The only place my family takes their cars, and for good reason. Don't be fooled with how short they may seem on the phone when making an appointment, nor how "messy" their shop is. This place is premium. Joe generally works on our cars and calls frequently throughout the day to check in and let me know whats going on. He NEVER does any work that doesn't need doing (i.e: I thought I needed a whole knew windshield wiper and motor, but he showed me how to fix it by tightening something. He could have EASILY squeezed money out of me for the part that I was WILLING to pay, but took the honest way around it instead). They are so trustworthy. I recently took my car in for an oil change and the place told me that the previous mechanic must have stripped my oil pan plug and I would need to replace the entire oil pan. They quoted me $610, the local Ford dealer quoted $700. I decided to call North End Garage to get their price. Rather than replacing the oil pan they were able to fit a new/larger pan plug and told me to monitor it rather than doing a much more costly repair. The best part: all they wanted was $20! Don't think I have ever spent that little at a mechanic before.... Needless to say they will not only be doing all my future oil changes for my cars..they will always be my first consult for auto repairs. NEVER AGAIN!!!! Had a power steering problem with my car. They first said the power steering pump needed to be replaced, that didn't fix the problem. Next they said it was the rack and pinion, that didn't fix the problem. Was told they had tried everything, including blowing out the lines, removing the resevoir, and cleaning out the screen at the bottom. Still had same problem. Cost of parts (that apparently were not needed) and labor was $900.00 and still no power steering. Was told at this point "I have no idea what the problem is". Took my car to another shop in town and they diagnosed and fixed the problem in under 2 hours. Apparently the screen at the bottom of the resevoir was clogged and just needed to be cleaned out. Sound familiar? That's right! Exactly what North End SAID they had done. They are not only incompetent, but also lied about what work they did when I was told the screen was cleaned. I looked past the fact that everytime I was in their shop at least one of the mechanics was drinking a beer. I know; bad sign right there, but I was already in too deep and was still holding out hope that they may figure out the problem. My parents have been loyal customers to these guys for years now and today made me question that. From my first impression; These guys are quite unprofessional on the business side of the job. I cannot speak on their technical skills but if they don't want to work on your car, they're not polite enough to just tell you flat out. They rather keep pushing back the schedule, ask the same questions every time you call them to remind them (as they request), and then finally be unprepared on the time/day you are on the schedule and tell you come back tomorrow. My mother and I wasted our time trying to go with these guys. My parents were loyal and talked highly of them so we insisted on going to them with our business. With trying to work out a transaction with these guys for the past 2.5 weeks I've come to the conclusion that it was a complete waste of time. They never wanted my business in the first place... which (like I said) they could have just told me. Instead they just wasted both mine and their time. I should have noticed earlier but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I'm here to tell you, you shouldn't. I'm sure there are plenty of other garages that will be much happier to do their job for you. These guys are miserable and very impolite. It ended up working out in my favor anyway I went somewhere else, got great service and paid about $200 less then I would have at this sad shop. My parents will no longer be going to this garage either. My dad came to the conclusion that these guys rather stick to oil changes and brake pads and make just as much money doing easy jobs rather than get their hands dirty in the bigger jobs that actually require intensive mechanical expertise. This way they can have more time hanging out in the shop shooting the shit rather than busting ass and taking pride in what they do. Bring your business to the guys who want to do exceptional work. Car started running very rough and threw a check engine light. Called North End in the morning and they said bring it in same day. Don't be fooled by the looks of the shop (which looks like it hasn't changed in 50 years). They had the problem diagnosed and fixed (ignition coil) in the same day. Jeff did a great job explaining what went wrong, how much the repair would be and why, the pros/cons of not fixing it, and how long it would take to fix it. The repair fixed the problem, and the car was ready exactly when they said it would be ready. Rates were very reasonable ($95/hr for labor, and parts were marked up about 10% over NAPA, which is typical). When I picked the car up, they were very friendly. I found this garage on Yelp! And was not disappointed. The reviews match the service. Called for an appointment, and got a possible diagnosis over the phone. Convenient drop off key slot for after hours. Tom, the mechanic there, called me early the next morning, and gave me the most likely issue with my Toyota wheel bearing. A friend of mine had their Toyota serviced at the dealer, and they replaced all 4 bearings, and overcharged her. North End will only fix what is needed to get your car back on the road. The first time I took my car to North End Garage was a few months ago (March 2013). I had just come from a terrible experience with the Libertyville Car-X. They replaced my failing AC compressor with a rebuilt compressor, then tacked on a bunch of miscellaneous charges. I ended up paying a total of $1800. Two days later, my CEL light came back on. I went back to the Car-X to inquire about it. They did a diagnostic test and said that I would need another $500-$600 in repairs for my exhaust system. They said that I didn't need to get it fixed right away, but that I would certainly need to get it fixed before my next emissions test. I went home and cried. I knew I'd been taken advantage of. I had no intention of ever taking my car back there. Then an employee of a local Libertyville business that I frequent recommended the North End Garage. He said they were honest and very good. A few days before I was due to get my license plates renewed, I went to the Emissions Testing Facility, where my car failed - as expected. I took my car to the North End Garage and after getting some deserved razing by the "patriarch" of the business about waiting until the last minute to get my car fixed, they took it in. They did a diagnostic right then and gave me an estimate, which was about $300 less than what Car-X wanted to charge me. They asked me if I needed a ride anywhere, which I declined (I decided to shop in town while the car was being fixed). This was at 10:00 AM. I went back to the Garage at noon and they were just getting ready to call me to say it was ready. The cost was even less than what they'd estimated and HERE'S THE KICKER: unknown to me, the mechanic took my car to the Emissions Testing Facility and got it tested for me. It passed and he gave me all of the form work so that all I had to do was go to the Secretary of State and get my plates! I have never heard of that kind of service in my life! It was truly above and beyond. Needless to say, they have a customer for life and I recommend them to anyone and everyone I can. read more
