I wanted to wait a few days before updating this review, to make sure that I was being completely rational and not emotional..... I went back to Monica's two days ago to color and press my natural hair. I have never colored my hair before, but I wanted a change and I bought the yelp deal ($50 for $75 worth of services) so I figured, why not?! Rather than retell a long story, I will strongly advise ASKING THE PRICE OF YOUR SERVICE TO THE STYLIST not, I repeat NOT the assistant, the STYLIST, prior to having anything done. I was told by the assistant color would be $25, and then later charged $150 total for the press and color. Granted, I had two colors done (maybe this is why) but I'm not sure and nothing was said to me until it was all done. However prior to starting any coloring, I specifically asked the assistant, HOW MUCH IS A COLOR and she told me $25. not $25 and up, not $25 depending on the color, just $25. Nonetheless, I love my hair, I am satisfied, I just don't like feeling tricked or scammed out of money. Especially when I could have come better prepared to pay. It was made plain to me that customer service, or retaining customers wasn't a priority here. Also, despite my experience, I STILL referred a friend to the salon.......only to hear that I was the topic of th discussion. "How could she think it was $25" as if I was some moron, hmmm well I was TOLD it was $25, that's why. And it's not nice to discuss customers in front of others, you never know who knows who..... So while I contemplated going back, because the appointment was on time, convenient location, and I liked my hair, I can't have people in my hair that I don't respect...... Came for some braids( natural hair) which were a decent $65, but they do so much more such as wash & silk press, ponytails, etc. decent prices and the staff are cool. It is hard to come by great stylists that tend to natural hair and I thought I had found my hair " home " here in Brooklyn. This thought was short lived after my last experience at this establishment. The atmosphère is great, customer service is great, but my actual service was a disaster. I was charged $100 just for a blowout and trim. My roots were not fully straight and my hair frizzed up as SOON as I got home. To make matters worse, an entire chunk of my hair in the back was burnt out by the pressing comb. This was the only place I had gotten my hair straightened recently so I know for a fact it happened here. I am so disappointed about this experience and even more upset that I now have to try and grow back an entire section of my hair. Never again. read more

So I recently moved to NYC from San Diego a couple months ago, and was in need for new beautician -- I couldn't find a salon that had an open availability on a Saturday... Finally, I found Monica's Hair Salon on Yelp, and was able to make an appointment at 10am that Saturday :) Oh, was I very happy!! Ok -- I arrived at 10am, and one of the ladies started taking my extensions out ASAP, (I was pleased). 30 min later she finished, and then I was off for a deep shampoo and conditioning... around 11 am My hair was washed and ready for the extensions to be put back in.. BUT, NO, WAIT! The lady who I scheduled my appointment with was too busy with someone else for nearly 2 hours! So, I waited, and waited until Lorraine was finished.. Meanwhile, another trinidadian lady is braiding my hair, and adding the extensions in my hair... NO WORD; she was not friendly, and did a horrible job with sewing the extensions in!!!! :( Around 2:30, Lorraine started working on my hair; mind you, she rushed the entire thing! By 4:30, my hair was finished... WOW, 6.5 hours later! SERIOUSLY, just to put extensions back in my hair?!!!?!?!? It would have taken a professional beautician 3 hours max to complete the same appointment... Not even a week later, and my tracks are loose. *Everyone in there gossiped far too much about drama, "Sorry, I do not care if black people are lazy and don't exercise; that's their individual damn business! I came here to get my hair done at a reason time!" *They weren't professional NOTE: If you want to walk out of a hair salon, feeling like a million bucks, DO NOT go to Monica's Hair Salon! And I look at her with adoring eyes and silently thanked Monica's for making me into the cutie in my new avatar. I was really late for my appointment due to some misunderstanding on my part but they got me going pretty quickly as a walk-in. I signed in on the pink sheet. Got a crazy stimulating wash ad deep condition from Kenesha. And even though there was a miscommunication between what I wanted and what I was having done, I am more than pleased with the result of a fabulous haircut created by Lorraine. They specialize in natural hair but most of the ladies in the shop Saturday morning were getting weave put in or a touch up on their perms. This is also a vendor of Carol's Daughter products. Love that! It's really coveniently located a couple blocks down from Brooklyn Museum of the 2/3. So after getting your hair done you can go check out the latest exhibit, have a photo shoot in the Botanical Gardens, or just go frolicking in Prospect Park. They try hard to run like clockwork in here but it can get a little backed up so make an appointment and set