Saw mixed reviews here, just needed a snail, yep 1 snail, for daughter's aquarium. They were great ! Very nice young man showed us around, gave us a great education in snails, learned a lot. I'm sure not the biggest sale of the day, but you wouldn't know it. Helped my daughter pick out the perfect snail and bagged him up. Gave us instructions to acclimate snail into new aquarium. Was very impressed by his knowledge. The place itself is huge! If you need anything for a fresh or saltwater aquarium this is the place to go. Vienna Aquarium is a pretty decent fish store. From the outside they look small, but they are actually quite large. They seem to be moving towards fish-only. When they first opened they had tortoises and other reptiles, and I think even small mammals, but that section of the store has been replaced with pond supplies. As far as livestock goes they offer lots of freshwater, especially cichlids, angelfish, and goldfish + a little saltwater + turtles + koi. Nothing super unusual, but a large amount of fish. They have a limited selection of corals. On the supplies side they sell tanks and stands, pond inserts, a variety of very pretty rocks and wood, fish food, water additives, and more. Their prices are in line with other aquarium stores. Customer service is average. It's not the greatest store ever, but it's probably your best option in the Leesburg/Ashburn area. read more

You tell me, did I pay too much for a shubunkin and common goldfish? Which somehow both ended up being $15 each. I wasn't given a receipt with the prices broken out. It was just the total sale price. Which leads me to believe that they probably make up their prices after they size you up of your knowledge about fish keeping. I'm new to the hobby so I'm definitely the bigger fool here. I really like supporting local businesses and I never give bad reviews. Anyway, I was told these fish were imports, I asked where they were from they told me the far east. I'm mostly just disappointed that I would go out of my way to support a local business only to realize Ive been swindled and should have just gone to PetSmart and pay $2 for the same fish. Also, the plants are all the same price $10 no matter the size, big, small, unhealthy. Unfortunately, I got some bad advice, I mentioned I have .25 ammonia in my tank, they even said the goldfish would be fine even in a 20 gallon tank. Despite my water changes I make very frequently, the bioload is still too much for just two goldfish, especially since they are scavengers and create a lot of waste. They'll test the water for you, but it's only with test strips. read more

My husband and I used to shop here a lot when we were in our marine fish phase. Thank god we found a terrific store up in Randalstown, MD--quite a hike since we live in Fairfax, but worth it. The people who run Vienna Aquarium wouldn't know good customer service if it bit them on their asses. Wow what a dump. This place is clearly run by meth smoking hoarders with A.D.D. Most of the saltwater fish were plain and way beginner and clearly not happy. And to tell me that a two pollop orange mushroom frag is $65.00.....hilarious. These giys are a joke!!! Most of the tanks werent even lit, full of water, or life!!! Dont even get me started on their display tanks...=PATHETIC!! To top it off it it's really grimey, unorganized, and at times reminds me of something strait out of "The Devils Rejects". I'm sorry but the flickering, rusty florecents was just too much. It makes me really sad to have to give the review but I gotta save someone from driving all the way out here to waste their time. read more

Overall, a pleasant experience. I visited this pet store with trepidation after reading the reviews, and have since come back numerous times. Yes, smells a bit smokey on the weekends (I think that's when a heavy smoker works there) and is a bit dingy, but overall I've found it to have a great selection of fish, all of which look healthy, and well cared for. They have some unusual fish, not available at PetCo, although the prices are a bit more expensive. The owner was happy to special order particular specimens for me should I wish, and was very knowledgeable about plants when I came in last week. So, overall pros: Good selection, healthy aquariums, ok prices, and is quite local to me. Friendly staff. Cons: a bit dingy, somewhat expensive, chaotic interior. I'm happy to support local business, and will continue to come here unless there's a reason not to. read more

Having frequented the store many times over the past couple months, things have been progressively getting worse, fish stock seems less and less on a week over week basis. They make promises that they will have fish in "next week", but never do. I have found other stores in the area for my Marine tank needs, their freshwater supply seems to be a little better but still less than it used to be. I hope things change, because they are definitely more local to me and I would love to continue to use them. read more

