    a sandwich on a plate

Me for lunch today: I'd like to order the roast beef special. Order Taker: Do you want lettuce, tomato and onion? Me: It's a roast beef special so it has coleslaw on it, right. OT: I think so. (giggles) Me: I don't need anything but the coleslaw... oh, and Swiss cheese. OT: Do you want mayonnaise? Me: No, coleslaw will do. OT: So no lettuce, tomato or onion? And no mayo? (giggles) Me: Nope, just coleslaw. On rye. Here's what I got. Roast beef, enough lettuce to choke 10 rabbits and 2 slices of Swiss on rye. (giggles) this was not a kid on the phone giggling.

Italian hoagie out of this world!

Just got my first hoagie at Vid's and OMG. It is beautiful. The finest ingredients including all the Italian meats. So my advice is call on your phone 856-461-5033 and ask for a Whole Italian Hoagie with lettuce, tomato and onion with salt, pepper, oregano and oil and vinegar with hot peppers. Just do it.

It's now open under new ownership, called Hartford Market & Italian Deli, with the same menu. Granted I've only been there once since it reopened, but the sandwiches are not the same. This went from being a can't miss sandwich shop to borderline terrible.

It's typical deli / convenience store in the vein of Wawa with an Italian focus (much like, say, Roman Pantry in Penns Grove). The kinda place that's got pickles, bins of rolls, prepared foods, coffee, taskycakes, and random dinner ingredients. Anyway, the sandwiches were great, almost busting apart from so much meat. Definitely worth a try. As for the convenience store half, it might be handy if you just need milk or a box of pasta on your way home. Otherwise I suspect most people will just drive into one of the worst parking lots ever only a mile down the street and run into ShopRite. UPDATE: Christina's has since minimized the store half of the establishment, focusing mostly on sandwich and side take outs. They still have an odd collection of overpriced Italian groceries (and Boost!, yeck), supplies appear to be dwindling. Hey, they had to give it a try... So now that the focus is on the food, I'm bumping their score.

Upon walking in the smell was phenomenal and I was excited ... but that excitement quickly faded as I saw pretty empty refrigerated cases and struggled to find a menu. Even after finding the menu it was absolutely underwhelming . My bf made up a sandwich he wanted to have them make and I decided to go with the roast beef sharp provolone and horseradish wrap but with an Italian roll instead of a wrap. The roll was about 6 hours away from being stale and I had to add my own balsamic glaze and roasted red peppers at home to give the sandwich some life. My bf enjoyed his sandwich way more than I did but did say it wasn't anywhere near as good as the market sandwiches were used to up north. Oh and the customer service was mid at best. There's no organization as it pertains to a line or ticket system so it's a little confusing too.

Passing though Riverside NJ I noticed the sign, "Portuguese Meat Market" and made her go around the block to park. I'm glad we did. Great butcher shop with all kinds of meats and Portuguese sausages. We bought a delicious chicken sausage (they brought out grilled samples for us to taste), a feijoada "kit" of assorted cubed meats and sausages, a smoked chaurico (chorizo) and a package of slim-jim type smoked sausages... plus a couple things from several shelves of spicy and flavorful condiments. The store seemed extremely well stocked with Portuguese food stuffs, and was very clean. Further on down the road I saw a hardware store selling clams and it all fell into place: we had clams and chaurico with tomato and corn for dinner. Love NJ in the summer.

Texas style BBQ. The beef ribs here are great and they always have them. The are nothing like what you get in the grocery store. Loaded with meat. Simply beautiful. They make all kinds of homemade Portuguese cured/dried/smoked sausage too. Delicious! I drive from PA to get there and now I do it regularly. I highly recommend making the extra trip to get the good stuff here!
