This has become my go-to hair salon whenever I need a cut. I came for the first time right after salons opened again during the pandemic. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The location is good and the price for a haircut is pretty reasonable. Oftentimes salons in NYC charge $90+ for a women's haircut, but here you can get one for $75. Ruthie is the best! She cuts my hair each time. I've only gone three times but she remembers me right away and we strike up our conversation from where we left it. She's extremely nice and welcoming. I NEVER let anyone touch my hair...like any smart woman you find someone you love and pray they never leave. Thank God I found Ruthy when I moved to NYC! She is amazing! I came to her for the first time with some ratchet highlights and she was able to fix it all up for me. I had an appointment with Ruthie on Friday that has me never wanting to step into another salon unless it's the nearby kids salon my daughter goes to. The place is clean and very welcoming. I usually have a problem with salon workers sitting me under the drier too long and my hair feeling dried out the next day but Ruthie took one look at my texture and knew going straight from the sink to a blowout was best for me. 2 days later I've applied no products to mg hair and it's still perfect. Karen is an excellent manicurist and pedicurist; she knows how to do nails right! Her job is my most favorite out of all the nail salons I have tried in NJ & NYC. She is highly skilled, friendly, welcoming and sweet. She was such a pleasure to be around! She started off by removing my previous gel pedicure with solution and aluminum foil wrapped around (something I probably couldn't do by myself at home, plus I am horrible at painting my own nails). Overall, the combined gel mani & pedi took between 1-2 hours for the entire service, but the environment was very comforting for a Saturday. I got the gel manicure and pedicure done and with a lavishing rose pink color. The pedicure came with a light massage with lotion towards the end, along with having them soaked in warm water. The lotions smelled wonderful and reminded me of a tropical, Hawaiian paradise. My nails still look amazing after about a week... I can expect them to last up to a month! I hope to be back again by the Fall time :-) read more

My haircut with Maribel came out amazing. I had heard she was great with all kinds of hair styles so thought I'd give it a whirl with my long, thick hair. I'm guilty of not getting my haircut often enough and blowdrying too often, so my ends are often very dry or split. Maribel took one look at my hair and understood that it needed a serious cleanup, but would not sacrifice the length. As someone who always has some layers, my hair often looks short post haircut, but my locks look long and healthy for the first time in a long time. I was also surprised to learn that my hair was uneven lengths on both sides, meaning my last stylist (who I paid MUCH more on) didn't do such a great job. The best thing was I had a wedding that evening so she blew it out amazingly and then pinned it up so my locks would be fresh and bouncey at wedding time. I can't tell you how gorgeous this blowout came out. Glad to know I now have a place to go for that as well (and reasonably priced)!!! There is also something very nice about going to someone who has been in the neighborhood for years and had opened her salon on her own. This woman-owned business is a little gem. Much as I hate to cheat on my Rodney, mama's hair was in need of some professional help and couldn't fly the 3,000 miles to SF. The glowing reviews of Velvet Roses persuaded me, and I was able to snag an appointment with the owner, who was able to take me at 9:00 am since I had a flight to catch that afternoon. Although I was 15 minutes late, she imediately put me at ease with coffee and sympathy. Although I just needed a basic color touchup and cut, she did a great job with my hair, cleaning up the ends and taming my unruly bangs. Although I can only afford to get my hair did at a proper salon a couple of times a year, I always consider it a huge treat when I'm able to plop myself into a Velvet Roses' chair. Melissa, the stylist I was lucky enough to be paired up with is fantastic. She works wonders on my very textured, wavy-but-not-curly hair and always takes great care to cut my layers and bangs with precision. I was really impressed that after I hadn't been in for nearly a year that Melissa not only remembered me, but still had notes about my specific dye and style. Seriously, Melissa is the truth! Disclaimer: this is a review of a haircut I got almost two years ago. But I haven't had a proper haircut at any hair salon since. For one, it took nearly a year for my hair to reach shoulder length after the drastically wrong chop, and two, it just traumatized me that much. I wanted to like this place. Even