppy (and for our peace of mind) by choosing Chico. When we left Poppy for her 5 days we were sure that she would receive the best possible care. The hospital has cameras in each double-size cage so you can observe your cat anytime you want and, in addition, you can talk to her and hear her. This is a great relief when you have to leave your cat for 5 days! We picked up Poppy on Friday afternoon and Samet gave us thorough instructions on her follow-up care (he also did so when we first made the appointment and when we dropped her off) and then brought Poppy out to our car. We were so happy to see her, as was her brother when we arrived home. The follow-up vet visit showed that the procedure had worked perfectly and her thyroid level was exactly in the correct range. The overall experience with Chico Hospital for Cats was excellent! Samet and the staff there are caring, professional people who gave our cats, and us, the best possible care. We are very pleased with the hospital and our experience with them. We strongly recommend Chico Hospital for Cats for your cat's health.

This review is a couple months overdue, it's strictly reviewing the I-131 treatment for hyperthyroidism. I live in the Sacramento area but unfortunately the closest places that offer this treatment are in Oakland and Chico. I chose Chico for a variety of different reasons including great communication. 90% of that communication was with Samet, the I-131 coordinator. All my questions were always answered and I felt kept in the loop on what was going on. I took my cat, Shelly, in on Monday so they could get the his most recent thyroid levels, they gave him his medication on Tuesday and based on his radiation levels I was able to pick him up Friday. The whole week I was an anxious mess knowing that my sweet boy was going to be away from me, however they provided a link to where I could watch him 24/7, I could even talk to him! This made me feel 1000X better. I could see on the camera that they would come to clean the litter, give him fresh water, give him fresh food twice a day. They even provided a little cat bed to make him feel comfortable. I hate being away from him for those 4 days but I would 100% do it again. Recently we went to recheck his thyroid levels and they are within a normal range. There will be no need to give him medication twice a day for the rest of his life. He is cured. He's finally gaining weight and is as happy as can be.

If I could give 10000 stars to Dr. Vekman, I would. Thank you for your kind heart and gentle hand, your knowledge and helpfulness. There is NO vet in the world like her. You will be impressed regardless of the reason of the visit. here I felt safe to express my concerns and knew that I was not judged for any questions I had. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support with my old boy.

During his annual check-up at W. Main Animal Hospital in early September, Simon weighed about two pounds less than normal (approximately 20% of his bodyweight). Over the past year I had noticed that Simon appeared thin and had been feeding him extra food. He was also very energetic at times, which I just chalked up to him feeling happy and playful. Bloodwork revealed that Simon had hyperthyroidism, which is apparently very common in cats. Normal thyroid levels in cats are between 1 and 2. Simon's level was 7.8. I began doing research which indicated that hyperthyroidism is referred to as a "wasting disease." Left untreated, the cat will die. It also affects their kidneys and heart. He was started on a trial of medication, but Simon did not tolerate it well. After two weeks he began exhibiting side effects, and was taken off the medication. The only other option was Radioiodine Therapy. When I first read about it, it sounded super scary. However, we had no other option. I talked to the two closest clinics that offer this treatment: A clinic in Eugene and Chico Hospital for Cats in CA. Samet, the treatment coordinator at Chico Hospital for Cats, promptly answered my numerous questions and concerns via emails and phone calls. Their website also offered lots of information on the clinic and the procedure. On November 5th, Simon and I made the 3-1/2 hour drive to Chico and spent the night in a local hotel. The next morning, I brought him in to Chico Hospital for Cats, where he would spend the next 4 days. The vet, Dr. Kleiman, gathered his history and conducted an exam. His thyroid was re-checked. When results came back the next day, it had gone up to 8.5. Simon had his treatment the next morning and was placed in a kennel in a special room where several other cats were also being treated (each in their own individual kennel). I was sent a link for an app that allowed me to check in on him, which was both sad and comforting at the same time. Simon was a little champ and took it all in stride. By the third day he was sleeping stretched out on his back like he does when he's at home. He's now been home one month and had his first thyroid re-check this week. I was so happy to hear Dr. Tegarden state that his levels have dropped to 1.5! Since he's been home, I have also noticed that Simon has put on weight and, almost immediately, seemed calmer. Although expensive, if your cat needs treatment for hyperthyroidism, I highly recommend this treatment and Chico Hospital for Cats.

My cat needed to be seen and POOF! there we were. Even during these craziest of times - in and out! Masks, gloves, pick-up and drop-off. The hard part is not being able to stay with my very senior kitty - 21 years old. But believe she has the best of care. Thank you Dr. Waller and staff. I was a regular at River City Cat Vet in Sacramento for many years. Thankful to have found a replacement. My four-footed friend is happy!

Less than a week later we realized that it was time. We called CCAH and set up an appointment. They got us in that day. We entered the room and there were some nice candles and music playing. The staff were all fantastic. Dr. Bettencourt took our girl back to get an IV in and to sedate her. He came back carrying her in his arms and gently laid her down on the table. She was in no pain. They gave us all the time we needed and then injected her. She went quietly and quickly. We were given all the time we needed after she was gone and then we left. We were given the options of what to do with her body and made our choice. So sad for us but she is not in pain now. (This time was in stark contrast to another time with another vet that didn't us sedation. Our dog ran around until she died. Not a pretty sight.) Thank you Chico Creek Animal Hospital and Dr. Bettencourt and his aids for your compassion.
