Dates of stay: July 23 - 26, 2015
Do not let the pictures fool you. Yes, the setting is nice, the bathhouses are new, but there are a lot of issues:
1. I was overcharged. I booked months in advance at $35/night. I wanted to come a day earlier (Thursday) and the new rate was $55. Fine, no problem. Happy to pay the new rate for the extra day. What ended up happening was I was then retroactively charged the new rate for ALL nights including Friday and Saturday so had a charge for $55 and another for $40 ($20 extra per night). I called back several times between time of booking over the phone to the time I checked out to explain and request a refund. No success. The answer is "someone will call you back" or "I do not see anything." I'm going to dispute this with my credit card company instead of banging my head against a wall. Now that I think about this I get paid more than the time I've already invested in trying to resolve this with them directly, so if they need the $40 that bad, they can keep it. Note others who have left reviews here have also been overcharged. Watch your wallet!
2. Got lucky and spoke to Rich on the phone to try to resolve the issue above. Boy, was he a peach. Someone needs to go back to customer service school or be banned from answering the phone.
3. A day after our group checks into our sites, I get a vmail from Jim stating that they had overbooked themselves and we were told unapologetically to vacate one of our sites. For real???
4. 8:30am on Sunday, no toilet paper to be had in Bathhouse 3 on the ladies' side. If you're sold out and charging $55/night, you can make more frequent rounds on your golf cart to refill the dispenser so your guests don't have to bring their own essentials. Here's another thought, offer seat liners so folks don't use up all the TP to line the toilet seat, causing the TP to run out faster.
5. Went to pack out the trash and the recycle sheds looked like mini landfills. Garbage was overflowing and cheapened the feel of the place. Even the State Parks campgrounds manage their trash more effectively than this private campground, for half the price.
Some FYI:
1. Shower tokens are $2 each and can be purchased at the kiosk. That gets you a 5 minute hot shower. You can't use quarters.
2. The onsite camp store is very limited to small bags of chips, tampons and $11 bundle of light pine firewood that burns up in no time. Bring what you need. Otherwise, the closest major store is in Carmel.
3. We had sites 62 through 65, which were at the far end and walk ups. I'm not squeamish and fairly fit so it wasn't a huge issue to hike 1/4 mile up a steep hill with all my gear. Once there, it was private and quite nice as only 64 and 65 are at the end. If you get both sites, great, if you don't, you are your neighbor's Siamese twin as only a log separates the two sites.
4. There are winged maggots called "Big Sur" flies that come out as soon as the sun warms the air. They do not want your food or trash. In lieu, they want your warm, moist orifices. We were constantly swatting our heads to keep them from landing and laying their eggs in/on our eyes, nose, mouth and ears. Yes, I know this is camping so I'm not knocking the bugs and think it's silly for other Yelpers to complain about mosquitoes and the like, but wanted to throw this out there as we spoke to other sites who actually packed up a day early and left because of the fly issue. Smoke from your campfire seems to keep them at bay, so be prepared to buy lots of firewood or bring your own and hope you come when they allow fires. Otherwise, you'll be exiled to the safety of your tent.
5. If you want private bath time, use Bathhouse 1 and 2 as they are coed individual stalls, four total, with the ends being equipped with showers. Bathhouse 3 is segregated by gender equipped with toilet stalls in the front and shower stalls in the back.
6. The road around this campground is VERY hilly. If you bring bikes, you better be fit to climb more than an overpass, or you'll be walking your bike up a hill.
7. Jim (campground manager) and Lisa Atwood are pleasant. They did try their best to resolve the overcharge issue but were not equipped to do anything and had to refer me to Bernardo (office manager), who promised to call me back.
8. Lastly, Jim said they'd be raising prices again very soon. Maybe then, they won't have to overcharge on the down low and can just do it honestly.
My overall impression... I would not camp there again. The main reason being that you cannot pick your site, and many were on top of each other. In fact, some were arranged in such a way that you had to walk through the front of one site to get to yours. Granted, some were quite nice (spacious and more private), but you can't request those sites. I don't gamble, so I'm gonna pass on crappy campsite roulette. TERRIBLE VALUE. read more
