I had an appointment just to have a haircut. Due to traffic and construction in Edmond, I was going to be 5 minutes late. I called 2 miles away 2 minutes before my appointment time to let them know, but the stylist, Melony, canceled my appointment because she scheduled my appointment short so she couldn't even give me 5 minutes. I wonder since she didn't schedule me a full appointment, would I have to pay full price. There are tons of places to get your hair cut in better locations for the same price and quality. read more

Requested for a wash, trim, and style. Tim started on my hair starting with brush out my hair and we went to the washing station. It felt like he put a glob of product on my head and just rubbed it around and rinsed. When we got back to the chair his hands were trembling and that made me nervous when he started cutting my hair. I asked for it to be cut to my collarbone area but he cut off to my hair to my shoulder length. And he didn't even ask how I wanted it to be styled. He just used a blow dryer and my hair was just a frizzy mess. The ambiance was unique. Overall I do not think I will be back noted recommend this place to anyone. read more

I loved the color rinse it looked soft and (almost) everyone in the salon seemed nice, but it wasn't until I got home I fully realized this was WAY more than one inch off of the length (I had long hair before and yes mine is thick so I k it was not going to be just like the picture) but it looked nothing like it. My daughter even said it was a bad haircut, (in the car.) The thing is the lady repeated "one inch" more than once. I would have definitely rather had it really uneven than like this. read more

I chose Tristan as my stylist based on pictures she posted of her work on Instagram. I came in with silver-ish hair with a blue hue. Asked to strengthen the silver and get rid of brassiness. She focused on removing the blue, chose not to bleach my naturally black hair and simply applied a toner unto my ends. She claimed that would lighten it enough to get me back to silver. When she was done, my hair was brown/copper. I texted her letting her know of my dissatisfaction and her response was "I never promised you silver... if you want you can come back in and I can try bleaching your hair if you want"... ummm, why wasn't that done to begin with?? I was so disgusted by her lack of ownership and her attitude about it at that. Any other stylist would've aimed to make it right. This lady instead blocked me on Instagram and washed her hands. Guess she was too embarrassed to confront the situation. A week later I went to another stylist to fix what Tristan had done and by simply doing baby highlights on my hair AND BLEACHING IT, got me back to a beautiful silver color. Needless to say, I won't be returning and wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

I came in to get an ombre with Kara Moss. After showing her a picture of what I wanted, she explained that instead of an ombre, it was a balayage style. What I got was none of the two. The color came out wrong, and I had weird bleach spots close to my scalp (see attached picture). Kara promised I could come back and she'd fix it (since I was getting my hair done for my wedding) and gave me her card. I called and texted to schedule a fix. Kara never replied or returned my calls and texts. I paid her the full $150 and even added on a 35% tip because she promised to fix it. If I was a difficult customer, I'd understand her hesitance to return my calls. But I was civil, honest, came in with a picture of what I wanted, and tipped her well. I chose this salon since it seemed well-rated and respectable. I'm walking away from this experience feeling disappointed and cheated. Pick any hairdresser aside from Kara Moss. read more

I show up to my appointment with a minute to spare (because I wait until the last possible second to do all of my errands). Jessica was finishing the do of a younger boy (and she was so sweet to him and his mom!), and continued to check on me while I was waiting. My experience at velvet monkey was sadly absolutely horrible. The woman who cut my hair was very personable and kind, and I enjoyed my conversation with her. However, I went in asking for the first photo shown, and then my hair came out looking like the second photo. I really trusted my stylist to give me a nice and easy cut, but instead I can out with an uneven, messy, and embarrassing haircut. Not to mention the fact that I paid 70 dollars for the cut. I had to go to ANOTHER salon to get it fixed, and thank goodness they could because I was legitimately embarrassed to leave my house with the hair cut. Never going back. read more

I've been having my hair done here for a few years now. The environment is fantastic. I love the mural on the wall, the hanging succulents, and their choices in music. Environment is so important when you're there for a half day at a time! It's also very convenient to set up the appointment online. The trick is picking the right options, but they can always clarify if you call. You can search for the stylist of your choice, or just first available appointment, or appointments on specific dates. Speaking if searching for you stylist, I recommend Erin Loomis. I lucked in to her being assigned to me on my first visit, and she does great work. Never rushes though the appointment, offers great ideas, and the result is always great! She's also not pushy about sales, which is very nice. Highly recommend. read more

I'm new to Oklahoma City and went to Janet in January for a hair cut. I was pleased with the cut. I thought the salon was a little stiff. I made another appointment for March 18 at 6:00. I was late because there was absolutely no parking.. took me over 20 minutes to find a spot and then had to walk to the salon. The receptionist said I was too late and had to reschedule. I was going out of town for a wedding and it was going to be impossible. Janet never came over to speak with me to see why I was late. I called this morning to speak with the manager and was told that the owner absolutely wants the shop closed at 7pm and that was the rule.. REALLY. This location has moved to the charming Plaza District on NW 16th St. I'm waiting to give it 5 stars after a second visit. I went once to the NW 23rd location to shop their vintage selection and was really pleased with both my finds and the prices. They had a spectacular grand opening for their new location, complete with a Rockabilly Fashion Show. I went to get a haircut yesterday, basically the same cut I've been getting for a year or so, but the difference was that the stylist (Mazey) listened and gave me exactly what I wanted and added a few things that made it even better. THAT is what a stylist is *supposed* to do. The music is fun, and the stylists seem to actually like their jobs. The vintage clothes are still rocking, and the prices are unbelievable. The hairdresser was really nice, but you could tell he was extremely distracted and rushing. He must have been in a hurry. In 2009, the original Velvet Monkey Salon & Vintage Boutique moved from its location on NW 23rd Street to the Plaza District on 16th after two arduous years of renovations on the historic State Ice Building transforming 3700 square feet of this historic monolith into a funky and eclectic salon, vintage boutique and loft-style living quarters. Estrella's definitely got some chops when it comes to cut & colors. I have never left unhappy plus months later I still like my cut & color - definitely the mark of great talent when the work has holding power. Estrella isn't the only one there who has talent at the Velvet Monkey; she surrounds herself with a talented crew. Everyone who works there has got skills judging from a fashion show she had a few months ago where each Monkey (her affectionate term for the employees) featured 3-7 hairstyles & outfits on the models. Being that I'm creeping hard upon my middle 30s, I finally decided to see what a $30 dollar haircut was all about. Pleasantly surprised. After my 1st visit to Velvet Monkey a couple weeks ago, I immediately rebooked for today to see Bailey again. The environment is super fun, and she cuts a good looking head of hair. I've only recently (1 year) started keeping hair long enough that it doesn't require very regular trims - which is part of the reason I decided to start paying for a good cut. Also, Bailey unjudgingly (should be a word) helped me step up my hair product game to a level commensurate with the quality of her cuts. It's not cheap, but as usual - you get what you pay for. My color is perfect and although I was a little nervous about it being too bright, but it's perfect, and I'm so glad I trusted her. The cut is also INCREDIBLE. I never used to wear my hair down, and now I can wear it down everyday. After the color, she trimmed my bangs. I have straight across bangs and I'm typically super scared of others messing them up- so much so that I normally just cut my bangs myself. After talking to her while doing the color, she built up my trust to allow her to trim my bangs. And let me tell you- she cut them Exactly. How. I. Asked. The perfect length, texture, everything.
