Been to Via Bicycle's original location years and years ago to get a bike serviced; had no problems and got good advice. 'Been past the S. Broad location many times past several years. Finally decided to buy one that fit my height, weight and size, went to ask questions. Curtis, who's been with the business for years, greeted me pleasantly and I shared what I was looking for. Based on height and size alone (told him my weight), he knew what would be best for me and brought out a beautiful bike, 27", I fell in love with it; 'fully tuned up, new lock and cable as requested by a potential customer who hadn't been back since nor put down any deposit - wow, my gain! Price: $400.00 + $65 for the brand-new lock and cable (Kryptonite), and about $37 sales tax - total about $502.00 (CASH ONLY for sales AND service, folks-check the website; air and oil free!). Curtis allowed me to test ride it and took the time to watch to see if any adjustments were needed - the seat height did, demonstrated how the lock and cable should be used, what structures are best to lock the bike up to and how to position it (not on the curbside of the pole/stand where a vehicle could hit it!) and how to use the air valves. I was hooked and put down a deposit that day, came back next day with the balance and rode it home, not before Curtis noticed the rear wheel needed more air, and when I asked, showed me again how to use the lock and cable and air valves. Bike is in excellent condition; everything works as advertised, extremely happy with what I paid especially since the lock came with free key registration and key replacement and anti-theft protection offer (must register online for both, anti-theft protection requires fee, and for all of Curtis' advice -including to bring the bike back in about a month for any possibly needed adjustments). I have been patronizing Via along with several other local bike shops and have come to conclusion that Via does the best work and has the most knowledgeable staff in the city. Give me a V! Give me a I! Give me a A! What does that spell? Hipsters on bicycles!!!! (just kidding) I know I'm bitter but who isn't if you were born in the City of Brothery Lard? But VIA is much more then just the trendy bike store. The owner could be a Vauldeville Showman complete with early 20th century mustache and sporting a over-sized circus-cycle which you can catch him riding down South Street at certain times of the day. He and his motley crew of young "bike messenger-like" experts know their stuff. Though yes the wait can be tough especially summers and weekends, expect that. Philly's bike scene has increased 100% over the past years. Critical Mass is a good example, the once a month bike marathon, crowding the streets starting at City Hall. It's just a fun, cheap and afforable way to travel. Now with gas prices sky-rocketing expect bikes to get as over-populated as the "Hong Kong" rush hour. Take it you're not going to get a new bike, that's not their style. They sell and purchase used bikes and bike-parts. Infact last summer I bought a bike made from many parts they collected over time. It's kind of cool and it's a bang for your buck. So if you wanna impress a cute "bike messenger" at Love or Rittenhouse Sq. parks or just ride an awesome "Schwinn" circa "Ye Olde Days" this is it! Oh the inside looks something right out of the bookstore from "The Neverending Story" but if the movie took place with a bike store and the boy is curious about a bike the store-keeper says "Is not for sale." The guys at Via are SO NICE. Not just nice, but all caps so nice. I'm not a biker. But I want to be one. And I moved to Philly last year, which is the most bike-friendly city I've lived in, and I lived on Spruce, which has a bike lane. So the bike gods were calling me to become a biker. So I went to swap meet at the bike expo last fall, tried out a few cheapo bikes. I first met Curtis and his son when I was struggling to ride a bike that was halfway falling apart up and down an alley. He offered to try it out for me and then recommended that I not get it. I then tried out a different swap meet bike, a little easier to ride, Curtis took a look, took a ride, asked the price and told me it was a great deal. On my first bike ride, I happened to bike by Via Bicycle, and Curtis recognized me through the window. Who knew my bike consultant happened to own his own bike shop?! He gave me a bike map and some advice. In the year since then, I went there a few times for oil and air for the tires, and everyone at the store -- both customers and staff -- have been amazingly helpful and kind. A year later, I had ridden that bike 20 or so times, and it turns out, I'm just not a biker. When I was getting ready to move out of Philly, I went by Via to ask if they buy bikes. Curtis bought my bike back for about what I paid for it. Maybe if I'm back in bike-friendly Philly, I'll try the world of biking again just so I can hang with the awesome people at Via. read more

