Got some things from this locally owned market. It has an okay location in West Rogers Park. Morse Fresh Market is on the same street. Has a lot of what to expect. The produce makes up a lot of the store's inventory, so be sure to get some of this. Before it was pretty common for grocery stores to be independent. It's getting to be like these are all chains, but not at this one. This market is committed to the local community, and helps introduce unfamiliar items to people. A long time business in the community. It opened in 2004 at this location. A few hard to find specialties like Caribbean, Latin, and West African ingredients can be found. They also have hot food service. Has quite a lot inside. It's located on Morse Avenue at Greenview and is popular with many people. They make a lot of the prepared foods made to order, so it's fresh, and there's a good selection of meats and vegetables. read more

A solid local neighborhood grocery store. No, it's not cheap, but it has a quality selection that caters to a variety of tastes and is always staffed with friendly people hustling to keep the store clean and well stocked. Sometimes they have good sales on particular items, such as produce that's overripe. I really love their selection of prepared foods, both entrees and bakery items. Their tiramisu "Greco traditional style" is some of the best tiramisu I've ever had!! Yes, their recently implemented "bag policy" is somewhat of a hassle, but I imagine they are such a small store that theft is actually an issue. Therefore they are trying to keep their profit margins in the black and I get that! They always have homeless people outside the store, many of whom I now know by name, who are just trying to get something to eat (and they do, from me and other neighbors), but it's still a liability for the store if someone steals from them. A few weeks back, I complained about the service in here outside of my two favorite cashiers. I have been in here two times since then, and I have to update my review. The service changed. Zero idea if the owner reads these reviews, but there has been a 180-degree turn. I'll probably always favor the two cashiers I described in prior posts just cause I naturally warmed up to them from casual conversation over the past couple of years, but my shoulders are no longer slumping when I don't see them. This is generally my go-to grocery store as it's close to my apartment, but the "security" they have up front is rude and overstepping. I stopped in today on the way home from my office to grab some yogurt and he immediately stopped me and told me to leave my bag (an open basket filled with 2 laptops and a coat) up front. I asked why, told him I have valuables in there and I'm not leaving it up front, he said I have to and it's store policy. Never heard that before, never seen any signs, never been stopped or told to leave my bag anywhere before. I told him if he was worried I was gonna steal some yogurt he can look in the basket as I leave, and he told me I am required leave it up front, so I ended up just leaving entirely since I'm not leaving 2 work laptops unsecured while I shop for no apparent reason. He was rude, and as this is supposedly their "store policy" I won't be shopping here anymore due to the inconvenience. read more

Usually like this place. Today i had to walk with the manager twice to show them price on shelf did not match price at register. WATCH YOUR RECEIPT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The manager said they put up sale prices on items on the shelves but don't enter that information into the system that they are on sale until the next day???????? I have been going to Morse Market for the past ten years. The staff is incredible, always helpful. The produce guys are constantly rotating and stocking. I almost never get bad produce there, and more often then not they are giving away bananas etc. I haven't seen the owner for some time, hope he's alright. The staff is always super helpful. I'm short, so I have to ask them often to get stuff off of higher shelves for me and they often do without complaint. I love also that they have something for everyone. Very extensive selection of Vegan/ Vegetarian and GF products, which is impressive for a small, family owned business. I hate the area, it's gotten so bad lately, but I hope the community rallies together and continues to shop here. read more

Don't shop here at all unless you want to be profiled for bag checks. Some weeks they do back checks another weeks they don't. When I called today to ask about said bag Checks and stated that the employee said that well if we don't have security in the morning, then they don't do bag checks. I said well you can't pick and choose when you do bag checks, especially when you're asking people to leave their valuables and or other purchases upfront. When I asked what system they have in place for said bag check i.e. something gets stolen or orders get crossed up they had nothing in place so don't shop here unless you want to be profiled about your bag check. read more