back then, it had mostly glowing reviews. Plus, it's a local business, and I always try to support local businesses. I was looking for an edgy haircut and this seemed just the place. In my gut, I knew this could've been a bad idea. Look, I'm Asian. Asian hair stylists know how to cut Asian hair best. But I was looking to try something different anyway, so I thought, how bad could it be? Well, I was wrong. The place was friendly, and the stylist was really caring. I could tell she wanted me to like the haircut. And I still tipped her very well. It's just that I did my homework and I brought several pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like. But it just didn't turn out the way it should have. I left smiling because I really didn't want to offend her, but tragically, I regretted it for the next six months. In the end, lesson learned. Disclaimer: I wasn't able to get a haircut, so my rating is based on my other experience. I think it would be helpful for them to add to their Yelp page that they are by appointment only, or have a phone number that forwards to the employees. I waited outside for 15 minutes, from 10:15-10:30. The door was locked, the lights were off. A stylist came in at 10:30 and was apologetic but said she already had a client coming in. The other stylist would not be in until 11:15, meaning I would be waiting, in total, an hour before getting a cut. I know there's no reason for the employees to be there right at open if they do not usually get walk-ins that early, or they do not have a regular coming in. But as a customer who walked very far to find out I need to go elsewhere, it would have been nice for someone to answer the phone when I called twice at 10 and 10:05 to know there was no reason for me to waste my morning walking over. read more

If you're looking for a hidden salon gem in Williamsburg, this IS the place. I've poured over tons of reviews and sampled a number of salons in The Burg and in the East Village, but my "look" never really came together until I went to Velvet Roses. Originally, I wanted to get my hair done with the owner, b/c she has such great mentions on Yelp, but was told that their new stylist MELISSA would be the girl for me. And she DEFINITELY was, and then some... Melissa is not only extremely friendly, easy-going and engaging, but she's absolutely amazing with hair. An artist from start to finish. I like that she walked through my summer hair ideas with me and really understood the long-layered cut I was going for, making suggestions here and there, interpreting my ideal cut into words and techniques. She really has a vision and I appreciate that. (I think it comes from the fact that she does a lot of really great editorial work on the side.) Plus, she'll even give you a play by play as to what she's doing during the cut so you're not nervous in the chair. It's a great experience working with her. I've been to Melissa twice now (once for cut and once for color) and have also taken a friend with short hair that needed a major transformation and Melissa just nailed our new looks both times! We both have gotten many great compliments on our hair, and I plan on sending as many of my friends out to Melissa as possible. But seriously, you can't go wrong with anyone at the salon. I've seen a ton of cool chics walk out of there with great looking dos from all the stylists. Who are all so very nice! They also have a full time manicure/pedicure/eyebrow specialist who seems quite popular too. All in all, this place is just a great neighborhood salon. The Burg needs more places like this. One of my biggest anxieties in moving to New York was having to find a new hairstylist. Call it pathetic, call it vain... call it what you will, but experiencing a haircut disaster will do that to ya. I'm quite selective in who I let cut this coif of mine and it was years before I found the right people back in California. Who knew how many mediocre cuts I'd have to pay for before I found the right stylist? Luckily for me, my first salon "gamble" was Velvet Roses and I won't have to take my chances with anyone else. I tried to schedule with Maribel since she is the owner and there are so many glowing reviews about her. However, I got scheduled with Ruthie because she often works on shorter hair lengths like mine. My anxiety flared up again. I took a big gulp and hopped on the L to Velvet Roses. My fear quickly dissolved upon meeting Ruthie. What I really liked about her was that she asked me several questions. To me, this translates to a genuine interest in giving the customer exactly what she wants. I could tell she understood that I'm trying to grow my hair out, but don't want to sacrifice style in doing so. I'll be honest: when I saw the amount of hair on the floor, I freaked out. It wasn't until after Ruthie blew it out that I saw she had retained most of my length. It was just shorter in