Historically, I've taken my dog to two different vets. One in the city (for convenience) and another vet in the suburbs because she knows her stuff and I trust my dog's life in her hands. When my dog tore his right cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) both vets referred me to Dr. Gendreau. One of the veterinarian's said he had worked in Buffalo Grove, but had recently opened a new office in Northwest Indiana which is closer to my house. I made an appointment and for whatever reason I was scheduled to see Dr. Paula West. After meeting Dr. West I was very happy that she would be performing the surgery on my dog. I found her extremely competent, caring, affable and seemingly trustworthy. My mom and I both liked her immediately. She was gentle with my dog and took her time examining him and explaining our options. She basically said surgery was the best option if we wanted my dog to have the best quality of life. The surgery would cost $5,000. Dr. West didn't pressure us into making a decision and told us to take a some time to think about it. She also told me my dog would need to lose 13 pounds and urged me to cut his food intake in order to avoid the same thing eventually happening to his left leg. Since the surgery I have modified my dogs diet and he's already lost several pounds. It's been 7 weeks since the surgery and my dog is doing very well. Post surgery I've taken my dog to both the city vet and the suburban vet. Both veterinarian's remarked that Dr. West did a remarkable job. I took my dog back to Dr. West because he jumped off the bed after 6 weeks. I wanted to make sure that he hadn't injured himself or compromised the surgery in any way. Dr. West assured us that he was fine and he was right where he should be post op. The most surprising thing what that they didn't charge us for the follow-up visit. I was expecting to pay $100 or something but the receptionist said there was no charge. Dr. West also agreed to let the vet tech give my dog his bimonthly allergy shot free of charge. My regular vet normally charges me $20! When you've already shelled out several thousand dollars unexpectedly not having the office nickel-and-dime you is greatly appreciated. The office is clean and comfortable. The staff have always been friendly and eager to assist me during my visits. I especially loved the vet tech who took care of my dog on the day of his surgery. She said she found him so sweet that she crawled into the cage where he was resting and laid on the floor with him post surgery. I also appreciated that Dr. West called me the day after the surgery to check on my dog. I'm hoping my dog won't need to see Dr. West again, but if he does then I won't hesitate to return. She's worth the short drive over the border. read more

3 years ago you gave my dog his life back-- He came into your office paralyzed from a spinal stroke unable to walk. The care he received by Dr Gendreau and the pool therapy with Alma restored him to be able to walk and run again. He has seen you regularly the last 3 years and gotten to know all your staff. We said he was a star patient. He always wanted to "go see Alma" -- they cared for him like he was one of their own dogs. When arthritis became too much you helped him again-- and then when he had ACL tear last week you were very honest and informative. But Blanco was very sick and surgery was not in the cards - but you still loved him to the bitter end and you all cried with us and were very honest and loving. Blanco knew you would do the best for him too -- How can we thank you all enough? There aren't enough words--The care you gave him and us was exceptional. You were always clear and informative with our options. You are experts at what you do, you love pets and their owners -- your care, expertise and compassion is unmatched. Great care for animals is what drives you all-- you aren't in this to churn out a set of high priced surgeries but to treat animals and their parents well so that they can have fabulous lives together. TPLO surgery resulted in a terrible post op staph infection. 4 months on antibiotic. 4 months post-op, plate and screws had to be removed. one month post op from the plate removal our furbaby is still battling a staph infection from the initial plate procedure. Go to Purdue. This place has no emergency number for after hours or weekends. Crossroads tried getting records on Saturday at 10am, Tuesday Crossroads had to contact them again. they can't even send imperative health records. it's a revolving door over there. the lack of care and compassion for a pet suffering post op infections is obvious. once they complete the surgery... their job is done. absolutely awful place. go to Purdue read more

Very grateful to Dr. Gendreau and his team for how they treated us and our dog Bella who needed a TPLO surgery. He walked us through the surgery in detail and was patient with Bella who was anxious and a bit fearful beforehand. During the post op conversation we felt well equipped and informed on how to help Bella in her recovery. We also appreciated how Dr. Gendreau called afterwards to see how she was doing. Everyone we encountered at the VOC was kind and helpful. The cost was well worth it for us because Dr. Gendreau specializes in these kinds of injuries/surgeries. My dog needed to have surgery on her knee. She was diagnosed with a ruptured CCL and level 3 patellar luxation. My vet recommended VOC for her surgery. I posted on social media to see who was the best in the area, and was given a few choices. Called one place that was highly recommended and their first available appointment for this Doctor was 3 weeks out. My dog was already limping for 2 weeks so I did not want to wait that long, plus I felt like the person I spoke to was inconvenienced by my call and inquiries. She had showed zero compassion and left me with the feeling like I was, "just a number". I tried a 2nd place and that Dr was on vacation. I started to research the surgery and doctors who perform it. I came across multiple 5 star reviews for VCO, plus my vet referred me, so I called. Spoke to the kindest receptionist who put me to ease right away. I was able to get in within a few days for an exam. Due to the crazy Covid world we are in, exam was curbside. It was apparent Dr. Gendraue knew what he was talking about and was extremely knowledgeable about what he would do to correct her injury. I was quoted a price range, depending on the complexity of the surgery once he was in there. I decided to move forward because of all the positive I have read on this Doctor. Surgery day comes and they call me to tell me my dog did very well and that I could come pick her up. They went on to say that based on what he saw during surgery he went with a different option to repair. The price was almost $1000 less than what they quoted. We go next week to have her sutures removed, and she is doing really , really good. I am glad I chose here. Doctor and staff went above and beyond to make sure my dog got the care, and aftercare, she needed! I am highly upset with Dr. Gendreau and his team. They seemed nice over the phone while booking my appointment, but that is the ONLY positive thing I have to say about this place. About a week ago I had a "consultation and same day surgery" planned. When we got there the doctor confirmed what our regular vet thought was a torn ACL (or CCL). He took a quick glance at the x-ray we brought and briefly felt his leg, then told us about an extremely invasive TPLO surgery that would involve cutting his leg bone to put it in an ideal position with metal plates that cost approximately $3,800 (sidenote: the fine print--which they would make you sign prior to leaving your dog that they neglected to discuss with us--read that the surgery follow-ups or extra after-care was not included in the estimate)!! We were hesitant because that was out of our price-range. They offered a Care Card, but only 6 month financing (where other care providers may offer 12, 18, or 24 month options) because after that they start having to pay the credit card company...We told them it was not going to be possible and even though we really wanted our dog in "the best hands" that we would need to consider somewhere else more affordable. Once it was established we were definitely not going to do the surgery that day, the Dr claimed that "they were too busy anyways today and that they could probably do it tomorrow". He still charged me $100 for the 'consultation' and told me "I could call around as much as I wanted, but I wouldn't find it cheaper anywhere else". I CAN NOT EXPLAIN HOW GLAD I AM THAT WE GOT ANOTHER OPINION!!!!! Today, we went to McAfee in Valparaiso and saw their orthopedic team. Over the phone they quoted me about $2,500-$2,800 for the exact same surgery. I would love to recommend them to anyone in our situation, as did a lot of our friends and family. Upon seeing him he confirmed HIS ACL WAS NOT TORN, and instead they discovered that he BROKE HIS FOOT. I whole heartedly believe that they pray on the vulnerable at Dr Gendreau's Orthopedic Center in Highland. read more
