There are many great memories from over the years since we had Alla host birthdays, sent our children to summer camps and participated in group art excursions to Yosemite. Ryan, Ichen Art Academy's Artist in Residence, has provided me with fantastic support over the years. Initially, many years ago, we researched several art schools in the Bay Area, specifically in the South Bay, and even tried out a local one near our home for a year (and discovered the instruction was limited). Then we came upon Ichen Art Academy in Fremont, CA. Both our girls have always been creative but needed more instruction on art techniques and development. A major attraction to their art program was the variety of lessons provided to enrich one's mind to the world of art. Ichen Art provided classes on Sketching, Charcoal Drawing, Watercolor, Oil Painting, Chinese Calligraphy and Painting, and Digital Art. Our daughters took the foundational sketching class, which provided a very good opportunity to build one's art skills. The classes and programs offered are very structured and well organized. Their Fremont office manager, Jessica, has been very helpful with scheduling and class registration questions. In addition, not only is Ms. Ichen Wu (founder and principal) one of the instructors, Ichen Art also provides various specialized instructors for the art class offerings, from sketching to watercolor painting to oil painting to digital art to Chinese calligraphy, etc. It was very beneficial to see and learn art from various forms and perspectives. Besides providing art classes, Ichen Art also provides other opportunities for students to enrich their art potential and personal development. They work closely with the Youth Art Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps provide art students leadership training and development (in which our oldest daughter is the student Director of Art). Ichen Art also invites art models to come in and pose for live body art sculpture drawing lessons. Ichen Art has also helped students participate and submit their work of art to various local and national art competitions, where several students have earned top awards, including our oldest daughter. Their various instructors also act as counselors/consultants to help with questions and guidance for the students. Our daughter's oil painting instructor, Ryan, has shared some great advice and guidance on painting perspectives and creating a portfolio. The academy also host seminars and webinars for students and parents that cover topics on developing art portfolios and college preparation. Our oldest daughter in high school developed an interest in fashion design and Ms. Wu set up fashion design lessons with a local instructor, which eventually led to the development of a summer fashion design program at the academy (and our daughter became a teacher assistant/co-instructor for the program). The time invested in the Ichen Art Academy lessons and classes for our daughters have been very positive. Our oldest daughter's interest in fashion design has led to her college pursuits having been accepted to the #1 fashion school in the US. Teacher Robin has been wonderful. She is incredibly patient with the kids and does a great job keeping them engaged and focused throughout the session. The progression of the class is also thoughtfully designed, starting from basic tracing and moving to learning how to color properly, stay within the lines, and color in a consistent direction. It is impressive how much the kids pick up in such a short time. We have also had a great experience with the communication and scheduling. Both the office and Robin are very responsive, and everything has been smooth and easy from the start. Overall, it has been a fantastic experience and we are very happy with the class.

Before I paid, they were extremely enthusiastic about getting me onboard: daily follow-up emails, very responsive communication, and multiple calls to make sure I paid upfront. Once payment was made, the service essentially disappeared. At my first class, I didn't receive the full 30 minutes even though I arrived early, because my instructor had to cover the front desk while the front desk staff was on break. I accepted that at the time. After class, I asked to be assigned practice drills. The instructor never responded. I followed up by email, still no response. Eventually, the front desk said they would "chase" the instructor. Then, on the day of my next class, I finally received the homework--and it was a vocal drill for a completely different student, even though I was taking a keyboard class. For my second class, I was running late and called the front desk to notify them. No one answered, I left a voicemail, and no one returned my call. I still went in person and arrived before my class was supposed to end, only to be told that my instructor had already started working with someone else because I was late. I received no notice or communication about this. When I told them I wanted to cancel, they stopped responding entirely. The front desk said there was no way to get a refund because I had paid upfront. Emails about cancellation have gone unanswered yet again. This is honestly the worst service provider I've dealt with. Be very careful, once they have your money, responsiveness and accountability seem to disappear.

I've attended School of Rock Palo Alto for 4 years now, and I'm leaving next week. To be clear; School of Rock is a wonderful program that I am comfortable to say gave me great advice, experiences, and relationships with friends and teachers. I don't regret meeting any of my instructors, they are great people that know what they're doing. But I do want to say that the experience of being a student has gone downhill tremendously. The groups used to be organized so that kids in similar age groups and skill levels were together, so they could all have a pleasant, team-like band experience. But now, near 18 year olds are grouped with 10 year olds, making the program uncomfortable for both. The staggering skill levels in the group make it near-impossible to make it work. While performing, I was embarrassed more times onstage than I wasn't. The quality in venues has gone down from genuine places with stages to parking lots and cramped community centers that can hardly accommodate the audience and the performers. The equipment provided in the rehearsal rooms, especially the drum kits, usually have something wrong with them and take forever to actually repair. There's not enough seating or space for how packed the performance groups are. I feel as if my family is paying for something that isn't worth it. This place has just disappointed me time and time again, and it truly makes me upset because I adore my teachers and I hate to leave them. They were the only aspect of the school that made me stay as long as I did. They are great people who want to share their love for music with their students, and I have nothing bad to say about them. They are smart, honest people. It's just the organization and management of the establishment that made it unpleasant and disappointing. If you're a parent looking to enroll your child in School of Rock, I encourage you. It taught me great skills I use everyday, and the love I now have for my voice and guitar. But I do encourage you to enroll them at a different location. Don't go through all of the trouble my family and I have.
