I am forced to upgrade my phone, but because the screen that was used is not an actual apple screen, my phone has zero trade in value. You have a lot of options when it comes to finding somebody to fix your cracked screen, flaky battery, or busted headphone jack. You can take it to Apple, but you have to pay the Apple Tax. You can find the cheap kiosk at the mall, or the shady dude that advertises on Craigslist, but if you're not watching their work, there's a decent chance that they'll harvest good OEM parts out of your phone while they have it open, replacing them with cheap knockoffs. Or worse, they might leave your phone more broken than when you started. I *love* my phone. I call it my "2nd brain" and rely on it for offloading things my main-brain shouldn't have to track, like remembering birthdays and membership numbers, or knowing the fastest way home during rush hour. When my phone's not working, my brain's not working, and it needs immediate attention from somebody I trust. I trust Jorge. I also trust his young team of local teens with friendly attitudes and nimble fingers, because he has trained them well. This trust is built up over repeated awesome experiences. I'm an IT professional by trade, and I'm very aware when it comes to good customer service in the technology sector. While hanging out at Velocity iPhone Repair, I've seen Jorge and his team at work, helping people, with patience, empathy, and clear explanations and expectation setting. I've seen him more than once refuse payment for things that were easy for him to identify and resolve, but would never occur to most people, like a phone that wouldn't charge because the port needed to be cleaned of pocket-lint. The past three nights my iPhone 6S Plus lost its charge, down to 1%, regardless of the level of charge it had when I went to bed. The first night or two I thought maybe it was the result of the cold nights we've been having, but it wasn't THAT cold, maybe 47°. I had bookmarked Velocity a few years ago. It was easier and more convenient to go to than the place I had been taking my iPhone 5S to in Berkeley. I called Jorge this morning to see if I needed an appointment as I did in Berkeley and I didn't. He told me just to come after noon. I looked up the address and directions and thought I had a pretty good idea where it was. After lunch I drove over and found it, a colorfully painted building on the southwest corner of Barrett and Wilson, just west of San Pablo Avenue. I parked across the street on Wilson and walked over, past the colorful Brazilian hamburger/hot dog truck parked at the curb. I rang the doorbell several times and there was no answer. After 5 or 10 minutes I started to walk back to my car so I could sit down and call him. A nice young man who had been standing, then sitting, nearby called after me that Jorge was there and that he would call him, which he did. Jorge rushed back to the shop and opened the window. He explained that he had been in the backyard, hooking up a neighbor's security camera to his iPhone. He sheepishly acknowledged that he hadn't hooked up his doorbell to his own iPhone. He took my phone, removed the cover and gave it to me, then removed the old battery and put in a new one, then put the cover back on. It took probably 5 minutes, 10 at the most.
