This grocery store has helped me find a good broom for my apartment. They have excellent prices on my favorite instant ramen, even flavors of Mama brand ramen that I had never tried before like pad Thai! I've been shopping here with my mother ever since I was 5 years old; I'm turning 40 next month. Viet Hoa is one of the oldest markets in Argyle. I love this grocery store because they sell a wide variety of Asian snacks, seafood, meat, drinks and Asian sauces from countries like: Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, China, Japan, Korea. I remember coming here one summer day years ago with my son; he started to feel lightheaded due to the summer's heat and the male owner told me to grab anything to drink and eat and he sat my son down on the stool and started feeding him. That memory really touched my heart and he even carried my son to the car. This place definitely holds a special place in my heart because of the owner's kindness and the fact that it's one of my mother's favorite places to shop. It's always busy especially on Sundays! I highly recommend this grocery store. They have a small parking lot next to the grocery store but it doesn't fit many vehicles. I usually just park next to the storefront if there is space available; if you live around the neighborhood you can also walk. Before there was 'Seafood City' or any other grocery store on Argyle; 'Viet Hoa' was the original store that provided all the Asian ingredients that our families used in recipes. read more

I've been to Argyle a few times to eat or stock up on banh mis, but I've never really explored the area. My family along with my sister were wandering to kill some time before lunch, and I put this as a spot to check out. Some backstory: we're Filipino, and my sister who lives on the northside was asking me where we could get some ingredients for her to make our dad's recipe for pork barbecue. The only place I knew was Seafood City which is quite far without a car. You can probably see where this is going - turns out Viet Hoa has pretty much all the Filipino sauces and spices she's been looking for. Also a large selection of Filipino snacks. Who knew this Vietnamese grocery covered more of Asia? They even have a small selection of baked Filipino goods, but they didn't look fresh enough to buy (check out nearby La Patisserie P for that). I can't speak for other Asian countries, but this is a great grocery for stocking up on Filipino essentials, and the kind of Asian produce you won't find at the big grocery chains in town. I'm definitely planning on stopping by again when I'm in the area. read more

Really awesome Asian grocery with a wide selection. I've bought hot pot supplies, plates and bowls, cheap veggies, and a whole bunch of Asian goods. It definitely has that classic Asian grocery vibe to it, like it's been around feeding the community for a while. They have everything you could want and more, and it's just fun to pass by the rows of bak choy, salmon heads, balut by the dozen, and more. Whenever I'm up on Argyle I make sure to bring a shopping bag because the grocery shopping there is fantastic. I'll be the first to admit that I am definitely not sure what most of the products in the store are and that I can't read a majority of the labels, but that usually adds to my enjoyment. Sometimes I go with a recipe in mind and find the ingredients from there; other times I might pick up an ingredient I'm unfamiliar with and then learn how to use it after the fact. Most recently I picked up mushroom powder that can apparently be used for making flavorful broths and sauces. My favorite part of Viet Hoa, aside from the service, is a section I missed through the main area past the cash registers--it's the protein and produce area. The produce is always gorgeous and well-priced, and don't even get me started on the amazing selection of mushrooms. In the fridge and freezer section I usually pick up tofu and dumpling wrappers. The store's staff is super sweet and a major reason I enjoy going back time over time. read more

This is our go-to place for Asian ingredients. Much less hectic than the store south of Argyle on Broadway. Prices are very reasonable and the checkout is efficient. Parking lot on the side of the building. We shopped here recently to get potsticker wrappers and a fellow customer guided us to the frozen foods section where they were stored. Also picked up some Prince of Peace ginger candy and tea, and our favorite hot chili oil. Oh, the potstickers turned out delicious! read more

This has become my favorite place to grocery shop since autumn 2016. I shop here every week for noodles, sauces, produce and sometimes meats. I'm still learning but try to buy something new every week. Today it was the Rice Noodle w/ Dry Shrimp that was made up the street at Ducks Foods. A month ago I took the Asian-American rockstar Rona Rougheart shopping with me and she suggested the Japanese Udon Noodles and this has become a staple of my winter diet. I crave it. They also have great Asian Pears but the price fluctuates between $5.50 and $7.50 for 3 pears depending on the season. There is a great fish selecting and they also sell kitchenware and I've bought a lot of bowls, soup spoons and chopsticks here. They can get pretty busy especially on weekends but the checkout is much faster than other grocers in the area.I cannot say enough great things about Viet Hoa Plaza. read more