A few years ago I would've given this place four or five stars. The employees have always been very nice and that has not changed. What has changed is that I've come home with rotten chicken several times now. And you can tell the chicken has been re-wrapped and re-labeled with a newer date because it's doubled up and only the rotten ones are the ones that have a double wrap. Also, many of their pasta salads are expired, or they have been prepared and packed like 10 days prior. Make sure to check the dates on everything in the store! And even then, be cautious of the raw meats. They really have disappointed me and I rarely come back unless I'm in a pinch for time. Rotten chicken and old Macaroni salad are a huge turn off. Solid place to get your groceries, but my main comment is that they're just really good people. I was having a hard day - had forgotten my wallet and didn't have time to go back and get it before closing. The owner was able to find a solution for me and help me out in a way no corporate monstrosity could ever hope to, no matter the kindness of any individual cashier. Morse Market was my absolute favorite thing about living in Rogers Park. Their meat and produce were of the highest quality available and very affordable. For the size that it is, the selection is good. You may pay a markup on other convenience items like household cleaning products or cooking/baking mixes, but I personally would rather pay a little more for those items than have to drive or get on a train to go to a larger store. Grateful for this neighborhood grocery. Grateful for the service. I know they are subjected to a lot of neighborhood hassle from street people, and they remain kind and no-nonsense. My compliant is not so much with the store staff as much as with the bread for sale. The California Sourdough, which is now astronomically priced at @$5, goes moldy within two-three days. Great place to shop. That is until now. Arrived at 7:50pm on 9/2/23. Doors were locked and cashiers standing at check stands. I knocked on the door and tapped my watch. The cashier only made a sad face to me. Several minutes later a manager came out to lock the parking gate and I explained my disappointment. He apologized and had the nerve to tell me to come on time next time. Very rude and disappointingly. I've been shopping at Morse Fresh Market for over 13 years. The store, despite its modest size, is a full-service supermarket. The friendly, professional staff keeps the shelves well-stocked, the aisles clean, and the checkout lines moving at a brisk pace. You might pay a little more for certain items here, but the price is worth it if you live within walking distance of the store. This place is still great! Even though it's not a big market, it gets the job done! They have great produce and meat at great prices. All the staff are nice and efficient. I love the different chocolate selection they have here, in addition to all the different types of sodas/drinks you can buy here. It's nice that they hot food available as well! For the record; I visit this store at least once/twice a week. For the most part they have a great selection of produce/grocery items and the price is great! But today was not great at all. In fact, I was put in a situation that left me speechless. Not once....not twice... but 3 TIMES this man, said OWNER, name tag reading TED, put his finger in my face, snatched the basket out my possession AND used foul language toward me. I LITERALLY HAD MY HAND OUT IN FRONT STOPPING HIM FROM GETTING CLOSER TO MY FACE. All the meanwhile the other employees watched and one even apologized FOR HIM! After asking 3 EMPLOYESS for a contact number to discuss what happened I was told there was no one to contact. Now i happen to think the saying "The customer is always right" is bs! No way is the customer ALWAYS right...... but I'm from Chicago. I Am a Women. And in any other situation I woulda felt like I needed to protect myself. It's never OK to put your hands on someone.... I've lived in the neighborhood for years now as I'm from the area but in recent visits, especially since "security" showed up, all of a sudden I'm getting the feeling everytime I go in there I'm being watched more closely which is odd because I just go there generally to get the items I want, PAY FOR THEM, and promptly leave. Soon as I enter the store I get a mean look from the "security" guy who never speaks as soon as I greet him, he also always seems to be standing at the head of the store looking down whichever aisle I'm shopping in; also all of a sudden, the young manager guy spirits away to the back of the store. Every time. I'm not paranoid and they arent in the least subtle, they think they're being covert about it but sometimes you just have that intuition. I had to deal with their mis-pricing and over priced items because of neighborhood gentrification. They wanna look good for the newbies in the neighborhood but knowing this neighborhood still has a substantial amount of people living check to check. Some of the food is indeed rotted like other reviewers have mentioned. They have generally nice cashiers who have a welcoming demeanor but whoever keeps hiring the young assistant managers needs to reconsider as the one guy there loves to close early and the one they used to have was more concerned with flirting with the cashiers than getting any actual work done or assisting the customers. They also never seem to get rid of the element that hangs out in front of the store smoking weed and harassing people for money. read more

It's a nice enough medium sized grocery store in a great location. They gave the best deli meat sales in the area, not the lowest prices, but definitely the best values. They gave decent spices, breads and really good fruits and veggies, both selection and value wise. They are consistently courteous in a way you would expect a medium sized store to be, save their 'no bags' in the store policy. For instance, they don't allow people to carry a backpack in the store. Which is why they don't get five stars. If you can't trust me with a backpack in your store, then I can't trust you with my backpack. While that sounds a reasonable protection against theft, as a black man, I find that policy to be more offensive than it is rational. So if I have to stop at the store on the way home with a backpack, I have to go to Jewel instead. That said, they are accommodating in many other ways that Jewel could never be. So I like the store and recommend it on condition. read more

You can't depend on this store to be open when they say they will be. They closed 10 minutes earlier all the time, and have closed early twice after I called in to ask if they were open and what time they close. They also used covid. As an excuse to close early and never opened back up with normal hours. Their cereal prices are outrageous too. Average cereal cost is like $5. Nobody buys that I bet and their food gets stale. read more

Overall I love this place because they have great produce, reasonable prices and is family owned.Those are my biggies in going to a grocery store. Most of the time I go in there and it's very efficiently run with a manager/owner in the front and friendly staff who are more than happy to direct you to whatever you can't find. They even have a bathroom in the back for customers! The one very important thing that knocks my review of this place down to 3 stars is because of improperly labeled product in the meat department. I cook quite often so know the difference in my cuts of meat especially on a chicken. It has now been twice in about a year that I've seen their packages of boneless chicken thigh include boneless drumsticks in there. You can tell because drumsticks have tendons and thighs do not. Drumsticks are also a cheaper cut of meat than thighs so you are not getting a fair seal. The first time this happened to me, I realized the issue when I got home to start cooking. I brought the product back and told the manager who asked the meat department to get me the correct meat. I was appreciative of this and he was very polite. Today I see the same problem in their packages and told the staff stocking the meat fridge. He assured me it was only thigh but I know better. The manager who helped me last time wasn't there so I left without purchasing it. Because of this, I feel I have to be more vigilant about checking all their meat products before purchasing it due to these incidences. I would like to think these are isolated incidences but I can't help but to feel wary of the meat department now and double check before buying. read more

