It ain't gotta be pricey to for a stay well done! The managers were great on our recent post-holiday overnighter. You can find gems sometimes with the local, non-chain hotels. You get all you need here; genial hosts, clean room, comfy bed, warm shower, and a television or free WIFI for relaxing entertainment. Bonus: It's a half block from the Grubsteak restaurant for fantastic service and food. When you go, look for and say hi to Sebastian. He likes an occasional baby carrot too. read more

When checking in the guy working the counter looked like he just a lame out of a machine shop. He clearly had been fixing something. He was super nice though and got us checked in quickly. The room is what I would call 'refreshed old'. It's been given a bit of a facelift with flooring and furniture etc. You can see the several layers of paint in some areas. Even with that, this was a comfortable stay. The motel is also conveniently located to several places to eat within walking distance. Show your key at 1188 Brewing and you get a discount on your bill. Nice. read more

Short version: This place is a lot better than it looks. The value is great, considering that one of the chain motels downtown wants about twice as much. Parking lot is pretty claustro, but they do have a nice place to sit in the back and have a smoke if you want. Very clean, looks like homebrew remodeling and maintenance but both done at least with pride. It's very easy to miss if you're headed east on the highway, because it kind of sneaks up on you and looks like it might or might not be open. In a former timber town with limited opportunities, closed businesses aren't that rare. We had to double back to it. Not sure how it is in the summer, but if you like sleeping in a cold room, this was that rare place (in April) where partner did not immediately turn on the AC full bore. No need to do that this time, nor even to mess with the temp. Not sure how well the warming works because we never wanted it. If there was a major frustration, I'd say it was thin walls. All the signs (too many) that tell you what you can and can't do include some that specify quiet hours, and that's fine, but it does leave you turning the TV down very low because you've been hearing the neighbors' TV for hours. read more

The John Day Motel was a great stop after a long day of motorcycling. It's a solid, clean and comfortable room with friendly faces at the front desk. The owner was quick with advice for places to eat and routes for our ride out of town the next day. Plenty of places to eat and drink within walking distance. And the prices were more than fair. We have stayed here a number of times on our way through John Day, either on motorcycle rides or in our cars. It is always extremely clean, very quiet and it just a well maintained little motel. The owner is awesome as is all of her staff, they go out of their way to make you feel welcome! It is also by far the best value in town. Large and quiet rooms with a good fridge, microwave, DirecTV and strong WiFi and coffee in the morning! This is the place to stay in town. And we look forward to seeing you again soon! read more

Very clean, decor updated in a simple but tasteful way, and I was really impressed with the comfy bed! Granted, I had been in the road for 8 hours, but I am delighted I found this little gem. Spent a nice quiet weekend in John Day and the John Day Motel fit the bill. Located at the east end of the smallish town, it was easy walking distance to downtown. Other modest motels raised their prices to over $100/night during hunting season weekends; for the quality of lodging, that's really poor value. The John Day motel only went up to $70/night, and offered assorted discounts; not bad for a clean efficient place with fridge and microwave in each room. The host couple running the office were super-nice and had hot coffee waiting every morning. Since John Day is a "jumping-off" point for outdoor recreational destinations, having a fancy room may not really be necessary. The John Day Motel is ideal inexpensive place to rest and clean up after a day of touring. For history buffs, don't miss the Kam Wah Chang State historical site. read more

