Anyway, I wouldn't advise to picnic in this park since it's pretty bland but there is a park up the road that I found a bit better with heavy traffic due to the tennis court and in which, one feels a bit more safe walking in. There's a Starbs in front of it and other fast in and out restaurants .... not fast food but. yogurt, and pizza grab n go type. There's parking but this park again, not my vibe! Someone was having an event here where everyone was in all white and that looked interesting so I suppose you could have small events here since it's wide open.

Back in my younger days, I used to work in the warehouse district near this park. I would drive by…read morethis park often in my work truck and never thought much of it. There were always homeless people living in the park and it appeared old and rundown. But as I started to read more about it, I learned that it has a rich and important history here in the Valley. Eastlake Park was once called "Phoenix Park" in the early 1890s. The City of Phoenix purchased the park in 1914 and renamed it Eastlake Park. It was an important gathering place for African Americans in the early days because of segregation. Many Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth celebrations have taken place here over the years. It became a place of peace rather than confrontation. Today, Eastlake Park has a number of amenities. It has a baseball field named for former Diamondback pitcher Randy Johnson. It also has an amphitheater, a recreation hall, a peace memorial and a playground named after a pair of alligators that took refuge here. They have done a good job in making this a nice park over the years for people to enjoy while still honoring its past. Recently Phoenix and the NCAA teamed up to unveil the NCAA Men's Final Four Legacy Project. They did this during the 2024 NCAA Men's Final Four weekend that took place here in Phoenix. They refurbished both the indoor and outdoor basketball courts with new backboards, benches, bleachers, wall pads and hoops. A local artist painted a mural on the basketball court wall to pay tribute to the pioneers of Eastlake Park and its rich history.

The park has a vast amount of green space suitable for playing catch flying a kite, having a game of soccer, okaying football or other similar field activities. There are very picturesque palm trees that run along the back side of the park that adds to its ambiance. There is a homeless camp that was set up under the shelter while I was there, They pretty much took over all of the pavilion and part of the playground. The park is home to a pretty decent playground that is on a bed of wood chips. The playground's equipment is limited but in decent shape and consists of a jungle gym with slides, climbing walls and bridges. It has a shade structure built on it to keep the little ones cool on a sunny day. There is also a bank on traditional/toddler swings, a pebble bridge, and sphere climber. As I mentioned, the park's facilities are pretty nice and the park is well maintained. There was a guy doing maintenance and cleaning the park while I was there. This is a decent park to visit if you are in the area or live in the nearby neighborhood. This is definitely not a destination park. A 3.5 star rating would be more appropriate here, but that is not an option, so I went with a 4. One thing that I noticed was missing here was a restroom facility. There is also not a walking or jogging trail at the park. Anyway, this park will do in a pinch or if you have some time to pass.

And recognize the Rio Salado as the provider for the Akimel O'odham people for millennia. The premises are very nice. The buildings, the pond, the acreage with trails, the dribbling Salt River. present in it's banks by the mercy of the local water wranglers. A Phoenix miracle. The first time I srrived for s Protectors of the Salt River stinknet pull, I walked into a young people's river workshop out on a patio. They had created what is called a poster session at technical gatherings. They did not know that, it was Nature Show and Tell for them I was directed to the proper location. I hsve been a Stinknet Eradicator for about two years. I am rewarded when I see Sonoran Desert plants moving into former stinknet infested ground. Thank you Patty and Aldo. I have been called someone eho doesn't know how to have fun. This is so much fun! I love spending time with The Protectors. Thankyou Nina Pulliam for your vision. Due to construction on road, we went opposite direction. We were told (later) that wetlands were in another direction. Signage is being replaced around the whole facility, so information is minimal (in future plans). Getting there currently is tricky depending on arrival direction due to construction of future train-stop which will be a huge positive for visitation to center. Opened up on time (8am), friendly staff and we met Daniel who is one of the directors (hope I got that right), he was kind enough to fill us in on the past history and the huge future plans which sound amazing. Very nice inside to include the restrooms, open & airy with information areas and exhibits. Pond in the back with vegetation. Gift shop, but at this time, not open for sales. We will definitely be back to see the improvements and go the right direction in hopes of seeing some residents (birds). Birding at this time was minimal (direction, time of year, day), and it definitely has huge potential at the right time.

Lots of space to run or workout for adults including a full size basketball court. Safe, clean and well maintained park. I love to sit at the bench to eat when the weather is nice. I often see people waking their dogs or getting some exercise around the park.
