Just moved to the area and thought I'd try a different salon because I usually go to one downtown but they didn't have any appointments that day and I really needed a deep conditioning treatment. Made an appointment that day with a stylist. I can't remember her name but very unfriendly. She asked me what I wanted and said I wanted a few inches cut off and long layers with shorter layers in the front. She ended up giving me terrible bangs and no layers. I also left the salon with my back soaking wet for $70...not worth it. Don't go here. I want my time, hair and money back! read more

So we left the state for a couple of years and are now back temporarily. My husband Daniel needed a haircut. He had been purposefully growing his hair out for months and it just needed a clean up because his hair was becoming a bit difficult to style and growing over his ears. He loved his hair so much the way it was. We knew Catie was excellent from the several previous haircuts he'd received when we lived here before. We liked her so much that we went above and beyond to find her though her last name had changed and she had moved locations. But Catie did not meet our hopes in any way. Despite showing her pictures and my husband pretty much already having the haircut we desired, she took an hour to give him a Mohawk. When combed to the side the haircut is reminiscent of Hitler's. He works in a professional environment. Neither a Hitler cut or a Mohawk is appropriate but he has no choice now. Daniel played it off pretty well at the salon but he hates it even more than I do. Catie went from severely disappointing me to pissing me off when I said it looked bad, she said it didn't! I understand having pride in your work. I understand that it was a professionally cut Mohawk. But we didn't ask for that! She destroyed several months of hair growth in an hour and when told it looked bad couldn't even hold her peace. So annoying. If she went in for some layers and left with completely shaved sides, she would not be saying it looked good! She at least did not charge for the haircut and she did apologize. If she would have charged for the disgusting job she did I would have lost it. I am so furious. If you like painful unpredictability then book with Catie. She isn't new to the business. She proved to us previously that she is VERY good at what she does. So either her skills are deteriorating swiftly or she did this on purpose. No matter what, I cannot ever again recommend Catie Ojeda (formerly Lewis) anymore. read more

I have this theory. Alright so it's not MY theory because it's so simple and stupid that I'm sure more than one person has thought about this but I'm putting it up on Yelp so dammit, I'm pretending it's my theory! Actually, I suppose "hypothesis" is more fitting... My hypothesis is as follows: If a female provides you a particular service for money (not that kind of service), you're more likely to disregard or explain away any mistake that she makes if she is very attractive than if she is unattractive or average looking. This of course does not include utterly blatant mistakes that just cannot be ignored. I've noticed this happen in restaurants, bars, clubs, grocery stores, apartment leasing offices, universities, etc. I can only speak of girls on this hypothesis because good-looking guys have never been able to fool me in the same sense. Case in point, the VMS has a location (on Western? Penn? Somewhere in OKC...) that offers 1/2 Price Wednesday specials. So I thought I'd try it out since I have to be in a wedding in a week and I'm the cheap guy who waits until there's a special to get a haircut. The girl was named Jessica and she was very friendly, and... attractive. Actually most of the stylists in there were very attractive and had that whole edgy hotness to them. So do I like my haircut? I think so. I mean she did a good job but I'm assuming it didn't turn out exactly as I had it in my mind because: (1) I suck at explaining to the good-looking stylist what I wanted, (2) my hair is really difficult to work with, or (3) she had already made up her mind on what she wanted to do and knew that she could get away with it by smiling prettily at me. I tipped her nicely... My girlfriend is going to yell at me because I'm such a sucker. But then she pulls the same crap on me too so I should include her in my hypothesis. It's been months since my "balayage" disaster at The Velvet Monkey Too and my hair is still damaged and I've paid over $600 for corrective jobs at other salons. Chyna did my hair and after going back and looking at her Instagram (which looks like she does a decent balayage) it's clear she heavily edits her photos. The brick wall behind all her clients drastically changes in tone and color. So it seems as if she edits her photos to show the correct hair tone she couldn't achieve in real life. I was totally fooled and paid the price with my hair. Please don't go here. Getting your hair done is so expensive and time consuming, go somewhere where they will do it right and you won't be embarrassed for months after you leave the salon. read more