Terrible. There really isn't any other way for me to describe this shop. I stared at a blank space for a few moments wrestling with a less abrasive way to put it, but there really isn't one. I actually don't know where to start, but i'll try... A recent Via-ctim showed me their unfortunate purchase-- a terribly heavy bike-boom era Raleigh (step-through) with chipped paint, a torn saddle (typical couch-cushion), rust pretty much everywhere you can imagine, old cottered cranks and a browning chain (it'd been cleaned and lubed, but that's really it). She's 5'0" even; the bike is roughly 52cm, maybe larger. The saddle was SLAMMED to the frame in a half-hearted attempt to accommodate her height, but even still her arms were stretched way out and she had to lean forward to reach the brakes. All for-- get ready-- $200. It's likely that the bicycle garnered this price a few decades ago when it was brand new and unridden. Today, i'd say it would be fair to ask maybe $50-$70 if it were in exceptionally good condition. This one was certainly not. I don't know of a single bike shop in philadelphia (other than Via, of course) who'd be OK with selling someone a bicycle in such disrepair with this poor a fit. Shame on you, Via... Another example can be found from a Yelper on this very page: "He then even asked his repair guy to get me a quote if I were to swap out the flatbars for dropbars. When that came out to $225, I decided I might just want to get a new bike altogether." $225 to swap out a set of bars. I can't vouch for this reviewer's story, but i'm certainly not surprised. There was another instance where I went in to purchase a chain ring with a slightly less-than-ubiquitous BCD for a home repair i wanted to make at the last minute. Despite being familiar with their practices, i figured-- being pretty experienced with bicycle maintenance-- that an in person visit would be fine. Guess again. When i asked the price for the part once it was in my hand, i felt a little uncomfortable with what i heard. Knowing that the price was way over what it was worth (the ring's teeth were well worn), i asked the person i spoke to if he could give me a more reasonable price (and explaned why). When he went to grab the owner, i was given a relatively firm answer ("no"). As i put the ring down, i noticed it wobbled from side to side-- it wasn't flat, but BOWED. When i pointed this out, the owner grinned and asked if i wanted it for a bit cheaper. Needless to say, i walked out immediately. The unfortunate thing about Via-- well, the MOST unfortunate; there are definitely many-- is the fact that newer riders feel they're getting a good deal. They see a working bicycle and a price slightly cheaper than they find at shops who aren't in the business of deceiving their customers and think they've found a shop that cares. What they don't realize, though, is that they've actually bought something worth so little that other bike shops (second hand or otherwise) would never sell this sort of thing to an unsuspecting customer. If you go through the reviews, you'll notice a certain trend: New, inexperienced or unsure consumers stopping in for a first bicycle or a tube change under a five star rating, followed by a one or two star rating from someone who went in for something a bit more substantial. That's the thing with Via-- if you need an innertube or know little about bicycles, everything will seem kinda neat. The creaky wooden floors, the dusty old bicycles with character, the hustle and bustle, the almost-rude staff... this can all seem a bit romantic to someone who recently moved to the city and wants to buy a first bike, or simply someone who never rode before and decided to start. But under the hood, this is by and large a horrible bicycle shop packed with what i can only guess are cheap bulk lots of old worthless bicycles bought for pennies and sold after VERY minimal work for dollars. Stay FAR away. If you want a fair price on a bicycle you can afford or want something with the character of an older 70s or 80s build, visit the Bike Church (google philadelphia bike church). You'll get a far better bike for much closer to what it's worth without any of the BS. PS-- sorry this review got a little wordy. So my new to America roomate locked my bike up poorly outside of via mid day on a Tuesday. It was stolen (his fault not via) however, in contacting the OWNER the next day I found out two things that rubbed me the wrong way. 1- their "security" system posted outside is a total hoax, the cameras don't even exist. 2- he saw my bike, locked up wrong, and as the owner of a local BIKE SHOP, instead of taking the bike in to a safe place and leaving a note, took a photo of the bike to, in his words, post on their website how to not lock up a bike. Super bummed, life goes on. However the icing on the cake comes a few days later when I went in to talk to the owner, instead of a "hello how are you can I help you today?" I got a, "don't walk over here there's a dog and it bites. For being a local business I have to say they can suck it and I would rather be bike less than buy a bike from them. read more

