Monday night I had a big scare after finding my dog unresponsive in my backyard. I picked him up and rushed him to the hospital where the doctor had found blood around his heart. Dr. D'Addario had a sweet, calm and gentle demeanor and explained everything in detail. As a veterinary technician, I knew what I should have done next which was to have her drain the blood around his heart. It was also recommended to come back the next day to see the cardiologist Dr. Goodwin who is also an amazing and very caring human. After an echocardiogram it was confirmed that Trey has Hemangiosarcoma and a tumor growing in his right atrium. Trey is currently still with me and per Dr. Goodwins recommendation, I am taking hundreds of pictures every day and taking Trey with me everywhere I go and he is also getting food handouts anytime I eat something and still taking him for short sweet walks where I talk to him the whole time. I wanted to thank everyone, Mollee, for your kindness, the receptionist team, the nurse who triaged him and Dr. D'Addario and Dr. Goodwin. You guys and the medical team are amazing!

Pru was seen quickly and we were out in no time (which for any emergency facility is a rare occurrence). Could not be happier with her treatment and the kindness and professionalism of the entire staff.

Our 7 year old german shepherd, Marilyn, got into a dog fight on Saturday afternoon and sustained a laceration under her eye and puncture wounds in her left ear which needed medical attention. Having never been to VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in Norwalk, having only just moved to the area from CA, I wasn't sure what to expect, but we had the most positive experience for such an unfortunate situation. We were seen and evaluated immediately by a vet tech and then by Dr. D'Addario. Everyone was incredibly kind, reassuring, and gentle with Marilyn. Treatment options were clearly explained and all of my questions thoughtfully answered. The following day we received a text asking about Marilyn to be sure she was recovering well. Having worked with dogs for many years on the west coast, I have spent my fair share of time in vets offices and in any instance a veterinary team that advocates for you and your dog is essential, but even more so when it is your personal dog. Thank you, Dr. D'Addario and the entire team at VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center. You truly made all the difference.

Finley out of VCA for the first day

We took Finley, our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to VCA at midnight with a serious heart condition. The staff worked quickly and attentively to help him. Dr. Lutchen was so nice . He just wonderd about the fluid around Finley heart ( torn pericardium). He told me that Finley is a happy dog and they would try to save him. They found solutions that improved his health. He stayed in the oxygen cage for 3 days. Doctors Lutchen, Selgado and Phalin were very professional and caring. Dr. Goodwin, rhe cardiologist developed the best plan for Finley. As well as the nurses and orderlies. The hospital phoned us every morning and afternoon to update us on Finley's condition. When we visited him, all the staff were very helpful and caring. Finley is at the end of his mitral valve disease with torn pericardium. To have him back home for another hug and love at home means a lot to us. I am grateful that VCA could save his life. VCA really cares about the animals as well as the owners. Thank you so much for taking care of my Finley.

    Amazing Surgeon saved his life

Absolutely an amazing staff, caring above & beyond. The surgeon on call phenomenal. Easter Sunday, my best friend's 1yr puppy went there for emergency life saving surgery. The team are so wonderful, caring, kind and made a tramatic situation more calming. The communication, follow up calls to check on him are FIRST CLASS.We can't thank them enough. HIGHLY RECOMMEND A++++ Thank you Norwalk team, Sherri

Both times we saw Dr. Morgan. He spent a lot of time explaining everything to us and making sure all of our questions were answered. He was very good with Rudy, who is by nature an anxious dog. Warning, long post…read more Do not take your pet here unless you want them to die. My poor sweet cat, Artemis, died in agony less than 24 hours after a procedure at Cornell University Veterinary Specialists. She was hospitalized multiple times for evaluation of weight loss and GI disease. On June 16, she underwent endoscopy with biopsies and a liver FNA with Dr. Forman. I was told the procedure was uncomplicated and that she was stable and good to go home. This was strike 1, they discharged her too soon. After discharge, she was clearly not okay. On the drive home, I noticed intermittent wheezing. Once home, she became progressively lethargic, hid from us, vomited, had worsening abdominal distension, and appeared to be struggling to breathe. I called the hospital because I was concerned about her respiratory status. I was told these signs could be related to anesthesia and her anti-nausea meds wearing off and that I should monitor her. As a physician, I knew better. I ignored that advice and brought her back to the ER, which I ultimately regret. In the ER, I met Dr. Zenobya Clarke, who was taking "care" of Artemis. She confirmed that she was in respiratory distress and gave her butorphanol (FYI, pet owners cannot observe the treatments, pets are taken to a back room while we are made to wait in a separate room for updates). She disclosed that she accidentally gave "double" the dose, and when I asked her for the exact amount, she said she gave 1 mg/kg of body weight, when the typical dose is 0.2 mg/kg. So she overdosed her by 5 times, not double like she said. When I mentioned that, she acted flippantly like it was no big deal. Strike 2. When I received her medical records after her death, turns out she had actually given 2 mg/kg, so she gave 10 times the amount in an already sick cat. A medication error of that magnitude should never happen. She told me Artemis would be admitted to the ICU and said she looked stable so I could go home. I asked to visit her before I left and noticed that she was open-mouthed breathing and in terrible condition. She was bradycardic and hypotensive on the monitor, none of which was mentioned to me. Strike 3. The vet swore she looked ok just before, which I find hard to believe. I had to point out how unstable she looked. Throughout the visit, Dr. Clarke was callous, brushed off her errors, and seemed like she did not know what she was doing. I found out after the fact that she was a resident with seemingly no oversight. Despite treatment, Artemis' condition rapidly deteriorated. She developed severe respiratory distress, began vomiting blood, and we made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize her to end her suffering. She was the sweetest, gentlest, most affectionate cat, and to see her die in such a horrific way was devastating. I understand that not every patient can be saved. What I cannot understand is how a patient who was reportedly stable enough for discharge could deteriorate so dramatically within hours, why my concerns about her breathing after discharge were dismissed initially, and how a 10-fold medication overdose occurred during her care. Instead of celebrating my upcoming wedding in a few days, I was forced to say goodbye to the sweetest cat I have ever known. I am left with profound grief, unanswered questions, and a complete loss of trust in a hospital I believed would provide the highest level of care. On top of that, I spent almost $15K at Cornell only for them to ultimately cause her death at their neglect. Artemis trusted me and willingly went into her carrier. I had to return home with an empty carrier and a broken heart.

