Vidler's is the largest five and dime store in the USA, and its historic wooden floors and vintage displays are a huge draw for tourists as well as the faithful locals who call East Aurora "home". Alongside peppermint sticks, lollipops burnt candied peanuts and cow-tails in the penny candy shop, you can get a bag of popcorn from the antique popcorn machine! For the price of one thin dime, you will be transported to the Victoria era where ladies dressed and fancy hats and gloves when they shopped. Who doesn't love the feeling of walking into an old store and seeing what treasures they can find? That's Vidler's in a nutshell. This staple of WNY is a little bit of a holiday tradition in my family. They have fun and festive window dressings and scenes made up for the holidays, and so many gift ideas inside. From crafts, toys, homegoods, and even office supplies, you can find almost anything here. They have some candy here too that's a little bit harder to find than your usual grocery store will carry including some international favorites. Each year around the holidays, they also have different guests show up in the store for the kids. This time when we stopped in, we saw Santa and Mrs Claus inside and the actual giant sled they used in "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" outside in the parking lot. It was so cool to see those added elements and make it almost an event. Year round, Vidler's is a great place to go and just browse the aisles. You get the nostalgic feeling again of being a kid in a toy/candy store. The only downside is some things are a tad pricey but supporting a local business is worth it. I've always wanted to check this place out, on my way to Buffalo we made a stop. This place has been here for over 90 years. Right on the Main Street , with this massive figure sitting on the roof welcoming you in. The store houses 75,000 items spread through four buildings and two floors. The candy section was my favorite, from the old fashion candy of our childhood.. wax bottles, candy cigarettes... but I had to buy some Charleston chews... chocolate, vanilla and strawberry flavored! They also have candy sold by the pound, I got some chocolate sponge candy. Right by the candy section is sandy mechanical horse the kids can ride for a dime. So many different departments to check out. Collectibles, key chains, glasses, wallets. Seasonal had all their summer stuff, garden tools and bird feeders. Household and kitchen area with all sorts of tools and jar foods. Jelly, spreads and baking sets. Large fabric and yarn area too. The toy area was very popular, so many little gadgets from polished rocks, wind up toys, games and figures. Stop in a discover a step back in time. read more

What a neat place to visit. Very large store with all kinds of knickknacks and such. You could browse for about an hour and not see everything. Definitely a cool place to go on a Sunday or Saturday afternoon. Things you never know you needed you can buy there. You always end up buying something. I grew up going to Vidler's, and during my recent visit did certainly find nostalgia in visiting this historic local institution after nearly a decade. Worth walking through if only for the eye candy, because there is plenty to see here. From home goods to kitchenware, and from toys to artisanal foodstuff, there does certainly seem to be something for every shopper here, so points for selection as well. That being said, with regard to purchasing anything, everything is rather overpriced, sometimes by margins of 100% or more. I get it, Vidler's is one of the oldest retailers and small businesses of its kind in the United States, and I wouldn't mind spending a few extra dollars to support a small business given their higher overhead costs. But at some point those, prices become extortionate, and I'm afraid to say that's the case here. Certainly worth a visit, though I wouldn't blame you if you weren't visiting to do any shopping. read more