Generally, I stop by Viet Hoa after a dim sum or pho run and drop in to get my favorite snack in the world: Shrimp Chips!!!! They sell Calbee Shrimp Chips in single serving, 4 servings, and big-ass bag sizes. They also sell all sorts of snacks such as peanut brittle, Pocky sticks, White Rabbit Candy, as well as various sweets in gelantinous form. Are you looking for strange Asian cooking ingredients? You'll easily find them here from unique herbal packets, strange veggies and dozens of sauces and oils to make some ill stir fry. Don't have a wok? Don't worry about it - they sell them! Need some animal intestines? They got 'em too including a butcher in the produce area. Frozen asian snacks such as shumai and potstickers can be found in the back along with the sweetest soy milk you'll ever drink. Holy ramen. I came here to hoard for the winter and my empty pantry shelf, and I hit the instant noodle jackpot. I used to go to Tainam, and they too, have a great selection of instant noodles... but this place has the ramen of my parent's choice (i.e. my childhood in a plastic packet): the Nissin instant noodles with the little blonde Japanese dude on the package. FOUR DIFFERENT KINDS TOO. Winner. I ended up with an entire basket of instant noodles: Thai tom yum shrimp flavored, Korean spicy seafood flavored, kimchi flavored, Sapporo miso flavored, and lots of little blonde dude Nissin ones. These aren't your 20c college Maruchan/Top Ramen things. When Asians eat instant noodles, they eat these. Come buy some - they come in boxes too. The rest of the market, or the non-ramen section, has a great variety of things that you would want to find in an Asian grocery. Their seafood section is pretty awesome. Have you ever woken up one morning with the insatiable urge to make your own spring rolls? Bubble tea? Pho? Ok, maybe it's just me and most people would prefer $10 take-out, but there is virtually no ingredient that has come up in any of my Thai, Vietnamese, or Chinese cookbooks that I haven't been able to find at Viet Hoa. I initially went in because it was down the street from some of my favorite pho places, but I've kept coming back to it because it's one of the rare Asian grocery stores where I feel like I can take my time, walk around, and examine everything on the shelf without customers or employees looking askance at me. There have been evenings where I've spent at least an hour reading the labels of all the sauces and the cans before picking out two or three things to try and no one has said a word. Even better, the groceries are cheap enough that I'm not nervous about taking risks. I might not know what herbs I've just bought or what canned jackfruit is supposed to taste like, but if I can get out of there with a basket full of groceries and some produce for ten dollars or less, it really doesn't matter if I get tired of the 200 green tea bags before I finish them. It's not the best place to look for Japanese items (though I've found enough Pocky and Hello Pandas to satisfy my nostalgia for my Northern Jersey childhood), but the selection of (especially canned, dried, and frozen) Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, and Filipino items is extensive to the point of being overwhelming. Among Argyle grocers, Viet Hoa has a good overall selection. However, it is crowded and I find dry goods are better shopped for elsewhere on the strip. That said, the selection of seafood and produce here is much better than most and this is where I go for these items. The frozen selection is also good, and the herb selection is decent. The herbs are mostly pre-bagged though, so be prepared to pay for whatever quantity they feel like selling you (don't get me wrong...they're still reasonable sized bags). They also have a parking lot, but it is often full on the weekend. This place is only a block from Hoa Nam though, so usually I park on the street and hit them both. By the way, where ever you go around here...Thai and Vietnamese selections are far cheaper on Argyle than they are in Chinatown. read more

Small aisles, the smell something fermenting, checkers in a rush to get you out-- these are just some of the wonderful things about this grocery store that have had me coming back since I was in college. They have everything you need. And if they don't have it, then you don't need it, honey! This place is especially impressive for the pan-Asian cook. Pinoys, Viets, Chinese, and Malays will have their fill of everything they need to make a feast. I could spend hours in the snacks, ramen and halo-halo sections of the store. If you are a first timer to an Asian grocery store, bring a local so as not to be intimidated! Or...just go! It's an adventure. Tips: - Weekends are crazy packed, and so is the parking lot. There is usually a guy there to help you get in the small spaces (and out) but street parking is usually open if you look around a bit. - Fresh Filipino longanisa is available, and the butchers there are great. They will cut the pork in any way you like, right then and there, which is so much better than the pre-packaged chunks of pork belly or other meat. Just go up to the counter and tell them what you want. - Freshly made Vietnamese banh mi is for sale on weekend mornings. - If you are lucky, on Saturdays and Sundays they will have a special selection of hard to find fruits for reasonable prices-- like Philippine mango, mangosteen, and rambutan. - For those looking for the brooms they make in the Philippines, they have them! Yay! I've gone to the other fancier, more modern grocery stores on Argyle, and I still come back here time and time again. read more