I stumbled upon this place one day and what can I say...I fell in love! There are bikes everywhere. Lower rows, upper rows...all arranged in an organized confusion, if ya know what I mean. While picturing that, throw in a knowledgeable staff, your uncle with a 'signature' moustache and a VERY philosphical view on life who runs the shop...and there ya have it! You know, I really just don't understand the love that everyone has for Via. I can really only thing of one positive experience that I've had there, although I'll get to that later. First off, I'd like to talk about those used bikes that they have for sale. Have any of you even looked at them up close? They are rusted, really old, and all of them require at minimum a tune-up. How convenient that a bicycle shop, which is already jacking up the prices for those bikes, is selling them. It's a total scam, seriously. When I first moved to Philly and had my first bike stole (sigh, memories...we all remember our first time), I was recommended to go to Via both for a new bicycle and repairs. I chose a Schwinn 3-speed, which looked like it had seen better days, and was assured that they were going to fix everything up, give it new brakes, and clean off all the rust by the time I picked it up the next day. 24 hours pass, and when I returned to get my bike I noticed that the rust was still there, just with a $282 price tag added on to it. To top that off, I had to slam on my brakes on my ride home and nearly got hit by a car because they were just as bad as when I had initially tested out the bike. I promptly returned it, and while the owner assured me that I could bring in my new bike for a free tune up (that's the only good experience that I mentioned earlier), I just can't bring myself to trust Via. Also, the people that work there seem like they are on mass amounts of drugs at all times. When I asked to buy a tiny wrench to help with all those little adjustments that bikes inevitably need, the girl looked at me like I was speaking Hindi and slowly responded "What...? Oh...yeah...you should be, like, really careful because...[looking at the wrench]...it's really sharp...you know?" Come on, really? I'm an adult, not a kid requiring nerf padding on everything that I own. Plus, as someone used to smoke way too much pot, I can recognize when someone is baked out of their mind. Namely her, and the rest of the staff that I saw. Definitely go to Bicycle Revolutions instead. The actual services are slightly more expensive, but the people that work there aren't pretentious, they know their shit, and it's an infinitely more inviting atmosphere. read more

I've actually never in my life experienced such rude customer service. I came in to ask a question about my tires and without even getting a word out, one of the workers (Curtis, I presume?) yelled at me to "wait back outside and be patient." REALLY? I didn't even say one word to this dude, so I don't know why he thought this was necessary? The other customers in the shop looked pretty appalled too. If you're looking for a garbage bike that looks "vintage" this is the spot for you. If you want to purchase a nice bike that doesn't fall apart every month from a genuinely decent person, look elsewhere. Having a hip mustache doesn't qualify you to work in a bike shop. This story all started when I unexpectedly got the afternoon off from work on a beautiful day. What do you do on an occasion such as this? Well I hopped on my bike and rode around the city! As I was riding I noticed that the petal felt funny, like it was about to fall off. I kept riding and asked a young gentleman who was getting on his bike if he knew of a bike shop in the area. He said that there was an excellent shop down on 9th st, Via's. So I rode down and was immediately impressed by all the bikes outside and the free compressed air hookup that anyone can use. I was very quickly greeted by Curtis, the owner of the store (with a killer mustache!). He was busy helping someone else but told me that someone would be right with me. I took a seat on the bench and waited for him to finish up with the bike at hand. I told him the problem I was having and he said he needed to replace the crank arm and would have me out of there in no-time for about $17. I told him that the shop came very highly recommended and you could tell he really took that to heart. He said that he really prides himself on his shop and if "the guys aren't doing the best job for the best price, they're outta here!". He did have me out of there in no time and the bike feels great. I was a little short on the cash (about $5) and he said that when I came back this weekend to get the petals tightened up, I could bring the rest of the money - I really liked that. Well ... I can say that after I read some of the yelp reviews for VIA I was a bit nervous....No customer service.... Nasty mustache man.... But that wasn't going to detour me from checking out the store. From their website I could tell they'd have exactly what I wanted. So I started off my morning on a mission to purchase a bicycle. I made my walk from Northern Liberties to South Street and found VIA right on the corner of 9th. Walked right in and was greeted by who else... The owner of the shop and the mustache, Curtis. I told him my story how I had to make sure I left with a bike or my roommates would kill me. (Ive been talking about getting a bike all summer with them. )Within 15 seconds of talking to me, he pulled the bike that I'd eventually get. Curtis and I had a chat about YELP, how I found them on yelp, reviews and how they can help and harm. I work at a salon that is also reviewed by yelp, so I understand. While we were talking ,a long chain of children in day care walked by. Every single one said hello to Curtis aka Mr. Mustache Man. And with that he said hello back to every single child. Both the kids and Curtis laughing the whole time. Curtis gave me his undivided attention while still able to help his employees with questions. He was also on top of helping other customers with available spots to lock up their bikes. Overall I had a great experience at VIA. I'd trust anyone in this shop who has been under the owners guidance. He has been doing this since he was 24 years old. Good conversation, great deal on a bike, awesome customer service. I've never bought anything at Via, but I walked past before and I heard one of the sales people say to someone that all of the used bikes outside are 200+. Granted, that comes with a tune up and whatnot, but good lord. That being said, the shop itself is really neat. It kind of reminds me of Funhouse, but bike-themed. They have lots of neat knick knacks, all bicycle related, around the store. The sales people always seem friendly, but they can get really crowded on weekends, so expect a wait. read more

