I would like to first say that VEG has a great staff and set of doctors. They were all so kind and showed genuine care and concern. My dwarf hamster was showing some pretty scary symptoms (very still and breathing fast and hard). Knowing how fragile hamsters are, I took her in. They did an exam on her which entailed checking her pulse and examining her breathing (no longer than a few minutes). I was charged 189 dollars for simply this and was not told the price beforehand. Although I should've asked, I think it is totally unreasonable to charge nearly 200 dollars for a two minute exam on a dwarf hamster that once again entailed nothing more than checking her pulse and examining her breathing pattern, which anyone can see was abnormal. To do further X-rays to diagnose the problem would have cost another 400 dollars which I simply could not afford. The exam also left me with no answers and the issue was not diagnosed. I do want to say that Dr. Watson was incredible and caring throughout the process. She ultimately provided me with a treatment for my hamster which has helped her recover. She checked in following the visit and was just overall very supportive and kind. I give her and the other vets that I interacted with a 5/5. However, once again, I think the price was totally unreasonable and should have been disclosed before my hamster was rushed back. UPDATE: My hamster Hazel started to look weak again and I was directed by a doctor at VEG over the phone to start another course of the Enrofloxacin since it helped her the first time. She died within two days (three days ago). As I was cleaning up her things, I noticed that the medicine that is labeled to expire on November 29, 2022 has mold growth in it. It is now clear to me that the medicine was bad when I had given it to her and is an explanation for her rapid death after giving it to her. I am beyond livid. I need this situation to be remedied in some way ASAP. read more

Terrible experience today. In with a friend and her sick old man dog. People were nice, very friendly. The communication was inexcusably bad. Dog was very obviously sick sick and they let her waste 5 hours of one of the last days she probably has with him sitting in a tiny room while they did nothing. Totally unprofessional. Refusal to speculate at all about specifics without tests led to an inexcusable breakdown in communication about the bigger picture. Didn't even mention explicitly that we were talking about putting him down until we started talking about taking him home. Not a good job today. read more

Wow! This place is amazing. Most friendly staff and truly looked out for my baby. My dog was acting lethargic and legs shaking and they took us in immediately. I was able to go back with Skully and be with him the entire time. He was so relaxed and the staff was so caring and sweet. The doctor was very kind as well. I specifically want to shoutout the nurse Erin! She was so so kind and explained everything throughout the process and broke prices down for us and just overall made the experience great. Grateful is a small word when trying to describe what you feel for the people who literally save your baby's life. That is what the doctors, technicians and staff at VEG did for my cat Allie. I have never been to a veterinary emergency care clinic before, but I am completely certain that this team is THE BEST anywhere. When I brought my girl in last week, her breathing rate was over 60 a minute, she was lethargic, and barely eating. Within minutes of being admitted, Allie had two technicians and a doctor attending to her, giving her oxygen, doing a full sonogram, which was quickly followed by radiography. Long story short, my cat was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, and if I hadn't brought her in to receive their expert care, she likely would have stopped breathing in just a few more days. They kept her overnight to make sure her recovery was stable, and I was able to take her home the next day. My partner also brought his cat to VEG for different critical concerns, and they provided the same thorough, expert, wonderful care to him and his cat as they did with me and mine. Every additional day of life that our cats have had with us has been thanks to the incredible team at VEG - like a team of angels. There are so many wonderful people who helped us and our cats - Dr. Germain, Dr. Burchfiel, Dr. Jones, the technicians, Jeni, Ottie, Candace, Ana, Alexis, the desk staff Bronte, Amanda...I'm embarrassed to have missed the names of others, but really, everyone is fantastic. The medical care is excellent, and the compassion and concern for pet parents is just as sincere and thorough. The patience with which they addressed (and continue to address) my endless frantic phone calls, even on Christmas eve AND day, is just beyond words. Not going to lie - if your pet isn't insured, expect to pay a lot. It will be worth every penny, and much, much more than that. read more