aside a few hours just in case. Nonetheless there's no exclusivity or pretension when you walk inside. The staff works really hard to learn your name and make it so that ou want to go back over and over again. My wash, blow dry, flatiron, condition and cut came out to a measly 77 bucks. An all-around great place. Pleased with the clean look of the place and the friendly, smiley staff. This is not a place to bring your little chocolate bundle of joy to get her hair done. They don't allow children here. Love Monica's! Very weird that I have not written a review about this place until now. I've visited this salon off and on for the past 6 years and my experiences have been great. Lorraine is my stylist and also the owner. She does a great job on my hair and I always recieve compliments. She has done my weaves, short hair cuts and has nursed my natural hair to health. During my last visit, I asked her if she thought I should do another weave or wear my natural hair, and she told me to take care of my natural hair. I appreciated her honesty since weaving is more costly than styling my real hair. It is rare to find a stylist who truly cares about the health of your hair. Even while weaving, my hair is never too tight and I do not lose hair in the process. You can ask Lorraine a million and one questions about hair care and she always has an answer.Her product knowledge is THE BEST out of all the hairdresser I have ever had. She knows what works for what type of hair and gives you tips on how to care for your hair at home. She is also VERY patient and makes you feel welcomed even if you did not visit her in a long time. The technicians are EXCELLENT especially Tiffany who has worked with Lorraine for the 6 years I have been her client. She does an excellent job relaxing, prepping and washing your hair. I went back to Monica's to get my hair weaved up for my wedding, but i wanted to let some hair out since full head weaves look like a wig. Problem was that I needed to be a texturized at least to make my natural hair blend. So after relenting to my stylist who kept up with her lie of " a texturizer isn't a perm" I relented. Though she packed in a lot of hair, it looked pretty damn natural! I did have to fix the frizz on the top though, but after swimming in the ocean and partying at my reception, that baby held tight! Amazing. There is no other word. This has been my third time to Monica's (twice for a weave and this time for a relaxer) and I finally said enough is enough, I need to yelp my review! They seem to do everything here. I've seen stylists working with relaxed hair, natural hair, locks, weaves and even male hair cuts. Very versatile salon. Lorraine is a great stylist and is skilled in no matter what you ask her to do with your hair. She's also really great with explaining what she's doing and recommending how best to maintain. Rachel is such a sweetheart! I don't think I've ever met a more knowledgeable and conscientious stylist. She is gently with your hair, actually asks what it is you normally do to your hair and gives advice for care and maintenance. She was the best part of my experience today. It can get a bit pricey but really, for the care and effort they put into your hair, the prices are reasonable. I've never had a problem with waiting when it came to my appointments. I like this salon. The stylists and the owner are pretty friendly. Their side conversations are quite hilarious, which I can appreciate, and the prices aren't outrageous like some other nearby salons. I've been to the salon twice - once to get a weave, and again to get the weave out and to get a cut and style. I was satisfied both times. The second time, they assumed I wanted a press, in addition to a flat iron and style, because my hair was natural. It ended up pretty bone straight and flat. Some girls might like that, but I don't. P.S. The girl who pressed my hair definitely burned the h*** out of my forehead and left ear. Didn't know how bad it was until I left. (I even have the pics to show the aftermath that I woke up to the next morning.) That said, you will leave with good-looking hair. So I actually visited Monica's hair salon in Jan- March of 2009. The first time I went, I loved the way Lorraine did my hair (even though the shampoo girl did the shampooing, blowdrying and pressing). Lorraine did the cut and style(usually curled with a hot curling iron) and I was very pleased and didn't mind paying the $85. The second time I went, it seemed the like a different place. My hair was shampooed, blowdryed and pressed as usual, but when I went for my cut and style, Lorraine was on the phone the entire time while doing my hair. I was a bit peeved, but as my hair was nice once I left, so whatevs. I went home started fingering my hair and I noticed several pieces of my hair were EXTREMELY short, like whole areas where the hair was shorter than the rest, consistent with a burn from a curling iron. Needless to say I never returned. Its been two years and some parts of my hair are still uneven, though catching up. I have not been to a salon since. I typically African braid my hair or I flatiron and trim it myself (thanks youtube). I really was excited about liking this place esp since other yelpers said great things about them, but I can't say I would recommend Monica's to any of my friends :( read more