I LOVE VIDLERS! I have been going here every time I come to East Aurora, Im from Washington D.C. and I was a child looking for toys when I first came. They literally have everything here besides perishable foods, they have candy, toys, keychains, hardware, kitchen tools, and jewelry all in this massive 2 store 5 & 10 store. Probably should be called a 1 & 2 store because the prices are low and everything is in good condition, the employees are happy to help anytime you need help and there is many checkouts scattered around the store, the store has 2 front entrances and 1 back entrance that leads to a big parking lot that is very convenient. This is a great place to wander around from one section to another discovering things you might not have seen in years (maybe games, lunch boxes, or penny candy) along with numerous items you never knew you wanted or needed, maybe a new kitchen gadget. Vidlers sells everything from the above mentioned games candy, & kitchen gadgets, to holiday items, clothes, books, gifts, cards, etc, etc. If you want it, they probably have it. Very cool place! So much stuff!! I got there about 20 minutes before closing time. They were super nice. This place is multiple floors and multiple rooms. Different things on each floor and in each room. From candy to cooking they have it all. I got some candy and a couple sodas as well as some Hot Nashville Dill Seasoning. Sick and tired of the same lame stores try this place. There's treasure in every nook and cranny. I personally was sick of looking at a white wicker bathroom garbage can so I went to Vidler's to grab myself a 3 gallon crock they use for pickling and I now use it for my Bathroom garbage can. I love it. This thing doesn't come off the floor when you go to change the bags. Every single time in the last 25 years that I've gone to the store the staff has always been friendly and informative. The prices ranged from moderate to a bit pricey, although I did check some items against Amazon and they were pretty comparable. I was able to get some nice Items for my grandkids. Coming here is truly an experience, and it will oftentimes take you quite a while to make it through the store because its huge, gets very busy, and there's SO much to look at! The employees are always so pleasant and I can always find something new here. There is ample parking located across the street behind the buildings as well as lots of street parking. Haven't been at Vidler's in awhile so when we had this beautiful day took a ride with a friend. I had price shock I know everything went up but they had things that were so over priced like lawn ornaments that I could get for less than 10 dollars at a nursery or a big lots selling for 50 dollars and candy bars for 3 dollars crazy. 98% of the customers are not from the town but travel and stop there because they do have alot of nice things but it will be awhile before I stop again it lost its charm for me! Vidler's is amazing and hard to put into words but I will do my best. Located on Main St. in East Aurora, it's a destination rather than just another store. This place is packed with nostalgia. They have thousands of items that would be of interest to all ages. You can find things like tin lunch boxes, unusual and hard to find kitchen gadgets, toys from your childhood that you thought were gone forever like cap guns, balloon driven little cars and boats, candies you thought they stopped making, Christmas ornaments, art supplies, school supplies, scented candles, board games, the list goes on and on. I even found a mask for my Halloween costume. Bring your dimes for the old fashioned popcorn dispensing machine. I have included a lot of pictures but not all 80 I actually took. The people that work there were extremely friendly and helpful. I have been there before but every time I go there I always discover new treasures. This trip I found Bacon Candy Canes, a Public Toilet Survival Kit and a selection of Wine Brownie Mixes (see pics). Go there, you won't be disappointed. I LOVE old-fashioned 5&10s, so I had high hopes for this one. For me it was a bit "meh", but it depends on what you're looking for. They're very strong on stationery, toys, candy, kitchen gadgets and home decor. The inside and exterior are very retro and have a 1960's vibe. I would suggest that you block out at least an hour for your visit to go through the large space and all the wares. They opened in the 1930's they have expanded several times so the store itself is huge, taking over 4 storefronts and has 2 floors. Right away you will notice this is a one of a kind place that has something fun for everyone. When approaching Vidler's you can't miss the red and white awning and the large scale figure "Vidler on the Roof". I remember coming as a child and the essence of the store and product offering is the same. It has been carefully maintained throughout the years. Upon entering you will notice Vidler's is well organized and set up like a department store with unique product offerings. They have a variety of nostalgic, seasonal and modern items including games, toys, crafts, kitchen, garden, home goods and candies. Make sure to have a dime on hand for the popcorn vending machine. I love the candy, specialty Buffalo items and throwback games. These things make me think about my childhood and a time when tangible games were a thing before technology took over. My favorite things here are the cookie cutters and old toys, but they now have lots of modern board games as well and every Wilton cake decorating tool you could need. There's always something seasonal on display, and I got an adorable snow globe, only to discover later when taking the price off that it was from target, but was assured that vendors aren't supposed to resell things and the rest were removed. Prices are a bit higher than buying online or at places like target, but it's still a fun place to shop. There's a room of fabric and buttons, and one of greeting cards, and one of tea kettles and popcorns. Great place to get unique gifts and reminisce. read more

If walmart and a flea market had a baby it would be this store, but my is it a massive baby. Encompassing a multitude of storefronts this place wastes no nook or cranny. Walking in I was immediately smitten, because I was surrounded by candy. All shapes, sizes and flavors of nostalgia. Traveling deeper, it had appeared that the Easter bunny had set up an assembly line of trinkets perfect for any basket. Every twist and turn led to a new department- candles, clothes, kitchenwares, fabrics...any of your heart's desires, including dates, as you're bound to bump elbows in the narrow passageways if you come on the weekend. The classic window decorations and the style of the building are so cute! The inside is equally adorable. This place seems to have EVERYTHING you could possibly imagine in a craft shop, drug store, souvenir shop, Hallmark, toy store or hobby shop. There are SO many different rooms with all sorts of themes. We honestly needed between one and two hours just to see everything! It gets pretty chaotic at Vidler's.around Christmas time. There are lots of special finds for gifts and decorations. I would definitely recommend avoiding weekends or right after work- it gets very crazy and busy! I much prefer to enjoy the store at my own, casual pace. My favorite aspect about the entire experience: the Vidler's employees are the sweetest and most wholesome people you will ever meet. This store is a tourist destination. Every person I heard talking in there was from out of town. And I heard a lot of people, it's a crowded place. Both with "stuff" and people. The aisles are thin and since there is a lot to see in every direction you have to walk slowly. If you need a card for someone you will find it here. No matter the emotion or the occasion you need it for. Huge selection. Huge selection of "non traditional" candies and chocolate bars too. Remember those candy necklaces from when you were little? You can buy the here. In bacon flavor if you want. Or regular peppermint patties (the small ones) too. All for reasonable prices. You a find a birdhouse here too. In various styles. Or some clothing item you may need. Or a small bag of fresh popcorn for a dime. Or something for the "space on the shelf". You know, the empty one. Anything you may want you can probably find here. It is the perfect place to find an original gift. The receiver will probably love it and your wallet will too. Prices here are more than reasonable. This is a place you can spend hours in. There is so much to see. So many trips down memory lane to go on. So many ideas for today to think about, I almost came home with a birdhouse. I was thinking of people to give gifts too. There are a lot of doors to get into this place and it's much bigger than you realize walking in one of them. Even the basement is being used. Oh. My. God! I can't believe it's taken me 30 years to visit this store for the first time! Seriously the coolest place I've ever been to. Nostalgic. I loved it so much! I ended up spending $250 on my first visit. Not too bad from what I hear, hahah. It was mostly on Christmas gifts anyway. The one thing I did get for myself is a mini replica of the kitty cat clock that I've always wanted! I'm super excited to hang that up (not to mention I have a black and white cat). I can't wait to come back here.
