Over priced, slow, and deceiving. I went in for a tire patch. They said it would be 5 mins and he'd even put it back on for me. I recieved and approved a quote for $24. After waiting for 25 minutes my car was ready and the final bill was $56. They charged an additional $22 to "put it back on and put the spare away". Overall was triple the price of competitors, slower than promised and lied about the price initially. read more

What a lovely surprise to stumble into this place with a flat tire the other day! They took care of the car right away and were done in 10 minutes. Chris was amazing, making me feel right at home in the tiny but surprisingly well-outfitted and comfy waiting room. Once the tire was assessed, Chris walked me through the repair with a bunch of photos on his tablet and showed me the status of all four tires. It's time for a new set, I'm convinced, but he was definitely "no pressure." Come back when you can, basically. His method and manner make you want to come back to him for the job. I felt a little disrespected after taking my car here to get repairs done. I had agreed by phone before my appointment that I would bring an upgrade clutch to replace the worn one on my Audi. The day I dropped off the car, I missed a call from Chris while I was at work. He decided to call my mom (our family is in their system) and basically lie to her saying the clutch I had purchased 'would not fit' and they would need to instead use an OEM clutch. Not sure why this was acceptable seeing as it was my car and my appointment. I called Chris later that day and he still insisted the part I had purchased wouldn't fit. I knew better than this (the part I had purchased was indeed correct) and eventually got him to admit to his lie and he agreed to put the part in. I don't really understand what his angle was here, was he trying to upsell me on a stock clutch? Not sure. We could've had an honest conversation about his worries surrounding the upgrade I had chosen but I guess he didn't expect me to call his bluff. They get an extra star because as far as I can tell everything runs fine with the new clutch. I guess I learned my lesson and should've just put the part in myself rather than pay for the convenience. read more

Having just moved to Lake Bluff, I needed an oil change for my 2018 Toyota Highlander. Being a devoted Yelp user, I noticed the 4 and 5 Star reviews that Sunset got. I called to schedule an appointment and had VERY specific questions. Do they have Mobil 1 in 0W20 weight? Yes. I know from past oil changes the Highlander oil filter requires a special fixture to remove the old filter and install the new one- Do have this fixture?. The answer was "we've worked on Highlanders before and have the fixture". Great! Final question: How much? $120 was the answer. I replied "That's a little steep" but proceeded to book a 3:00 PM appointment. Full disclosure I was 25 minutes late, but talked on the cell and told them I'd be there in 5 minutes (I live less than a mile away). Pulled in and handed the keys to "Yanni " whom I had talked to on the phone. While waiting, I Googled O'Reilly Auto Parts for their prices for Mobil 1 in 0 W20. A 5 qt jug was $35.99 or $7.20 per quart. Since the Highlander takes 5.8 quarts, a sixth single quart was $9.99 for a total of $45.98. When the work was completed Yanni presented me with a bill for $14.78 per quart or $88.68 total for oil alone. I showed Yanni my IPHONE with the $7.20 per quart RETAIL price versus his bill for more than double ($14.78). I fully expected him to make an adjustment to the bill, since he was obviously ripping me off. His only response was "Yeah but that's only 5 quarts". I then showed him where a sixth single quart was only $9.99 at Oreilly, and it's less than 4 miles up the road on Greenbay Road. When no adjustment to the bill was forthcoming, I told Yanni his credibility was less than zero. I have no problem with a 10 to 15% markup on oil, but 92.8% is ripping off the customer, especially when confronted with the proof on my IPHONE. This is unfortunate because if he had made a token adjustment of $20 to $30 off the oil price, I'd have been happy and become a repeat customer. Being less than a mile from my house, having many positive Yelp reviews and being owned by a female minority were the main reasons I chose Sunset. Now I'll have to drive a little further to get automotive service where I'm billed at fair prices. Any potential oil change customers need to do their research and get quoted a specific price per quart for a specific brand and weight of oil, preferably in writing. Being a new customer I trusted that Sunset charges fair prices for oil and parts. I was wrong to trust in them. read more

Made my appointment earlier in the week and then I had my tires rotated, battery changed, and oil changed. Expected excellent service and was provided with it. Never are they too pushy with what might needs to be done to your car, but tells you the details of potential problems. Reasonable prices for quality parts. I didn't mind the wait since the waiting room had wifi, bottled water, and a tv. When my car was ready, they didn't try up charging me for a million things like most oil change places. I have been in Customer Service for the last 10 years of my life, with that being said it takes a lot to get that WOW factor. From the minute that I walked into the shop, they greeted me with huge smiles! I went in for an oil change which was about 30 minutes and they were very thorough. I asked them to look at a few other problems, without hesitation they were happy to assist with a 'safety inspection' After that was done Eric came back to greet me and let me know of a few things. He was very honest and very knowledgeable. I also added to get my windshield wipers changed.. They went the extra mile to scrape off residue that was left from one of those flyers under my wipers! The waiting room had comfy chairs, bottle water and coffee and free WIFI. One very silly side note... The shop SMELLS AMAZING! I know crazy.. Right?!?! The customer service was EXCELLENT! But, I was beyond impressed with the owners' genuine care to ensure customer is well taken care of, and going out of their way to get it right - while I do regret that my experience wasn't the greatest (on the mechanical end) it was definitely beyond superb on the customer service end. WARNING: From recommendations from friends and on Yelp, I went to Sunset Tire & Auto in Lake Bluff for tire replacements of my husband's BMW 335i Convertible. Had to leave the car there this past weekend, since Chris, the manager, told me that they were still awaiting delivery of the rear tires. My husband picked up his car yesterday (paid over $800) and while driving it back home, he noticed things different about the car: heat was set at 83 degrees, all the mirrors were changed, gas tank was low (was full when dropped off), seat moved...no big deal, right? They usually drive the car out for a little bit to check all is well. Sure, we know that. Well, my husband checked the mileage and compared it to the mileage logged on the paperwork when it was dropped off at Sunset Tire & Auto---over FIFTY miles were added!! FIFTY! That's almost a drive into the city and back!! When my husband called, asking calmly how this could possibly happen, Chris gave the excuse that they had to drive it around to check alignment. But when asked why it was driven over FIFTY miles since the car was dropped off & why that just didn't make sense, Chris HAD NOTHING TO SAY!!!! This place is junk and will take advantage of you. I took my vehicle in to receive work on my brakes and was told I needed over $2500 worth of other repairs. Within 24 hours of receiving my vehicle back, my check engine light illuminated which I had no previous engine issues prior to my service here. When I took my car back, they said the code was for an O2 sensor and they were testing it. After waiting over an hour, I inquired about the wait and was told they were waiting for the sensor to arrive to install which I had not approved. I felt backed into a corner and told them to go ahead with replacing it. When able, I took their estimate to my normal mechanic and he said only one of the items listed needed repaired and it cost $40. read more
