They use cheap aftermarket parts. It cost me $2375 to resolve the engine light warning. They replaced a vapor canister, it didn't work, spark plugs, it didn't work, an aftermarket catalytic converter, it didn't work. They replaced the catalytic converter with an original factory made for an extra $440. It still didn't work. The mechanic finally found that the problem was with another aftermarket part that they had installed on the system less than 2 years ago. This place has THE BEST labor prices around. They are very willing to work with you and provide honest, no BS service. They're not as fancy as your car dealer maintenance shops but who the fuck needs fancy waiting areas when you're getting your car fixed for almost half the price of other places. I love coming here. The cute young lady(Evie) at the front desk is knowledgeable and merciful. You may bring your own parts with you without getting a stink eye. I thought I needed a new muffler so on Friday I stopped by Velasquez Muffler & Brake in Waukegan. Business was slow so they got me in right away. Told me my muffler was fine, but the connection to the exhaust pipe had deteriorated. They cut the bad part away and welded a new sleeve into place. Honest, prompt, reasonable. Was quoted $320 over the phone. $714 in person. Wasted 2 1/2 hours. I called and spoke to a man ~ 8:02AM 8/3 (Saturday). I asked him how much for new brake pads and rotors all the way around. He said "$320" but they need to look to make sure that is what I need. I told them that I need all of it done. "$320?" I said. "Yes. $320." So, I drove there. Dropped it off ~ 8:30AM as promised. "We will call you in 45 minutes to let you know how much." "You quoted $320 for everything right?" "Yes." I walk 10 minutes away to a Dunkin Donuts. 1 hour and 15 minutes later I call them because they did not call me. "$714." "You quoted me $320." "No. We will not do that." "You just wasted 2 1/2 hours of my time. Please pull the vehicle out so I can pick it up and leave." I walk 10 minutes back and then wait 20 minutes for the vehicle to be taken down. I finally got home ~ 11:30AM. 3 1/2 hours wasted. Sigh. They did good work for me years ago at a fair price. Now, they are just another SCAMMING AUTO CARE SHOP. SIGH!!! read more

Very honest people and reasonably priced. They fixed my car for $200 when dealership was quoting $1500. They ordered OEM part for my car but the part didn't come in on time and I had to leave my car overnight. They gave a discount on OEM part (they priced it as after market). One time, I took the car in to inspect a noise. They worked on the car for 30 minutes and said the noise is coming from inside the engine. When I asked how much I owed, they said they didn't fix anything so it's free. This is unheard of in the car repair business. They are one of the few honest car mechanics left out there. read more

Great place to bring your car to get fixed. We have brought our car and truck a few times now and they always do a great job.

I have been going here for the last 10 years. Why? Because they do quality work and it costs about half of what they charge you down in Northbrook, Highland Park, Wilmette, etc. It's worth the drive up to Waukegan. Not to mention that they are honest. If possible, they will resurface your rotors instead of making you buy new ones. If you do have to buy parts, they don't put a ridiculous markup on them. They put a custom dual exhaust on my classic car for a price that's too low to disclose here. I also brought in my truck for front-end work, and they replaced a whole bunch of steering components for a great price. My wife brought in her car because the brakes were squeaking and they just cleaned something and sent her on her way - no charge. Need I say more? read more

NOTE: This is for Velasquez's E Grand Location. I thought I would never write a review in my life let alone a bad one but this goes to show the absolute disgust I have with the service given here. I will start by saying if I could "give" 0 stars I would. Velasquez serviced my car to get a simple oil change everything went fine for quite some time until the car stopped starting. Come to find out Velasquez had put the wrong oil filter in the car and it caused some damage all around. When confronted with the problem the mechanic scoffed and stated he has been doing this forever and that the oil filter he put in is a universal for japanese vehicles. When we took a look at the itinerary we were given by them they wrote down our Vehicle was a 6 cycl when it is clearly a 4-cycl. We also contacted Toyota and they confirmed that the part he used for my vehicle was incorrect. (There's a .3 inch difference). When given this information the arrogance and ignorance ensued as this gentleman stated "What would they (Toyota) know, this isn't a Toyota part". Seeing as this gentleman is clearly a "A Know-Nothing Know-It-All" and seems to clearly have built the car himself and since he refused to help and do anything for us so they will not being hearing the last from us. So if you don't like being violated without being asked on a date first, I would advise you not to take your money to Velasquez in any state. read more

Went here for an estimate for my muffler that broke. I was informed by their mechanic that they just need to cut the bad part, put an attachment and weld it at a very very reasonable price. This saves me thousand of $$$$ compared to a dealership. It is a first come first serve basis so you want to come in early, specially on weekend. Went here to get my catalytic converters replaced they noticed something else that was wrong and fixed it up at no cost. Ordered my part dropped my car off the next morning got a call a mere 2-3 hours later that it was done. Got my car fixed and come to find out there was something else off [a sensor or something like that] that was saved and fixed yet again at no additional cost plus i received a coupon for 10% which saved me nearly $80! so, I haven't been on this site for years but feel compelled to share.. 2 years ago i spend almost $700 on a full brake repair.. fast forward to this week.. 2 years later.. my rear breaks start grinding... I take it back to Velasquez... I leave my keys in the drop box with a copy of the receipt from 2 years ago and a brief explanation of whats wrong.. on a side note.. I know more about car mechanics then the average person... I went to them because they had a warranty and lifetime on the pads!!.. so I get a call from them a few hours later telling me that my rear brakes are shot.. one of the calipers isn't work and the other wheel is down to metal.. in the rear... the front are fine... read that again... braking power comes from the front.. 2/3 at least.. therefore the brakes on a full set of brake job.. the front will always wear out before the rear... so.. I tell the guy that there is a lifetime warranty on the pads... he says they don't have anything like that... I tell him to look at the copy of the receipt.. he puts me on hold.. a minute later he says he can reduce the price from $475 to $375... frustrated.... I say do it. this is the car I'm giving to my 17 year old son and I don't want to skimp on safety.. so.. I go to pick up the car after work.. a kid at the counter.. I say do you think this is right.. rear breaks.. 2 years.. didn't initially acknowledge the warranty.. he says that I must brake hard... I say.. yeah.. if it were the front brakes I would agree, but since they are fine and the back ones are the ones messed up.. it must be an issue with the work done.. he snickers... I say.. so in 2 more years and these brakes fail.. what should I do? he says I should bring it back in... I say I will.. but not here.. he snickers again.. I tell him I've been driving for 40 years.. never have I had and issue with brakes after 2 years.. shrugs his shoulder... I will NEVER EVER go back here... I'm guessing all the positive reviews are from first time customers... I get it.. I felt the same way 2 years ago.. either that or they're employees of the garage.. My first time there was Feb 2014. I needed a new muffler and oil change for a recently purchased car. I first called the office to explain my problem and to see if I was able to take the car in that day. The manager (Evie) explained the whole process to me. Take the car in, let them check it out...etc. So I did just that. I was very new to the area so I was very happy to find this shop! The staff was outstanding and very knowledgeable about what exactly the problem was with the muffler and the approximate cost.