I asked for rounded, face framing layers and did not get that. Instead I got short layers all around the back of my head and layers were not blended. At the end I looked like I had a bowl cut on top of long hair- it just wasn't at all like the reference picture. The woman who did my hair was lovely as a person and very kind but based on the work on her Instagram page which I found after, she is great at braids and locs, which is fantastic VMtoo offers a wide range of services. But cutting straight hair just didn't seem to be her forte. Not a big deal- but just wish I had been told there is no available slots rather than book me with someone who isn't specialized in that area. Booked an appointment with Serena. I'm a natural brunette with mid length curly hair. She and one other stylist told me they wouldn't take my orange blonde highlights and turn them into platinum blonde because it would damage my hair and take out the curl. My mom and me went to Sally's got 60 dollars worth in supplies and she did it herself. Came out exactly how I wanted and my hairs just as curly as it was before! A couple months overdue and still pretty disappointed with my cut every time I look in the mirror :-( My cut was done by Mandi. I told her it was my first time there and showed her a picture of what I wanted, which was long layers and slight waves to frame my face. Pros: -ONE star for chopping off the dry/split ends. Cons: - My "layers" were blunt and obvious, and the cut was uneven as I have some long random hairs poking out. - No effort to recreate the look I wanted. Left the salon with stick straight hair. I even washed and straightened my hair before my appt. so all that was required was attention to technique/detail. - The website says her rate is $40, but I was charged $45. - Another customer booked the same time as I did for this stylist, and only because I arrived early was I able to get in. **Call and confirm that your stylist isn't double booked** Needless to say I will not be returning - this place needs to get it together. I'm just looking forward to seeing my stylist back home in CA to fix this uneven/choppy mess in a few weeks! read more

So this is a long overdue review that I meant to write since October... I LOVE THIS PLACE! Seriously, I have been to a couple hair salons around the area and this is my favorite. It was a Wednesday afternoon and I happened to be in Oklahoma City so I thought I would just swing by and take them up on their 1/2 Price Wednesday special. I'm not sure how long the promotion is going to last so you should call ahead if you want the discount. Once I got there I was immediately taken care of. My hairstylist was a cute and sweet girl named Emily Clark. She is absolutely awesome and I highly recommend her! So first she gave my hair a nice wash and then she got to cutting. The thing I like about Emily is that she asks you how you want your hair to be cut, she reiterates it to confirm that she understands what you want, she gives her honest input on what she thinks would look good with your face, and then... she actually does what you want! Crazy! I know! After the haircut she even styled it for me, however, I'm not sure if that was part of the promotion or if she just wanted to do it. Anyhow, the end result was great! As I was walking out of the salon a guy even stopped me and asked to touch my hair cause he thought it looked pretty nice. The final bill was $20 (GREAT PRICE!) and I gave her a generous tip. I would definitely pay the full price for the treatment that I received and this promotion just makes everything sweeter. She gave me her business card which actually has some info about 1/2 Price Wednesdays. According to the card, the promotion is valid on colors, cuts, and facial waxing for a limited time. Okay, so the story I'm about to tell has a very happy ending thanks to Velvet Monkey Salon Too and the amazing Allessa Black. I am a big hearted person. So when a friend mentioned that her friend did hair, and that she was struggling, I said I needed a few things done to my hair. The friend of a friend (the "stylist" (and I use this term very loosely) said she could do my type of hair and that highlights would be no problem. So after a series of missed appointments due to scheduling on both ends, I finally got in on a Friday. Long before the appointment, I forwarded the stylist information on the highlight dye and color from my previous stylist in Los Angeles. The rest is my fault for not running away when I should have. The condensed version: I did not get what I asked for. My red highlights ended up looking like someone slapped red pain on eight inches of my hair. It was bright, blotchy, and oh so not what I wanted. I informed the stylist that this was not what I wanted and she blew it off. But once I sent her pictures of what she did, she reluctantly agreed to fix it, but on her time. The hair was so bad, it rendered friends and family speechless.... that is until they began heckling me. My hair looked like day time poll dancer hair, mixed with grunge groupie, and a side of homeless. I avoided mirrors and had a hat on all weekend. So, Saturday morning at 3 AM I was trolling Yelp looking for someone to fix this mess. And there was the Velvet Monkey Too. I scoped out their website and saw some pretty dramatic transformations and figured they might be able to help. I made the appointment for Monday, trying to explain how bad it was to the receptionist. On Monday, hat and sunglasses