Viet Hoa's one of my go-to's for Chinese groceries, despite never really knowing the name for the longest time (and actually getting momentarily confused with Hoa Nam). I've never really been burned going here, and I appreciate that a lot in a grocery store - the produce has largely been good, as have the fish and meat that I've bought, and the prices are fair. While they might not carry everything that I might be looking for (forcing me to walk a couple extra blocks to finish my shopping) their selection tends to cover the majority of what I want to stock for a week. I've been able to quickly find sauces and seasonings, cans/cartons of some of my favorite sweet drinks, and stock up on canned corned beef, rice, dried shrimp, etc etc. without hassle or struggle. That's a good thing. I've grown a little picky about brands of fresh soy milk that I buy and have found that Viet Hoa seems to carry one or two brands and doesn't always restock right away - so that's one of the items that usually sends me elsewhere. read more

Ok, so you may not receive an overly warm welcome from the cashier - who gives a shit? The ladies are trying to ring your stuff up and there are no bar codes so they have to concentrate. A great asian grocery store. Lots of variety of foods. The prices could be a little cheaper though (but thats my comparison of this place with other grocery stores in San Francisco). The store sells all sorts of cooking utensils and even sells raw fish/meats. The cashiers are fast and nice and this place accepts visa/mastercard. The biggest plus is that this is so close to the Argyle red line stop. read more

I've been in tons and tons of Chinese (or otherwise Asian) supermarkets all my life. So it's not a shock that Viet Hoa has a good selection of fresh seafood, ramen, frozen products, soft drinks, soy sauces... But my constant fascination with this place is: How the hell is it so CHEAP? The Chinese supermarkets left these prices behind a longggg time ago. Heck, some of the familiar products from my childhood that are no longer being sold in the Chinese markets can still be found here (namely the snacks). Viet Hoa also has a good selection of familiar Taiwanese products (congee condiments, apple sidra, pork sung, shacha sauce...) --and more importantly, brands-- that I have a hard time finding in other Asian markets. For that reason, this place sometimes feels a bit like a time vacuum-- but never in a bad way. The presentation of the fresh produce (spotty selection) and meats/seafoods is mediocre, and I generally would rather go to H-Mart for the same, if not lower, prices on these items. But for packaged stuff especially, this place is awesome: the same stuff and same brands we love, except the Vietnamese version and apparently therefore at a lower cost. Also wonderfully accessible by El. It's the only supermarket on Argyle I will keep returning to (though avoiding it on weekends is a must). read more

Viet Hoa is one of the best grocery stores I've been to. It doesn't need the "specialty" or "ethnic" tag, because one could quite reasonably provision an American family here (as long as they didn't object to the substitution of Doritos for "Chiz Crackers"). There's a wide variety of fresh seafood and meats. The pork loin, at $2.60/lb, looked fresh and well-selected (and I'd certainly bet on Viet Hoa, more than commercial chain grocers, not to use dyes or other smoke and mirrors). An 8 oz. bag of chile peppers for about $1.15. Three ounces of star anise for $1. Fairly a carafe of soy sauce for under $2. Several stalks of lemongrass for $0.65. $1.25 for a package of soba noodles that run $2.99 at the Acme in Newark, DE. About an acre of shelf space for discerning and choosy consumers of coconut milk. And the produce, which for me was the most revelatory thing about Viet Hoa. It's clean and marked, and accurate translations into English are provided, even for the less common stuff. If the average "American" grocery store remotely approached the quality bar set by Viet Hoa, we might eat a lot better as a nation. The worst chain offender in my mind is Whole Foods, where you'd probably pay $2.50 for each dollar spent at VH, for food (especially produce and meats) of noticeably lower quality. read more

I suppose this has become my Asian grocery store of choice since my parents would drive out from Michigan to buy stuff since I was little. They still like to come to this store now even as they come to visit me. It was the largest store for some time until the plaza that was built nearby off Broadway came around. I have become accustomed to coming here since I know where everything is and am pretty familiar with where to find certain products on which aisles. I would imagine the prices to be pretty competitive and they have more people that seem to work the registers to prevent lines from becoming too long. read more

