We knew most motels in the John Day area would be booked during the '62 Days celebration in Canyon City. So, we booked a room for two nights about six weeks ahead for $89 a night. It seemed like a great deal. But when we go there, they suddenly announced that the price was $139 a night, $50 more each night. With just about every room in town now booked, we were stuck. Also, they need to put down a rubber roll to prevent slips in the bathtub. When I was getting out of the tub after a shower, I pushed off with the foot that was still in the tub. It was slick after I had used soap and shampoo. I fell to the track of the sliding bath door. I didn't get hurt, but I was concerned that I might be cut, or worse (like breaking a leg). This is an accident waiting to happen! read more

I decided to spend my birthday in the John Day area because it is between Baker City and the John Day painted hills, fossil museum and the Blue Basin. It is just an amazingly beautiful part of the country. We spent two nights at Dreamers Motel because we were able to reserve a suite with a kitchen and they allowed our dog. I never expected the suite to be an apartment. It had two bedrooms, a nice big bathroom with tons of storage and a kitchen with cooking supplies (room 35). READ BEFORE YOU MAKE A RESERVATION: There some issues that some people won't appreciate, but I can accept. 1. I appreciate the original 1950's/1960's kitchen appliances, even though they could have been kept a little cleaner. The stove and oven are some of the original Thermadors. So cool to see them, but a little weird to use. 2. Almost everything is probably original, including the heating and air system in this unit. Every room, but the kitchen is on a different heating and air system and some have more than one temperature controller, but you have to figure out which is which since some work and some don't. There is a window unit in the bathroom that may or may not work. 3. There is an ancient rotary phone in the living room that is way cool, but, even thought it is plugged in, doesn't work. 4. The place could use some renovations for sure and a deep cleaning. Overall, it was clean, but the windows, the drawers in the kitchen and the oven and stove could use some love. There is tons of storage in the bathroom, kitchen and main bedroom. Cable pretty much sucks and the small television is in a recessed cabinet that is hard to see unless you are sitting directly in front of it. Wifi is excellent. I ended up not cooking in the kitchen because there is a very decent restaurant directly in front of the motel called the "Outpost" that we were able to order takeout from. It was nice to have a kitchen table to sit at while we were eating. Service is VERY friendly. This would be a great suite for families. It is like an early 60's museum room, so it might be fun for younger people to see. read more

Had a wonderful few days here, and highly recommend this place if passing through the beautiful John Day area. They have a classic retro-style here, with nice tile work and paint job. Also, it is SUPER clean and tidy. Lots of amenities in your room: coffee and coffee pot, mini fridge, and microwave. Lots of towels, even a shower cap! The owners are very nice and will help you feel comfortable and welcome. Definitely a great place to stay! read more

I have no idea how this place has 4 stars?! I'm bewildered. It is clean and everything is in working order. I'll give them that. Here is a list of the negatives: - popcorn ceilings - bed with only 2 pillows - cable TV has about 20 stations, but all the good ones are grainy and nearly unwatchable. - tiny, tiny extra-mini fridge. If you're forced to stay here for 3 weeks for work a larger, more typical hotel fridge would be better as in one that could hold a half gallon of milk for example. - smoking...apparently people can sit outside their doors and smoke as opposed to being a smoke free facility/grounds. - WiFi signal is extremely weak, almost unusable. The local 4G signal is far stronger. - No laundry - No pool, hot tub, or fitness room. - No breakfast. Several reviewers and even this hotel itself (motel technically) have mentioned and claim this place is "retro". There is nothing retro about this motel. It was built around 1960 so its architectural style looks the part and is hidious. One positive is the current owners are doing a good job keeping it running, clean, and in good working order. 4 stars?? Again, I don't get it. Maybe compared to the three other crappy hotels in this crappy town, but this hotel gets a strong 2 stars in the real world. read more

I stayed at the Dreamers for a work trip and absolutely will stay here again. My hotel room was very clean and well maintained. I had all of the nostalgia seeing the appliances and fixtures. My trip was in the winter and the room's heater worked perfectly and wasn't one of the noisy wall units you usually find in newer hotels. The parking lot was free of snow and walkways were cleared and had de-icer. The owner was so friendly and made sure I had everything I needed. You can tell that the family takes pride in their independent hotel. Location is perfect. Restaurants, coffee shop, and connivence stores all within an easy walking distance. I will certainly continue to support this independent, local business when I stay in John Day. read more

