The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is cozy. The food is a standout in terms of taste and unique variety for this area. Would love to come back and try the other yummy- looking pastries and breakfast options.

NOTE: My review is for VL - "PRIOR TO" being bought out by CK ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wonderful French bakery and the best coffee in VT! This is my top 3 coffee spots in the Country. I arrived a little late 10:55am Sunday ( 5 min before their closing time). Most pastries had sold out. ++. Ambiance is minimalistic French bakery. Inside: a few large shared wooden tables and a tiny cafe bar against the wall with a couple of stools and a couple of lounge chairs by the windows. ~10-20 seats; Outside: a few cafe tables on the side walk patio ~ 6-8 seats. +++. Coffee and baked goods ( breads and pastry ) were superb. I tried the black buckwheat cake and macchiato. BBC was airily light and melted in my mouth like ice cones. It wasn't sweet but delicate and awesome! My macchiato foam was made with whole milk and was incredible - best I've had. +. Service was friendly and efficient. Cashier and the owner who was making coffee drinks were cheerful and helpful. This little bakery was busy and they were efficient. Definitely friendlier than Parisians and I didn't experience what many reviewers warned on their icy service. =. Price is high. My macchiato and a small 2" diameter cake was just under $6. But was worth it and I'll gladly pay for the fabulousness any time! +. Parking is street. (Free). This is a small town VT - parking is easy. They are open in the AM and dinner PM from Thursday to Sunday. Check their hours and may want to call before you arrive. Many proprietors keep hours unique to small town VT and different towns seem to have different days off. Bottomline, I'll be visiting Vergennes more specifically this Edible Fabulousness!!!

This is a mad-cute place to buy pastries. My then-newest friend Audrey had been itching to come down to Vergennes during our January term. The first time we were trying to get here, we missed the bus because we were waiting in the cold snow at the wrong stop. A week later, after a sleepover with Mikaela and Audrey, we woke up, finally caught the right bus to Vergennes, and successfully ended up here. The decor is delightfully Vermont: one of the tables was a cut tree trunk; the menus were posted on wooden cutting boards, accompanied by some that were adorably pig shaped; and of course the place is the spot, it seems, for my fellow Midd kids - we ran into a gaggle of them leaving as we were coming in. It seems this place is famed for its pastries (or at least Audrey raves about the cardamom bun). She described it perfectly also: the cardamom bun tastes different; it tastes decent enough for me to keep trying pieces of it (we split the bun three-ways) to see if it actually tastes good, but I'm also not sure what I'm tasting. It's not the most amazing pastry I've ever had, but VL is definitely a cute place to spend time with good friends. (You can also take your aesthetic Instagram pictures here!)

What a rare gem to find expertly crafted coffee drinks in a quiet Vermont town... no wonder there was a line out the door, this place really knows coffee. And their food (all hand made from scratch) is superb and original. You can tell this place is a labor of love for these folks... highly recommended!!!

Came here with my wife and father. The drink selection was great, something for everyone. But the drinks are secondary... The food was amazing; I had the bangers and mash, my wife had the duck,my dad had the beef bourguignon. All of our plates were clean before the end. Long story short, the food is to die for, the staff is friendly and professional. This restaurant is worth going out of your way to visit.

A really good cappuccino...but you have to wait in quite a line. That and all the staff have frowny face. I understand they are selling the business, so I hope the new people are happy! But quite an upscale and visually appealing bakery and coffee place.

A former laundromat turned bakery funded by Kickstarter - does it get anymore Vermont than that? The space has been beautifully transformed into a nice little spot to grab a cup of coffee with a pastry. They are the only cafe in Vermont that I know of who serves Intelligentsia coffee. My only gripe was that they serve their espresso in handle-less cups, which makes for a less than practical way of sipping. They also do Chemex drip for lovers of that method of brewing. Onto their pastries. Their croissants were just as flakey and buttery as the ones I had in Paris. I also swiped the last love bun of the day, which was a cinnamon and sugar bun with lemon and grapefruit zest. It's hard to beat a place that bakes in-house pastries with quality coffee and espresso. Vergennes Laundry is without question the best bakery cafe in Vermont.

Perfect croissant with ham & cheese! Beautiful, and delicious latte. Wow! So glad we stopped.

Tried to get in on the way through Vermont but they were on vacation. Got to hit it on the way back, and boy I am so glad we did. I learned of this place right after they opened because I was engaged in the beverage industry in Vermont at the time. When researching them, I found their idea to be outstanding. The idea translates wonderfully upon entering. The aromas of the wood, sweet bread, and roasted coffees meld together before you even place your order. Awesomeness. The best ham n cheese croissant Ive ever had, and Ive had them from all the best bakeries. The coffee selections are great, and the latte was superb. I can't wait to come back! Great work, guys!

