I cannot say enough good things about the people at Velvet Tailors! Not only did they do excellent work on my alterations in a reasonable time for a great price, the family who runs this business deserves to be recognized for their honesty and integrity. I inadvertently left my wallet in the dressing room and didn't realize it was missing until the following day. I had $350 cash and a couple hundred dollars worth of gift cards in the wallet. When I went back a few days later to see if anyone had possibly found and returned the wallet, they had it and everything was still in there just as I'd left it. I figured someone would have taken the money and thrown the wallet in the trash. Not these wonderful people. This is such a great alterations location! I took my bridesmaids dress in to get altered slightly and it got done very quickly and for a fair price. But that's not even the best part. The day I picked up my dress, I realized that I needed a different service done than what I asked and I was leaving for the wedding (which was in South Carolina) the next day. I called them right before they closed, explained my situation, and they fit me in and got the alterations done! And they didn't charge me extra for the hassle. I brought my favorite dress in to be made into a blouse (I had outgrown the bottom half). The dress was both high-quality and super hip, and I didn't want to lose that edgy, young feel, or the impeccable tailoring it already had. Velvet Tailors paid so much attention to detail. They worked on the lining, added side slits, shortened the zipper. The blouse is perfect. A very stylish top, just as chic and luxurious as when it was my favorite dress. A friend recommended Velvet Tailors and I was not disappointed to say the least. They are FABULOUS! I brought in three dresses to get altered before my trip to Mexico and they went above and beyond my expectations. Two of the dresses were bought from The Real Real as a final sale and the first dress originally looked like a Mumu with a point at the bottom. Laura and the team took it in and shaved off the point and it was a whole new dress when I tried it on. It had a shape and is such a cute dress now! The other one, I LOVED online, but when I tried it on, it was about 4 inches too small to zip up on the side over my chest area, so they recommended me finding a fabric as close to the bright pink color as possible (which I did) and I almost cried when I tried it on because it now fits like a glove and you cannot tell that it was tailored or that a different fabric was added. I've lived in Austin my whole life, as far south as William Cannon and as far north as Cedar Park. I've tried a ton of tailors all around town and Velvet is my favorite. They always do exceptional work, quickly, with great prices. And my favorite part is that they're always very upfront. I've brought some complicated pieces in and they're clear on what work will be done, if anything needs to be replaced (like zippers or buttons) and how much it will cost. No surprises. read more

A good tailor is a great person to have in your arsenal in this vast world of weird fitting clothing aka being older than 30... I found Velvet Tailors through yelp and took in a bridesmaid dress that needed several alterations. I am so happy with how it turned out! Not only did the tailor shorten the dress from floor length to knee length, she also turned it into a halter, added darts, and added this magic stitch in the back so that my bra doesn't show. Great price, nice employees. I had a strange request (the bride's request) for a bridesmaids dress slit to be altered and the bottom of the dress to be cut to my height. I told them I needed the dress in two weeks and they told me it would be ready in just 4 business days, wow! When I went to pick it up it was ready but they had completely sewed up the slit of the dress. This was no big deal, that's an easy fix and I still didn't need the dress for a week and a half. They told me I could come back in an hour, but I didn't want them to rush, so we agreed I would pick it up in two days. I went to go and pick it up (again) and they hadn't touched the dress yet and told me to come back in twenty minutes, again I didn't want them to rush so I said I would be back in three hours before they close. I went to pick up the dress a few hours later and they were still not finished. I finally said I would pick it up the next day. When I went before close the following day it was ready. It all got done with in my timeline and was a great job, I am only a little frustrated on how I had to keep coming back and it was not complete, but originally it was ready on time, they just made a mistake. The lady who greets you when you walk in was so nice to me. I really appreciated her customer service. All in all I would go back in the future, in hopes my situation was just an odd week for them. I do know it's a busy time of year for weddings, so I am giving them the benefit of the doubt. read more
