When planning the trip, I tried to find one house where we could dine together, and where everyone could have a proper bed in a proper bedroom. I considered all the various islands in the Caribbean. The more I searched, the more obvious my choice became... Villa Tuscany in the Wyndham Rio Mar resort, Puerto Rico. The house itself is stunning and very well equipped for a large group like ours. The villa has a large dining room table, and an adjacent covered patio with another large table so it was very comfortable to eat our meals. The views from the outside area were spectacular. Inside, the house has plenty of rooms to gather, including a pool table downstairs. There was also a ping pong table in the garage which we enjoyed. Plus surf boards, boogie boards, golf carts, a basketball court... really, there was nothing left out. The pool area outside is large and includes a hot tub, and enough lounge chairs for our whole group. Once again, the view is stunning. All the bedrooms were well appointed, and the beds and bedding very comfortable. There were plenty of towels and nice toiletries. We chose to use Jose, the chef, for all of our meals. He was amazing and provided a great variety of delicious meals. It's a tricky thing trying to make so many people happy, and he succeeded. He is a really nice guy, and we enjoyed the time we spent together. He and his staff know how to be present without being intrusive. I really can't say enough nice things about Jose. Really, everyone involved with our vacation was wonderful. Diana, the owner's daughter, is a real delight, and helped make everything happen. Her recommendations were spot-on, and she was always just a phone call away if we needed anything on site. Her local reps were extremely responsive, and made sure everything was perfect for our stay. Damaris helped us with all of our transportation needs, and excursions. With so many people, there was a high complexity in our logistics, and everything went according to plan. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect family vacation.

CREW was in PARADISE. The house accommodated the entire group comfortably, with room to spare. The house had every luxury and amenity you could think of. Diana, was AWESOME to work with from start to finish. She was never to busy to answer questions, even the simplistic ones. I could tell she genuinely cared about us being happy during our stay. Georgie and Kelia were a pleasure as well. Very knowledgeable on the local restaurants and shopping. They even entertained my aunts with the history of the house and the neighboring homes. Jose, the InHouseChef, was AMAZING. Very accommodating to the large group and we ALL ENJOYED the food. My I DO. CREW and I LOVED everything about the house.

We spent hours swimming in the ocean and the pool and enjoyed eating out at several cool restaurants, and got coffee every morning at a neat nearby coffee shop. We even took a horseback ride along the beach (the horses go into the water which was super fun). The folks at TC Villas made sure we had everything we needed - extra beach towels, a high chair and crib, etc - they met us at the villa and made sure we were all set and knew how to contact them for anything we needed. A guy checked us in to our room.. he seemed nice. 2 young girls helped us a little during our stay, they were great. Came down 1-2x and we wanted to ask some basic questions... This bitter older woman was there. She seemed like she wanted nothing to do with us. Wonder if she was the owner. Our room was ok. They had a variety of disposable soaps and stuff in bottles. Usually hotels will have a small disposable bar soap or something. They had a tiny bottle of body wash which we used to wash out hands with. Our room didn't really have any windows lol... There were 2 windows that basically faced inside the hallway. The shower pressure was not all that great. Also, the walls are thin. We could basically hear everything from anywhere close. Our neighbors were pretty active at night. It was like in the movies. We felt like we were s silent foursome lmao... They were bumping, grinding and moaning... The sound was so clear as if we were in the room with them lmao... The pool upstairs is.... Not something I would even consider getting into. You have to wonder how often they even get a chance to service and clean the thing. It's more like an oversized soaking tub. The great thing about this hotel was its location. Everything we wanted to go see was within walking distance. Literally no more than 8mins away. Sadly, the day we were leaving I was persuaded by the guy at the front desk to allow him to get a taxi for me. There was a 3 day festival coming and he says Uber/Lyft won't be able to make it to us because they are clearing the street to get ready. However Uber showed someone can come take us to the airport for $9. Anyway, I let the guy call his taxi person. Got to the airport and I felt like I got ripped off. Charged me $40. That was a slap in the face. Why align your hotel with a shady taxi service??? For the money and location this honestly isn't a bad spot. We just needed a safe place to sleep close to where we wanted to walk to.

Everyone at hotel stated that website and printed menus were out of date....no obvious signs stated different hours. Manager very aloof, but sh did take the qrcodes off the tables...printed menus and website still wrong. We encountered another couple who ordered food at last call. They were very unhappy that food served was cold and did not have any condiments. Next issue there is only street parking...we had to park .75 miles away from motel. Concerns about safety of leaving car on street overnight.