the back, to keep it fun and edgy. This was a compromise to myself -- which we had discussed prior to her taking any scissors to my hair -- in order to keep my hair as long as possible without having boring, one-length locks just sitting on my head. In short, Ruthie was a doll and I'd be happy to see her again. She explained everything she was doing to my hair, which made each step truly comfortable. When I pointed out something I wanted tweaked after she finished the cut, she understood what I was saying and fixed it to my liking. So I got to read, deep condition and observe a piece of Billyburg in motion. This was the most productive I'd been in d a y s. I went because I really needed a haircut to tide me over until I get a fancy pants expensive one for one of my best friend's weddings in late Feb. I think this might be my new routine. This salon was recommended to me by a friend whose hair looks amazing! I went in with very curly, shoulder-length hair hoping that I could get my hair straightened without it feeling weird. Well, Maribel is absolutely wonderful... After a delightful shampoo and conditioning session, she rolled my hair and put me under the dryer for an hour or so. So, until yesterday I hadn't had my hair cut by a professional since 2011 because I'm somehow less terrified of my own hack jobs than I am of a bad haircut from a stranger. Due to sheer nervousness, I probably gave an overabundance of instruction on what to do with my hair. My stylist (I will never remember a name, ever, of anyone) listened attentively, but also importantly didn't listen on a key part: the length. My cut ended up a couple inches shorter than I was expecting, but as soon as I got a chance to run my fingers through it and mess it up I knew it was the right length for me. It's the cutest! Ruthie is amazing! I never leave her chair disappointed. I first came to her a while ago after I got an ombré done at Europa and my hair was falling out in chunks. We decided cutting my hair was the best option so that I could have healthy hair. This place is such a hidden gem! I really should have written this review 4 years ago, but kept forgetting. Maribel is incredible and actually listens to your requests unlike the majority of stylist in this city that just do whatever they feel like to your head, then charge you $200. I like to keep my long, wavy hair very simple, with very little layering and long, side swept bangs. I had an unfortunate experience at a little hipster salon on Leonard prior to discovering Velvet Roses, where the stylist literally spent 20 minute critiquing my hair and face, all while trying to sell me overpriced products. No thank you. The service is nothing like that at Velvet Roses! Maribel is the sweetest and the prices are incredible. Velvet Roses totally makes it right. Saw Melissa for hair color about 7 weeks ago, and am calling to see her again tomorrow. Was amazingly positive experience, she colored the roots and added highlights, and after we washed the hair and looked the whole thing just looked too brown. The red highlights barely showed. Most hairsalons would send you on your way and say something like....call me if you want a touch-up, when you're not happy. They're hoping you'll simply go away. But NO, Melissa offered to put blond highlights in for free, and redo the red with a stronger color. Right then. It turned out fabulous, have gotten so many great compliments. I came here at the end of July to get my balayage touched up/fixed. I had gotten a balayage at a different salon but wasn't fully satisfied. I happened to find Sam on Instagram and fell in love with her work. Sam was the sweetest and kindest stylist I've ever had (in fact, the entire staff was super sweet). She listened and gave me exactly what I wanted. She took her time in order to give me the tiniest and most precise detailed babylights and dimension that I had always dreamed about having, all while giving me tips on how to keep my hair healthy. I'm so grateful to have stumbled upon this salon a few days ago. I knew I wanted some sort of color treatment - balayage, ombre - I didn't really know since I am new to coloring my hair. Long story short, I walked out of an appointment at another salon yesterday because they were really rude and didn't seem to possess the understanding to be consultative in this process. I called Velvet Roses an hour before they closed, no appointment, and Ruthie was a godsend. She graciously took me in just before closing and worked on my hair for 3 hours getting me to the ashy/blonde look I wanted (from very dark) and a nice curly cut. I went here on the recommendation of a friend and, of course, the recommendations from all of you! Had my long hair cut by Ruthie--she did a great job. I'm super low maintenance and my hair can air-dry just right now without me having to do much with it. Everyone at the salon was super friendly!
