First and foremost, this place does not sell gelato. They sell ice cream and that should be clarified. They obviously bank on duping tourists and are quite successful at it. So if you would like ice cream, this is the place for you. But if you are in search of true, authentic gelato, steer clear. The main difference and one of the easiest ways to tell the difference between ice cream and gelato is the texture. When you see display cases piled high with fluffy mounds of "gelato", know that that is not gelato and that is ice cream that has been pumped full of air. I was recommended this place by a friend who came here previously on a trip to the trevi fountain. As a big ice cream fanatic, I had to try it. Entering inside the shop, there were a lot of people in line. I ordered a half strawberry half vanilla gelato for 4 euros. It came with a half cut cone on top. The first thing I noticed was that the underside of the cup is indented inwards and really it was much less gelato than it looked like. The gelato itself was delicious. The strawberry had a strong strawberry flavor. The vanilla tasted like real vanilla bean. The gelato was very very thick but not the creamy kind that is like ice cream. There was no cream taste to it at all. Overall, the gelato was better than I expected and very very tasty. Just like other places I've reviewed in Italy, the reason why it doesn't get a 5 star is that its another tourist trap. The cup contains much less than it looks. read more

I was hoping to find giolottis (everyone recommended it and it's supposedly well known) but we found this place first. It was such an adorable small business and the owner was so friendly and very passionate about people enjoying the food he loved so much. Our first gelato in Rome was from this lovely gelateria next to our hotel. I wanted the Italian experience so I tried the small pistachio. I also got to taste it first since I've never had pistachio ice cream and wasn't quite sure if I'd like it. There were little bits of pistachio throughout. The two young women working were kind and helpful. My son had the dark and regular chocolate at the next size up; he said it was "to die for". Mine was 2.50€ and his was 3€. If you're by the Trevi Fountain, avoid the tourist traps and come here! This gelato is on the creamy side, but what makes this gelateria stand out is the passion behind what they do. The older gentleman, who I assume is the owner, was very friendly and will give you tips on what flavors go well together. My husband got two flavors (can't remember which ones now), and he layered the flavors based on their flavor profiles. He even explained it to us while he was doing it. Most places don't care and will just take your order, but he clearly is passionate about his product. The gelato here was so good that I bought a second cone after finishing my first cone in the shop! The store is small and there are only 2 small benches, or you can take your cone to the Trevi Fountain. Pistachio is the flavor I get to compare gelaterias, and the pistachio here is one of my favorites. It's soooo creamy and has a nice toasted pistachio flavor...mmmm. read more

We dropped by Valentino Gelateria on our way to the Trevi Fountain due its ranking as the #1 gelateria in Rome on another review site. After sampling three flavors, I have to agree with the consensus on Yelp, Gelateria Valentino is pretty mediocre overall. The owner, Valentino, is an extremely outgoing and personable guy. He engaged us, asked us questions, took our picture even though we didn't really want him to, etc. He also gave us a business card and asked us to review his place. Okay, you asked for it buddy! The gelato looked good in the cases, but we ended up disappointed. The mint had a unappealing flavor extremely similar to toothpaste, the pistachio was over-sweet and without much character of a real pistachio nut. White chocolate was also bleh. Maybe we tried the wrong flavors? I don't know. We also were able to sit down (without being charged a fee!), which is like a special service in Rome. My feet appreciated it. The piccolo (small) cones were also extremely cheap - only €2. I wanted to like Gelateria Valentino, but we had a lot of really amazing gelato at other places around town. My very first gelato experience in Italy was at Gelateria Valentino. This place looked familiar, but I didn't know why. Then, I remembered a Mark Wiens vlog and this was one of the places that he went to. The time was about 10pm, so many of the flavors were gone. However, I went with my usual Pistachio and also Milk, or Fior di Latte. The pistachio was hands down the best pistachio I've ever had. You could really taste the pistachio flavor and for whatever reason, almost had a hint of chocolate. I'm not saying there was chocolate in there, but it seemed to have a little. Now, for the Fior di Latte, this was the first time I've had it. While I love sweets, I don't like things that are super sweet. I figure the milk was a good choice. And it was. I always assumed that Milk would taste like vanilla. No vanilla here. It just tasted like sweetened milk. If any of you has every had the original Kinder chocolate (or Riegel), then it tastes exactly like the filling. My girls had strawberry and the wife had Nocciola, which is Hazelnut. Both of those flavors are good, but I have to admit, I liked my flavors more. The place is small, but the service is excellent. I wasn't sure if it was appropriate to ask for samples, so I didn't. However, while enjoying our gelato on the benches inside, we noticed that he did give some samples. read more

In fact, it wasn't even close to being one of my favorites from the trip BUT the owner and employees are SUPER friendly and welcoming, and that's why this place deserves a good, solid 3 star rating. I realize gelato is very subjective and if you are in this very touristy area near the Trevi Fountain, then this is a great place to stop. You do NOT have to worry about getting the "tourist rip-off cone" that exists in some other places nearby. The gelato flavors are standard and the ice cream is good, not great. I tried the Fior di Latte and Hazelnut and my mom tried the Strawberry and Vanilla for 4 euro each. Fantastico! The older gentleman (I'm assuming the owner?) really took his time joking around with my mom and I and let us try anything we wanted. He also gave us some tips for saying no to the slew of peddlers selling bracelets, selfie sticks, etc. and avoiding pickpockets around the city. I'm a fan of Valentino Gelateria! It's just a short walk from the Trevi fountain and they have benches to actually sit!! After roaming the streets of Rome, my girlfriend and I needed a place to sit and rest in the heat. I can understand how it is normal to eat 2-5 gelatos a day!! I had a double scoop of the Mango and Lemon. The fruit flavored gelatos actually taste like real fruit, no artificial stuff. The prices are fairly reasonable considering that it is in a tourist area.