While Vienna Aquarium & Pets does have a large selection of fish, the quality of fish and knowledge of some of the employees is somewhat lacking. For example: Some months ago I went in to browse and saw an aquarium overstocked with veil angelfish. On top of the sheer amount of fish in the aquarium, almost all of the fish had ragged, torn fins. I brought this up with an employee and was told that that is how these fish are meant to look. Now, I grew up with my father breeding and selling show-quality freshwater angelfish for a living; I know what these fish are supposed to look like. I bought a ranchu goldfish from here last year and it's still healthy and beautiful today

It doesn't look like some fancy petco or petsmart but it doesn't matter if it looks nice. They have a huge selection of fish. The people that work there are very nice once you get to know them and they know about there fish. It was weird the first time but there cool now. There fish aren't sick like the petco or petsmart fish. There a bit pricey but I've lost over $500 to petco's fish in 2 months so I say paying an extra dollar or two for a fish is better then getting a sick fish. You got people that know what there talking about and healthy fish. Nothing to complain about. read more

I like this place a lot. The owner and his son seems they love what they do. The are very honest and give you advice all the time. We bought 55 gal. Fresh water tank. They help us to get fish and gave us tips how to assemble, get fish(in several parts) and plants, so fish all happy and most importantly alive:) yes, maybe you can find better deals in chain pet stores for supplies, but I don't mind to support local business especially when I see owner is really caring person:) read more

My husband and I went into the shop yesterday with the intent of purchasing 2 clown fish and 1 rabbit fish; we usually buy from this little hole-in-the-wall shop because they usually have more than a regular pet store. Right from the beginning, we were approached by a sales associate, who was extremely knowledgeable/friendly and most importantly, patient with answering all of our questions. We did not feel pressured to buy even though we were asking a lot of questions. Overall, we had fantastic customer service and yes, the location may not look like a commercial PetCo, but rest assure, these folks know more about caring for a saltwater tank/fish. Although they did not have a rabbit fish, we were able to pick up 2 adorable percula clown fish who are now happily acclimmated. :-) The sales associate also closed the sale by asking us to call if we have any questions/concerns re: the fish we purchased, which we also appreciated. read more

I absolutely love this place. They operate from a large warehouse. They have impressive displays of large aquatic animals (Koi fish, soft shell turtles, hard shell turtles) and row after row filled with different species of fish and plants. In a separate warehouse they have tank decorations and underground pond setups. We got great service, lots of selections and are pleased with the quality of the items we bought. Well, today was the last and final time we will ever go into this place. I've been doing the hobby for 20+ years and this is by far the worst store ever. We went in to buy replacement bulbs or at least order them. After looking at the few fish and corals they have I was finally approached for help on the way out. I asked how much the little Hippo Tangs were and he went and asked the owner. I got a price of 65.00. Then I asked where the lighting was, he said "look around it's here somewhere". I did and finally saw the little stand where a few old dusty bulbs were. I will never, never, ever, ever, ever, ever go in this store again. Time to close up...an empty store would be better than this business being in there. Bring a 4 wheel drive to navigate the parking lot. read more

I really enjoy this nice local fish store! My daughter and I try to get in there on the weekends as the owner once told me they tend to get new stuff in on Fridays. Everyone that works there is knowledgeable about all of the animals and super helpful. Great variety of fish. Very clean tanks. I have now been here twice and have never seen a dead fish in a tank. They have gorgeous veiled angels. The angels are larger so you will pay for the maturity. They had a really great live nitrifying bacteria that helps cycle my new tanks faster. They packaged the fish really well for the long ride back to DC and when I opened the bucket they had placed a few free fish food samples in with the bags of fish. I am now a loyal customer simply because of their patient and kind customer service. I bought a new tank kit from Pet Smart and had 7 fish die in two days because many important things were not addressed from the beginning. My husband has a co-worker who shops exclusively at Vienna Aquarium and recommended we go there. From that first day, Chris, the owner has been very kind in trying to help me overcome new tank syndrome; chemical imbalance; fish stress from a too-large, bullyish tiger barb; a withering red tailed shark; and ich. One of his employees, Logan, has also been very patient and kind in answering questions many times per week by phone or in store. Yes, I call or visit their store at least once a week as I am trying to get my new tank right and seem to have a lot of issues and questions. They are very encouraging and reassure me that I will eventually get my tank healthy and begin to enjoy this new hobby of ours. I should mention that there is another employee who has been quite rude and condescending, but I try to avoid him. Twice now he has told me not to panic and just calm down as I was calmly explaining my tank situation. He also scolded me rudely for looking at information online that turned out to be poor advice. The store in Vienna is unsightly, but their variety and health of fish more than makes up for it. They are moving this spring to Leesburg into a brand new store that will be great! I take my kids in with me all the time and no one has ever yelled at them for looking into the fish tanks as another person complained. read more

