First time coming to Viet Hoa Chinese Herbal Store as we were recommended to try here as the store we regularly go to were out of a specific ingredient. Viet Hoa is located in Chinatown, along Maunakea St, near what used to be Happy Garden. There's only metered parking or in the Municipal Parking garages. During these Covid Times, mask is required and you're not allowed to enter the store. You will be helped at the door. Viet Hoa does have an array of Chinese herbs and more so boxed and packaged medicine as well as other special Chinese delicacies. You won't see the classic rosewood Chinese apothecary cabinets here! The owners were nice and helpful, and got what we needed. Everything was wrapped nicely. The only issue was the price as it was almost double more expensive than another herbal store. I like to think it's because the herbs are higher quality from a more reputable supplier, but I can't confirm it. It could all just be the same. Overall, the price did sting, and it's not very respectful to not take your order since they carefully picked and weighed all the herbs and then wrapped it up in individual packages. It's like picking up takeout and your food is packed, but you suddenly decided to not get it. Next, it's probably better to ask for the exact price first so there's no surprises.

Since I was in Chinatown decided to see if I can find these particular cough drops I picked up from Las Vegas . Luckily I took a picture by posted this Herb shop in Las Vegas so I had a picture to show the salesperson of this cough drop . Came across this Viet Hoa acupuncture herb shop located on Maunakea . I passed by this place many time but didn't have any reason to stop by . This time I had a reason so i got to the door and there a table so you cannot go into the shop . Of course still practicing Covid19 protocol which is fine . A nice lady greeted me and I showed her the picture of the cough drops I was looking for . To my surprise she had it I was so happy so i purchased 3 boxes . I ask her if this product was popular and she replied yes . So next time if I run out I know where to go instead of Las Vegas . This throat lozenges taste little like honey, mint favor and ginger . It really helps soothe your throat better than the off the counter stuff . Support local and thanks for reading my review

Seems to accept insurance for Accupuncture services (HMAA, UHA, ...).

Chinese medicine... an alternative/supplement to Western medicine???…read more When I was a small kid, my popo (Chinese grandmother) used to give us all kinds of Chinese medicine. *There were topical ointments like Tiger Balm, bok fa yow (white flower oil), and hoong fa yow (red flower oil) that heated up the skin and probably were good for circulation, muscle aches, and congestion. *There were liquids made out of alcohol - yok jow. It seemed like leaves and twigs were soaking in the bottle to make a brown liquid. Popo would rub our bruises with it. OUCH! *There were potions that she would boil - they sure were pungent and tasted horrible. I don't remember the purpose for drinking this. *There were po chai pills that looked like little metallic balls. We'd swallow the contents of the whole container and our tummy aches would go away! Later, I heard that the pills contained lead...lol... and were discontinued! After a few rounds of these "treatments", I learned to not complain to Popo because I didn't want to go through this torture...haha! Her remedies were questionable to me! In more recent times, when my dad had cancer, he tried everything - chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, reiki, and Chinese medicine. He would boil packets of herbs from this Ding Hong Tong store (after they measured his blood pressure and pulse) and drink the liquid. Somehow the combination of these methods helped him endure 16 years of cancer! Today, my mom was looking for some "Chinese cough drops". She had run out and wanted more. She said that they worked to soothe the throat and that they even freshened the breath! I had to try it! Haha! We found "Golden Throat" at Ding Hong Tong. These lozenges don't contain menthol, but it sure feels like it! It must be the peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil that creates a vapor-like presence in the mouth! Interesting! They come in a box of 12 lozenges for $3.00. Service here was quite helpful. English was spoken and... Golden Throat was being consumed by the cashier! Whoa! I'll be back!

I like to go see him whenever I have a cold/sore throat, because I prefer to have Chinese herbal medicine to cleanse my body. The medicines are bitter though, so I always have to chase it down with some candies. I highly recommend this doctor if you are looking to see a Chinese herbal doctor.