I can't say enough good things about this practice. My dog was acting strange so I called to see what the wait times were. I was sent a pre-registration form that I could fill out prior to my arrival to help cut down on the wait time once I got there. When I walked in I was pleasantly surprised to see that the space was bright, airy, and festively decorated. The comfortable couches, as well as the food and beverage stations really helped ease my anxiety and just made me feel more comfortable in a rough situation. Within about 10 minutes two vet techs greeted my dog and me and took her vitals, allowing me to be present during that time. They were so kind to both of us. We were then sent back out to the waiting room and waited for about 45 minutes to speak to the doctor, who was as kind and sweet as could be. She got on the floor with my dog to examine her. She took her time explaining what she was doing and what she was charging me for, and I could tell that she truly cared about my experience and my dog's health. Fortunately my dog is fine and we were able to go home that evening with some pain medication. Overall these guys do an incredible job in a really hard profession and I commend them for their kindness and patience. Highly recommend and definitely worth the money. read more

I've been twice in the last 5 or so months. Once to accompany a friend whose cat they diagnosed with lymphoma (and who declined very fast/was euthanized there a couple of days later). The second time was with my own dog who ate something he shouldn't have. The doc who was there the first time was there when I returned, and I was so glad because she was terrific. They were so wonderful and I witnessed a tech who was on break get into one of the large kennels with a dog who had had surgery and whose owner couldn't come visit him that night. She took a nap right there with the pupper. Really solid team of folks. Hope never to have to return, but boy am I glad they're there if I must. read more

We were in a jam and our cat Nero was very sick. Nero had lived with diabetes for several years. He lost so much weight that he was literally skin and bones. He lost a lot of his fur and was hyperactive, especially when food was around. On the Sunday of the MLK weekend Nero took an extreme turn for the worse. I noticed that he seemed a little bit more feeble in the afternoon. He ate dinner. We were watching TV and he was sitting on my lap. Suddenly, he jumped away from me and landed on the floor with his limbs disrupted. He had seizures through the evening and the night. We took turns watching him through the night. He was still breathing and we decided to try to go somewhere to euthanize him, even though it was a holiday weekend. We discovered the VEG and took him there Monday morning. They examined him for blood sugar and other signs. Nero was a very sick kitty. Even before we walked in the door we saw the need to put him to sleep. They took us into a room and the vet sat on the floor as we talked about what was next. In their blurb on-line they say they "Sit on the floor or wherever your pet is most comfortable." They gave us 10 minutes (our choice) to be alone with him. We were both extremely upset. We said our goodbyes to Nero and they came back into the room. Nero left us very peacefully. They were all very kind to us. I recommend VEG without reservation and we will miss Nero so very much. He was the sweetest cat. read more

VEG is the ONLY emergency vet to bring your pet to in the DMV. They are the most caring, well-organized, attentive, professional vet I have ever been to and after moving throughout the country, I've been to dozens of vets. I wish they were more than an emergency clinic because I would use them as my primary vet. My Story: My 12-year-old healthy large dog was having severe breathing issues out of nowhere. I brought her to another emergency clinic in the DMV where after initially being told that her vitals were fine, I was told that she was in respiratory distress and there was a good chance she was going to die that night. After being caught off guard and being told things that didn't add up, I decided to leave and go home with the expectation that my best friend was likely going to pass. When I got home I decided to call VEG for a 2nd opinion (this was at midnight.) I spoke directly to the vet and they recommended I bring her in. When I got to VEG there were a group of veterinarians and techs waiting for us with oxygen. What really sets VEG apart is that you can be with your pet 100% of the time. I was able to be with my dog through the entire process, from X-Rays, to nasal tubes, to sedation. I was able to stay with her the entire time. Everyone there was so kind. They even offered me snacks and drinks and I was there until 5am. My dog hates being crated so the staff at VEG set up a pen for her and put down pads and blankets for her to lay on. They would sit with her and talk to her when she was anxious. She was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. Because of their amazing care, my dog was able to go home after only 24hrs. She was discharged at 11pm because they thought she would recover better at home. They could have taken the money for the extra night, but they wanted to do what was best for my dog. My dog is now on the path to a full recovery at home and is doing better and better every day. The visit summary was extraordinarily detailed with every vital check, medicine administration, and Radiology report. Thank you so much to Dr. White, Dr. Zepp, and Candace for everything. My dog is a feisty little guy so unfortunately I've had to bring him in to the ER quite a few times. VEG is no question my favorite vet in town. I used to go to Friendship but switched because this facility is closer to my house. Not only are the veterinarians and techs top notch and extremely caring, the facility itself is great. As a pet parent you get to go back to be with your animal as they're getting treated. The side rooms have calming music and blankets for the animals. Not to mention - there is coffee and snacks in the lobby which is wonderful for when you have to wait quite a while. One of my favorite things about it is that when you call, your phone number easily links up to your pet's record so there is no fussing with the talk about "What is your dog's name, what were they in here for last... etc". It's all just very convenient and great. My special thanks to Dr. Erickson who got me and my dog through an extremely stressful bout of pneumonia after the holidays. I wish there was a VEG in Austin where I'm moving! I will miss this entire team! read more