Was coming through town for the first time and just for one night. Called the manager a few hrs in advance just to confirm rooms were still available. He is very nice, very professional. The building may look a little dated, but for a clean, no frills place, I recommend. Even gave me a few postcards and offered to mail them! It's the little things..... read more

My husband and I planned a night in John Day during our road trip this summer. When looking at the hotels, I immediately wanted to support the local guy since prices were comparable to the chain hotels in town (we lived in John Day for a little bit several years ago). Upon check-in, the owner was very cordial. The king bed was great, the bathroom was clean, and the hot water was immediate! The air conditioner helped as well. With this being an older hotel, the key is a real key, which I thought was cute. The owner kept up with small grounds keeping, such as watering plants and stray trash pickup, which shows a great pride in his business. I will stay at the Dreamer's Lodge on our next trip up there! read more

When I was pricing motels in the John Day area, I found this one to have among the cheapest rates. The other thing that made me more inclined to book a room there was the fact that it was located just a little bit off of Hwy 26, which is the main drag through town and a major commercial truck thoroughfare. Sure, it was only one block off Hwy 26, but that was enough to keep the noise of passing truck traffic very low. In-room amenities were as good as it gets in a small town and in this price range: microwave, mini-fridge, good wi-fi connectivity. The showerhead was a nice one! The place was plenty clean, and the bed was comfortable. Walls were adequately thick; we know that we had neighbors, but we couldn't hear anything. A thunderstorm passed over us that night and dropped a couple of rain torrents, yet the DishNet never faltered. It is noteworthy to many travelers that their DishNet channel lineup includes local network affiliates from Boise and Portland.....great for checking weather and road conditions regardless of which way you're traveling! AAA rated. Location is very central....within walking distance of most John Day restaurants and the Kam Wah Chung state park/wayside. But be careful not to miss it, since it is off the main road. There's only a small sign for it on the main road. It's really easy, though, if you remember that it's one block north of the only lighted intersection in town. read more

This is the third hotel I have stayed at in John Day, and it is my favorite, particularly for the price. Last time I stayed in John Day, I stayed at the Sunset Inn (now America's Best Inn, I think). It was so filthy and dark. Never again. This time I called the Best Western (as one poster humorously referred to as John Day's "Ritz"). They wanted $105 a night, while Dreamer's Lodge wanted just $55. After staying in both, I can say there is little difference between the two other than price and the Best Western looks more modern. I don't see how anyone can justify paying double the price for the Best Western unless having a pool/hot tub is life and death. Dreamer's Lodge is, as advertised, very clean. The furniture and fixtures are older, but all in working order. I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the bed was. The staff was also very courteous when I made my reservation and checked in. The one critique I would have of my room (#27) is that the bathroom faucet only had two modes: off and fire hose. It sprayed so hard that I had a hard time filling a cup with water. All in all, a great deal for $55. Next time I come to John Day, I will definitely be staying here again. read more

For what it is, this motel is worth five stars. If you hate the retro/1970s look, this isn't the place for you, but it's clean, comfortable and with a fridge and microwave in the room, it's very good. I contacted the front desk with a concern and they corrected it immediately. Super friendly. Very worth it for the money. read more

Retro fun at the Dreamers Lodge..... Immaculate, very moderately priced and well located. Unless you are snooty and do not like formica, check this gem out. I would stay again in a flash. Also check out the Outpost restaurant just a short walk through the parking lot. Excellent food so you can have cocktails early and then can have a safe walk to food.... Enjoyed our stay at Dreamers Lodge. Clean good location and the host was very friendly and accommodating with us traveling with our dogs and boat, he let us park close to our room to keep an eye on our boat. This is a good hotel for the area. It looks like the whole family is involved in running it and keeping it clean. It is old. There was an air conditioner in the wall that you turn on with a light switch, so you can't control the temperature. If it gets too cold you have to turn it off and turn it back on when the room gets too warm. There is no breakfast, but the rate was good and there are a few good restaurants in the neighborhood. read more

Well, it wasn't my dream lodge. That is for sure. But considering what there was to choose from in the area, I am not sure things get too much better. It was clean enough, quiet and it allowed pets. So that is the bonus. But the place was extremely out dated, rough tiny towels, dingy carpet (guess that is what you get with pet friendly places), and warn furniture. It reminded me of a cheap highway motel. A place where I dare not take off my socks, nor sit on the bed spread. Oh, and no breakfast...or free coffee. It is just your bare basics at this motel. However, it was only a night.....I'll get over it. But I don't care to stay here again. read more

