Let's start with I've been meaning to visit this library since bookstores and libraries everywhere are my favvvv. My last library visit was in Montecito and I adore that space. I walked across the Venice canals and then was greeted by an abundance of homeless encampments. I crossed over them and entered the front door. The smell of people not bathing immediately hits your nostrils. There isn't a singe seat or space available to sit anywhere, it's overrun by folks who basically charge their phones here, and have free heating and AC and a place to live. I attempted to digital card catalogue search. On a seemingly unattended computer. A homeless woman, sneared at me and said loudly, it's taken! On my way out, I headed to the restroom to wash my hands, the place has an unsanitary feeling. And a woman was basically bathing in there: washing her face and brushing her teeth. Guys it's basically a homeless shelter. It was a depressing and awful visit. Stay away if you can or visit the Santa Monica library! This place needs a clean up, ASAP! Sadly; Wish I could've stayed and read a chapter and enjoyed an environment of knowledge.

Beautiful library with an abundance of natural light - best feature! Nice, medium size. Well organized and clean. Cookbook collection is on the small side, but emphasizes immigrant, ethnic books which I love. Large parking lot. Security inside the library, but not intrusive. Friendly and walking around regularly to keep a safe feeling environment.

My usual branch is the one in Playa, although it's so small I usually have to come here or have the books I want delivered. But I couldn't wait so I tried this place out. It has its own parking lot. The front of the building had some jobs hanging out. The lobby has a lot of notices- bulletin boards and tables with fliers about what's going on. Nothing seemed interesting. It's dimly lit and desperately needs a renovation or at least a deep cleaning. The entire building reeks of pee. There is a section where you can buy $1 books. I did see a young girl putting up decorations to brighten the place. A librarian did ask me if I needed helped but then felt judged when she showed me where the book was. There's also a computer section but they seem germy. And a lot of couches and chairs meant for reading but it was mostly homeless looking people napping. It was hard to get to the sections since they were splayed out. While there is a lot of book (probably the only good thing about this) I don't really want to come back here. I wanted to sit and read in a cozy spot. But this place was just too gross. I ended up checking out right away and reading in my car until my next appointment. It's really not the place to spend an afternoon. But if you can handle it, it's decent to stop in and grab what you need.

This library is a bit small, but pleasantly quiet with a few nice wooden, round tables for reading or getting work done. The children's section is nice, not ideal for toddlers, but probably best suited for elementary through middle school, with a nice collection of children's literature. There is also quite an array of DVD's and music. There are some rough around the edges looking people here, but no one is talking out loud to themselves or bothering anyone, so all is good.

However, I have noticed that most visitors, who appear to be transient, spend their time either sleeping there or setting up their belongings, which can range from several bags to small carts, and then leave to hang out in front of the building or in the parking lot with others who are getting high. I understand that the library is small, so space is limited. Unfortunately, this creates a challenging environment for those of us who are trying to focus on our studies. The noise and disruption from people coming and going, coupled with the lack of available seating, make it difficult. Additionally, I have noticed that some of the vistors sometimes smell of alcohol or marijuana, and some appear to be tweaking out, which further detracts from the study atmosphere. My hope is that changes can be made for the safety of all visitors, especially children, as it may be confusing or scary for them to see such behavior. As an adult, I am aware of what is happening, but children may not understand. It would be beneficial if the library could implement some policies to ensure that the space is more conducive to studying, such as designated quiet areas or time limits on how long belongings can be left unattended. This way, everyone can enjoy the library as a resource without compromising its primary purpose as a place for study and learning.

The style is very neoclassical and it's painted in a soft pale blue and white. The exterior and size is welcoming and cute with a great location. I love the little park with benches just outside. The trees and lawn are always nicely groomed. The last time I visited here, all the purple flowers were in bloom outside and it looked lovely. It's in the heart of the vibrant Main Street shopping and dining district and only about two blocks from the beach. The original library building was built in 1918. The architecture is charming and its construction was funded by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. There is free WiFi and the library is open three days a week. The library has a more recent addition constructed in 1985 that contains children's and teen's book sections.