on, I entered Velvet Monkey Too and the mad skills of Allessa took me from homeless hot mess to just Haute. Luckily, I'm very aware that there was only so much that could be done. Allessa counseled me and suggested a chocolate brown to hide the Ronald McDonald hue. She worked in the color, did a glaze and talked to me about the next steps. During the process she was honest and wonderful. She is truly passionate about what she does and wants you to look your best. Hair is a canvas and she is an artist. After 3 hours, my drab and frightening do was transformed into chocolate waves of sophistication. Thank you so much Velvet Monkey Too and Allessa!!! Had my first visit to Velvet Monkey Salon Too based on Yelp reviews. I was easily able to make an appointment online. You can link it to your facebook account (which I know not everyone likes, but I don't mind for services like this) and it can store your upcoming and past appointments. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door, and the lady went back to let my girl know I was there. That seems like it should be a no-brainer, but I've been to some salons where nobody really acknowledges you, you're just supposed to know where to go. So I appreciate being greeted! I had Britt for my appointment. She was great! I'm working on growing my hair and bangs out, so really I just needed to trim off the ends. She asked questions about what I wanted, but also about how I usually style my hair and what my goal is. She was very thorough getting to know me and my hair. I really appreciated that! My total with tip for shampoo/cut/dry/style ended up being around $50, which is a little high. But, I don't mind paying that much when I get a good quality cut AND great service. I have been seeing Estrella, the owner of Velvet Monkey for about a year - she is fantastic on a number of levels. She is a very talented hairdresser. My hair is process complex and when I moved to OKC I did a lot of research to find someone. Estrella comes very highly recommended. She communicated with me before my first appointment about the process and was super nice and genuinely concerned. Estrella is customer focused. She is constantly asking for and implementing customer feedback - as a result, my appointments are booked out for me, I get text reminders and I feel that feedback that benefits VMs clients is quickly put in place. Finally, Estrella is incredibly likeable and very ethical. My son saw another stylist at VM and he left to start his own salon. When I called - VM informed me that he had left and offered his new phone number so my son could continue to see him. This is the first time I have encountered a salon who passed on the info. Wow. The atmosphere is fun and welcoming, all ages, all types, all kinds of people. The people are nice, all the stylists ask what you want, take the time to understand and confirm that's what you want before anything. If they cannot do something, they will not say they can, they will explain the damage that will occur and ensure the integrity of your hair is kept. But the multi-hour wait for a simple haircut while I watched person after person sit in the chair and show the "artist" a cell phone photo of some soccer/hipster celebrity wore me out and I ventured toward a beacon of appointments and quick turnaround. I am fortunate to have found Velvet Monkey. Yes they are a full service salon that offers dozens of things I will never use. But make no mistake- they do great haircuts here. I had been wanting an ombre, but got Preggo & decided to wait until I had my baby, so you better believe I was excited about getting my hair done after almost a year. I checked into the salon & Dusty came out, very professional, great first impression. I explained what I wanted & she listened & let me know what she could achieve. I appreciated her honesty & her advice on how to do it so my hair would still be healthy overall. The result was a beautiful ombre that I completely loved! Not happy. The color did not hold and after my first shampoo at home 72 hours later, I have exactly the same hair color that I walked in with. While she told me that it would probably fade...she also told me that when it did fade that it would NOT be blond. It's blond. I will not be back. It was a waste of money. After conducting thorough Yelp research of salons in the area, I settled on Velvet Monkey Too - and I am so glad I did! I made an appointment online through their website, which was super quick and easy to use and got an appointment for the same day with Britt. Headed over after work and sat down within 5 minutes of walking in the door. Really funky decor and not your run of the mill, cookie cutter salon - which I really appreciate. And now for my stylist: Britt. From start to finish, this girl was AMAZING. She spent ample time with me talking through exactly what I wanted and inspecting the (admittedly horrendous) current state of my hair. After the initial cut, we went about 3 rounds of slight adjustments here and a little more off the front here and POOF! I had a flawless new cut that I absolutely adore! She also gave me great advice about limiting the amount of heat styling I do per week and the benefits of using dry shampoo instead of incessantly washing and drying and straightening daily.