A real gem. I have just moved to Rogers Park and was thrilled to find this great store a few blocks from home. I had been getting in my car and hauling the groceries in but this is so handy to walk to and back. They seem to have everything I need and have been very friendly to me and my son. They gave him some free bananas at the checkout one day. He is 17 and was thrilled. Sure, it has a limited selection BUT it is very clean and they take advantage of every square inch to display products. I feel like the choices are fewer but good. So... you just moved to Rogers Park and need to find a good place to shop for groceries, fast! Making the journey to Whole Foods or Domino's is a bit of a trek and the Howard EL stop always smells like pee, it's getting a bit tedious. Don't worry, there is an alternative. Check out the Morse Fruit and Meat Market at 1430 W. Morse Avenue. Don't let the locals scare you, Morse Avenue might look sketchy but it's not bad at all. Just ignore the wanna-be bangers and give the homeless guy 50 cents, he's usually quite sweet. I have watched this store evolve over the last few years and their selection just keeps getting better and more diverse all the time. They have a large and varied produce section with everything from lettuce and potatoes to prickly-pear cactus and papaya. Some of the stuff I have no idea what it is or how to cook it, but it's a good excuse to ask someone else who is buying it and broaden my horizons a bit. There is a large selection of ethnic foods, Mexican, Greek, Thai, Japanese, Middle-Eastern, etc. There are also a lot of spices, and it's the only place in the area where I have been able to find powdered wasabi. Try putting it in a tuna-fish sandwich. Muy caliente!!! Since R. P. is rapidly becoming gentrified they have been getting a lot of requests for organic and vegetarian options, and their selection in these areas is much better than I expected and keeps growing. They have a small butcher shop in the back and a good selection of cheeses and deli-meats. My favorite part is on the weekends, when they sell fresh, slow cooked "carnitas" that are absolutely perfect for pulled pork burritos. I think I have gained five pounds just off of that! *burp* If you need a special cut of meat they will always be happy to accommodate you. Oh, and you HAVE to check out the photos for this place, I found a few "specialty" items in the meat section that I just had to take pictures of to send to my mother. You will know what I mean when you see them. Ha! Ha! They also have an affordable selection of other items such as kitchen utensils, cookware, scented votive candles with Catholic icons on them, random fun stuff. There isn't a lot of square footage to work with so the aisles are narrow, but be patient and say "pardon me" when you bump into someone. It's o.k. to rub elbows with your neighbors. :) The way they organize their items isn't very logical, at least not to me. You will find beans in two different sections, and the powdered Hidden Valley Ranch dip is in the front corner by the fruit and rosemary, not next to the bottled salad dressings. Weird. But hey, nothing is perfect. All you have to do is ask. Speaking of "ask", the go-to guy there is Pablo. He is one of the managers and knows everything about everything and is just pleased as punch to help you find what you are looking for. He also takes suggestions as to new products or brands and will generally have your requested item on the shelves within a week or so. English isn't his first language although he speaks it quite well and understands pretty much everything you say as long as you are patient. He's a great guy. I'll let more conscientious consumers such as Matthew S. do the point-by-point comparison shopping. What I can tell you is that this place is cheap. But you knew that already, unless my review happens to be at the top of the page. Everybody loves this place! Aren't smaller stores supposed to have higher prices? I didn't show up to Macroeconomics class enough back in school. For example, last Sunday, I got most of the ingredients for a batch of chili (green peppers, red and yellow onions, mushrooms, and beans) for $11.77. And that also includes a roll, a cookie, two bananas, and some grapes. Grapes for $2.00/lb in the dead of winter! I haven't bought grapes in winter for years, because they're expensive as hell and all beaten up. Not these--two bucks a pound and in great shape. Big-ass (i.e. 29-ounce) cans of pinto beans on sale for $1.29. Those large pig-shaped, molasses-y cookies are 3 for a dollar. I could go on and on. So, at a mile walk from my house, I don't come often, but I really should. It's a shame that I didn't shop here when I lived on Lunt years ago. But nowadays, when the weather is decent and I have time for a weekend stroll, I head down to Morse for a few groceries. read more

This is one of the few walkable neighborhood groceries near me. Let's start off with what I like. I like that they have top choices in the deli department ie. Boars head meat and cheeses. I also like that they carry organic produce, and other items. I enjoy that they carry a little ethnic section. It's close and compact but perfect for a store of the neighborhood variety. What I don't like is the piss poor customer service from the ladies behind those said deli counters and at the register. If you cannot muster a friendly face, smile, or disposition it just says terrible things about the owners, and management. How can they allow their staff to treat customers. So irritating.
