Had a wonderful few days here, and highly recommend this place if passing through the beautiful John Day area. They have a classic retro-style here, with nice tile work and paint job. Also, it is SUPER clean and tidy. Lots of amenities in your room: coffee and coffee pot, mini fridge, and microwave. Lots of towels, even a shower cap! The owners are very nice and will help you feel comfortable and welcome. Definitely a great place to stay!

Picked this place because of the reviews. They were not wrong. Excellent value, spotless clean, nice traditional rooms and a happy surprise, two recliner rocking chairs. Finally on this trip, a spot to sit your weary bones snd relax before turning in. Off the main road at the fork and quiet.

Blurry picture, especially when watching HBO.

I have no idea how this place has 4 stars?! I'm bewildered. It is clean and everything is in working order. I'll give them that. Here is a list of the negatives: - popcorn ceilings - bed with only 2 pillows - cable TV has about 20 stations, but all the good ones are grainy and nearly unwatchable. - tiny, tiny extra-mini fridge. If you're forced to stay here for 3 weeks for work a larger, more typical hotel fridge would be better as in one that could hold a half gallon of milk for example. - smoking...apparently people can sit outside their doors and smoke as opposed to being a smoke free facility/grounds. - WiFi signal is extremely weak, almost unusable. The local 4G signal is far stronger. - No laundry - No pool, hot tub, or fitness room. - No breakfast. Several reviewers and even this hotel itself (motel technically) have mentioned and claim this place is "retro". There is nothing retro about this motel. It was built around 1960 so its architectural style looks the part and is hidious. One positive is the current owners are doing a good job keeping it running, clean, and in good working order. 4 stars?? Again, I don't get it. Maybe compared to the three other crappy hotels in this crappy town, but this hotel gets a strong 2 stars in the real world.

Parking lot is pretty claustro, but they do have a nice place to sit in the back and have a smoke if you want. Very clean, looks like homebrew remodeling and maintenance but both done at least with pride. It's very easy to miss if you're headed east on the highway, because it kind of sneaks up on you and looks like it might or might not be open. In a former timber town with limited opportunities, closed businesses aren't that rare. We had to double back to it. Not sure how it is in the summer, but if you like sleeping in a cold room, this was that rare place (in April) where partner did not immediately turn on the AC full bore. No need to do that this time, nor even to mess with the temp. Not sure how well the warming works because we never wanted it. If there was a major frustration, I'd say it was thin walls. All the signs (too many) that tell you what you can and can't do include some that specify quiet hours, and that's fine, but it does leave you turning the TV down very low because you've been hearing the neighbors' TV for hours.

The owner was quick with advice for places to eat and routes for our ride out of town the next day. Plenty of places to eat and drink within walking distance. And the prices were more than fair. I wish I could say you get what you pay for but unfortunately that's not the case! The room was just like the outside, old, dirty and outdated. Pillows were lumpy and completely unusable, shower had the pink mildew around the entire rim, very little water pressure and a hodge podge of mismatched soap, lotion and shampoo from other hotels! The sofa was so dirty we wouldn't even sit on it! All that said, we are not picky nor are we clean freaks! We knew it was a local hotel and had no expectations other than a comfy bed and safe location. Well, we expected the amenities promised of course, like the laundry facilities! Unfortunately I can't recommend Sunset Inn and we'll stay elsewhere next time.

We use Hotels.com and we thought we paid on line but when we arrived they ask for payment which isn't a big deal but as a business this would be a concern if we were reserving for an employee. Other that the window sill being dirty with dead bugs, it was clean. Just keep the curtains closed and you won't notice a thing. It's a little run down lots of drywall patches, multiple types of texture and paint. Carpet seems worn down but hey it's pet friendly. No, my dog didn't have an accident. JS The bed was fairly comfortable but the pillow was horrible. I had a tough time getting to sleep and when I finally did another customer got to their room at 12:30am. I could hear him/her walking around for about 30 minutes before the person went to bed I assume. Early morning wakers starting their cars right outside, made my dog bark (sorrry) so I got very little sleep but it's better than sleeping in the car. They have Keurig machine that had a pod in it from the previous person but no big deal just threw it in the trash and prayed the machine isn't gross. Made a cup, brushed the teeth, packed and headed out and down the road noticing the other placed I might try next time.