We found ourselves needing an emergency vet for our sweet 9 year old mastiff over the weekend. We found VEG through Yelp and drove out there on a Sunday morning. Not finding any immediate parking out front, we decided to go to another option (mastiff mixes are big and carrying her a block or more to be seen wasn't an option). As we were driving away I was looking through other reviews and just didn't get a feel good, so we called VEG and they said to just call when we were out front and they would help carry Bella in. Turns out when we drove back, a spot opened up, but they still met us outside with a stretcher and helped us carry Bella in. Sadly, we didn't get to bring Bella home, but the experience we had at VEG was amazing given the circumstances. ALL of the staff were so caring, sympathetic and most of all, sincere. The doctor spent the time we needed with him to answer any and all of our questions and concerns and was supportive of whatever decisions we had to make. They also let us stay with Bella the whole time, even while they examined her. I don't wish to have to use them again, but feel really good that we have a place we can trust and go to if/when we do have an emergency. In terms of cost, I already knew bringing our pets to an emergency vet would be expensive...but I found the invoice to be reasonable. Brought my new 9 week old puppy here when he was showing signs of fatigue, fever, stomach upset, and sniffling up a storm. Naturally I thought the worst which made a typically stressful visit even more so. On top of that, my poor puppy is extremely anxious, and his first vet visit hadn't gone so well earlier that week. Luckily the tests showed negative for the worst. Jury is still out on what exactly it was, but they treated him symptomatically and he's making a full recovery 72 hours later! On top of that, the lovely people handled my anxious pup extremely well. He was in no means perfect, but they knew exactly how to handle him so that he received his exam, shots, and additional treatment with minimal cowering. Came here because my 2yr old 70lb lab was having anal gland issues and we had just moved, thus, didn't have a primary vet for her yet. I had gone to a few PetVet clinics before and each vet said it wasn't a problem....Dr. Shah saw the abnormality and recognized it as a problem while also validating my concerns! He was patient as I explained everything and gave me the relief I had been needing for weeks. The whole staff (admin, vets, etc) was very kind and loving toward my dog, and were also kind and considerate of me. There are two days a week regular vets are closed and pet owners rely on an emergency vet for emergency services. My dog and I spent 4+ hours waiting to be seen. They had ONE vet on duty. One. On a weekend when it is our only option. My poor dog has been vomiting and diarrhea and the wait was really hard. We had to keep leaving so he could poop. Finally we ended up having to leave due to having to feed the rest of my pets and being told it could still be several hours yet to go, As a few cats seemed to take priority. They were able to walk straight in and were seen immediately. The vet area was freezing cold and I just couldn't do it anymore. So now I have to take off work tomorrow, lost time, to try to see if my vet can get him in, even though they are currently booked. I'm very worried about the health of my dog as he is not eating in addition to the diarrhea. Horrible. I have been VEG with the same problem before on a weekday. Where they actually have multiple vets working and very few pets there since vet offices are actually open. The fact that they only had one vet is very unprofessional and dangerous to the health of everyone's beloved pets. I will never return and will be sure to share my story with people I know who use them and anyone else who will listen. You just waste your time and your pet will still be sick. I feel so bad for my dog and hate that they couldn't help him feel better. Ridiculous and unnecessary. Staff your business accordingly to meet the needs of pets and pet owners. read more

I took my dog Rascal to the location on 9th & Hst NE on June 8, 2024. Rascal was having problems with his right paw, the doctor looked at his paw but never took an x-ray to see what was happening with my dog Rascal. They gave me two prescriptions and charge me $500.00. The problem continues to this day June 18, 2024. I took my dog to his primary vet today they x-ray his paw and found the problem. I will be reporting this issue to the BBB. read more

