It used to function as a one room school, but has since been converted into a B&B. The western schoolhouse decor is fairly cool, but the location is the best part for me. Living in an apartment complex, when I step outside onto my porch I would be met with the uninspiring vista of all the other porches. And of course Stark St. off to my left. But for a brief weekend I could instead sip my coffee and gaze out at beautiful mountains, breathing the clear air of the country. Danny the horse would come over and say hi, and I would hang out with him for a while. The cows would look at me quizzically, as cows are wont to do. All of which is a damn sight more pleasant than sipping coffee on my small porch at home. Having breakfast brought to you at the time of your choosing ain't that bad either, I tell you what.

You get all you need here; genial hosts, clean room, comfy bed, warm shower, and a television or free WIFI for relaxing entertainment. Bonus: It's a half block from the Grubsteak restaurant for fantastic service and food. When you go, look for and say hi to Sebastian. He likes an occasional baby carrot too.

The room is what I would call 'refreshed old'. It's been given a bit of a facelift with flooring and furniture etc. You can see the several layers of paint in some areas. Basic bathroom... a pedestal sink and toilet... no place to put a small toiletries bag. The fridge didn't work, no clock or clock radio, and a heater that would come on every 20 minutes, warm the room to 80, then shut off til it hit 60, then repeat... at 50 decibels. And you could see the parking lot through the crack in the door when shut. All this for $108 including tax and the $15 pet fee. My wife said "at least it's clean", and it was clean enough.

You are going to get two types of reviews. For people who are frequent campers this is a five…read morestar place. Manicured lawns, sites that have hedges around them and very clean bathrooms and showers. Firewood for sale. A book exchange and a nice trail along the river. For those people it's five stars. For those who don't camp the issue is mosquitoes. There is a swampy area a nearby and if there is no breeze especially in the evening, they can be overwhelming. I am from Alaska and the mosquito is the state bird. Here they are equally impressive. If you have screens and bug dope, they are manageable because it's mainly in the evening they are a pain. If you don't, prepare it's uncomfortable and those campers would say two stars.

The owner seemed really nice though I didn't do the booking or talk with him much, personally. The park is dog and kid-friendly. The creek is nice and cold and was great for the kids to play in and was easy to access. (I.e., no stairs to go down, etc.) There was plenty of parking for our crew which was really helpful. There are no water or sewer hookups at each site, but you can do a septic dump on your way out of the park. I think you can also fill your water tank when you enter. (I don't manage the trailer, as you can tell. :) Adjacent to the RV park is a city park for kids with swings, slides, etc. There's also a tennis court with a basketball hoop in it. Just up on the main street there's a little store and coffee shop, though they're closed a couple of days in the middle of the week. Down the road a tiny bit, there's a mercantile with all the basics you might need. There are a couple other little spots in town but those are the ones we most frequented. We went into John Day, Mitchell, and the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center in Kimberly on our day trips. A bit of a drive, but made for nice activities. (FYI, everything in this area of Oregon will be a drive.) General note: Come prepared with sunscreen, hats, a pop-up shade, and lots of mosquito repellent and bug bite cream. It gets pretty hot in Dayville, and thunderstorms rolled through almost every day of our trip. Overall I definitely recommend South Fork RV Park and visiting Dayville and surrounding areas!
