In October my cellphone stopped sending photos to my computer. I'd do what I had done previously and they looked like they were being sent but they never showed up. To test whether it was my desktop or the phone, I sent them to my laptop too w/ the same result. I had a memory that I had bookmarked a cellphone repair place in El Cerrito bookmarks but when I looked through my bookmarks I couldn't find it, so I did a Yelp search and 3R-TEK came up. It's in the Peppermint Plaza, where Dolly's, Larb Thai and Nori Sushi are, and the reviews are good. So a couple of weeks ago I stopped by. Alan (the shop owner) looked through my phone, deleted a bunch of unnecessary junk and then checked further. He discovered that there was an issue w/ AOL, which is responsible for sending stuff from my phone to my emails. This is so above my pay grade! He told me that my password needed to be either changed or put back in. He said if I couldn't do it to come back w/ my password and he would do it for me, then he sent me on my way w/o charging me a cent. W/ all that has been going on w/ the furnace, storms, etc I hadn't addressed it. Today I had lunch w/ Tammy and Kevin to celebrate Tammy's birthday. Kevin works in tech. I had brought my password and when we finished our lunch I gave the phone and password to Kev. He double checked a couple of things in the password and in no time he had fixed the issue. He could tell from looking at the phone, the same way Alan had diagnosed the problem. Once I got home I sent a couple of photos to test it and it worked! So I sent the rest of the photos that had accumulated in the phone since I couldn't send them and will post them on their respective reviews. You can expect to see a bunch of new photos. I appreciate Alan diagnosing the problem and Kev fixing it. For those who don't know me, Alan was my late husband's name. I wanted to make that distinction for those who do know me so there would be no confusion or concern on their part when they read it. Unbelievably bad experience which I am sad to report in the face of all these glowing reviews. Alan replaced the screen on my phone with great success but less than a week later the display started flickering and having lines across the display at various levels of brightness. Emails went unanswered but when I dropped off my phone Alan did say he would look at it the same day and to stop by later. When I did, however, he pointed to a scratch on the screen and claimed that was the cause of the screen flicker. At first I misunderstood and thought he was apologizing for scratching my screen, but I quickly realized he was blaming user error and said he would not cover the repair because it was damage sustained in the interim. The only problem is that there had been no scratch when I dropped the phone off. If I had to guess, the replacement parts used in the repair don't match some specification (Hz, resolution) of the oem parts and he needed an excuse because there was no way to resolve the issue. Pretty upset but little to do about it but post a review here... TLDR; I basically paid $300 to trade in my cracked screen for a flickering screen with a scratch across it. I guess even Gorilla Glass can't withstand the family gorilla stepping on their kid's iPad display in the middle of the night...crunch! Was fortunate enough to come across Alan at 3R Tek to save the day! It was super easy to engage with him through an online yelp estimate/quote, schedule an appt and then pick up the repaired device same day. He was more responsive than other folks and did a great job, even charging 20% less than some other options in the area. On top of that he offered to help remove a built-in crap plastic sheet glued onto to a SUPCASE iPad case so it could be replaced it with a more resilient and better-looking thin glass screen protector. As I have a second kid with the same iPad and case, he showed me how he removed the plastic so I could do the same fix on my own, which based on his instructions I was easily able to do. Absolute amazing service. My dad dropped his phone the day after using a shitty phone cover he bought from Korea (insert eye roll) instead of using the Otterbox I bought him, so I took his phone over here and got it replaced. It was super quick and easy and relatively cheap! I'm so sad that I didn't think of asking him to fix my iphone charging port while I was in there, but alas, I must go back when I actually am up visiting my parents. I've been to other cellphone repair shops (for my dad, of course) and this place was the best, and it was actually open on a Sunday. My iPhone 7 Plus audio chip failed. I took it the Apple store, and they were not at all helpful even the problem is really a defect. Anyway, I searched Yelp for quotes and described the symptoms. I took my phone to 3R TEK per their request, they didn't spend much time asking me questions and told me to leave the phone until later or tomorrow. The problem was identified and confirmed what I described in the end but couldn't be fixed so cost me nothing. I deducted one star for the so so communication. If they let me show them the problem instead of assuming, it would have saved both of our time. I noticed that the place was clean and professional. I went in to get my screen repaired. I bought a brand new screen from Amazon for my Motorola G Power. I was planning on replacing the screen myself but it was too hard to get the old screen off. So I brought it in to 3R TEK. I gave the new screen (with the plastic film cover still stuck to it) to the employee and he charged me $100 for labor. When I got my phone back, the screen had a crack and there was lint between the plastic film cover and the screen. I didn't notice at first and left. Later, after 15 min or so (I went to order Pad Thai next door), I went back to him to show the crack and he accused me of dropping my phone again. When that didn't seem likely, he accused Amazon of sending me a broken replacement screen. Then he told me that I should order the part from the repair shop instead of buying it myself. I really wanted to like this place. Unfortunately, my one star is based on my disappointment with a component I feel is extremely important for any business: honesty. In short, this business owner lied. I originally brought my phone in for a cracked screen. He fixed the screen, but I immediately began having problems with screen freezing. I brought the phone in again and he said his tech couldn't find a problem. He gave the phone back to me and said if the problem continued he would replace the screen a second time. Well, The screen kept freezing. I brought the phone back for a third visit and he denied the offer, said he'd already replaced the screen at my last visit, and would only give a partial refund. This was adding up to be a frustrating waste of my time and money. He was not honest about the second screen replacement and I ended up with a malfunctioning phone. Very disappointing. read more
