I love coming to the Vega Café for Taco Tuesday! The fish tacos are quite large and filling with freshly battered fish. I also enjoy their crispy beef or chicken tacos. The menu is extensive and includes not only Mexican fare, but coffee drinks and smoothies as well Owners are very welcoming, and the service is good. Order at the counter and find a seat in several dining areas or grab your food to take with you into a Padres game. This place has a casual sports bar kind of feel to it and is right across the street from the ballpark. It can get very busy on game day so plan accordingly. read more

The food here can be really good, but man have they gone downhill recently. I bought a small fruit and asked for only strawberry, watermelon, pineapple, and banana. Man why are there only FOUR banana pieces in here this is a little ridiculous. I'm so disappointed. This is not how their fruit salads used to be. I did call them to let them know. I've been coming here for YEARS and I never been this disappointed in the food I received. They did offer to credit me for a fruit for next time but this is really sad to see, a business I frequent a lot going downhill this bad in portions. This mainly caters to a very busy lunch crowd this is a Mexican deli with torta sandwiches, smoothies and Mexican fruit specialties. I love this place, its the best food in the area for lunch! :) This place has more healthy food too. I recommend calling your order in on your way there or before you get there because it can get busy and sometimes take a little bit to get your food. They also deliver for free. The decor is generic restaurant, chairs and tables spaced out relatively well with two small tvs in the restaurant. The radio plays hispanic music as well as the occasional club banger in English, but is usually background to whatever company you are there with. The staff is incredibly helpful and nice, the food comes out quick. Generally when I go here I get tortas since well... They're just stupidly tasty. If it's a price comparison, it costs the same as subway, has more substance to it, and it tastes better without you having to add on a dollar for some avocado since a mix of that usually comes in the tortas anyway. And the combo addition though the same price isn't some flimsy cookie and a soda. You can get either the soup or a hefty salad that covers half of a plate. Me, myself, and I would suggest the spinach salad but I absolutely adore spinach so perhaps that's not for you. There is also a basic cobb salad and a ceasar salad for the combo. The choices for soup depends on the soup of the day being the other option aside from tortilla soup. I usually stick to some type of vegetable soup but not because I have a dislike for tortilla soup but I have to um... watch my girlish figure *cough cough* Also if you do get a torta (options being turkey, beef, pork, pierna, loma, carne asada, cubana and a couple others that I can't remember for the life of me) use the red sauce and lots of it. Tomato based, nice little kick, I want to buy buckets of it so I can eat sandwiches from other places and pour gobs of it in their place of business. DO NOT order the lasagna. The guys at work were talking about how good the sandwiches here are so I checked it out. Unfortunately, I saw they also served lasagna and I was craving lasagna recently. The smart part of my brain said, "Don't order lasagna from an American sandwich shop on the Mexican border. You will regret it." But my cravings got the best of me and I ordered it anyway. Wow, I can't believe a lasagna could taste this bad. It tasted like it has been sitting in the fridge for over a week and microwaved, then some really cheap red sauce was splashed on it. Half-way through I gave up and threw it out. It was just terrible. That said, I went back a little later to try the sandwiches since that is their specialty. I got the club and it is damn good. Fresh bread and they add cucumbers and avocado. Really, really good. I'll be going back! Re the lasagna, they should do their customers a favor and just remove it from the menu. They aren't an Italian restaurant and they obviously aren't lifting a finger trying to be, so just stick to sandwiches and dump the lasagna. It's the worst I've ever had. read more

There are also few restaurants that provide a healthier option with a tasty menu in a land where industry reigns. Vega Cafe is a good place to go on those days where you want to hold off on the grease. It's not too expensive, and it has a lot of good vegetarian and healthy comfort food favorites like chicken salad sandwiches, smoothies, and fruits and salads. It's in the middle of no where, like most places I review in the area, so you probably wouldn't want to go here unless you work in Otay Mesa, or off the 905 and Siempra Viva. I had the Cubana Torta. I was skeptical that the different ingredients would clash but it was perfect. This is my favorite Torta now. I will now use this Torta as the benchmark for all Tortas. We had the sandwich combo which comes with your choice of fountain drinks AND Mexican flavors such as Tamarindo, Horchata, and Jamaica. The green salad was crisp and generous, but ask for the dressing on the side. Indiscriminately plopped Cesar salad dressing. Fruit salad had all the classics: papaya, banana, strawberry, pineapple, and watermelon, plus the cottage cheese, granola, raisins, coconut and honey. My selective eater declared the strawberry/banana smooth "the best" due to the use of frozen fruit instead of the addition of ice to the smoothie, watering the smoothie down. They have huge portions for the price. I normally go with a friend and order one torda and split it and it satisfies both of us. Their blended coffee drinks are also great. When it's hot, I think the AC is not enough to support it but it's pretty cool so what little AC they have is fine I think. I don't really like their bathroom door (I don't know what it is... it's closes kind of heavy, I know this should be about restaurant review but it's still part of restaurant so I think it's ok). Oh also try their fruit salad... IT's gianormous, we split it between like 4 people and we didn't finish. Athough I recommond that you get it without the papaya because I don't think theirs have much flavor (but totally up to you). read more

Then today I thought I would get a coffee because I was desperate for a recharge .I ordered an Americano . I received a molten hot cup of black liquid which tasted burnt throughout .
