There's plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. I preferred an indoor seat this evening because of the heat. First, the paella comes in a hearty serving. Definitely will fill you up. **This is for the Born location!!! I am from America and didn't have the heart to figure out how to add a new Yelp business in Spain. Got the vegan paella with huerdo- chef's kiss. Very filling, and such good vegetables. The fish/meat substitute was super good. Really well done. Reasonably priced for LA standards. Not sure what standard BCN pricing is but my entree was ~15 euro. Had a small amount of leftovers. Ambiance was great, too. And staff able to speak English if you have any questions. Great allergen labeling. All around stellar spot. PS my walking tour guide said Born is much cooler and less touristy than the Gothic District- if that helps you choose which location. I had just eaten at a vegan place in Jaco, Costa Rica that made me consider becoming vegan. Vegetalia isn't that level. The Thai curry was meh. The empanadas were tasty. Vegetarian food does not need to be as mediocre as what is served at Vegetalia. * * * First of all, salt is not meat. You are allowed to add salt to food without ruining your vegan credentials. Secondly, if you don't want to use salt ... And there are people who are on low salt diets who enthusiastically welcome sodium free options ... There are these things called spices. They are commonly used in Spanish cooking. I recommend them highly. * * * Now my third objection might not be the restaurant's fault. Restaurants all over the world are having labor shortages. There is a lot of consumer demand in the Old City. That said, while the service people at Vegetalia were really really nice ... Service was really really slow. We actually left our meal unfinished because something we ordered and were waiting for had still not appeared half an hour after the rest of that course had been delivered. Frankly, I think the human beings who had to work the front of Vegetalia were totally overwhelmed. They were doing their best to provide service with a smile ... On our way to Zagreb, a cancelled flight rerouted us through Barcelona with a 12-hour layover. We took that as a bonus and went into town to visit La Segrada Familia and take a stroll on The Ramblas. My vegetarian wife and vegan daughter wanted vegetarian paella, and thanks to Yelp reviews, we discovered Vegetalia. Nuggets were great - tofu mayo was a surprise (I thought they'd slipped us something non-vegan). I was the only one interested in the seaweed salad, which was fine - loved it and didn't have to share. Got some extra nuggets and some more hummus to share and were glad we did. Only got one empanada. Big mistake. If you like empanadas, consider ordering a half dozen to go. We were actually pretty full, but wanted to try a desert. Took home 3 strudel. No pictures to share. I had a great time in Barcelona and honestly, Vegetalia was the low point of what was otherwise a great trip. My friend and I took a girls' trip to Spain and she's vegetarian so we did some research into all the spots we had meals at to be sure she could still enjoy. She ended up choosing this cafe as it had pretty good reviews and it was obviously full of vegetarian options. My friend had a soy chicken dish which was extremely mediocre and bland, and I chose a 4 cheese pizza. That pizza was the most horrid thing I've eaten in a long time. I actually had to scrape ALL of the topping off and ended up filling myself on some pizza crust alone. One of the 4 cheeses was way overpowering and didn't mesh with the other ingredients at all. a super stinky strong cheese. ugh. The service was equally abhorrent. The restaurant was practically empty and yet the server took forever to come by take our order. We also had no direction afterwards to go pay at the front so we sat forever, and they SAW us staring around idly, yet still didn't come over and help us. The restaurant is nice; single level with unique tables and mismatched chairs. We sat towards the back, where we could see the kitchen; it looked like there was only 1 chef preparing all the meals. My friends and I ordered a carne empanada and the paella. The empanada was interesting; the carne was made from seitan and tempeh, but was seasoned well so it wasn't too dry or tasteless. I feel as if it could have been filled more, as there were large air gaps, and the pastry was getting soggy. This is a lovely little vegetarian cafe only slightly off the tourist-beaten path. We stopped in for lunch and I had the premium burger (seitan) and a cortado cafe. The seitan patty was flavorful with a nice texture (maybe a little too soft) and came with vegetable chips. I opted for the freshly baked bun instead of rice and salad, although I'm unclear on whether choosing the side over the bun meant it would've come with a store-bought bun or no bun--if the bun were replaced with a run-of-the-mill bun I would probably suggest going with that and getting the extra side instead. First, I have to say, that we went there twice, once in the evening and once at lunch-time. The service was VERY fast and friendly but as I mentioned before, the starter plate and my boyfriend's paella were quite uninspiring and "ok". So, the next day, we were strolling around in the city center and thought of giving Vegetalia an other chance because my burger and my smoothie were soooo delicious. This time, my boyfriend had the bocadillo of the day with brie, tomato, pesto and salad which he liked very much, and I had some pan tomate which was delicious as well as my smoothie Tropicalia with pineapple and coconut. Ordered the nachos & guac, vegetarian paella, and the Thai green curry. These were on the money, fresh and delicious. The veggie pizza was bland. Some Marinara would have given it the zest it sorely needed. Dessert, I'd recommend sticking with something they're good at...I ordered the apple strudel which was semi-disappointing. Good food, service, ambience and location. That's really the best way to describe Vegetalia. We found our way here when another veg place close by was packed. They've got a good diverse menu that should be able to accommodate most in your group. Pizza (quite tasty), Ramen Soup (decent) and a host of other dishes. We stopped here for dinner one night. A pitcher of sangria was only 8,50 euros. That was the cheapest one we got the whole time in Barcelona! I ordered the veggie nuggets. The dipping sauce that came with it was delicious, it was like a white yogurt sauce. It came with a small side salad with a very tasty dressing. Definitely try these nuggets!