My hairstylist was BeBe. She was professional, honest, informative and great. She did a full sew in 27 piece for me. I wasn't sure what kind of hair I needed for the style because this was my first 27 piece. Even though I didn't have the hair for the long bang I wanted, BeBe slayed my hair. I also forgot to bring a net for the sew in and I learned they provide those. I think I'll be going to Monica's for all my future hair appointments. The atmosphere is wonderful as well. Their was no wait and Ceritta blow dried, pressed, and flat ironed my hair to perfection. She also gave me a fabulous cut so my hair fell perfectly into place no matter what I did to it. Lorraine, the owner, did my hair and I think she did a relatively good job. She was a little bit on the aggressive side and I believe she cut my hair (I found a noticeably short piece of hair in the middle of my hair of all places and I'm not sure who to blame...) Pros: The head stylist, Lorraine, was nice and knowledgable. ...I discovered this when she saved my hair from total destruction under the hands of the other stylist. Cons: The other stylist, the one that took me when I arrived, ruined my experience at this salon. I wanted a touch up, so she proceeded to apply a perm, Mizani Butterblend, which normally works wonderful with my hair. But she proceeded to apply it extremely slowly, circling the edges of my head first, then from back to front a few strands by strands. Within minutes it felt like someone poured acid on the edges of my head. I felt pretty upset and complained about the extreme burning sensation in the front and sides of my head. She thought it was unusual for someone to burn so quickly, even when I told her I needed a light perm, not regular or super, since my hair is thin. ...Honestly, I think she used super, for whatever reason I don't know.. I was close to tears. I asked her to please wash it out, even if one half of my hair had no perm in yet. I became terrified of my hair disintegrating under this agent, which I expressed to her. After the washing, the head stylist took over, maybe seeing how freaked out I was. She began to apply the rest of the perm as a true professional, really quick. I honestly think her assistant never spent one day in cosmetology school...... Even I could have done a better job, even though I rather not prefer to handle such a harsh chemical. Later on, they told me the charge was $85, a $10 dollar increase from the $75price discussed on the phone. Huh? Anyway, even if this place is located in a pricey section of Crown Hight, close to Downtown Brooklyn, I honestly felt like I went to a salon in a crappy "hood" section of Brooklyn.. For this result, I should have just stayed in my own area and get a $20-$40 perm. Of course, I didn't want to play with such a harsh chemical, which happened anyway. So I sacrificed and put down big bucks for this. Today I have little scabs in each side of my head. read more

This is my first time going to Monicas after reading the reviews on yelp. They are great. The stylist Katrina is a wonderful young lady from California who has a great vibe. She answered every question I asked with patience and knowledge. She suggested what would be good for my hair and she did not try to push a bunch of expensive services on me. Say my hair ain't luxurious.... I felt like Katt Williams a la The P!mp Chronicles walking out of Monica's today. I shook my hair so many times I almost hurt myself. Lorianne is a miracle worker. I recently moved to Brooklyn from Atlanta and have been desperately searching for someone to do my natural hair. I'm VERY picky about how I want my hair done. And I don't like going to people who don't know how to deal with it. During my search I have been referred to MANY a Dominican salon. No disrespect to the Dominicans but I can blow dry my hair straight at the house. I need someone who's going to bust out the Marcel iron and get to the ROOT of my hair without blasting my hair with hot air imported directly from the bowels of Hell. After a very brief wait, I was shampooed, sat under the dryer and blown dry. Now came the crucial part: the straightening. Lorianne brought out the old school tools and went to work. She was attentive to my needs (I'd had a long day and it showed on my face) while maintaining professionalism. But most importantly, she pressed the H3LL out of my hair. When she took out the scissors for a much needed trim I immediately panicked like I always do. (Don't act like you haven't had a traumatic salon experience If you're brown, you've had one.) But Lorianne not only eased my scissor anxiety but she trimmed my hair into meticulously even layers. My hair looks and feels AMAZING!! I have an appointment next week at another salon but I'm going to go ahead and cancel it because I have found my salon and I have found my stylist. Now if you're excuse me, I'm going to go back to shaking my luxurious locks. Oh, one more thing...actually two. If you're used to Tay-tay and them doing you're hair for $30 don't expect that here. You get what you pay for and you have to pay for quality. This place is not overly priced but it's not a hood spot either. And they do not accept gratuity via credit cards.