The restaurant: gorgeous décor, mostly great food, delicious drinks right on the beach at your lounge chair! The staff: all very friendly - I especially loved Joanit and Aminda, who made me feel at home! The service: very good except when I asked for a bowl for my dog, they refused. They said they only have outside bowls for the beach that can't be used inside the hotel rooms? Also they didn't want to give me a bowl from the restaurant initially, but then a staff member helped me out later. The location: in the gated community of Ocean Park, adjacent to the trendy neighborhoods of Santurce and Condado. A quick Uber ride can bring you to Old San Juan and Ubers arrived within 5 minutes from my experience. The rooms: honestly, nothing special. The cleaning could have been a bit more thorough getting the nooks and crannies. I was glad to stay in an interior room, as I wanted quiet. If you stayed in a beach-facing room, you could hear the music from the restaurant below. I loved that the room came with free lounge chair rentals on the beach. I also loved that wifi instructions and free snacks and drinks were in the room upon arrival. I did not love that there wasn't a hair dryer in the room. The A/C was powerful and kept the room cool. One thing that was a bit surprising was that the power went off multiple times one night. The first time was at about 9pm and the room went pitch black, which was kind of scary. I was searching for my phone flashlight, but the power came back on about 30 seconds later. This happened again at 2am. The internet in the room was good for streaming initially, but after the power outage, the internet cut out about every 10 minutes. Overall, I had a great experience and I would definitely come back!

Unfortunately, Raul and Jorge made an otherwise pleasant visit to San Juan stressful and traumatizing. We booked in June (6 months ago) it looked like the rooms were nice and the reviews were excellent. Our impression was that this was a boutique hotel with 25 rooms. The website even states that there is "Housekeeping staff is responsible for ensuring guest areas...guest rooms...are trim, sanitized, and spruce". The website also states "Check-in Gift - ...complimentary gifts to our beloved guests". Spoiler: there was no housekeeping service while we were there and there was no check-in gift. All this gave the impression that we were staying in something well-established and organized. Our impressions began to change when we received check-in instructions with a different address than what was advertised (first red flag). Check the street before booking ( 1050 Calle Del Carmen ); it is very narrow so Uber drivers do not stop on that street as it blocks traffic. Even a taxi driver wasn't able to find it without specific directions. To add, frankly, the area was dirty (we even had to step around dog poop on Casa Ciana's welcome mat when we checked out). All this to say that this was not the hotel experience we were looking for but we were okay so far; it's not like we never stayed in an Airbnb before. There were some deficiencies in the room. The bed creaked, the hot water was intermittent, and the tap for the shower was "sticky" in that it would require two hands to operate comfortably. Once again, all of these things were unfortunate but manageable given that this was essentially an Airbnb with 5 rooms (not 25) and no staff on site (check-in was through a door code). Now we get to the more serious things and my reasons for taking the time to write such a lengthy review. I have stayed at hundreds of hotels and dozens of Airbnbs. The procedure at every one of them has been to pay in full before/at arrival or to pay in full/a final balance at the end. Never have I been asked to pay anything in the middle of my stay. Now, that in and of itself is not necessarily a problem; there are different cultures and practices all over the world. My problem is: 1) This expectations was not set nor communicated in advance. 2) The hotel management took the extreme step of locking us out of the building, and away from our passports and prescription medications, about 24 hours after requesting the final payment and with our check-out scheduled for the following morning. Let me be clear on exactly what happened here. We paid for the reservation in June (about 6 months ago). About 6 months later, we started getting texts from the operations manager Jorge; it was unusual (given that all previous communication was by email) but pleasant. He gave us check-in instructions and asked what time we would be arriving. He also sent us places to eat and things to do (unsolicited but welcome). Unfortunately, I was not able to respond to any of his messages while we were in San Juan as I do not have an international calling/texting plan. Nevertheless, I read all his messages and appreciated them. On Friday around 3:30PM, I got a message from him asking for the final payment. I thought that was odd as we had already paid. Perhaps other people may have ignored the message but I did not. I got a screenshot of my PayPal invoice showing a balance of $0 and sent it to the e-mail listed on the invoice. In that e-mail, I explained that I could not call or text but was reachable by e-mail. I thought "That settles that" and continued on with my vacation. They started calling me the following afternoon. I was finally able to get a hold of the owner on What's App. They explained that only a deposit was paid in June. Less than two hours after that, they locked us out of our room and would not let us collect our belongings (including prescription medications and passports until we paid). We were forced to pay under duress.