When I called about my injured turtle I was connected to a vet on the phone and she told me to bring in my pet and that they had an exotic pet vet on staff and could help me. However, when I came in in turned out they knew nothing about turtles and it took hours for them to call someone to consult with. It took until late in the day to get antibiotics/pain meds for my turtle and I was discharged and told that I had to take him to an exotic vet the very next day! After a $600 bill, I had to make another appointment the next day and see a vet in Fairfax. I wish I had been told that I should try other places before bringing my turtle in. Everyone was very nice but I do feel I was misled. They should have told me to call other places first. read more

A few days before Christmas, my 3 year old cat started drooling excessively and we thought he had ingested pine needles from our Christmas tree. We ended up calling & later taking him to VEG in Georgetown. Everyone in this establishment was EXTREMELY kind, thoughtful, and thorough in everything they did. I was very upset that we had to leave him overnight for continued evaluation after discovering a mass in his stomach and low kidney function, but the doctor on-call could not have been more assuring and I felt like he was in the best possible care. She called us at 6am to notify us that his kidney function was not improving and that he would need emergency surgery to remove the mass that ended up being a 3" hairball. They allowed us to visit any time we wanted without making us feel rushed or in the way. I know he is just a cat to some people, but to us, he is our baby child and the care they provided was above and beyond. I'm moved to tears just writing this. Almost 2 weeks later, and it's like nothing ever happened!!! He came back from an appt. with our regular vet this week showing normal bloodwork, cone off, incision looking great, and he's completely back to himself. I cannot thank these people enough for everything they did to save my baby and to comfort my fiance and I throughout that scary, stressful, sleepless time. very kind and very helpful staff both running the front desk and doing the veterinary services. I brought my cat Sylvester in for asthma symptoms (at the time we didn't know he had asthma) and the wait time was like none I don't think we waited at all. oxygen therapy was administered almost immediately and we got a diagnosis and answer about the symptoms he was displaying pretty quick as well. Dr. Brooke helped us and she was really helpful and attentive. The emergency treatment was definitely expensive but I think that's just the reality of emergency veterinary services and not an issue specific to this place. everything we paid for was necessary for the health of Sylvester and very worth it. I was an emotional stressed out wreck during our visit and every staff member I interacted with was really warm and kind and helpful. Thank you all so much again! read more

The worst experience ever. Unprofessional staff and not friendly at all. They make you pay before the service cause maybe no-one would pay them after! The doctor had an attitude unprofessional like she was bothered from people going over there. The person that was about to give the injection my dog didn't have a clue what she was doing she was moving around the injection to find the veins and my dog started bleeding and moving because was in pain and she gave the fault to the dog! She didn't gave the fluids neither because she didn't have the patience to get along with the dog. Unfriendly behavior with dogs definitely! I would choose a better place! read more

In the last month we have had to bring our kitty in three times. Each and every time we have been absolutely amazed by the entire staff at this place. From check-in, to hospitalization, to check out, every step of the way we were give thorough, easy to understand instructions and updates. Not to mention how much they all love animals. I feel silly to say this because this is their job, but all of the staff genuinely cares. When it comes to the doctors, Dr. Michael White took care of our baby and is by far the best vet we have ever worked with. He is so caring, patient and truly takes his time explaining every test, every option and medication. We have been telling all of our friends about his approach and what an incredible doctor he is! This is the best emergency vet I have ever seen. From the initial phone consultation (a woman answered immediately, was incredibly helpful and so nice), to taking my dog in, to the care he got from the doctors and nurses, it was amazing. My dog had HGE and is staying overnight. Every single person at VEG is incredibly nice and warm, and the doctors and nurses are the best. They also really support keeping animals and their people together, and I was even able to sit with my dog in his hospital kennel to help him settle before I left. Truly the best. If you have a pet emergency, this is the only place you should go. I'm so grateful my regular vet recommended them and feel really lucky my dog was cared for here. read more

We live in Maryland and needed a emergency vet for our miniature pincher. We had heard they were an impressive group. We were worried about the location (not really a DC fan) worried about parking, worried we were going to be disappointed (Vets in our area have been very disappointing) We were not disappointed!! Parked in front of the office, found location with no problem and they were as great as we had been told. Expensive, yes but we were expecting a emergency visit to be costly.
