Gelato place is located in the corner of Via di Porta Castello and Borgo Pio. Very nice service and ambience. This was a high tourist area so thats probably why it was a little more expensive than other places we visited. The flavors and creamy-ness was good, but the sizing was also smaller than other shops. The man who helped us was nice and spoke English. The other notable thing was that this gelato melted almost immediately. Maybe the freezers weren't cold enough? This is a small gelato shop with a couple solid flavors. It seemed to melt pretty fast but the mint gelato was strong and I would get it again. Potion sizes were a little less than normal, but it's also in a pretty touristy area. read more

We have been traveling in Italy with our daughter who is allergic to peanuts & treenuts. She has been begging to have gelato so we searched "nut free" gelato in Rome and this was the #1 spot. Although it is not "nut free", they make their own gelato (control of ingredients) and were super accommodating by offering to use a clean spoon, highlighted which gelatos were made first to minimize risk of contamination and then scraped away to ensure "fresh" (again reduced contamination risk). No issues...loved every bite...definitely stop while your visiting the Vatican!! read more

I came into L'Arena del Gelato last night (a Sunday) and it felt like I was walking straight into heaven. This place has a ton of different flavours of gelato to chose from and the winner on this night was the mint chocolate chip in a cone! For only a few dollars you could literally eat some amazing gelato and feel like nothing in the world matters. Perfection. As someone who struggles with severe peanut, and nut allergies, the owner Giuseppe went above and beyond to make sure I could experience some of Rome's finest gelato. Giuseppe was a kind and humble man who puts his heart into his business. Not only was the gelato delicious, Giuseppe took the time to explain their allergy and production protocols, and even provided me untouched flavors from the back that had no risk of cross contamination of my allergens. I usually avoid ice cream/ gelato places because of the worry of cross contamination, but that was not an issue here! I can't thank L'arena del gelato enough for being my gelato highlight!!! My daughter is allergic to nuts so almost every Gelato place in Rome is off limits. This is a family owned business. He controls his ingredients. He cleans the Machine between batches. We found it via Google under nut free Gelato Rome. Turns out he has nuts in some of gelato but it is kept separate. No artificial flavors. We took a 30 minute bus ride there 6 nights in a row. This is not the stuff you get in the tourist areas. It is made onsite. Take bus 40 or 62 to Transportina. Walk through the arches of the Vatican City wall. On the corner of the Piazza on the left. When I visited Italy this year, my food allergies (peanuts, treenuts, fish) were a major concern. A lot of places we visited were better with the food allergies than I expected, but finding safe Gelato, was hard. While in Rome on our last day, I found L'Arena del Gelato on Yelp. Someone else apparently had the same idea, as when I spoke to the owner he asked if I was the person who had called him earlier that day. When I spoke to the owner about my allergies, he was very helpful, and told me he made all the flavors himself. There were a few nut flavors, but the fruits were kept separate, so I had a split of Lemon and Mango. Both flavors were amazing, and tasted so real and flavorful. TL;DR: Owner made me feel very safe, and I would recommend to anyone visiting Rome. read more

First things first. I had my favourite gelato of Rome and possibly ever at this little gelateria near the Vatican. Pear/cinnamon and green apple were a great combo that was fresh and tart but not too sweet. It was perfect, and I'd eat this combo everyday. However, I found them skimpy on serving size and extras (like cream or dipped chocolate) compared to other gelaterias. Yeah yeah, gelato is the star of the show, and for that I'll give 4.5 big stars... But I would have been a ton happier with 50 percent more product! Still, I'd go back in a heartbeat.