Have you ever been to France? No. Okay then, well.... Have you ever wanted to at least get a taste of France? If your answer is yes, then we should be friends. If your answer is no, contact me and I will give you directions to the nearest psychiatric treatment center... For those of you interested, the pastries here are as real as you are going to get. The owners are French- and boy do they know their art! I have been to countless bakeries in VT and they have all been a disappointment. VT does not understand what a bakery is. Selling donuts, and over sugared cookies does not make you a bakery. What the Vergennes Laundry Wood Fired Bakery does, is a BAKERY! This place is soothing. It it plain but elegant with white walls that shine with welcome. There are a few tables and the main counter- that is it. It is very minimalist and down the point. They had a variety of pastries and of course, I had to try almost all of them, along with the full sized loaf of bread. And are you ready? YUMMY! The pastries were (almost) as delicious as the ones in France (I blame the ingredients here). But really, they were real French pastries which is what you want from a bakery. If you're a bakery snob (as in you like real food, not just sugar over everything)- this place is for you. So come on down, and let me have a bite of whatever it is you got! :)

Went out of our way based on an Edible Vermont mag article and it was well worth the detour! Found the selection at 9am on a Tuesday morning surprisingly limited. However, the croissants (we inhaled 3 flavors) in all their wood fired (really) yumminess were, I swear, better than any I've ever had in France. I had a food buzz for a solid 30 minutes after eating. I don't eat croissant normally but make an exception if it's going to be a culinary "experience." And it was. Bonus style points for the casual yet slick interior design (it's been on the blog Remodelista) and great paper bags. A MUST stop place if you are nearby. A destination if you're into bakeries. Would love to go back and see what else is cooking- I believe lunch and dinner happen here as well.

My dinner experience there certainly lived up to expectations. The restaurant is small, seating maybe about 30 people. I wouldn't call it intimate, but I would call it friendly. The menu items are enjoyably named, with some interesting ingredient and flavor combinations. Service is fast and friendly; 3 servers can take care of all the tables quite nicely, with time for fun conversation as you go. The cocktail list is small, and the drinks are simply garnished, but everything we tried was quite flavorful and reasonably priced. As an appetizer, the Moo Moo Dippers, filled with shaved ribeye and corned beef and combined with the remoulade sauce for dipping. were addicting. My salmon filet came atop a bed of roasted sweet potato and corn hash and a sauce on top to give it more interesting presentation and flavor. The pork medallions were similarly appealing. We passed on dessert, because most of the offerings had some form of caffeine in them (e.g., boozy affogato), but I'm certain they would have been equally delicious. I was surprised the restaurant closed so early on days they're actually open, i.e., 8pm. So if you want convenient dining, get there early for dinner, because it does fill up.

A palette-pleasing panoply of plated perfection, Michael's On The Hill puts "epic" in epicurean…read more The Farm to Table restaurant offers fresh local delights, served with carefully concocted condiments that complement--but never overwhelm--the thoughtfully selected appetizers and entrees. The delectable dishes more than make up for the limited number of offerings; there's something for everyone at Michael's On The HIll. My partner and I visited Michael's On The Hill on a Saturday evening in mid-March; we reserved a table for two after we finished skiing at nearby Stowe. If you want a table during the high season, reserve it early--space is limited. Andrew greeted us at the door and after escorting us to our table, handed us off to Heather, our server. Heather is a Professional Server and it shows: Throughout our two+ hour meal, she was available but never intrusive and conversational but never too familiar: She's worked at Michael's for more than two decades and knows the menu perhaps better than the Chef--her recommendations were excellent: Rather than pushing the highest-price menu items, she suggested dishes based on her knowledge, experience, and guest preferences. We started with the local Artisinal cheese plate--three generous cheese selections accompanied by apricot chutney, sweet red grapes, pickled vegetables, candied walnuts, and toast points. The balance of sweet and sour was superlative; the appetizer presented tastefully on a cured wood bark platter--two or three people can pick their favorites and mix and match flavors. The tasteful teaser was a trailer for the main attraction. For entrees, I had the Maple Glazed Duck Breast with Cider Duck Glace accompanied by sweet potato hash, Orange and Arugula salad, and roasted baby carrots; my partner had the special: Beef Bourguignon on top of a cheese polenta with sauteed spinach and a delightful Mirepoix ("meer-PWAH"). Beef Bourguignon is a classic French stew of tender beef braised in red wine--hearty, flavorful, and filling, this French dish is perfect after a long day of skiing. Executive Chef Hess' flourishes transformed the traditional dish into a magically delicious medley of complementary flavors. The duck was cooked to perfection: Soft, warm, and tender on the inside with a hint of smokiness--balanced nicely by the maple glaze and the cider glace. The sweet potato hash was actually small, sweet potato "cubes" mostly hidden below the citrusy salad. When I finally forked the sweet potato cubes, they'd soaked up the cider duck glace, detonating a cluster bomb of flavors in my mouth. We paired the smokey duck and stewy Beef with a succulent bottle of Andrew Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon, whose rich cherry-cassis notes and silky tannins enhanced the sauces and spices of our entrees. Micheal's wine list reads like a Great Novel--long, engaging, occasionally intimidating. Here's where Heather re-enters our Micheal's meal story: In addition to letting us taste an alternative or two from already-open bottles, her familiarity with the menu made our decision much easier. Finally, because I just can't say no to Tiramisu, we were presented with a generous slice of sponge cake soaked in espresso (beans cured down the street), layered with whipped Moscarpone cheese, topped with cocoa powder. We cherished a couple bites and asked to take the remainder home (by the way, Tiramisu is part of a healthy breakfast). Yes, Michael's On The Hill is pricey--with a 23% percent tip, our meal was about $275--but every bite was worth it. Find out for yourself.