Highly recommend!!…read more My husband found Dr. Wong after a different local acupuncturist turned out to be mediocre (not "bad," but...mediocre) for our needs. I am so grateful that he found Dr. Wong. She and her entire team have been WONDERFUL!! Dr. Wong is extremely smart, knowledgeable, experienced, conscientious, patient, compassionate, and kind, with decades of experience under her belt. Her English is very good, which is important to me because I can't speak Chinese and I always have a lot of questions. She has used a combination of electroacupuncture and herbal prescriptions to help my body become stronger and better balanced following a major life disruption. My husband and I just survived a wildfire that burned our house and our entire town of Altadena (in Los Angeles) down in January. We were extremely fortunate not to have experienced any fatalities on our street, but the wildfire initially displaced almost one hundred thousand people, including our very dear neighbors and friends, who in turn did lose neighbors of their own to tragic fatalities in the fire. We have had a lot of practical/logistical and emotional stress to deal with in the survival aftermath, even though thanks to God and love and support from friends, our little family came out of the situation remarkably intact and ok. Dr. Wong's treatments have been crucial in helping me with sleep, energy level, mood, pain, circulation, mental/emotional/spiritual attitude, and releasing liver/kidney/heart chi stagnation (among so many other important post-wildfire aspects of wellness) and in helping me to manage middle aged medical ailments (menopause, osteopenia, changes in my eyes, changes in digestive function, etc.) so that I can have the stamina to help our little family adjust to new life here on Oahu. I am calmer, I sleep better, my fingernails are more pink (indicating much better blood health and blood circulation), and I am experiencing improved digestive function since switching to Dr. Wong's care. So far (knock on wood), I am not showing any signs of PTSD from the wildfire, even though it would be completely understandable if I did. I have been in long term recovery for C-PTSD from other causes, and Dr. Wong's clinical experience with using TCM to treat PTSD is extremely helpful for my longer term healing and overall health. Tammy, Dr. Wong's assistant, has superhumanly sensitive fingers that are able to adjust electroacupuncture electrical current strength to EXACTLY the level that my body needs on any given day. She creates a safe, client centered environment in which I feel free to call out five minutes into my treatment session to ask for a slight increase in electrical current levels, after my body has had time to acclimate to initial current settings. I am never made to feel embarrassed or ashamed that that's the method my body seems to need, even though it's more work for Tammy to come in a second time for a mid-session adjustment on the electrical current intensity. I very much miss my previous acupuncture doctor (Dr. George Shi at A Beautiful Day Spa in Pasadena, Los Angeles). If you are ever in Los Angeles, I hope you will give Dr. Shi a try! For here, for local context, I am so grateful for Dr. Wong and her team for helping me through an incredibly difficult life situation and for helping me to deepen my understanding of TCM principles and pono striving right here on Oahu.

It is not bare so allow yourself 5-10 min. This is my first visit here and definitely will not be my last. James greets you at the door and I needed to use the restroom as soon as I arrived. Luckily there is one available right in his office. He shares with a sleep lab. It's very clean and welcoming. When I head for my seat I notice there is a chilled bottle of water waiting for me.....just what I needed. We go thru a series of questions, he checks my pulse and tongue. He explains the things that I am experiencing from his exam and is point right on with everything. Amazing. The treatment room has a hint of lavender scent with easy music playing. This really helped to make me feel calm and comfortable. James gives his instructions and leaves the room for preparation. I get massaged twice a month for this pinch nerve in my upper left back that I have had for 3 months now. I have been mixing deep tissue, lomi lomi, Thai. This has helped in maintaining it from getting worse but seems to come back after a few weeks. My sister recommended cupping with James. I am so happy that I listened to her and came in for treatment. James starts with some pressure point massage then into the cupping. Wow! What a different feeling, massage is pushing down and this is pulling up. It feels like blood is able to flow in places that it needs to go for optimum healing. He left them on for 8 minutes. I fell asleep as next thing I knew he was back in the room. James coupled my cupping with acupuncture. I didn't even feel the needles as they were being placed. I hate needles, can't even watch when I donate blood. I was freaked out at first knowing that I was going to get acupuncture but after the first needle that felt like nothing I was ready for this. I waited a few months to write this review because I wanted to grade the pinch nerve. I am happy to say that after my first treatment the pinch nerve is gone and has not come back. Everyone should try cupping at least once!! Acupuncture was awesome too!

James, the acupuncturist, was friendly and knew what he was doing. He was able to tell me what was going on with my body just by looking at my tongue and listening to my pulse from my wrist (something that true Eastern medicine practitioners do). He wanted to combine cupping (using "cups" and fire to release negative energy and such from the body) and accupuncture however I have really sensitive skin and did not want to have the red marks all over my back especially since I was going out that weekend, so we did the needles in my target areas - I had a pinched nerve in my neck area and some other areas to help relieve other things. Afterwards I felt really relaxed and my pinched nerve was no longer there and I was really glad that I took care of it before it got really bad and that James knew what he was doing and targeted the right areas. He was very accommodating with my crazy schedule and I was able to make an appointment a few days beforehand. He has two different offices so check to see when he's in town.