This is where I bought my beloved pink bike and this is the shop that I will continue to stick with for all my bike needs. Once, I had a weird issue with one of my back brakes. I simply could not figure out why it was all sorts of 50 shades of busted, so I took it for a spin over to Via to get it checked out. I expected to leave it there to be looked over and fixed, but the friendly bike-messenger-looking dude-worker was all like, "lemme take a look at that." He took it from me, plunked it up on a rack, and VOILA! My back brake was fixed... at NO CHARGE!!! Some people may tell you that the service at Via is crap and that the owner is just plain rude, but honestly, the only time I've seen the owner be "rude" to customers is when the customers are acting like impatient jackasses and deserve it. read more

Via is a place I only go to when I have to. When I need to find that weird sized bottom bracket lockring for a 70's english cruiser, they usually have it. Curtis, the owner is obviously a bike nerd to the core and he is awesome for it. However many of his employees are difficult to deal with and make it easier to stay away. Im not sure why people feel elite working in a bike shop but it seems to happen here. The prices are steep, especially on the used bikes, but its a business, not craigslist. read more

While spending $80 on a bike might sound appealing---next to dropping $600 on a nice new mountain bike---a lot of the "vintage" rides they peddle (catch that pun?) at Via are probably worth about $20. But, of course, you're paying for an image. When I went to Amsterdam to visit a Dutch friend, I asked her if anyone there road NEW bikes (as opposed to the 1960s models I was seeing everywhere.) Her rejoinder? "Sure, there are people with new bikes. No one I would hang out with though." Of course, you're also paying for the assurance that you'll be able to ride your new bike home. Half the time when you buy an old bike at a garage sale, you end up spending some 40 or 50 bones just to get the thing working again. read more

Is it still possible to get a cheap bike for under $100 at one of these joints anymore? I received an $800 bike when I graduated college some years back. I cherished it. It was a chrome Caloi. I hardly ever used it, but for a few months I got into the habit of using it - after having it in storage for a decade. It was like brand new. Beautiful machine. Someone stole it at 17th & Chestnut and probably sold it to a place like the one I'm reviewing here. That's the part which bothers me. I go in these second-hand places, looking for a dirt cheap bike because it will only get stolen again. When I go in, I notice them charging more than a new one would cost me. Why? What happened to the cheap local used bike shops in Philly? I wonder who purchased my bike after it was stolen? read more

I come to Via Bicycle for help putting air in kids bike tires and also for the tires on my jogging stroller. I get great, friendly service, and I appreciate all the free air. :-) I've only had occasion to buy bike helmets here, but I would recommend them to everyone based on what an amazing neighborhood resource they are. read more

In the past I've stopped by Via to purchase small items, and the lube/rear light/kryptonite lock I got there were similarly priced to other shops in the city. My experience with the service each time was OK. I don't get Via's business model for bikes, which seems to be that they sell $10 garage sale beaters for ten times what they're worth (ok, maybe I do get it, but I don't like it). I've stopped by to look for a new frame, and after telling the salesman what I wanted I was shown a single overpriced and generally worthless item. He wasn't even sure if it was the right size, and when I asked if they had anything else he gave another customer a "can you believe this guy?" sort of look. So, if you need something like a lock or light, and Via is nearby, it's an ok place to go, though in the future I'll probably make an effort to give my business to a different store. If you're looking for a bike, even if you want a total beater, Craigslist makes more sense. read more

I ride an 18-19 year-old bike that had a seat post about four inches too short for me up until two months ago--oops. I went in to have them give me a new post and also asked them to give me a tune up and look at the breaks. I found all the employees there extremely friendly AND they didn't try to sell me a new bike either. The prices were fair and my bike is riding like it's brand new;) Double thumbs up. read more

I needed a basic bike to commute around town with and went to Via with a friend. We both got solid bikes for about $200, but mine turned out to have a number of fundamental problems (bent rear axle, chainwheel slightly broken) and I had to take it to Firehouse Bikes in West Philly to be fixed. Service at Via was so-so as mentioned (Curtis the owner made a point of chewing out one of his employees in front of us, which can't be good for morale), but I can handle that - it was the poor service that bothered me. Two stars because my friend's bike works, but no more than that because they did NOT put the same care and attention into the bicycle that I got at Firehouse. read more