I am a single mom traveling with a grade schooler, and I felt safe and welcome here. This place was CLEAN and half the rate of the chain location in town. I appreciated the very hot water, mini fridge and microwave, and the fresh smelling room and sheets. I have a hard time sleeping on a bed that's not my own, but these beds were comfortable and I slept well. There was plenty of storage and a small table in our 2 queen, ground level room. It was clear that the owners have put effort into making this older building a nice place to stay. The folks who run it were very hospitable, checking in with me everytime I saw them to make sure we didn't need anything. There's a small outdoor space available to all guests with a fire pit and BBQ (wood/fuel provided), plenty of seating and a picnic bench. There was a beanbag corn hole type game that my kiddo and I enjoyed playing. The chairs and picnic table made it a nice location to stargaze from. Wifi signal was spotty, overall it was good enough to browse the web but not stream movies or games. As a parent this was a surprise positive because it gave me a break from the typical screen time related conflicts. There was a TV with cable and HBO/Cinemax, which we didn't really use. The only negative part of my stay was related to the room next door's ability to be utilized as an adjoining room. This setup led to being able to hear the neighbors through the shared door. The white noise from the heater/air conditioner mostly downed that out, and white noise from my phone placed on the other side of the room covered the sounds completely. This is a down-at-the-heels motel yet it is clean, the lighting is good and the bath tub is clean. The room exuded some kind of off-brand odor neutralizer, cloyingly sweet. The walls are paper thin so your neighbors are clearly understood as well as their television choices. When my neighbor used their shower I thought they were in my room. While the rooms are non-smoking it is allowed directly outside the rooms thus negating one's desire to not smell cigarette smoke. The beds have seen better days. Classic roadside motel on the outside; spotless clean and updated room on the inside, complete with microwave & fridge and comfortable bed. Justin greeted us at the front desk and got us quickly checked in along with a couple nice dining suggestions. The room had a nice heat/ac unit and the shower was refreshing in that it had generous waster flow compared to many hotels. Will be our go-to motel on out next visit to the area. read more

Can't say enough amazing things about the manager Rhonda!! She is so personable, friendly accommodating and just all around amazing! The room was very clean and had towels soaps and shampoo. At 7am they have coffee and light snacks for guests to enjoy. We had motorcycle tire trouble and Rhonda was beyond accommodating letting us stay past check out and keeping our bike in the parking lot until our rescue vehicle came. Do not have any hesitations about staying here. The property was clean and secure. The manager is always on site for 24h needs if necessary. RHONDA THANK YOU!! read more

This is a very clean and inexpensive motel. The sheets were soft and smelled nice and fresh. The people who run the hotel are kind and thoughtful. They have a great space for an outdoor hang and for the pups to chill. Don't judge a book by its cover. It may be dated, but it's comfortable. read more

This little motel was a godsend for us after traveling 12 hours over the snowy mountain passes. The owner was super nice and even turned on the heat for us ahead of our arrival. He also shoveled an area so our dog had a place to go potty. The room was super clean and looked recently updated. He also had coffee and snacks for us to take. Have been traveling on theW.coast for over 6 months, looking at all different types of REAL ESTATE, stopped by here for what we thought would be a week... Justin and Sebastian(his Incredibly sweet Dog) welcomed us, and we ended up staying for over 2 months...BASING OUT OF THERE... so if anyone should know how this place truly works... weve been to over 30 ho/motels in our travels, and NONE were worthy of any HIGHER RATINGS THAN THIS, and we stayed in a HOTEL on the water, $275/Night, and, without the spa, this one is/was just as good. BUT, ITS ALWAYS THE PEOPLE, not the place... JUSTIN HITS A GRAND SLAM !!! If youre staying anywhere in a 20 mile range of this location, and youre not staying here...Justin deserves a YHUGE RAISE, and Sebastian, as many dog biscuits as he can eat... without these two, this place wouldnt be the same, the only HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS in any place in this small 1 light town.... on this place... crazy fun, covered patio, great for those who smoke, etc... small grass area for the 4-leggers, great take away donuts, breakfast bars, buttttttttttttttt...... the best damn coffee around... we stayed in places, where there were no room coffee makers, and had some coffee, I wouldnt let my worst enemies/enemies drink, JUSTIN IS A RENOWNED CHEF AS WELL... he could make $$$$$$$$ with his BISQUITS AND GRAVY..to die for... if i COULD GIVE A 1000 rating... you'd see it here !!!! oh, and the beds, water, noise, blah, blah, blah, similar rating, yea, go the the $100/more a night Best WESTERN!!! but you will never, ever, get someone as GENUINE and awesome as JUSTIN... The owners and managers of this motel have made a concerted effort to clean & modernize it, and are great to work with. The rooms are clean, though dated, and the beds comfortable. The BBQ & fire pit area are a ton of fun, and downtown restaurants and bars are only a couple of blocks away. Will stay there again when I'm next in town. read more
