I recently came to House of Shine to attend a junk journaling class. The environment was friendly,…read moreinviting and the space was beautiful. Before the class starts, one of the staff will discuss the vision behind House of Shine and ways to get involved. They have a yearly rotating exhibit with interactive activities throughout the space. Amanda the founder of DFW Junk Journaling Club was our instructor. Amanda provided information on junk journaling, showed examples through her own journals, provided supplies and answered any questions we had. The journaling classes are low cost ($10) and they have ample parking available on site. We were encouraged to bring our own supplies for junk journaling which includes receipts, stickers, pictures, cards etc. The class was casual and you could come and go as you pleased. There are meetups throughout the year for those interested in junk journaling discussed on their Instagram page or on linktree. I left the class inspired and look forward to expanding my creativity through journaling. I look forward to attending another journaling class in May.

I've been to the shop in the past and the prices were very reasonable. However, on a recent stop I noticed their prices have exploded. For example, a single small bread plate, a blanket and a clear vase were priced at $15, $20 and $14.99, respectively. Also the items in the dish/glass area and electronic areas were disorganized. When I walked out of the store another person also walked out of the store. Both of us couldn't believe the prices and we left without buying anything.

I had been calling 20-30 homeless shelters and organizations a day trying to seek immediate shelter, and this ranch is the only place that stepped up to take me in . The owners are generous beyond words, just unconditional love and support every step of the way. Their cause is noble, their hearts are boundless, and they truly live by example. Could gush over them for days for all the help they've given me. Amazing housing accommodations- literally fully stocked cottage with the most tasteful decor and well thought out necessities already provided. If something wasn't there, they were eager to provide it asap. The farm is just adorable; all the animals are well taken care of and are such a pleasure to visit. It's quiet, comfortable, peaceful, and you can tell how much care was poured into putting these places together. Just all the little touches they've added. There's a full-sized oven/stove, refrigerator and freezer, microwave, washer and dryer provided, a place to shower, storage embedded for me to squirrel away belongings as needed, too lol. Roku TV was installed in my current unit today. Free and good Wi-Fi. Keurig for coffee. Even a water purifier! O_O Seriously what homeless shelter does that?? None. None I tell you. I've been there, lived in a shelter for 6 months, and this ranch blows every other place out of the water. Please do your best to volunteer or help out their mission of feeding & taking care of the homeless in our area. Our Daily Bread provides two hot meals every day to anyone in need. You don't have to be homeless, just in need of a meal. They also provide a free 'market' where people get to take fruits, vegetables, bread, and other misc. items with them. They provide hair cuts, counseling, and warm clothes to the community. I personally feel that this blessing of an organization saves lives every single day. During the summer they have events and even help families out with back to school items. Most of their staff is volunteers and always in need of help. Volunteers do things like drive to pick up donations, cook food, serve food, clean, and take care of people who come in. On Monday nights kids can help out as long as an adult is with them. I have taken kids and it is always an experience that helps put things in perspective and realize how lucky I am. Please consider helping out Our Daily Bread by either volunteering or donating money. Everyone there is super nice and appreciative of you taking the time. Help make Denton a better place and help those in need find shelter and resources to continue on.

That being said, the labor the staff gives to this place is a labor of love and service. They are friendly and helpful. The selection varies based on their donations. On most visits they have a light selection of furniture in the front, with clothing, housewares, books, kitchenware, glassware, etc are in the middle and back. At first glance to be honest, most of the prices seemed a bit high. I had to keep reminding myself that this is for a charity. The other thing is that it is all on sale, so the sale prices are more in line with the market value of most of the items. Another note to know before you come here is that while most of the items are nice, their line of "Upscale Resale" may be a bit of a stretch. Nonetheless, my visit to this shop was pleasant as have been all of them and I will keep coming back to check for new merchandise!

Especially on purses, shoes, and furniture. A lot of it felt wildly inflated, even compared to Goodwill. I kept browsing out of sheer curiosity and couldn't wrap my head around some of the tags: used plastic shoes priced at $40+, a worn out Michael Kors bag for $30. The clothing section seemed more reasonably priced, although I didn't notice any higher-value brands to really justify a comparison. Overall, this place feels very hit or miss. You might stumble across a decent find, but anything with a recognizable name seems to be marked up far beyond what it's worth.