She gave us a ton of information, told us where she would be the next day with phone number of the other store so we could reach out to her with any additional questions. She actually just texted me with pictures of the parents of the goldendoodle we purchased (it's after 7pm). I did call the store one day when Allison was out and Pete answered the phone, he wanted to know how the dog was doing, said he has been with the store for decades and if we need anything to just call him. GREAT STAFF. We were talking to some breeders directly and the communication was horrible. Gary has some great employees. Even the woman who bathed and did our dog's claws after purchase clearly LOVED dogs. Very positive store experience. The Neutral: My dog, as others have mentioned was timid and easily startled when first home, but I think that's normal. He's only 10 weeks old, arrived from Missouri only a week before. That's a lot of changes for a little guy. So we have been making sure to keep the house a little quieter and trying to not make noise when he is eating. Basically like the instructions from Gary (Owner) say, no playing or excitement for 3 days. It's day 3 now and the dog (Reilly) is really much more active, running around the house, eating better, and seems to be adapting well to us and the house. The unexpected: Day 3, the little guy seems to have developed a cough. Could be from the stress of the move, he didn't seem to have this when we brought him home. I spoke to Allison about this and was told we would be reimbursed if we were unable to get back up to CT to see their Vet. (We are an hour away). Update: He seems a little better today, he has his check-in/check-up anyway so we just moved up the date at the vet to make sure he's on the right track. I am sure he will be fine. The less positive: When we originally called on the phone, we were told one general price from the Owner for the dogs were were interested in. At checkout the dog price increased more than 50%. We were able to negotiate, but we felt it could have been handled better. The only reason we feel we didn't overpay is because the service and aftercare have been wonderful. And when you get a 10-11 week old baby, believe me you will have questions. This is my third dog, but I quickly realized pups this young are infants, more vulnerable, do more dumb things, eating well and not getting sick is really important.

What are you doing?!" He kept the fish alive and gasping for air in his hand for at least a minute or so before squishing and disposing of him while I begged him to please sell us the fish so we could give him a fighting chance at life and said "we have a tank at home and everything, PLEASE" and when he killed the fish in front of me and I started to cry, as I am sensitive, I threw down at least $60 worth of things I was buying for our cat and walked out. It was *sadistic* -- he knew we wanted the fish and he seemed to enjoy killing the fish in front of me. After we left the store, my husband went back in, looking for a manager who was not present. Someone at the register said "Oh, man, that's the first complaint we got about him this month, but he was being nice to the kids over there." (Is that a good thing? That's for you to decide, since he seems to take joy in killing living animals -- and yes, even small fish are living animals) in front of people begging him not to). Further, my husband was told there have been many complaints about Jerry, but "that is just how he is and you have to deal with it." The thing is, no, we don't. The store lost a large sale when I walked out and bought the same items at a different store that was *not* PetCo -- but furthermore, Jerry is not an annoying family member at Thanksgiving who I have to deal with -- he is an employee at a store that I, and my husband, can choose to not return to -- as well as any friends of ours who I told the story to, who were horrified by what happened, as everyone knows I love all animals and I treat our fish as well as I treat our cat, as well as I treat birds I say hello to when I am walking somewhere. It seems like Jerry, the employees, and the management, are all problems, but hey, "just deal" with watching someone suffocate, squish, and dispose of a fish you asked to purchase and tell me that is not somehow sadistic and wrong? I will never return to this store, and I will tell anyone I know to go anywhere else.

However, my initial experience arriving on the first day is the part I wanted to address in my review. Yes, the surgery is expensive. However, one particular individual needed business etiquette classes. No compassion at all and sticks a statement with two prices. A high and low estimate and proceeds to tell me if I want to look elsewhere, it's my option. You would think when someone provides you with a $6K bill, a bit of compassion is shown, especially if you don't know someone's financial background. How about explaining options? How about explaining what I'm about to pay $6,800 for? I stressed about my puppy breaking his foot, and someone who treats you like a dollar is not cool. Again, my experience with the rest of the staff was excellent. The medical team and the medical techs are fantastic. The girls at the front desk are patient and helpful.