I have had nothing but awesome experiences here. My dad bought me a bike here over the summer for my b-day, and it was $175 for a phillips 3-speed. They fixed it up (new tires, new seat, new brakes) all as part of the price. This was more than I might be comfortable spending, but the bike is in great shape and the guys working there were great (loved Curtis the owner). So eventually my tires went flat, I stopped riding my bike, and spent too much money on SEPTA. I just managed to get my act together and went in to have it tuned up- Alex, an awesome employee, tuned it up (FOR FREE) and gave me some tips, plus sold me 2 lights for night riding. He treated me well, no scorning for not knowing my bike better, and made me feel comfortable bringing my bike back anytime. As someone who uses her bike to get around on but isn't an expert by any definition of the word, I am happy to have a local bike shop that I can depend on for dumb questions as well as legitimate help. curtis is the man! i lived on this corner for a year and via was my go-to bike shop. bought my bike here for a good price, had it serviced once or twice, stopped in for parts now and then. everyone is really friendly and it never feels like the dudes in the shop are like, testing how much you know about bikes. not pretentious. these folks just love bikes and want you to be happy with your bike. prices are really reasonable. the via team is always willing to answer questions. the shop gets busy on weekends so maybe try to stop in after work instead. or just be prepared to wait a little bit. definitely not a place to go if you are in a hurry, but that is a good rule of thumb with most stores. if you go in this shop and are polite and friendly you will have a polite and friendly experience. if you feel like something about your service wasn't great, speak up politely and curtis will always make it right! if you have a bad experience at via it is probably because you aren't a nice person to begin with. read more

Via is not your run of the mill bike shop. That's why I like them. The product display is terrible, they're cash only and it's messy. It's kind of like stepping into your eccentric uncle's garage or barn if your uncle is an awesome hoarder bike nerd with the thickest mustache this side of the Mississippi. Via is the ultimate shop for retro grouches - More vintage bike shit than you can shake a stick at. I've never had them do work for me but they seem to be pretty popular as mechanics. I'm a little skeptical of the prices they put on their used (but tuned up) bikes for sale but it's whatever - they do good work. Via may not be my go-to shop but it's great to have them in the city. This past weekend I picked up a sick old school frame pump from them. Sure I had to root through a drawer with one of the staff members but that's the charm of the shop. I would not have been able to find a pump like that at any other LBS in the city. read more

This the way bike shops used to look, full of bikes and staff that did not care what kind of bike you ride. All they deal in are rehabbed used bikes and they have wide range no matter how big or small you need. Curtis and his crew know how fix every kind of bike no matter what year it is built in. At Via Bicycle when they talk about vintage bikes they don't mean 1970's road bikes. At Via Bicycle vintage is 1890 to 1950 is vintage. No matter what kind of bike you have they can fix it. If you need a unique part they have it or can find it. The shop can get a little crowded sometimes so don't take it personally if they ask you to wait outside. read more

If I could give this place 100 stars I would. Curtis is one of the friendliest, funniest and most knowledgeable mechanics in Philly. A few years ago, I had a retro bianchi with a bottom bracket that was worn out. Every other shop told me my frame was destroyed and to buy a new bike, which broke my heart. I brought it to Via for one last look and Curtis added hot brass to the bracket and made new threads and I rode it for another year after that. During my most recent visit, Curtis noticed my chain line was off, which another bike shop had attempted to fix, but apparently failed. Curtis is observant and honestly brilliant. Best shop in the city. I've purchased multiple bikes from these guys and completely trust their workmanship and knowledge.

The only thing this shop is useful for is filling up your tires with gas. I have been to many bike shops in Philly, and though I love the cramped overstuffed atmosphere of this shop that somehow makes it warm and inviting, it is actually the worst service in the city. I recommend you stay far away from this place.... They actually PUT MY BRAKES ON BACKWARDS after fixing a flat (that deserves all caps because it almost killed me actually, finding out that my bike did not have working breaks). I also always have to wait even for simple repairs, and they never do anything on the spot. Its always crowded and a complete mess, and I always get flat tires when I get my bike from their shop, not sure if its a coincidence, but its happened 3 or 4 times. If you ask the staff of Via Bicycle a question, watch out because they know a lot about, you guessed it, bicycles. They will answer your question. Very knowledgeable and able to strap wheels onto anything that has forks on it. They also have a big carnival-like sign and you can't miss the mini-Amsterdam flood of bikes covering the sidewalk.