The price was very reasonable for an overnight stay. We arrived at 8:30 pm and the attendant was personable. Our check in was less than 3 minutes, and we were headed to our room. The parking lot is dark, could use a few more lights, but is surrounded by a fence and seemed secure. The room was dated, but clean. For what it is the hotel itself wouldn't be bad , the price is fine and the beds are comfortable for what they are. The bad part about this hotel was that the room was not clean when we checked in. There was still garbage in the room and hair etc in the toilet and shower. The part that annoyed me the most was that at 8am the manager and maid decided to let themselves in to the rooms. We had 4 rooms at the time . They came into each of them in the morning and then again once we all left to go get breakfast, they came into the rooms again, turned off the heat opened the windows (mind you it was 34 degrees outside) and moved around my suitcases and computer. The computer was off and closed when I left the room and once I came back it was on again and in a different spot. Huge invasion of privacy. I would never stay here again, that's just not right. read more

Our larger family stayed in room 35, a full-kitchen suite upstairs at the end of the building. Great time! Ample free, off-street parking was easy to maneuver, even with our big Suburban (with "back porch" luggage rack). Though the motel is very close to Hwy 26 (the main street), traffic noise was not a problem at all; traffic drops to pretty much zero about 8pm. #35 has two bedrooms, each with a queen bed and twin bed. Beds were comfortable, sheets nice and crisp. The bath is in the larger of the two rooms, and is shower-only, no tub, so that might be a consideration for families with little ones who won't shower. The hot water did not fail us. :) Towels were older, but supplied in good quantity. We didn't lack, and that's with six travelers. The small bedroom is curtained off from the kitchen/dining area, which might be a privacy concern if two couples share the space, but for our family, it was great. The larger room has a solid door. This was the larger of the kitchen suites; the kitchen is full-sized, and actually bigger than my kitchen at home! It has a full-sized oven, range top, fridge, dishwasher, garbage disposal, and microwave, basic stock of pots, pans, and utensils, and a 4-seat dining table. Being able to self-cater so easily made the already-economical room (under $100 per night!) an even better bargain. There's plenty of room in the living area, with a rocker, love-seat, and full-size couch, plus entertainment center (free dishnetwork and WiFi--my geek family was very happy to see there was the Sci Fi channel, and our internet connection was fast and strong, even at the end of the building.) We were surprised by the closet space in the larger bedroom. Each room has a dresser, but the larger also has a full-length standard closet, slightly smaller closet near the bathroom, and full-length closet in the bath. While the building is older, the owners are very interested in making the place clean and nice. A short walk through a gate puts you at the back entrance to The Outpost (see my review); do not miss the cinnamon sticks there! Also within easy walking distance are two banks, a Saturday farmer's market, sit-down and fast-food restaurants, at least one tavern, a hardware store, a coffee shop,a pharmacy, and 2-3 churches. A very short drive gets you to the town's grocery, and a dollar store (Muzzy's 1-2-3) that can fill in the gaps in your travel needs really well. Dreamer's is also walking distance to the county fairgrounds. All considered, our Wednesday through Monday stay was great. We'll look at booking #35 at Dreamer's again next summer when we visit family! read more

The city sewer main plugged up and caused the drains to back up in our room. This problem affected several rooms plus the Best Western up the street. Up until that point, the room was satisfactory; very clean, several amenities (including shower cap!) and the manager was very friendly. At 5:30 AM we informed him of the problem in our room, he was very apologetic and had plumbers in the room shortly after 6AM. When we checked out he gave us a full refund on the room. We were very pleasantly surprised even though we had has some inconveniences that were not the fault of this motel. After all the dust had settled, we highly recommend this place. We will stay here again on our next trip through John Day. read more

I rate this motel as 4 star! Let me clarify; this is not the Ritz Carlton. This is after all small town America. This motel has a very retro small town American vibe. This is a great, retro hotel. It's clean, with good wi-fi reception and a central location. It's pet-friendly, with a grassy lot next to it where you can walk your pet. The rooms have microwaves, a small fridge and coffee maker. Water pressure is good and the beds are reasonably comfortable. The furnishings are distinctly late 70's, but are in good condition. I always try to stay here when in John Day, and have never been disappointed. read more