Stopped in here while waiting for our table at Tweet I was met with all sorts of instant noodle soup. They have all my favorites here. And it's not noodles but they have the instant rice soup that is the best in the world for breakfast! I picked up 5 for the next week, and at .75 a piece why not? We found an awesome assortment of snacks and I saw a lot of Thai products which is great since my favorite Thai Grocery closed down. Oh how I"ll miss that place! Of all the stores on this section of Argyle, this is the largest. They have a huge selection overall, including spices, sauces, pretty much anything you would need to make nearly any Asian dish, vegetables and fresh fish. They have a meat counter, but the selection did seem somewhat limited. After attempting conversation with a couple of the employees who apparently didn't speak English, I found lots of help and friendliness with a few of the customers. read more

I'm definitely a fan of this grocery store. I was out of stock and in serious need of some rice vinegar, unagi, hoisin sauce, wrappers, soy sauce, lychee, tapioca balls, seaweed, etc. I'm relegated to Whole Paycheck, as it's the only place within walking distance. Given that Whole Paycheck didn't have some of the items I was looking for (and the items they do have are outrageously expensive,) I decided to take the red line down to Argyle on a weekday. I roamed around and found Viet Hoa. I was able to find almost everything I needed. The aisles are rather small and some may say that the area is dirty, but I'd take authenticity and reasonable prices over sleek, pretentious and overpriced any day. read more

I really liked the selection this place offers, they had four kinds of everything I was looking for. What I didn't like was the extreme attitude I had to deal with from everyone who worked there. The cart wrangler followed me around the store, presumably at someones direction, and bumped into me four times. Once, ok. Twice, weird. But four times? Come on now. When I got to the cashier she refused me make eye contact with me and didn't even acknowledge me when I thanked her. read more

This is a very interesting store. Half the things in it are a big mystery to me. Once you get over the shock of the smell that hits your nose when you come in, you can start exploring. This is definitely not a store where I will be shopping regularly, just because it doesn't have all the things I need to complete my grocery shopping, and I like to get everything in one place, if possible. But, still fun to check out once in a while. They sell products from Philippines, China, Vietnam and probably other places . You will find plenty of fresh fish, and seafood. Many items that i have never seen before. Fresh fruits and vegetables. First time ever that I saw such wonders like rambutan, and duran fruit. Big selection of dry goods. Big parking attached to the store, which is a very big plus in this neighborhood. Sometimes it's fun to explore, and venture out into a place that might be completely opposite of what we are used to. read more

This is the second largest Asian grocery store in the area but the first closest to my apartment. They have a really impressive selection of fresh vegetables, herbs, seafood, and crazy exotic stuff you've never heard of (or at least I've never heard of). If you're vegetarian or are otherwise nauseated by meat/seafood (like some friends of mine), you might not want to venture in here. Everything is right out in the open, and the smell is pretty intense. I'm willing to brave it for quality products. read more

I love this indoor market! They have a huge variety of items that we would find odd or unique (cuts of meat, dried objects, candy that doesn't seem like candy, fruits that look poisonous, etc). At the same time, that's what I love about it! I can find many teas that usually are expensive at other stores, but in bulk. I'd rather support small stores like this one anyway! Also, their candy selection is great because they have those crunchy, chocolate-filled Hello Pandas (like the Koalas we used to be able to find). You can also buy Poki (spell?) called Yan Yan sticks to dip in strawberry & chocolate-flavored creme. It can become a zoo inside so watch your steps, but the workers are always very pleasant. P/S: Especially keep any eye out for the fresh crabs that are placed in the bins while women push going for the best ones. read more

Viet Hua is one of my favorite grocery shopping places in Uptown. Consider it is a 4.5 star. They have a variety of foods to choose from at a fairly reasonable price. Sometimes the parking lot is too crowded and I have to go to paid parking somewhere a little far. I will check it out very often. read more

I've been going to this supermarket for as long as I can remember, but my mom has been going here for years, even before I was born. My father has a history with this particular neighborhood seeing how he's from Vietnam, and his job is nearby. This is why I'm familiar with this area, and this particular store. They have all the things my family needs: Jasmine Rice, ingredients for whatever my mom plans on cooking, and other Oriental favorites from Korea (Shumai), and Flipino favorites (Puto, and Siopao), as well as Rice Cookers (my family has had their current one for twenty-five years now, and still works like it's new!). This is one of my favorite Asian places to shop, and I would highly recommend coming here, especially if you're looking for certain Asian ingredients, or having a mad Asian craving. ;-) read more