I was referred in by my brother-in-law who is quite an aficionado of koi Chris, the owner, carries a beautiful selection of koi and is very helpful in selecting great specimens. His knowledge is wonderful and he is very helpful later over the phone. The fish I bought were pricey compared to my former buying habits but, well worth it. When you first walk-in, it's a bit on the intimidating side, but once you meet the owner and his staff, you will quickly learn how much knowledge and experience this place holds. I have been shopping here for years (11 years to be exact) and I swear the experience is better each time (almost like the family doctor who finally lightens up with a couple of jokes). I heard a rumor that Vienna Aquarium has bought their own commercial spot in Leesburg, VA, and from what I hear, it will make it the premier koi (hopefully spelled right) and marine fish spot on the northeast coast if not the entire eastern seaboard. Yeah, maybe I am drumming them up a bit, but I will travel to Leesburg any given day to get the knowledge on aquatics I need. I hope this helps. read more

Don't let the posted negative reviews fool you. I don't know what the old place in Vienna looked like, but the new place in Leesburg is nice. In northern VA, this may be the best place for koi and pond supplies. I started going to this place this summer. I recently installed a pond and purchased several koi and goldfish from them. The employees may be young but they are extremely knowledgeable and professional. They have provided me with excellent customer service by taking the time to answer all of my novice questions and alleviating my stress as new pond owner. Definitely check this place out for beautiful quality fish, supplies no other northern VA pet store has, and great customer service. read more

I had to stop coming here. It is super expensive and customer service is a joke. I find that a local chain pet store has a friendlier and more knowledgeable staff (and they are waaaayyyyy less stuck up about it). It seems a chore to get information out of these guys, their plants are expensive and snail ridden, and die within a month of purchase. I have actually bought a fish here that apparently had ich and gave it to my entire tank with no survivors. read more

the store looks really tiny from the outside, but once you get inside, its set up really nicely. go in through the front door and to the right is all the fish. their selection is mostly made up of cichlids and rainbowfish with a selection of some other freshwater tropical fish and then a plethora of saltwater fish. my only complaint is that the fish were not labeled properly so unless you know your fish well, you won't really know. we got there right before closing, and the staff did not seem like they wanted to help at all. we were only there to browse since it was our first time. maybe my opinion will change once i buy something from them and am able to talk to the staff. read more

This was one of our stops on the quest to find a marine supplier. The store was ok but left alot to be desired. The tanks were a little dirty and dark. The set up for the marine fish was less than adequate for alot of the species. There was only one guy working who seemed nice but looked pretty busy trying to take care of everything as well as 2 young kids. They had some decent livestock, some hard to find fish, but the prices even on very common breeds were very high. If you are supplying or setting up a pond however they have EVERYTHING and lots of it. We would probably stop in if we were in the area to check out the livestock but more then likely wouldnt make the drive from Ashburn to come here. read more

Very disappointed in this place. We bought an aquatic turtle here, and, not having done any research on how to care for them, feel that the shop should have given us much more information before selling us the turtle. Should have told us there was much more involved than what we thought. We were obviously clueless when we came in, and were not given enough information. Had we known then what we know now, we probably would not have bought this animal. Also, the shop did not tell us about, or sell us, the appropriate lighting needed, so our turtle got sick. After doing much research online, ourselves, we finally have the right habitat set up...but it was no thanks to the shop. Very irresponsible. Would definitely not go back. read more
